Abstract:
Focusing on the home movies in the context of post-modern culture, this dissertation intends to debate the question of authenticity, as well as the process of cultural legitimation of filmic sub-genres originated in the sixties: the diary film and the personal film. The proliferation of this type of film production something in-between the autoethnographies and the art films challenges the social sciences and, more specifically, the contemporary visual anthropology to understand the appearance of new audiovisual forms of social representation. The important work of Bourdieu on the social rules of photography is a starting point to debate the aesthetics of private family domain and the social rules of amateur film

Abstract:
This thesis analyses the effect of the personal history of Arthur and Corinne Cantrill, two Australian independent filmmakers, on their style of filmmaking. It analyses their representation of film-form experimentation within national Australian art in a range of independent film works. It reflects on their cultural relation to the general history of independent filmmaking in Australia, America and Europe. It studies the circumstances tat resulted in the appearance of the Cantrills' experimental film and their relation to international art theories and film experimentation. This thesis will examine how the Cantrills' film works, which were often critical of conventional filmmaking styles, and their critical writing, statements and promotion of their independent and experimental film work contributed significantly to theoretical discussion and argument about the physical nature of film within Australia. This examination is explored through asking and answering the central question: The work of Aurtheur and Corinne Cantrell is theoretically drawn from a tradition of European arts and visually drawn from Australian landscape and urban culture; can their work be identified and undertood as Australian art?

Dziekonska, Elzbieta Stefania. "The best of all worlds : public, personal, and inner realms in the films of Krzysztof Kieslowski." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2002. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1382592/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the oeuvre of Krzysztof Kielowski. In particular, I examine claims made by Kielowski and many critics that in the 1980s the director moved away from filming the public world, which had been crucial to his work since he began filming in the late 1960s and became instead primarily concerned with the inner world. Although I agree that Kieslowski increasingly shifted his emphasis to the inner life, I argue that any attempt to abandon the public world in his later films was in fact of more limited scope than his claims suggest and his focus on the inner sphere neither absolute nor lacking in ambivalence. I distinguish between three realms of existence in Kielowski's narratives: the public sphere, namely, public life be it socio-political, economical, or work-related; the personal sphere, consisting of the individual's family and close friends; and the inner sphere, comprising the intimate emotional and mental life of the individual. By extensively examining Kielowski's treatment of these spheres and how they interact with and inform both one another and the films, I aim to demonstrate that the public and personal realms continued play a significant part in the productions of the 1980s and 1990s, regardless of Kielowski's claims otherwise, and result in more complex, multi-layered, and ambiguous narratives than is usually recognised. In distinguishing between the spheres that make up the individual's existence, I discuss the concomitant differences between public and inner realities. I examine the complications and ambiguities that arose from the combined presence of these quite distinct realities in the final works and end by looking at how they influenced Kielowski's decision to abandon fihnmaking in the mid-1990s. My thesis is also a career-survey of Kielowski's oeuvre and; in addition to substantiating my arguments, I simultaneously discuss what I believe to be other interesting and important aspects of Kielowski and his work, including the financing and censorship of his films, his political tendencies, his representation of his male and female characters as well as his distinction between youth and adulthood, his collaborative method; his relationship with his audience, and his critical reception. In doing so I aim to provide a detailed overview of Kielowski's entire career which can stand alone as a self-contained and comprehensive reference work and thus fill the current gap in English-language studies of Kielowski.

Abstract:
My thesis explores the act of violation in the context of trauma and healing through the use of personal narratives and experimental film. My research allows personal storytelling to transform into a larger and more universal theme of generational trauma and dysfunction. Through a feminist lens, I challenge social norms of body autonomy for the sick and abused, capitalism’s social effects on the poor, and passed down maternal lessons from the women who are doing the best that they can with the lives and opportunities that they have been given. This work is created in spite of the labels my mother, the women before her, and I may hold. It is an act of resistance to who and what is allowed to be seen or heard. It is my confession, but it is not my confession alone.

