Abstract:
Patients with different diseases may faint or lose consciousness and require emergency assistance. They cannot know in advance that they will need help. Today, there are security alarms but communication and technology of these alarms have very limited functions. This report describes a final year project where we developed a prototype of a product, GSM- personal alarm. The prototype continuously monitors the patient's pulse and if the pulse is greater than or less than the threshold values specified by the doctor, the alarm system will send an SMS message to an alarm help receiver. The system works equally well at home or outdoors. It uses the GSM network and thus increases the communication range.

Abstract:
Older women and men were participants in this qualitative research of three case studies of community theatre. Their stories, gathered through in-depth interviews and participant observation of the theatre projects over a four year period, informed the development of a theoretical model of leisure as process. Through devising and presenting their theatre pieces, 50 older people, ranging in age from 45-8 5 years, with differing cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, reflected on personal experiences, negotiated their own processes for working collaboratively, and presented the stories of theft lives publicly in a way which affirmed their actions and understandings of themselves and theft world. Interviews with more than 30 of these people allowed an analysis of the ways in which older people negotiated the processes of play-building and constructed meaning in their lives at a time when the social structures of paid work and family were becoming less central as people moved into their third age. This research has located the study of individual agency through leisure in the context of the social structures which shape constraints to leisure and in turn limit individual agency. As such, the research has been concerned both with the self and with social relationship and has theorised leisure as a process of negotiation. Since process implies change over time, the research methods used and the leisure context selected for study were also process oriented. The research methodology was emergent and took on qualities of action research as the study progressed. By focusing on community theatre as the social context for leisure, the nexus between community development, community theatre and action research was examined and found to inform a broader understanding of leisure as process. The research has also expanded knowledge of community theatre as a collaborative process which draws on individual and collective reflections to build public presentations of issues of concern to participants. The processes of community theatre have received no attention to date in the leisure literature. The negotiation of self takes place in different social contexts for women and for men, for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians, for old and young, and for people from different socio-economic backgrounds. This research demonstrated that changes in personal situations as a result of the aging process, changes in family context and changes in work context are associated with changes in the negotiation of self, and these changes are expressed through leisure activity as well as other involvements less clearly classified as leisure. Purposive aspects of leisure assumed greater significance as people grew older and this was expressed in the culture of busyness and a pride in 'never being home'. Older women, in particular, developed friendships and community networks outside the family unit as relationships with husbands and children changed. These social connections were found to facilitate difficult transitions such as divorce or the death of a spouse. Community theatre supported the development of community networks, and presented an opportunity to claim a voice in the public arena and challenge the invisibility of older age. The research added to knowledge about constraints on leisure involvement by older people, and identified personal, social and material constraints. The most significant of these were the personal constraints of fear and of ill-health. However, participants in this research continued to negotiate a path through constraint in order to live their lives to the full. Analysis of their stories indicated that whilst constraint sometimes operated as a hierarchical process of control pushing people into isolation, people who were supported in their efforts to negotiate constraint through the development of community networks gained self-confidence and a heightened sense of agency. The processes of community development used in community theatre were found to facilitate the negotiation of constraint by developing personal skills and strengthening social support. The constructivist orientation of the research acknowledged the dialectical nature of knowledge construction and the possibility of social change through research. Aspects of action research were demonstrated in the processes of community theatre, which also seeks social as well as personal change. The research has a political motivation in that it seeks to strengthen the position of participants. Concern with the power relationship between researcher and researched facilitated a deeper understanding of the role of power in the process of leisure. The research opens up one small window on the processes whereby people may continue to live life to the full through active engagement in life and leisure.

Abstract:
Inspired by a trend in the European case law, which is meant to affect the national ones, the dissertation takes part to a topical debate among European academics on the putting aside the choice-of-law rules. It is about application of so-called recognition method to the foreign legal situations that haven’t been enacted in court. The purpose is to conceptualise this new method and to determine its scope and its modalities. Given the particularity of the task, the study necessarily bears on several pivotal topics of private international law but also of European law, general private law and jurisprudence

Kuhlmann, Kristin L. "Weight change in college freshmen| Personal, interpersonal and situational influences." Thesis, The University of New Mexico, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3597802.

