Abstract:
Thesis (M.Eng.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 1999.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 101-103).
A Digital Persona (DP) is a gateway to a set of personal information, such as phone numbers and email addresses. Applications and devices which use personal information, such as electronic calendars and cellular phones, can manage this information by using a DP. Information which is accessible through a DP can be stored in the DP itself or in other applications. Since a DP facilitates the transfer of information between devices and applications, a DP can help solve many information management problems, such as handling data with different internal representations. The DP's structured, yet flexible, object model allows di-verse devices and applications to access and update information without being forced to adopt a common object model. This thesis discusses the design of the DP object model and API, as well as the DP's implementation. Implementation details which are covered include object-oriented techniques, reflection, and interfaces.

Abstract:
This body of work is comprised of autobiographical narratives from my everyday experiences. The conflict in the stories comes both from without and within: awkward, frustrating situations force perplexed responses from the protagonist (me) even as I struggle to maintain internal balance between combative contradictory thoughts and impulses. I adopt many conventions from comic books. They allow me to freely incorporate text and image into the same pictorial space. Additionally, the comic book form possesses associations with \"low art\" that are valuable to my work. Comics are entertaining and non-threatening - they are perceived as childish and frivolous, and are accessible to a mass audience. I use the formal devices of comic books to raise the viewer/reader\'s expectations for a lighthearted, juvenile form of entertainment. However, once the viewer/reader examines the work more closely, I give them something else: a new way of looking at regular life that reveals the profound in the ordinary; a chance to identify with my awkward, deeply personal experiences; a quiet note of encouragement that none of us is truly alone.

Abstract:
This thesis is intended to analyse a mental phenomenon widely neglected in current philosophical discussions: personal memories. Although the analysis is philosophical, the methodological approach is interdisciplinary in order to integrate empirical research done in cognitive science. The first part presents a general framework to better understand what personal memories are, how we access our personal past and what we access about our personal past. Chapter 1 introduces traditional theories of memory: direct realism and representationalism in their differen versions, as well as some objections. I defend here a particular form of representationalism that is based on the distinction between content, intentional object and ontological object. Chapter 2 explores the possible contents of our personal memories, which prove to be heterogenous, even embodied and external, whereas chapter 3 analyses their possible intentional objects, with a special focus on past events. The second part of the thesis explores an aspect of our personal memories that was omitted in the first part: the senses in which our personal past is apprehended as personal. Chapter 4 examines the way in which the "self" intervenes in the construction of our personal memories anc determines their content. Chapters 5 and 6 focus on the analysis of what seems to be the most subjective aspect of our memories, that is, the emotions and feelings of our past experiences. In these last two chapters, I analyse the different interactions that can take place between memories and emotions and defend the idea that there can be memories with an emotional aspect that is not reducible neither to a propositional memory nor an occurrent and present emotion

Naslund, Melissa Nicole. "Counselor Education: A Personal Growth and Personal Development Experience." Diss., North Dakota State University, 2015. https://hdl.handle.net/10365/27862.

Abstract:
A basic qualitative design was implemented to better understand the personal growth and personal development of seven master?s level counseling graduates in the mid-western United States. Three foundational questions were used to guide the study: (1) How do master?s level counseling students experience personal growth and personal development during the master?s level counselor-training program? (2) What parts of the master?s level counselor-training program contributed most to students? personal growth and personal development? (3) How do master?s level counseling graduates conceptualize how their personal growth and personal development have impacted their professional identity and their present work with clients? To address these questions, seven interviews were conducted with professional counselors who had graduated from a CACREP-accredited master?s level counseling program between the years of 2005 and 2013. Sixteen themes emerged from the interviews that addressed four main areas: 1) how master?s level counseling students experience personal growth and personal development, 2) what parts of the training program most impacts personal growth and personal develop, 3) how personal growth and development experiences impact professional?s identity development and present work with clients, and 4) how the terms personal growth, personal development, and professional development are both unique and overlapping concepts. The sixteen themes were supported by direct quotations from the participants. A synthesis of the findings and current literature was conducted and further discussion regarding the limitations of the study, suggestions for future research and implications for counselor education and supervision programs were addressed.