Focusing in the documentary cinema as a way of representing the testimony of traumatic experiences in cinema, this project emphasizes the creative procedures found in the film Shoah (1985), by Claude Lanzmann, and in the series Histoire(s) du Cinéma (1988/1998), by Jean-Luc Godard. More specifically, it reflects on how documentary films has put us in contact with painful historical events, understanding the creative procedures used in its conception. Our corpus is based notably on the works above mentioned. The most important theoretical frameworks are the studies who deal with documentary theory, as presented by Bill Nichols theory and, in Brazil, Fernão Ramos. Our research also counterpoints the issue of representation of the catastrophe, using the studies of both Georges Didi-Huberman and, in Brazil, Márcio Seligmann-Silva. The relevance of the research is related to the intense debates that surround today the testimony, assigning to the images a role in the representability of the extreme, previously interdicted
Rutherford, Andrew. "Introducing hippocratic log files for personal privacy control." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/171.

Full text
Abstract:
The rapid growth of the Internet has served to intensify existing privacy concerns of the individual, to the point that privacy is the number one concern amongst Internet users today. Tools exist that can provide users with a choice of anonymity or pseudonymity. However, many Web transactions require the release of personally identifying information, thus rendering such tools infeasible in many instances. Since it is then a given that users are often required to release personal information, which could be recorded, it follows that they require a greater degree of control over the information they release. Hippocratic databases, designed by Agrawal, Kiernan, Srikant, and Xu (2002), aim to give users greater control over information stored in a data- base. Their design was inspired by the medical Hippocratic oath, and makes data privacy protection a fundamental responsibility of the database itself. To achieve the privacy of data, Hippocratic databases are governed by 10 key privacy principles. This dissertation argues, that asides from a few challenges, the 10 prin- ciples of Hippocratic databases can be applied to log ¯les. This argument is supported by presenting a high-level functional view of a Hippocratic log file architecture. This architecture focuses on issues that highlight the con- trol users gain over their personal information that is collected in log files. By presenting a layered view of the aforementioned architecture, it was, fur- thermore, possible to provide greater insight into the major processes that would be at work in a Hippocratic log file implementation. An exploratory prototype served to understand and demonstrate certain of the architectural components of Hippocratic log files. This dissertation, thus, makes a contribution to the ideal of providing users with greater control over their personal information, by proposing the use of Hippocratic logfiles.

Abstract:
People are at the center of many computer vision tasks, such as surveillance systems or self-driving cars. They are also at the center of most visual contents, potentially providing very large datasets for training models and algorithms. While stereoscopic data has been studied for long, it is only recently that feature-length stereoscopic ("3D") movies became widely available. In this thesis, we study how we can exploit the additional information provided by 3D movies for person analysis. We first explore how to extract a notion of depth from stereo movies in the form of disparity maps. We then evaluate how person detection and human pose estimation methods perform on such data. Leveraging the relative ease of the person detection task in 3D movies, we develop a method to automatically harvest examples of persons in 3D movies and train a person detector for standard color movies. We then focus on the task of segmenting multiple people in videos. We first propose a method to segment multiple people in 3D videos by combining cues derived from pose estimates with ones derived from disparity maps. We formulate the segmentation problem as a multi-label Conditional Random Field problem, and our method integrates an occlusion model to produce a layered, multi-instance segmentation. After showing the effectiveness of this approach as well as its limitations, we propose a second model which only relies on tracks of person detections and not on pose estimates. We formulate our problem as a convex optimization one, with the minimization of a quadratic cost under linear equality or inequality constraints. These constraints weakly encode the localization information provided by person detections. This method does not explicitly require pose estimates or disparity maps but can integrate these additional cues. Our method can also be used for segmenting instances of other object classes from videos. We evaluate all these aspects and demonstrate the superior performance of this new method

Abstract:

Haslam, Simon. "Personal legitimising : a substantive grounded theory in the context of small consultancy firms." Thesis, University of Strathclyde, 1999. http://oleg.lib.strath.ac.uk:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=21139.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis introduces the substantive grounded theory of personal legitimising. It has emerged from a study of small consulting firms. Personal legitimising is about how individuals in organisations influence their work to take account of personal priorities and agendas. Colloquially, it can be described as consultants 'getting away with it' The theory introduces six behavioural categories. These are called 'opportunistic accommodating', 'sequential impressioning', 'voluntary championing', 'support mustering', 'pseudo endorsing' and 'retrospective justifying'. The first four are concerned with how individuals align personal and work agendas. The latter two report strategies that individuals use to defend their territory. Personal legitimising makes the distinction between those strategies which contain 'implicit' legitimacy and those which are 'explicit' in nature. With implicit strategies, people are able to chose the direction of their endeavours without recourse to management. This freedom is afforded by them operating within the bounds of 'organisational tolerance'. A comparison with literature in the substantive area of management consulting notes the presence of many of the ingredients of personal legitimising, but no theoretical explanation that links them together. The theory has implications for practitioners regarding the consequences on organisational strategy of individual actions, creating an appealing working environment for people (consultants) who are readily employable elsewhere, and the management of marketing. This is set in a context where knowledge based working is likely to account for an even greater proportion of enterprise in the future. The study also suggests further research in the area of impression management, and helps illuminate the practicalities of grounded theory study.

