Abstract:

Abstract:
Party competition for votes in free and fair elections involves complex interactions by multiple actors in political landscapes that are continuously evolving, yet classical theoretical approaches to the subject leave many important questions unanswered. This book offers the first comprehensive treatment of party competition using the computational techniques of agent-based modeling. This exciting new technology enables researchers to model competition between several different political parties for the support of voters with widely varying preferences on many different issues. The book models party competition as a true dynamic process in which political parties rise and fall, a process where different politicians attack the same political problem in very different ways, and where today's political actors, lacking perfect information about the potential consequences of their choices, must constantly adapt their behavior to yesterday's political outcomes. This book shows how agent-based modeling can be used to accurately reflect how political systems really work. It demonstrates that politicians who are satisfied with relatively modest vote shares often do better at winning votes than rivals who search ceaselessly for higher shares of the vote. It reveals that politicians who pay close attention to their personal preferences when setting party policy often have more success than opponents who focus solely on the preferences of voters, that some politicians have idiosyncratic “valence” advantages that enhance their electability—and much more.

Arias, Xela. Xela Arias. Muller e literatura. Real Academia Galega, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.32766/rag.373.

Full text
Abstract:

Forker, Diana. Ergativity in Nakh–Daghestanian. Edited by Jessica Coon, Diane Massam, and Lisa Demena Travis. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198739371.013.35.

Abstract:
This chapter presents an analysis of ergativity and more general alignment in the Nakh-Daghestanian (or East Caucasian) language family. The surveyed constructions are gender and person agreement on verbs, case marking, valency changing operations, imperatives, reflexive and reciprocal constructions, conjunction reduction, complement control and the lexicon. In accordance with previous studies on this topic, I show that the evidence for ergativity is mainly to be found in the morphology. The syntactic alignment shows tendencies towards accusativity or neutral, but clearly no indications for ergative subjects. This is in line with researchers such as Kibrik who describes Nakh-Daghestanian languages as dominated by (semantic) roles.

Abstract:
The world has an employee engagement crisis. Low employee engagement has a detrimental impact not only on employee performance and well-being but also on organizational outcomes, including revenue and profitability. This chapter sets out the argument that a key predictor of employee engagement (and therefore performance and well-being) is hope. The relationship between these variables is unpacked from a theoretical and empirical perspective. While the literature has tended to focus on the agency and pathways components of hope theory, this chapter argues that much more attention should given to the fact that hope rests on the pursuit of positively valenced, personally valued, meaningful goals. The chapter offers suggestions on how organizations and employees might amplify hope, engagement, and positive outcomes in the workplace by focusing on goals that matter not only to the organization but to employees also.