Abstract:
In a context where we produce more and more personal data and where we control less and less how and by whom they are used, a new way of managing them is on the rise: the "personal cloud". In partnership with the french start-up Cozy Cloud (https://cozy.io) that is developing such technology, we propose through this work a way of collaboratively querying the personal clouds while preserving the privacy of the users. We detail in this thesis three contributions to achieve this objective: (1) a set of four requirements any protocol has to respect in this particular context: imposed randomness to prevent an attacker from influencing the execution of a query, knowledge dispersion to prevent any node from concentrating information, task atomicity to split the execution in as many independent tasks as necessary and hidden communications to protect the identity of the participants as well as the content of their communications; (2) SEP2P a protocol leveraging a distributed hash table and CSAR, another protocol that generates a verifiable random number, in order to generate a random and verifiable list of actors in accordance with the first requirement; and (3) DISPERS a protocol that applies the last three requirements and splits the execution of a query so as to minimize the impact of a leakage (in case an attacker was selected as actor) by providing to each actor the minimum amount of information it needs in order to execute its task

Hughes, Zoe Alis. "Personal trainers' experiences of clients revealing personal issues during sessions." Thesis, University of Surrey, 2017. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/844947/.

Full text
Abstract:
Previous research suggests that individuals have revealed moderate to serious personal issues to bar tenders, hairdressers, divorce lawyers and industrial supervisors and that training for these groups may provide a ‘cost-effective’ method of allowing people to access ‘primary care’. Such training already exists for the police, the military and in education settings and has been shown to be effective at imparting knowledge, building skills, and moulding the attitudes of these groups. Current training offered to personal trainers (PTs) relates specifically to clients referred with diagnosed mental health problems, rather than those sharing personal issues for the first time. This study investigates PTs’ experiences of clients sharing personal issues during a PT session. Eleven PTs aged 21 to 34 years (M = 26.3) participated in 26-58 minute semi-structured interviews. Interviews appeared to have reached saturation, and were analysed using Inductive Thematic Analysis. Four main themes were identified, with PTs expressing that “I didn’t think that supporting clients with personal or emotional problems was part of being a PT”. Because PTs felt that “it’s difficult to balance boundaries with building a good rapport”, this meant that they found themselves in situations where “I’m having to deal with clients opening up about a whole range of things on a regular basis” and were consequently left “managing the fallout”. PTs regularly experience clients sharing of personal issues during PT sessions and many wish to receive further education, training and guidance regarding this issue.

Hunt, Celia. "Personal fictions : the use of fictional autobiography in personal development." Thesis, University of Sussex, 1999. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.285106.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis contains the results of my research between 1994 and 1998 into the uses of fictional autobiography in personal development. The topic arose out of my observation, both of my own experience and the experience of students attending my creative writing courses, that writing fictional autobiography as part of a writing apprenticeship not only enabled the development of writing skills and the finding of a writing 'voice', but often had a therapeutic effect on the writer's relationship with himor herself, and with his or her significant others. I set out to explore this observation through an examination of my creative writing course 'Autobiography and Fiction' (subsequently called 'Autobiography and the Imagination'), which I taught at the University of Sussex Centre for Continuing Education from 1991 to 1996. I issued questionnaires to all 78 students who had taken this course, to generate data on the benefits of engaging in the writing of fictional autobiography. I also conducted interviews on the same topic with 5 of these students. I analysed the resulting data using the theory of the Germani American psychoanalyst Karen Horney, and to a lesser extent that of object relations theorists D.W. Winnicott, Christopher Bollas and Marion Milner. Where appropriate, I also used theory of literary and social narrative. The thesis presents the three main findings of the research, namely, that the writing of fictional autobiography (1) can facilitate a closer contact with the inner life, resulting in a stronger sense of identity and the finding of a 'writing voice'; (2) can help to reveal and work through problems of identity which cause writer's block; and (3) can provide a means of're-writing' self-narratives which have been 'written' in the psyche by family and society. The thesis concludes with some suggestions as to how fictional autobiography might be used in a self-analytic or psychoanalytic context.

Abstract:
The Personal TV Channel concept, still in an early stage of research, will record all TV programmes of interest in separate virtual channels (news channel, TV-series channels, movie channels) based on your preferences. The concept has been well received and this report investigates the technical issues and possibilities of creating Personal TV Channels. The development was done mostly as stand alone applications but also by extending to the open-source Linux PVR software MythTV. The experimental results using video ngerprint techniques shows a high accuracy for nding the starting points for TV-series and news broadcasts. The developed visualisation tool provides a clear output of the broadcast segmentation. The segmentation and matching of commercials outputs extensive commercial statistics and makes it possible to track the broadcast of specic commercials. Finally conclusions and future work are presented. Keywords : Video Scene Boundary Detection, Commercial Detection, Video Fingerprinting, Video Indexing, Content Analysis, Pattern Recognition

Digiuni, Malena. "Therapists' personal therapy." Thesis, Canterbury Christ Church University, 2011. http://create.canterbury.ac.uk/10198/.