Petersen, Candace. "Salesforce Involvement in New Product Predevelopment Activities of High Technology Firms." PDXScholar, 1996. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/1153.

Full text
Abstract:
The strongest correlate of new product success is understanding of market requirements early in the new product development (NPD) process. This is true in high technology environments where rapid change and chaotic market conditions prevail. Although a firm's salesforce is viewed as one of many sources of new product ideas and market information, the involvement of salespeople in NPD activities varies widely across firms. This study examines salesforce involvement in a firm's NPD predevelopment activities, i.e. idea generation and screening, preliminary market assessment, and concept evaluation. Because of the limits of existing research in this area, a two-phase research design was used. The first phase developed a scale for measuring salesforce involvement in NPD predevelopment activities. This scale was incorporated into a study model. The second phase tested the study model, a linkage of salesperson involvement level to organization and individual salesperson attributes. The scale-development sample consisted of 136 sales professionals. The resulting scale was a nineteen item, multi-dimensional measure incorporating three factors of involvement: involvement initiated by the salesperson, involvement initiated by NPD-Organization, and a salesperson's cognitive interest in NPD involvement. In the second phase of the study, a sample of 248 salespeople from nineteen companies completed self-administered written surveys. At the organization attribute level, the length of the NPD cycle was significantly associated with involvement subscale measures. In particular, the longer a firm's NPD cycle for product improvements, the less involvement the salesforce has in NPD-headquarters initiated involvement activities. A similar significant relationship exists between a firm's new product cycle time and the level of involvement in salesforce-initiated NPD predevelopment activities. At the study model's salesperson level, a series of factors were associated to NPD team-initiated and salesforce-initiated involvement subscales. These factors are a salesperson's: customer orientation, location distance from NPD, level of feedback from NPD, membership on NPD teams, knowledge of where to send NPD-related information, and belief that information communicated to NPD will be appropriately used. Study findings suggest that organizations can affect the degree of involvement that their salesforce or individual salespeople has in early phases of NPD.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates how firms navigate technological changes over time. Specifically, we determine whether firms follow a consistent strategy in regards to when they time their entry into technological waves. Resulting performance implications of these actions are also measured. The theoretical underpinnings of this study lie at the intersection of the technology literature, the learning school, firm evolutionary theory, and the resource-based view of the firm. Past studies have added clarity as to how firms behave within a single technological wave; however, investigations regarding firm actions over successive waves are needed if we are to truly understand which firm actions lead to long-term success. This study fills the research gap by investigating firm timing patterns over multiple successive waves of technology and the resulting long-term performance implications of these actions. Further, this study examines timing efforts over both competence enhancing (incremental) and competence destroying (architectural) cycles. The findings indicate that while technological follower firms are able to consistently repeat their timing strategy, technological leaders have a much more difficult time in repeating early entry timing. Repeated leadership entry was found to be difficult in both incremental and architectural cycles. Characteristics of those leaders able to repeat leadership entry are provided. While consistent entry timing was not found to impact market share, it was found to benefit firms by reducing their hazard rate. This hazard rate reduction for timing entry consistency, whether it is as a leader or as a follower, was observed during both incremental and architectural technological changes.

This bachelor thesis studies the experience of movies for Deaf and hard of hearing. The purpose is to study the possibilities of increasing the accessibility of movies, when you no longer can rely on the narrative audio. The investigative part of the thesis consists of two parts. The first part consists of a survey where the target group, Deaf and hard of hearing where asked to describe their experience of movies. The second part of the investigation consists of a practial test of the survey results in the form of a media conformation.  Through being humble and inclusive, and with the use of subtitles we can make our film more accessible to the Deaf and the hard of hearing.

Larsson, Fredrik, and Filip Hallengren. "Andrapersonsvy i film." Thesis, Blekinge Tekniska Högskola, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:bth-14562.