Abstract:

Obesity has become the most significant noninfectious health risk in the United States, and the major causes of death and disability are shifting to chronic, non-communicable health conditions that are largely attributable to physical inactivity, overweight and obesity, and other diet-related factors. Among children and adolescents, the overweight/obesity rate is approaching 32%, with 17.9% of adolescents becoming obese. While the obesity rate has doubled in all age groups in the United States, it has tripled among young adults aged 18 to 28 years, and 70% of adolescents who are at a healthy weight will become overweight or obese as adults. At particular risk for rapid weight gain are college freshmen; the rate of weight gain in the first semester of college is twice that of same-age peers, and 77% of all college freshmen gain weight. The purpose of this descriptive study was to explore the personal, interpersonal, and situational factors that influenced weight change in freshmen. Seventy-six college freshman completed measures of demographics, height and weight, physical activity, sedentary behavior, nutritional intake, beverage and snack intake, alcohol consumption, stress management, interpersonal relations, spiritual growth, and health responsibility at baseline and 15 weeks later during their first semester of college. Participants gained a mean of 2.3 pounds, with 43% gaining clinically significant weight (≥ 3.5 pounds); 33% of the participants gained over five pounds. Two variables predicted 12% of this weight gain: a low level of health responsibility and having an underweight/normal BMI upon entrance to college. Identification of participants in the underweight/normal BMI category as the group at most risk for significant weight gain was an unexpected finding that merits further exploration. In addition, findings indicate that strategies are needed to create stronger support systems, to increase the level of health responsibility, and to encourage college freshmen to regularly perform behaviors to attain, or maintain, a healthy weight throughout the first year of college.

Abstract:
This research is based on the acknowledgement of the profound transformations in production and organization within enterprises. Economical globalisation and exchange liberalization have, indeed, induced constant requirements in flexibility and adaptability. Massive use of New Information and Communication Technologies (N. T. I. C. ) constitute one of the most convincing effects of it. Before these postulates, another one emerges : low qualified labour force seem to be the less prepared to face these evolutions. Stakes in training appear to be imperative. In this perspective, we propose a cognitive analytical method of the task, where concepts are inspired by methodological principles of the analysis of the task in cognitive ergonomics, by Jean Piaget's operating theory of intelligence as well as Pierre Higelé's work in this field. This methodology of analysis is centred : - on one hand, on the formalization of the outlines of task stipulated in terms of operations and intellectual level required, - on the other hand, on the precise location of the cognitive progress of the operator in working situation. Taking into account the principle of measure of distances between the ordered and the real task, we propose - every time it is justified - a training centred on the reduction of these distances. In this field, we were inspired by works in cognitive remediation, and particulary on the ARL (Work-groups of Logical Reasoning)

Caudill, Helene L. (Helene Litowsky). "An Empirical Investigation of Personality and Situational Predictors of Job Burnout." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1996. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc278937/.

Full text
Abstract:
Empirical research exploring the complex phenomenon of job burnout is still considered to be in its infancy stage. One clearly established stream of research, though, has focused on the antecedents of the three job burnout components: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. In particular, situational characteristics have received a great deal of attention to date. Four situational factors: (1) role ambiguity, (2) role conflict, (3) quantitative role overload, and (4) organizational support were included in this analysis to test their significance as predictors of job burnout. Another set of antecedents that has received far less attention in job burnout research is personal dispositions. Individual differences, most notably personality traits, may help us understand why some employees experience burnout whereas others do not, even within the same work environment. Four personality characteristics: (1) self-esteem, (2) locus of control, (3) communal orientation, and (4) negative affectivity were included to test their significance as predictors of job burnout. An on-site, self-report survey instrument was used. A sample of 149 human service professionals employed at a large government social services department voluntarily participated in this research. The main data analysis techniques used to test the research hypotheses were canonical correlation analysis and hierarchical analysis of sets. While role ambiguity showed no significant associations with any of the three job burnout components, the remaining situational factors had at least one significant association. Among all the situational characteristics, quantitative role overload was the strongest situational predictor of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, while organizational support was the strongest situational predictor of personal accomplishment. The personality predictor set as a whole showed a significant relationship with each of the job burnout components, providing strong proof that dispositional effects are important in predicting job burnout. Among all the personality characteristics, negative affectivity was the strongest personality predictor of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, while communal orientation was the strongest personality predictor of personal accomplishment. Comparisons between the personality and situational predictor sets revealed that personality characteristics were the stronger predictor for all three of the job burnout components. No interactions among the situational and personality predictors proved significant.

