Full textTo test the multifactorial model of health psychology, we have studied the impact of certain biological, psychological and social factors on breast cancer evolution and quality of life. 75 breast cancer patients aged from 30 to 70 years and treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy have been followed for two years, since breast cancer diagnosis. The data relative to sociobiographical and personality characteristics (predictors) were collected before the announcement of the diagnosis. The adjustment strategies (mediators) were evaluated three weeks after the diagnosis. Quality of life and evolution of the disease were estimated two years after the announcement of the diagnosis. Results shows that breast cancer patients have recourse to four qualitatively different coping strategies : perceived control, problem-focused strategy, hopelessness and perceived social support. High trait anxiety, unfavorable body perception, presence of progesterone receptors are associated with the perceived control strategy. High trait anxiety, favorable body perception, patient's poor health and inflammatory tumor are linked to hopelessness. High number of life events and presence of estrogen receptors predicted the use of problem-focused strategy. Separation or husband's loss and a high histologic grade were associated with perceived social support. Furthermore, results shows that a large number of children, high trait anxiety, patient's poor health, inflammatory tumor, absence of menopause and hopelessness reaction to the diagnosis, perceived control and problem-focused strategies predicted a poor quality of life. Absence of previous psychiatric problems, widowhood, inflammatory tumor and hopelessness are associated with an unfavorable evolution of the disease. The results also indicate that there is a mediator effect of coping strategies between some predictors and quality of life

Full textThis research aims at examining if there are links between conceptualizations detained in forgiveness, different motives called to clarify the choice of forgiveness, unforgiveness and revenge and overall propensity to forgive shown in everyday life by the general public. The existing relations between conceptualizations of forgiveness, motives and personality are also examined. The main findings indicate that conceptualizations of forgiveness “liberating process”, “intimate process” or “change of heart” are linked to the tendency to forgive in daily life. The conceptualization of forgiveness “immoral behavior” is linked to the tendency to block forgiveness and to perpetrate vengeful acts. Agreeableness has a positive relation with the conceptualizations of forgiveness “liberating process” and a negative relation with the conceptualizations of forgiveness “immoral behavior”. As for motives, forgiveness motives “conformist” are linked to the willingness to forgive in everyday life. Different motives put forward to explain the choice of unforgiveness or revenge are linked to the willingness not to forgive or to avenge in daily life. Agreeableness is linked to the mention of forgiveness motives “alloic-sympathy” (desire to forgive by empathy). Neuroticism is linked to the mention of unforgiveness motives “autic-mastery” (desire not to forgive by self-protection) and of unforgiveness motives “alloic-mastery” (desire not to forgive to provoke a change of attitude from the offender). Age, gender, study level do not have a major role neither in the way to conceptualize forgiveness nor in the mention of such or such motives

Full textThe research presented originates in a double set of problems : on the one hand revelation of cannabis addiction and on the other hand the link between cannabis addiction and borderline personality adaptation ("character neurosis" and "character psychosis"). With this aim in mind, we hypothesized that self esteem, behavioral involvement, activity system and representation of the rules and expectations of society define the type of personality adjustment of cannabis addict ("character neurosis" et "character psychosis"). The first phase of our research consisted of characterization of the sample. Our population consisted of 70 cannabis addict selected according to precise inclusion criteria (the cannabis dependency questionnaire, the Addiction severity index and criteria of bordreline personnahty according to the DSM IV). The second phase investigated our general hypothesis based on self-esteem, behavioral involvement, activity system and representation of the rules and expectations of society. In order to test our hypothesis and its correlations, we used the following evaluation tools : the Self esteem inventory, Hand test, the Telic dominance scale and the semi-structured interview mode. Self esteem, activity system and representation of the rules and expectations of society are in fact discriminant components of the cannabis addicts in our sample. Behavioral involvement was weakly significant in differentiating cannabis addicts according to personality adjustment. In conclusion, the personality adjustment of the cannabis addict, has an influence on cannabis consumption. Cannabis addiction is controlled if personality adjustment is of "character neurosis" type, but on the other hand addiction will be reinforced if the adjustment is of "character psychosis" type