Full text
Abstract:
In this research we have explored how second-person view can be defined and applied in film. Since there is no established definition for second-person view, we originate from the gaming industry’s definitions of first- and third-person view to form a theory on how it can be defined. This origin is compared and relativized to the use of the terms first-, second- and third-person in grammar, literature, narrative and philosophy. With the use of the research methodology grounded theory, Donna J. Haraway’s technoscientific concept situated knowledges and diffraction, Karen Barad’s discussion on diffraction, and Michael Pauen’s diskussion on intersubjectivity, we argue for how second-person view can be defined and applied. We form a theory on how second-person view can be defined: Second-person view is positioned in the eyes of the person involved in the interaction/situation with the first-person. The theory is then adapted to be applied in film: Second-person view positions the camera in the eyes of the person that the protagonist is interacting with. From this theory we have made films with second-person view, and tested second-person view in reality. We then have seen how second-person view effects and diffracts the film medium, by giving a new view into the medium. From this research, there is much that can be evolved and improved with the definition of second-person view, and how it can be applied.

Abstract:
In contemporary cult film scholarship, the experiences of cult fans are too often subject to scholarly speculation rather than empirical observation, and tend to be limited to certain kinds of audience responses - deviant, rebellious, subversive. Even in instances where actual cult fans have been considered at all, scholars have largely produced synchronic snapshots rather than insights derived from sustained programmes of audience research. This study focuses on a faction of the increasingly visible cult following which has emerged in recent years around the British film The Wicker Man. Drawing on the personal testimonies of eight enduring fans of the film, I explicate and explore the range of experiences and complex processes involved in becoming and remaining a fan of The Wicker Man. I develop an approach to cult film fandom which aims to provide an account of the origins and evolution of a specific cult film formation. Combining textual analysis with a rich body of ethnographic research I collected over eight years, I tease out the complexities of the film's initial import for these fans and proceed to examine how their relationships with the film develop over time. In the meantime, I engage with a number of under-explored and uncharted concepts of cult which include issues relating to personal resonance, aesthetic experiences, affects, as well as the quasireligious dimension. The main argument of the study is that the cult film experience can be perceived as a form of personal mythopoesis -a process which engages the individual in modes of personal and collective mythmaking, and within which the integrity and coherence of the self is at stake. Drawing on theories in cognitive psychology and concepts originating from within personal mythology, I develop an original model of cult fan subjectivity which foregrounds the self's preconscious and experiential dimensions. Demonstrating the significance of generational factors and cultural location, I propose to show how the respondents in my study share a preconscious disposition to The Wicker Man. My study explicates and explores the relationship between cult film fandom and the mythmaking process by focusing on three specific trajectories through which the fan-text relationships analysed here develop. The first explores the formative experiences of these fans, emphasising early cultural investments which share aesthetic and thematic links with The Wicker Man and which predispose them to the film in a number of complex and fascinating ways. The second trajectory centres on the fans' initial encounters with the film, paying close attention to the aesthetic experiences they undergo and proceeding to observe the trace manifestations of these experiences in subsequent fan practices beyond the viewing context. The final trajectory examines the ways in which the fans continue to interact with the film over time, and discusses elements of their identities and experiences which uniquely position them in relation to The Wicker Man's dialectical treatment of myth. The conclusion draws together the main findings of the study and considers the relationship between personal mythopoesis, cult fandom and the processes of individuation to argue for ways of understanding cult mythopocsis in terms of a religious process.

Abstract:
Thesis (Masters Diploma (Information Technology))--Cape Technikon, Cape Town, 1994
Computer virus programs are generally perceived to be a threat to the information stored by computer users. This research evaluated the impact computer viruses have on information stored by computer users. The emphasis was on the effects of computer viruses rather than on the detail of their operation. The main hypotheses involved the question of whether or not computer viruses do pose a threat to the information stored by computer users. The effect of computer viruses on the information of users in industry was measured by sending a questionnaire to 388 companies country-wide. &~ average of 2l,5% of the respondents claimed detrimental effects to information stored on disk due to computer viruses. This and other data was used to guide laboratory experiments on the actual damage done by computer viruses to stored information. A set of test disks was prepared to represent programs and data of a typical PC user in industry. Fifteen different virus programs were used individually to infect the test disks. After each infection, all the test disks were inspected to ascertain damage to data, system and program files as well as to separate disk sectors. The research established that: The damage done by computer viruses to stored information is generally limited to one file or disk area. Where damage to stored information did occur, it was often reversible. Irrational user responses to virus symptoms provide a large potential source for damage to stored information. The availability of master program disks (for program file restoration) and recent, validated data backup is essential to recovery from a computer virus infection. A user can solve most problems caused by virus infections if he has a basic understanding of disk structure, i.e. tracks, sectors, sides, the FAT, etc, and of the use of disk utility programs like Norton Utilities or PCTools. The fact that some of the findings of prominent virus researchers could not be verified, suggests that virus programs could be unstable. Claims regarding the damage inflicted by viruses must be considered to be valid only for a specific copy of the virus under discussion. The importance of using original application software (to minimize the transfer of viruses and to enable program file restoration) , regular back-ups (to enable data file restoration) and basic user awareness (infection prevention, symptoms, the use of anti-viral and utility programs, etc.) was emphasized. The average PC user should be able to clear up a virus infection without assistance by following the given disinfection procedure. Suggestions for further study include virus origins, generations, mutations, multiple infections, and the effect of viruses on computer networks.