Full text
Abstract:
Section A presents a literature review on the topic of personal therapy for therapists. Section B presents a cross-national empirical study. Drawing on the theory of planned behaviour, the study explored the influence of subjective norms (social stigma) on clinical psychology students’ attitudes towards seeking personal therapy. A total of 462 students from Argentina (n = 121), England (n = 211), and the US (n = 211) completed a survey on demographic characteristics, well-known predictors of seeking therapy, perceived social stigma for receiving therapy, and attitudes towards seeking therapy. Results revealed significant cross-national differences, with Argentinean students showing the lowest levels of perceived social stigma for receiving therapy (M = 5.02, SD = 1.60), followed by English (M = 4.57, SD = 1.61) and Americans (M = 3.22, SD = 2.35). English students showed significantly less positive attitudes towards seeking therapy (M = 22.60, SD = 2.97) than their Argentinean (M = 24.89, SD = 2.94) and American (M = 24.27, SD = 3.17) counterparts. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses revealed that perceived social stigma predicts students’ attitudes towards seeking therapy, even after controlling for the effects of other predictors of therapists’ therapy-seeking behaviours, among English (ß = -.26, p < .001), and American (ß = -.34, p < .001) students but not among Argentinean students. The hypothesised role of nationality as a moderator of the relationship between perceived social stigma for receiving therapy and attitudes towards seeking therapy was confirmed. Implications for research and training are discussed. Suggestions are made for English and American clinical psychology training programs to raise awareness on social stigma associated with receiving therapy. Section C presents a critical appraisal of the process of conducting the present major research project, including learning outcomes, limitations, implications, and areas for future research.

Ashdown, M. S. D. "Personal projected displays." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2004. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.596182.

Full text
Abstract:
I present a system called the Escritoire that uses a novel configuration of overlapping projectors to create a large desk display that fills the area of a conventional desk and also has a high resolution region in front of the user for precise work. The projectors need not be positioned exactly—the projected imagery is warped using standard 3D video hardware to compensate for rough projector positioning and oblique projection. Calibration involves computing planar homographies between the 2D co-ordinate spaces of the warped textures, projector framebuffers, desk, and input devices. The video hardware can easily perform the necessary warping and achieves 30 frames per second for the dual-projector display. Oblique projection has proved to be a solution to the problem of occlusion common to front-projection systems. The combination of an electromagnetic digitizer and an ultrasonic pen allows simultaneous input with two hands. The pen for the non-dominant hand is simpler and courser than that for the dominant hand, reflecting the differing roles of the hands in bimanual manipulation. I give a new algorithm for calibrating a pen, that uses piecewise linear interpolation between control points. I also give an algorithm to calibrate a wall display at distance using a device whose position and orientation are tracked in three dimensions. The Escritoire software is divided into a client that exploits the video hardware and handles the input devices, and a server that processes events and stores all of the system state. Multiple clients can connect to a single server to support collaboration. Sheets of virtual paper on the Escritoire can be put in piles which can be browsed and reordered. As with physical paper this allows items to be arranged quickly and informally, avoiding the premature work required to add an item to a hierarchical file system. Another interface feature is pen traces, which allow remote users to gesture to each other. I report the results of tests with individuals and with pairs collaborating remotely. Collaborating participants found an audio channel and the shared desk surface much more useful than a video channel showing their faces. The Escritoire is constructed from commodity components, and unlike multi-projector display walls its cost is feasible for an individual user and it fits into a normal office setting. It demonstrates a hardware configuration, calibration algorithm, graphics warping process, set of interface features, and distributed architecture that can make personal projected displays a reality.

Abstract:
The creative project dealt with the artist creating a vocabulary of images derived from past and present cultures in order to create a series of highly personalized anthropological narratives. The artist intended the narrative drawings to invoke archaic moods rather than summon literal responses. The accomplishments of this creative project were further development of the artist's personal imagist style, success in relating personal anthropological observations through narratives, and progress in media experimentation. By creating more contrast between forms, by varying value against value and deep space against shallow space, the artist was able to achieve superior compositional studies.

Full text
Abstract:
Work towards the development of a new computer-assisted methodology for psychological study and intervention is described. This is referred to as the Personal Knowledge Methodology since it focuses on the elicitation and presentation of personal knowledge. Personal knowledge includes the knowledge individuals have of their life history, their behaviours, their moods, their relationships, their ambitions, and so on. Principles and techniques used in Knowledge Engineering form the basis of the design of the Personal Knowledge Methodology. At the heart of the methodology is the use of a suite of knowledge acquisition and modelling techniques. These are referred to as Personal Knowledge Techniques. Based on a review of a wide-range of literature, eight techniques were selected to be assessed for their possible use as Personal Knowledge Techniques. These included interview-based techniques, repertory grid techniques and diagram-based techniques. Two in-depth studies took place involving 18 participants and a total of 100 knowledge acquisition sessions. The results revealed that each of the eight techniques showed promise at efficiently capturing and structuring aspects of an individual’s personal knowledge. In addition, the techniques showed potential for providing help in allowing reflection and revealing insights. In particular, a technique based on the construction and use of a state transition network was found to be the most highly rated by the participants. A content analysis of the knowledge acquired formed the basis of an ontology of personal knowledge that would underpin many uses of the Personal Knowledge Methodology. The empirical work and analysis led to a number of ideas for future developments of the methodology and uses for the Personal Knowledge Techniques.