Full textThe purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the emerging research on brand personality from a conceptual, methodological and managerial perspective. . Accordingly, this study draws from theories of Human personality and Self-Concept to uncover the intricacies of relationships between brands and consumers. These frameworks help support the conceptual development of the metaphor of brand personality. To this end, a unique approach is proposed to develop an empirical measure of personality which can be applied for brands. A qualitative study followed by five empirical data collection phases allowed us to define, stabilise and validate the structure of what we term the “brand personality barometer”. Consequently, the conceptual model was used to confirm the predictive power of brand personality on behavioural outcomes (i. E. Brand commitment and purchase intention) for the specific domain of perfumes. Moderating variables such as age, sensitivity and loyalty to the brand were also integrated into the global model. Results of this sixth phase of this empirical study, carried out with 838 consumers, support the influence of brand personality on consumer behaviour and suggest the presence of a congruence effect between both brand and consumer personality traits. Additional analyses reveal a new factorial measure of this congruence and confirm its predictive ability for brand commitment and purchase intention. Managerial implications are discussed, especially in terms of positioning and communication strategies, As such, the “brand personality barometer” can be used for differentiation strategies and becomes a useful operational tool to manage brands

Full textThe Five Factor Model of personality which has a very good cross-cultural and trans-situational factorial stability, made it possible to undertake scientific studies on the relationships between personality and performance or counter-productive behaviors at work. The principal aims of this study consist in examining 1) the effects of the social desirability on the factor structure and the scores of the NEO PI R in the situation of recruitment, 2) the predictability of the NEO-PI-R for performance and counter-productive behaviors at work, and 3) the interpretation of the personality disorders by means of the NEO-PI-R and its applicability in the prediction of the counter-performance. We undertook our research with 21,349 job applicants in a French public transportation company. Our results show that the factor structure of the NEO-PI-R was not affected by the social desirability, nevertheless its scores were affected in the situation of recruitment. The applicants presented themselves more "Conscientious" and less "Neurotic" than the individuals of normative sample. The scores of the personality disorders which are calculated by means of the NEO-PI-R have correct sensitivities in spite of the dissymmetry of the distributions. As for the relationship between personality and performance, the dimension "Conscientiousness" predicts positively success in training and negatively counter-productive behaviors, the dimension "Neuroticism" predicts positively bus drivers’ accidents. The examination of the predictability of performance with the facets and the personality disorders offers additional information

This doctoral dissertation aims at better understanding exercise dependence by proposing an integrative approach of exercise dependence. Thus we articulated the socio-cognitive variables, the dimensions of the personality and exercise behaviour. A research programme in two steps and in which more than 1018 people were involved was conducted. In a first time the various measuring instruments were validated: the exercise dependence scale translated into French has satisfactory psychometric qualities. In a second time, we wanted to know what the share of the dimensions of the personality and the socio-cognitive variables in the explanation of exercise dependence was

Full textThe national personality notion in the meaning of a collective personality structure characteristic of the global national societies is atthe center of a large scientific production in the french and anglo-saxon social sciences, so much from cultural anthropology and social psychology than from political psychology and sociology or psychology of people and international relations history. The genealogical analysis of the modern researches on this subjet underline in the anglo-american way the existence of an interdisciplinary well developped scientific school caused by the personality culturalist theory, and conversely in the french way the coesixtence of less developped and rather strongly compartementalized several studies mouvements caused by the psychological theory. The critical typology of the national personality modern theories underline the theretical and methodological divergences which separate the anglo-saxon culturalist models (national character central model and political culture derived model) from the french psychological various approaches : the psycho-geographical approach (national temperament), the caracterological and ethnopsychological approaches (national ethnotype), the psycho-historical approach (national mentality) and the image (national images)