Abstract:
This survey presents four situations of change in french hospitals and health clinics'professionnal techniques. These situations take place in inhouse training and developement interventions aimed at change, considering the money invested in them. Two method are used to identify a communicative structure, as well as to build a communicative analysis based on the four situations : - the method of phenomeno-structural analysis, inspired by levis strauss's structural analysis and phenomenology by husserl, modeled by alex mucchielli. Thanks to this method, a communication structure, result of the play played by the actors, has been brought out from situations of change. The logice behind the play is to make the change impossible. - the method of communicative analysis we have created using the six communicative process that take place in situation of communication,as identified by alex mucchielli. This method has helped us understand the different communicative phenomena which make change impossible. This survey has demonstrated that communicative analysis allows to model situations and, therefore, to compare their architecture. The analysis refines the comprehension of these phenomena and their possible treatment. We have come to the conclusion that current training and development techniques nourish the play of impossible change implicitly played by the actors. We suggest new training and development tehniques that take into account the elements of the situation and use the information and communication science concepts and tools render change possible with the actors

Janiec, Grygo Milena Urszula. "Situating Migrants in Contemporary Japan: From Public Spaces to Personal Experiences." Scholar Commons, 2016. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/6267.

Abstract:
Within the broader literature on migration, Japan is often portrayed as straddling two categories, one of a homogenous country and another of a multicultural society. The arguments on both sides are supported through the historical evidence, analysis of media resources, as well as narratives of Japanese residents. This inquiry seeks to highlight voices of migrants within these debates. This dissertation focuses on the urban – rural residential experiences of international migrants in Kanto and Tohoku regions. This inquiry treats international migration processes in terms of moving between the contexts of different countries as well as between urban – rural locations. These global – local experiences of migrants are set within broader milieu of the social and spatial stratifications created through neoliberal competition. The theoretical framework for this analysis is based on post-structural understandings of identity, migration, and economy. This study draws on qualitative methods, including, ethnographic data, interviews, content and textual analysis of job advertisements, as well as cognitive mapping. These sources allow us to create a unique portrait of migrant subjectivity that pulls from different contexts of fluid, spatial identities which mediate migrants’ interpretations of living and working in neoliberal Japan. The findings of this dissertation support the thesis that intersectional social identities such as gender, ethnicity, and social class, have a spatial component.

Tshabalala, Ntathakusa P. "The relationship between courage and personal moral philosophy in a morally intense situation." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/52335.