The following research aims to address the image of the ordinary person in the films of the Pontos de Cultura (Culture Points) in Natal-RN. About ten years the Federal Government of Brazil created the Cultura Viva (Living Culture) program. It enabled the State to support financially civil society organizations that had developed cultural works in communities across the country. Along with the resources the program developed, in parallel, another action, Cultura Digital (Digital culture), intended to bring the tools of digital technology for people who have never had access to them. As a result of these initiatives were produced short films. These films were characterized by the presence of the image of the ordinary person. The creation of this type of cultural product was benefited by state initiative, however, it was inserted within a historical, political and cultural construction whose research was necessary for this image understood to be understood by its importance: it is the expression of emancipation the ordinary person and not just as a consumer of culture, it identifies them as the protagonists of the society and recognizes their vital role in its organization

The written portion of this thesis work is meant to address and further investigate the visual work created using mediums of print and found video. This artistic research has been interested in examining varying associations with truth, recollection, and evidence. This includes the recollection of public histories and news-media narratives as well as my own history and trauma. Through this work my aim was to create a deconstruction and revolt against how associations are formed, and how to understand imagery as information. This thesis first discusses my relationship to appropriated imagery, then connects and examines it through the addition of poetic elements and events from my own lived experience.

Abstract:
Background: Consulting firms biggest challenge is to provide their clients with their required competence. Since consulting firms are active in a very knowledge-intense market, where the mission of their business is formed around the most efficient use of their human resources. The main goal is to provide their clients with their required competence, and to be able to do that they need to have good insight regarding what sort of competencies that are actually requested, both in short and long term. The market has gone from a fair mix of unqualified and qualified positions, to mostly qualified work positions. This means that the overall competitiveness has risen to a new level, and that means that companies are facing the challenge of wanting to recruit the same individuals. Companies that are active in these knowledge-intense markets need individuals that have the right experience combined with the right education, and that is a challenge.Purpose: The aim of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of how consulting firms work strategically to provide their clients with required competence. Furthermore the study aims to examine how consulting firms make sure that they possess the required competence, today and in the future. Since there’s not a lot of previous research on the subject, this study hopes to open up for further research opportunities.Method: Semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data for the study. Seven informants from seven consulting firms were asked questions about their HR-activities and how they supply their company with competence. The choice of method is based on the purpose of the study, to gain a deeper understanding for consulting firms challenges in their work with supplying competence. Conclusion: The conclusion of this study shows that all of the companies that took part, are working with recruiting, developing and retaining their human resources. The results also show that all of the consulting firms that took part in this study, all have a different approach to the parts of the process of supplying competence. Strategic approach is what is lacking in planning efforts for recruitment, development and retaining personnel. The consulting firms that participated all lack in connecting the HR-activities to reaching their companies main goal, to work in a strategic manner. The results also point to the7importance of competency mapping to be able to work with developing the company through their human resources in an efficient way.

Abstract:
The shift from an industrial-based to a knowledge-based economy has impacted market conditions and created a demand for a talented and skilled workforce in knowledge-intensive industries. This paper investigates what the role of talent is, when firms decide for a location by carrying out two studies. Firstly, an extensive literature review was conducted where three factors of firm location decision were identified as: clustering, soft and hard factors, and personal networks. The role of talent continuously emerged in the literature in regards to the three firm location decision factors and appeared to be intertwined in these. Consequently, these factors and the role of talent were conceptualized in an analytical framework. Thereafter, the analytical framework was applied to the second study when conducting a multiple-case study of three clean-tech firms in Uppsala, Sweden. This was done in order to investigate the role of talent in the firms’ location decision. The findings of the multiple-case study revealed that the role of talent was important during the location decision of all three firms where talent was intertwined with the identified location factors. Thus, the multiple-case study confirms that the role of talent impacts firm location decision through being intertwined in the identified firm location decision factors.