Full textThe purpose of this study is the influence of personal and situational characteristics on coping and coping stability within the framework of the transactional model (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984). The study is in three parts. The first part is on the influence of personal and situational characteristics on coping. The purpose of the second part is to underline coping stability across time and situations. The third part is a qualitative analysis on coping process, coping strategies identification, and the observation of coping stability. The subjects are 42 high level athletes, 18 men and 24 women, 19 to 31 years old (m=21,8 ± 2,2), playing team sports. The main psychological questionnaires are : the Ways of Coping Checklist (Lazarus et Folkman, 1984) reduced by Vitaliano et al. (1985), translated and validated in French by Paulhan (1994), and the NEO PI-R (Costa & McCrae, 1985) translated and validated in French by Rolland & Petot (1998)

Full textObjectives :Orthognathic surgery induces a change in the morphology of the face. The functional and aesthetic effects are well known, but the psychological effects are more difficult to explore. This research proposes to investigate 1) the impact of orthognathic surgery on several psychological and social variables and 2) the impact of personality traits of dissatisfied patients on postoperative dissatisfaction. Method : this longitudinal research includes 288 patients undergoing orthognathic surgery. A self-administrated questionnaire was distributed one month before orthognathic surgery (T1), three to six months after (T2) and one year after (T3). Five studies were conducted. Three of them assess the impact of orthognathic surgery on mentalhealth (GHQ-28), self-esteem (SEI), body image (MBSRQ and SATAQ), quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF) and personality (BFI). The fourth focuses on the validation of tools for evaluating postoperative satisfaction. The fifth describes the characteristics of dissastisfied patients and attempts to identify predictors of dissatisfaction. Results : Study 1. There is an improvement of severe depression at T2 but there is no improvement of mental health and self-esteem at T3. Body image is improved but appearence orientation does not change and overweight preoccupations significantly increase; Study 2. Quality of life is partially improved (social relationships and physical health) but it remains lower than the general population's. Study 3. Extraversion, agreableness and neuroticism are modified at T2 and close to their original state at T3. The surgery improves openness but not consciousness. Study 4. Five scales have been validated to explore postoperative satisfaction : 1) scale of postoperative satisfaction, scales of 2) familial and social support, 3) improvements seen in my life, 4) satisfaction with the information and 5) quality of relationship with the surgeon

Full textThe impact of personality on performance and sport success is a very largely allowed belièf and seems to be common sense. However, a systematic analysis of the scientific literature reveals that the work completed on this topic does not lead to this direction. This doctoral dissertation proposes on the one hand, to develop an innovative conceptualisation of sport success and on the other hand, to study the contribution of personality dimensions to this success. From this point of view we made the choice to direct this research towards the theoretical fields of subjective well-being and job performance, from which we borrowed theories, concepts and methods. The application of the concepts of life satisfaction, emotions or objective and subjective career success to the sport field, allowed the creation of an alternative conception of sport success distinguishing a subjective success (sportsmen's judgement) and an objective success (trainers' judgement). The research of the temperamental bases of sport success was supported on several theoretical frameworks such as the Five Factor Theory (McCrae and Costa, 1995) and the hierarchical models of subjective well-being (Bottom-up and TopDown). The obtained results highlight the relation between objective success and Neuroticism, Extraversion and Agreeableness dimensions. Nevertheless, Agreeableness dimension seems to have the main impact, primarily through its influence on the Relational Qualities dimension (Fair-play, Integrity. . . ). The subjective success, as for it, is strongly related to Neuroticism and Extraversion dimensions as well as those of life satisfaction and emotions. The consideration of motivational elements, of the theory of goals and of the alignment of predictors and performance criteria according to Campbell's strategy (1990) should allow, in later research, to improve the comprehension of the yole of personality in sport success