Full text
Abstract:
When faced with a morally intense situation, determining what the right thing to do is easy. Instead, ultimately doing the right thing is a major source of ethical dilemmas for business leaders. This is due to the often-conflicting business interest against the individual s personal values. It therefore follows that a person s courage should play a huge role in assisting business leaders to remain true to their convictions. As such, this study set out to investigate the relationship between an individual s levels of courage and their personal moral philosophy when placed in a morally intense situation. Using a quasi-experimental approach, this study created a morally intense situation by manipulating Jones (1991) six dimensions of moral intensity. Research participants were requested to experimentally immerse themselves in the case study and to take decisions on various situations posed to them. All participants were then measured on personal levels of courage using Woodard-Pury s (2007) courage scale; and on their personal moral philosophies using Forsyth s (1980) Ethics Positioning Questionnaire (EPQ). The results were statistically analysed to determine if there is a relationship between business leaders levels of courage and their moral philosophies; and the influence that these have when they were placed in a morally intense situation. The participants of this study were 118 first year Masters of Business Administration (MBA) students who occupy on average middle-manager positions within large international corporates in South Africa. The study found that when faced with ethical dilemmas in the workplace; as presented through the morally intense case study; those business leaders with a relative moral philosophy take decisions in line with their personal moral philosophies. In addition, the study proved that though there is no relationship between courage and personal moral philosophy in a morally intense situation; for those with a relative ideology; the willingness to act might have a moderation effect when an individual is placed in a morally intense situation. This means that the willingness component of courage accounts for some level of the ultimate decision taken. This is particularly positive for business as it indicates that though business leaders do not need to be courageous to do what they believe is right, they have to be willing to act righteously in order for the probability of taking the right action to increase. The study found this to be true for situations with high levels of moral intensity.

Hobson, Gina. "The impact of personal and situational factors on self-presentation concerns in sport." Thesis, University of Chichester, 2002. http://eprints.chi.ac.uk/800/.

Full text
Abstract:
Leary (1992) suggests a self-presentation perspective could fruitfully be applied to sport. In support of this, early research has revealed that self-presentation concerns underpin a large percentage of competitive anxiety and stress in sport (James & Collins, 1997; Wilson & Eklund, 1998). However, little progress has been made towards the identification of athletes who are most at risk of experiencing self-presentation concerns. The main aim of this thesis was to examine self-presentation concerns in athlete populations. More specifically, the aims were firstly to develop a valid measure of self-presentation concerns in sport. Secondly, the impact of gender, age, skill level and type of sport on self-presentation concerns was examined. To achieve these aims five studies, including three validation, one quantitative and one qualitative study, were conducted. The validation studies provided evidence to suggest that the Self-Presentation in Sport Questionnaire (SPSQ) is a valid and reliable measure of self-presentation concerns in sport, suitable for administration to athletes over the age of eighteen. However, shortened versions ofthe SPSQ, suitable for children and adults, demonstrated a weakened internal structure and consequently these instruments ought not to be administered in their present state. The quantitative study investigated the impact of gender, skill level and type of sport on self-presentation concerns in swimmers, water polo players and divers utilising the SPSQ. The findings indicated that females exhibit consistently higher self-presentation concerns compared to males, as do non-elite athletes when compared to the elite. Furthermore, self-presentation concerns were affected by the situation in different ways dependent on the athletes' gender. Finally, differences in the self-presentation concerns experienced in adolescence and adulthood were qualitatively assessed. Differences were identified across the type of self-presentation concerns experienced, the strategies used to make an impression, and the targets of self-presentation. Overall the research conducted provides a valid measure of self-presentation concerns in sport, which can be utilised in future self-presentation studies. Furthermore, the impact of a number of individual and situational variables on self-presentation concerns has been revealed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Could we consider that solutions to upgrade the skills of employees lacking 3RS'; (Reading, wRiting, aRithmetics) be considered as a source of competitive advantage for the companies and organizations? What are the conditions for economic and social performance of those preventive actions? This dissertation proposes to address this issue. Based on the hypothesis that performance of enterprises is hindered by poor knowledge management within the companies and that illeteracy tends to create many dysfunctions, the first part presents an analysis of basic skills in literacy. It draws the attention on psychological, sociological and managerial factors of the illeteracy phenomenon while enhancing the strategies of the actors within organization to conceal the probem, as if it were a taboo. This thesis strives to analyse the dysfunctions costs through five intervention-research processes. The analysis of the flaws of traditional forms of training methods, the hidden costs of non-action to cope with this phenomenon or of making redundant these low skilled workers brings evidence of the possible performance of preventive actions. Based on those results as well as in five other case studies of enterprises which have undertaken successful actions, this thesis proposes, in a second part, an internal and external intervention cooperation to foster the sustainability of the actions aimed at enhancing the skills of illeterate employees. It deals of engineering, contents and organisation of retraining schemes in the companies and organizations in order to enhance the potential gains stemming from such actions. Our approach to fix illeteracy dysfunctions depends on the willingness of enterprises to learn how to cope with it, either alone or through cooperation with partners. This thesis proposes a course of action that consists of a remedy to illeteracy, integrating the efforts of individual actors, collective actors and actors in the environment of companies and organizations