Abstract:

Branding of people is a relatively new concept within the branding area. This concept has grown rapidly and its importance is increasing. Our purpose of this thesis is to describe how a strong personal brand is developed and how it is sustained. We also want to highlight what factors that determine who will succeed to develop a strong personal brand and who will not and if the associations that other people have of you can be determined by the brand owner.

We have chosen to do a qualitative method by conducting interviews with five wellknown Swedish persons that we argue have or are beginning to develop strong personal brands within different areas.

The frame of reference consists of some concepts on traditional branding and models within the personal branding area. We found that the existing literature within personal branding was not sufficient to fulfil our purpose and therefore we have created a research model. The empirical findings are applied to the research model in the analysis.

We argue that the base to develop a strong personal brand is to truly know who you are and what you stand for. When you have a clear understanding about who you are, it is important to be consistent in the messages that you communicate in order to avoid confusion among other people. To have a strong personal brand, you also need to be well-known among more people than just your family and friends.

Personal branding is to a large extent about how other people perceive you and we argue that you can to some extent affect this image by being consistent and clear about who you are and what you stand for. People cannot see your thoughts, only your actions.

All people have a personal brand but we believe that the process to develop your personal brand depends on what goals you have with it and what you want to accomplish. All people do not gain anything by having a strong personal brand but we believe that all people can use some parts of the concept in order to know who you are and what you stand for.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates personal knowledge development in online learning environments and the impact that personal values have on it. Personal knowledge development was investigated from the perspective of Nonaka’s SECI model of organisational knowledge creation. This model served as the basis for an adapted model that conceptualises personal knowledge development in online learning at the individual level. The personal value types of the Schwartz Value Survey and the Portrait Values Questionnaire were adopted to measure personal values and their impact on personal knowledge development in online learning environments. Three data collection approaches were used. First, an exploratory study was conducted which elicited online learners’ experiences of their personal knowledge development in online learning; this study used online discussion forums for data collection. Second, a Delphi study was carried out. Experts were asked which of the ten individual-level value types by Schwartz are likely to be particularly relevant in the context of online learning. Third, an online survey was created. Its aim was to measure the impact that personal values and background variables, such as gender and age, have on personal knowledge development in online learning. A measurement instrument was devised that measures three of the SECI modes, namely Externalisation, Combination and Internalisation. This instrument measures the magnitude of online learners’ Externalisation and Combination activities as well as their level of Internalisation, i.e. the outcomes of personal knowledge development. Results of the exploratory study show that there are widely diverging experiences of personal knowledge development in online learning. The literature review suggests that the cultural situatedness of an online learning environment is an important influencing factor on personal knowledge development. The results of the Delphi study suggest that Self-Direction, Stimulation, and Achievement are particularly relevant value types in the context investigated here. Finally, the online survey confirms this view, as all three value types were found to be positively correlated with Externalisation, Combination, and Internalisation, with the exception of the Achievement-Combination relationship. A modified version of the SECI model is proposed, which extends the applicability of the original SECI model from the organisational to the individual level. It is argued that this model is suitable to describe personal knowledge development in the context of online learning. The study also contributes to closing the gap in research on the impact of personal values in the context investigated in this study. Moreover, a measurement instrument was created that can be used to measure Externalisation and Combination, i.e. personal knowledge development processes, and Internalisation, i.e. personal knowledge development outcomes.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Technology surrounds us with many daily Search tasks. However, there is a fundamental difference---one of user familiarity and control---that differentiates between search tasks in impersonal and personal search spaces. The World Wide Web itself is largely unknown, unfamiliar and impersonal to a user. In contrast, users regularly search in more `personal' spaces, such as their own files, their web history, bookmarks, downloads, and so on. These spaces are personal because the user has more knowledge, familiarity and control over their content. A byproduct of these qualities is that search in personal spaces is typically navigational: to navigate through or to recover familiar information. This differs from web search, where very often a user is trying to discover new or unknown information. This important difference in search intent means that there are often few `correct' results for a query in personal spaces, which is something we must keep in mind when implementing search algorithms. This thesis leverages structure and metadata to build novel algorithms for improving search in several important personal search spaces: finding a file in a file hierarchy, website navigation on a mobile phone browser, tag-based search in an online bookmarking system, and sponsoring content on mobiles. The proposed methods are highly practical and applicable to current real-life search problems that affect millions of users.