Full textRheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common chronic disease with no known cause or cure that typically follows an unpredictable course. RA is characterized by pain and progressive disability. We present a brief summary of the medical aspects of RA. The present work provides a comprehensive review of the literature related to the role of psychological variables in the onset and the evolution of RA. The potential role of stress is also critically discussed. Because the course of disease is unpredictable, with disease exacerbations and remissions, many RA persons exhibit the signs of learned helplessness after repeated flare-ups of their condition. Perceived ability to control some aspects of RA (self-efficacy) is correlated with a best adjustment. On the other hand, we examine the important role that coping plays in RA. We conclude that it is useful to consider the general model of health and illness that forms the basis for much health psychology research. Our aim is to determine the relationships of several psychological variables (perceived control, social support, coping) on adjustment to RA. The sample comprised 60 people with RA, who had a mean age of 57 years (range 22 to 78 years) and a mean disease duration of less 3 years. Data were collected by questionnaires (french versions): the arthritis self-efficacy scale (Lorig, 1989), the arthritis helplessness index (Nicassio & al. , 1985), the London coping with RA questionnaire (Newman, 1990). RA adjustment was assessed by objective measures of RA activity (total number of painful and inflamed joints, rheumatoid factor,. . . . ), and by the short form of the arthritis impact measurement scale 2 (french version of the aims2-sf: Guillemin & al. , 1997). Factor analyses of the french coping questionnaire clearly identified three factors: helplessness, problem focused coping, and avoidance. Avoidance predicts better emotional adjustment (15 months ago). Some lines of future researches will be also exposed

With the aim of studying the efficiency of the schemas therapy, in particular, early maladaptive schemas, we showed that a resistant anxio-depressive patients, the anxious and depressive components are related to the activation of some of the early maladaptive schemas described by Young (1995). The use of its schemas-focused therapy decreases strongly and significantly the levels of anxiety and depression. So, the evolution of the anxio-depressive disorder seems related to the anxious components (4 schemas), and the others in the depressive component (7 schemas), and the others else in both at the same moment (3 schemas) ; and schemas are related neither to the one, nor to the order one (5 schemas)

Full textThis thesis intends to evaluate the influence exerted by the five personality dimensions of the five factors model (McCrae et Costa, 1985; 1987) on the attitudinal and behavioral consequences of a behavioral commitment, in the context of student nutrition. A first study has been conducted with 167 students with a view to evaluate the efficacy of a commitment procedure, and notably by the public pattern of this technique, as a function of these five dimensions. This study highlight a weak and limited impact of the five dimensions of personality on the studied changes: notably, it appears that extraversion influences the efficacy of private commitment to induce attitudinal changes in the long term. The second and third studies have been conducted with a population of 186 and 268 students, with a view to put to the test the influence exerted by extraversion in relation to the effects of public commitment procedure. If the second study fails to highlight such an influence, it emerges from the third study that the modulation exerted by extraversion is only found on a behavioral dimension annex to the eating changes. These three studies reveal besides that behavioral commitment fails to induce eating and attitudinal changes upper to those aroused by a non-commitment procedure. These results are discussed from the angle of the difficulty of the eating change and of the possible moderation, due to this difficulty, of the effects exerted by personality on the commitment efficiency

Full textThe present dissertation aims at stimulating interdisciplinary research on the psychology of virtue, involving philosophical virtue theory – which has been studying moral excellence in human character for more than two millennia – personality psychology, social psychology and the psychology of expert performance. My first contribution is to the philosophy of psychology: uncritical reliance on the vague common sense concepts of “ trait” and “type” has been an obstacle for real progress in understanding human character. I am going to compare and clarify the use of these concepts in psychology, philosophy and common sense. Theories of personality are slowly finding their way out of a long crisis: inspired by the work of W.Mischel, I will show that the joint efforts of cognitive science and evolutionary psychology are needed to model personality processes correctly. As a second contribution, I am going to evaluate a neo-Aristotelian model of the psychology of virtue, based on the idea that we should strive for moral excellence in every relevant domain of life (unity of virtue). This model is based on ancient “generalist” theories of expert performance. Now, personality psychology and situationist social psychology show that the natural condition of human character is fragmentation and inconsistency. Contemporary psychology of expert performance proves that excellence in more that one or two domains is very rare. It follows that we should abandon the neo-Aristotelian model in favor of an account of specialized moral excellence in a limited number of virtues