Abstract:
An individual’s bad news reporting behavior has been studied from a number of perspectives and has resulted in a variety of research streams including the MUM effect (or reluctance to transmit bad news), whistle-blowing, and organizational silence. While many scholars in different areas have studied reporting behavior, it has not been widely discussed in the information systems literature. This dissertation research addresses an individual’s bad news reporting behavior (and its antecedents) in the troubled IT project context. Many social phenomena are multi-causal (Hollander 1971). The silence phenomenon involved in an individual’s bad news reporting behavior is multi-causal too. While prior research has identified many antecedents to the bad news reporting behavior, it has not provided any systematic approach for categorizing them. In this dissertation, the antecedents are categorized into three different levels: personal factors (i.e., individual-level factors), situational factors (i.e., project-level factors), and organizational factors. This research empirically investigates how the antecedents at different levels affect (i.e., encourage or discourage) an individual’s decision to report or not report bad news in the IT project context. The dissertation follows a multi-paper model, and includes three independent, empirical studies, each with its own research model focusing on personal, situational, and organizational factors.

Abstract:
Our research focuses on the confrontation and the evolution of individual moral judgements in the business context. We attempt to theorize ethics in relation to what managers actually do in their daily activities. We develop a conceptualization of ethical judgment as negotiated order (Strauss et al. , 1963). In the light of this perspective, ethical judgment is considered as a negotiation process over moral choices involving various actors who have competing definitions of the situations in which they are engaged. The legitimatization tactics used by the individuals in order to justify their ethical judgment are analysed through the typology developed by Boltanski and Thevenot (1991). Our empirical work is based on a three-year participant observation in a French software company. This study enables us to confirm our conceptualization of ethics as negotiated order. Our longitudinal analysis also highlights the instrumentalization of ethics by employees in order to serve their personal interests

Abstract:
In line with a “cross-cultural” research work on ageing in a migratory context, this thesis is a primary investigation on the role that the following play: culture, the migratory process (through induced identity readjustments), and the relationship between the subject and ageing. While we agree with Freud (1915) that we cannot represent our own death in our subconscious, it appears that only culture can enable the subject to give meaning to live and face death by accepting his/her mortal status (Govindama, 2000, 2006). As for the migrant subject, while there is refusal of death in his/her host society, there rather seems to be death celebration in his/her home society. We are all the more interested in the migrant subject’s case because of his/her double cultural identity, which implies that he/she has to refer to a cultural, symbolic environment to be determined. Following a clarification of the concept of ageing, some illustration from our field research work at the Rouen-based Foyers SONACOTRA will enable us to access the link between psyche and culture that is being developed among our ageing subjects

Pana-Martin, Francine. Thesis, Paris, CNAM, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015CNAM1048/document.

Full text
Abstract:
This research is about the professional gestures of tutors accompanying newly appointed teachers. In the interview that follows the observation of a class, which we based our study on, the tutor’s activity is analysed through the lens of professional gestures, mobilised in their operating and symbolic dimensions, and enriched by the notion of professional amplitude. This last one supposes that the professional gesture does not have an axiological dimension in itself, but that it strongly depends on the accompanying relation built between the two partners of the interview. In the continuity of works concerning professional gestures, Jorro (1998, 2002, 2006, 2011), Alin (2006, 2010) and Bucheton (2008, 2009), this thesis studies the professional gestures of the tutor during the interview post class observation and makes possible a reading of a situated professional acting. The professional gesture, seen as a body movement towards the other, is redefined as a verbal and/or corporeal interaction, intended and conscientised by the tutor, of variable amplitude. The results allow us to highlight seven professional gestures from the tutors