Full textThis research is in keeping with our job as teachers of adults at the department of agriculture. This has led us to work with office employees (C and D category). These employees, mostly women, suffer from a lack of recognition from the managerial staff which mainly valorises engineering projects ; they live within an institution which is not favourable to their personal opening out. By checking the following main assumption : there is a link between the employees personality structures and their professional careers, we have developed a five points-typology : from the go-getter to the person who retreats into himself, this study identifies the elements which make up either a strong or an injured personal identity, and their links with the job. The study shows the importance of parental affection on the building of a personality. It points out parents influence on their child's professional career through their own vocational wish and their interest for the child’s success at school. The last part of this thesis suggests a new and indidualized training which is specific for these employees and contributes to the restructuring of personal identity, through the carrying out of a personal and vocational project which will enable them to play an active part within their institution

The first part consists of a proposal of theories on three concepts : personality, values and information ; chapter 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The second part, which contains eight chapters, is to present six studies that we have done in order to study the desirability and social utility of the descriptors and information about these descriptors. In this sense we use descriptors out of the free descriptions and descriptors of the Big Five. Chapter 4 discusses dimensional typologies outlined by the self and hetero-spontaneous descriptions and provides the basis of chapters 5, 6 and 7, where we analyzed separately, but also comparatively the social value of personological descriptors evoked spontaneously and information on these descriptors. Chapters 8, 9 and 10 contains further analysis using the same social value of personological descriptors, but this time we have used the descriptors of the Big Five. Finally, chapter 11 placed in correspondence the chapters 5-7 with the chapter 8-10. The results obtained confirm that the personality descriptors (natural descriptors or the descriptors output of a theoretical model) are not neutral, but carry a social valence, positive or negative valence indicating desirability and / or social utility. Personality descriptors would be a surface structure, masking an attribution process of social value

Full textDifficulty in determining the clinical borderlines of incest notion, existence of pathologies bordering on incest, close connections between social prohibition and individual interdict, have induce to the hypothesis that a structuring disorder of personality could be responsible for varied pathologies, of which incest would be only one manifestation. This disorder would be capable of endangering society. It could be the result of a lasting rush toward the mother of sexual infantile impulse beyond oedipus complex period. We called this rush "incestuosity". Failing a suffisant control of this incestuosity, the individual remains in a more or less symbiotic state. The separatness necessary for development and coming out into society cannot occur, from which result failing of differentiation achievement and castration where "everything is not allowed", unrecognition of the social law that induce to triangulation and separatness. This disorder affects the whole family and often survives from generation to generation. It denies completely or in part the law of life : the impossible coming back. From this etiologic conceiving of the disorders that result from insufficiently controlled incestuosity, a taking charge with not only therapeutic but also preventive aim is suggested, into the circle where live the individuals (prison, institutionnal, free). This treatment can be aimed at every family member. None is stigmatized as an agressor, a victim, an accessory. It allows a restructuration of the subject bound by the law of life in which every human being is separated (accession to the differentiation) belong to a society (entrance in a triangulation state) and "everything is not possible" (castration)

Full textThe aims of this research was to explain the relationship between some individual variables (general and specific traits of personality cognitif styles), consumer involvement and its consequences (search for information, decision making process, perceived brand differenciation). This research confirms previous findings establishing a link between involvement and its consequences. Relationships between individual variables, involvement and its consequences were partially verified, probably because of the existence of the interactif effect between these variables and in particular specific personality traits (self confidence and confidence in one's information ability and cognitif styles (cognitive differenciation tolerance for ambiguity)