Abstract:
This thesis investigates how the personal value systems of executive teams in privately owned Chinese companies influence their organisation's prospects for sustainable competitive success. The research aim is to establish a relationship between managerial value systems, corporate culture, P-O fit and affective employee commitment. The research theory is based on an extensive and rigorous literature review. It was tested in an empirical study composed of semi-structured interviews and quantitative research for which a new research tool has been created, consisting of England's (1967b) Personal Values Questionnaire (PVQ), Cameron and Quinn's (1999) Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument (OCAI), Posner et al.'s (1985) Shared Values Scale and Meyer and Allen's (1991) Affective Commitment Scale. The present study contributes to the existing knowledge base by testing and validating this instrument for research in China. It takes stock of the currently prevailing hierarchy of personal values among executive managers, and establishes a relationship between the identified value preferences and types of organisational culture, as well as between the strength of such systems and levels of employee-organisation value congruency and affective employee commitment. It was further found that in the majority of sample firms both executive management teams and employees characterised their corporate culture as multi-dimensional.

Abstract:
This is a qualitative interview study researching the experience engine room personnel have with using headset communication in their work onboard. A total of six crewmembers were interviewed about their experiences and how headset communication had affected their ability to perform their work, personal safety and time efficiency. The results showed that communication had improved with the use of headsets and that speech communication where no longer limited by high noise levels which in turn leads to less strain on the voice. The interviewed crew members testified that the improved communication facilitated their work and enhanced the personal safety by decreasing the risk for misunderstandings and increasing their situational awareness. Increased ergonomics in situations with difficult working postures and limited space in comparison with hand held radios were also observed as an advantage with headset communication. Time efficiency was perceived to improve since the availability of other crewmembers on the radio increased and decreased the need for moving to another area to communicate which at the same time lead to faster response times. Increased availability of crewmembers on the radio could also shorten the time before an accident in the engine room is detected since a failure to answer a radio call would be seen as irregular behavior.

Abstract:

Research and development on vehicle safety has lately started to direct its focus towards how to actively support the driver and make it easier for her to drive safely through letting Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) have effect on how the driver interacts with the vehicle and the surrounding traffic. This requires research on both how the driver and vehicle perform in different situations, in terms of psychology, cognition and individual differences. In addition, physical limitations and requirements of the driver and the vehicle must be taken into account. Therefore scenarios for evaluation of these systems are required. In the area of user-centered design a rather new method, Personas, is being adopted. This thesis tries to explore if the Persona method is a viable tool for creating scenarios for such evaluations. Experiences after completing this work imply that personas indeed is a viable way to include aspects and raise issues concerning individual variability and situational context in ADAS scenarios.

Abstract:
In general, having a job is a satisfactory factor for the majority of persons. However, most of the employees are stress-prone, which has an important effect both on individuals and on structures. Those structures often do not possess relevant standards to thoroughly evaluate this phenomenon. The lack of precise knowledge about stress at work and its origins, especially the two dimensions of personal status and professional status in France, has led us to conduct a thorough diagnosis for several years on several plants of a large industrial company. The chosen company is emblematic of the industrial labour organization in France. The mapping of stress at work, with the identification of mainly exposed populations, should be applicable to other organizations to quickly set an anti-stress action plan, without first making a detailed inventory; for the greatest benefit of employees and the work environment and production. The different stakeholders interested in deploying a policy against stress, the employees, the hierarchy, Human Resources Departments, occupational psychologists, occupational doctors have been solicited as part of this research. After a general diagnosis, facing the large number of possible research topics and because of the lack of studies on the relationship between staff’s personal status and "professional situation" with the other factors already integrated within conventional models about stress at work, we focused on this issue by defining a theoretical model to be validated experimentally through questionnaires. In this research we explain how we found that among the factors related to stress at work, the category "professional situation" influenced this phenomenon more than the "personal status" category.Among the factors in the category "professional situation", the most important in decreasing order are: socio-professional category, English practice, and seniority. Among the factors in the "personal status" category, the most important in decreasing order are: the level of education, gender and age. This finding is rather good news for companies because they will be able to reduce stress at work by acting on the "professional situation", knowing that they cannot interfere with the personal status of employees. This contribution should be supplemented by other researches to enhance the completeness of the diagnosis about stress at work and to conduct complete actions plans covering all topics

Avila, Ramon A. "The selling situation as a mediator of the personality/sales performance relationship: an empirical investigation." Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/52286.

Abstract:
This dissertation reports an investigation of the personality-sales performance relationship and the effect of long and short selling cycle situations as a moderator of this relationship. Research in the area of salesperson performance has failed to establish critical theoretical foundations for testing and predicting salesperson success. Many researchers have attempted to generalize results over all categories of salespeople without consideration of those tasks and traits crucial to success in specific categories of sales employment. Three theoretical frameworks are discussed (trait, situation, interaction) and the interactionist theoretical framework is proposed as a necessary step to study the personality-sales performance relationship. Hypotheses were generated that suggested a personality characteristic may be related to sales success in one selling situation but not another. The research was conducted in a two week period by surveying salespeople from a large computer manufacturer. The three independent variables were: (1) planfulness; (2) tenacity; and (3) locus of control. Multiple dependent variables attempted to measure both objective and subjective measures of sales success. Confirmatory factor analysis was run on the sales-performance measures to check for the unidimensionality of the construct. It was found that the objective and subjective measures were not unidimensional. Based on the sales managers inexperience in rating salespeople, the objective measure of percent of quota was chosen as the best measure of sales success. In general, the data analysis supported the hypothesized effects. While the results support the premise that the personality-sales performance relationship is moderated by the long and short selling cycle situations, the tenacity hypothesis showed weak effects. Results of the dissertation are discussed with respect to the major finding and significance to personal selling research. The dissertation concludes with a discussion of the study limitations and directions for future research.

Paris 2, 2005. http://www.theses.fr/2005PA020032.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Introduction: War, weaponry and armour are constantly evolving. This results in variations in types of injuries occurring. Previous reviews show an incidence of head, face, and neck injuries (HFNI) during the 20th century ranging from 16% to 43% in war and war type situations but, anatomically, the head, face, and neck accounts for approximately 9% of the total body area. In recent years the use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) in terrorist conflict has risen and this has been shown to give a rise in the prevalence of HFNI.Aim: To examine the proportion of HFNI in the total injury panorama of soldiers and civilians wounded in war type situations from 2000 to 2010. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted according to Goodman. Results: Ten articles concerning conflicts and attacks in Afghanistan, Israel, Iraq and London were included and presented an incidence of HFNI on 25% (mean, range 6.4-39.4%).The wide spread in results is caused of different anatomical exclusions and inclusions but also because of the difficulties in comparing different conflicts to each other. The real mean incidence is therefore, most likely, higher. Common and particular maxillofacial war injuries are also discussed. Conclusion: Explosive devices account for the bulk of injury mechanism. Facial lacerations are the most common HFNI and the majority of fractures occur in the lower third of the face. A rise in the use of IED will mostly likely cause an increase in the prevalence of HFNI in the future.

Paris 8, 2003. http://www.theses.fr/2003PA082241.

Full text
Abstract:
Victims have long been the cast offs from the law; in fact law institutions have never really minded about their lot. The mere reading of Article 1382 of the French Civil Code highlights the fact that our legislative system is based only on the person responsible and does not take victims into consideration. This elision undoubtedly impairs the laws of responsibility in the medical field. This lack of consideration from the law may account for the altruism expressed by the magistrates faced with the precarious situation of the victims and that can de felt as well during the procedure (First part) as during the trial itself (Second part) and the process of compensation (Third part). Even if the study of the different compensatory phases clearly shows that the magistrates think carefully about the victims' viewpoint, the law nonetheless lacks of consideration for the victim whose situation stills bears the traces of instability and iniquity