Abstract:
Personal files are increasingly in evidence and on the agenda for discussion between scholars and professionals in the area of archives. Contributing to the discussion on growth, introducing the defense of a search method with personal files, reasoned and demonstrated from research instrument developed in parallel: The Inventory of chronological file of Epifânio Dória. Son of landowners, Epifânio da Fonseca Dória e Menezes was born in the year of 1884, in Campos (Sergipe). The holder of the file participated in the formation of virtually all study centers, archives, libraries, magazines and institutions dedicated to the humanities in the State of Sergipe. He devoted himself diligently to organize files by six decades gathering documents, gaining resources and acquiring funds. Representative Figure in Sergipe by its contribution to guard, preservation of historical documents and personal files of State of Segipe personalities, studious also by tireless historical research developed over the course of his life. Dead in 1976, Epifânio Dória left us a precious records, which makes a very rich period of the Brazil history, marked by events and transitions, which have for the researcher countless possibilities of research in various areas of knowledge. The file of Epifânio Dória has 35,193 documents, being distributed, and consequently fragmented, in three important institutions sergipanas, namely: Historical and Geographic Institute of Sergipe (IHGSE), Public Archives of the State of Sergipe (APES) and Public State Library Epiphanius Doria (BPED). Although physically fragmented, it is a file intact, preserved by the family and, subsequently, by the institutions of custody that the received. Contact, knowing and working with the documentation gathered by an important intellectual, historian and librarian from Sergipe were was our task. We offer with the work presented a new approach to personal files. In this proposal the classification assumes the closest level to the documents, classified one by one, being prioritized the micro scale and taking into account the specificities of the life trajectory of the holder of the file. In this sense, the record sheets created are the elements of classification that give a sense more immediately to documents. This way, we build a chronological inventory, performing, from this survey instrument, a comprehensive dialog between the documentation produced and accumulated by its holder and their life trajectory. Understanding dialog is not as a historical interpretation, but as the construction of a bridge between the document and the activity/event that you gave rise. The file of Epifânio Dória spurred us on practical problems and theoretical complex, but, on the other hand, offered us the chance to discuss them, seeking solutions and proposals in the development of the research. The thesis presented provides new nuances the methodology archives in order to substantiate the organization, description and contextualization of personal documents, without violating the principles of the area, and further, on the basis of the documentation, the own biography of Epifânio Dória.

Abstract:
The research on Ingmar Bergman is comprehensive, however, there is one aspect of his artistry that has been regrettably neglected – his use of music. Music always played a huge part in Bergman’s life, and it was also a great source of inspiration. The music was a structural component in the creating process and he often referred to his films as pieces of music and his actors as musical instruments. Moreover, music frequently played a thematic part in the plot. The purpose of this essay is to examine what function music actually has in a selection of Bergman’s films. To do this I have closely analyzed sequences in which music is performed in four different films from the sixties; Through a Glass Darkly (1961), The Silence (1963), Persona (1966) and Hour of the Wolf (1968). The basis of the discussion lies in the film sound research, mainly that of Claudia Gorbman and Royal S. Brown. The conclusion of this analysis is that Bergman’s use of music is quite extraordinary, particularly in creating a certain feeling of time and space differentiated from the rest of the story. The music has an apparent intrinsic value of its own, and consequently, it is a narrative instrument in itself.

The topic of this diploma thesis is a form of own personal space which is confronted with scene visuality used in film industry. It is about linking an existing and fictive (illusionary) environment. I can see the cinematographic space as an image of its physical equivalent. I do search for scenes in existing movies, which are charting the interiors of environments, where the movie is being set. I do use the camera moves and the ways of seeing the immediate surroundings as they are used in those scenes and I repeat them in my own private apartment. Screenplay structure comes from my apartment dispositions. The final dual channel video leads the spectactor through two levels of space in the same time.

Abstract:
This thesis will analyse the ways in which fan participation and creation in online communities extends the film world beyond the film object, and the extent to which fandom influences identity within the fan group. The study will seek to determine the ways in which fans become part of the franchise through online engagement, as well as the manner in which they appropriate the franchise identity through their creations. The central hypothesis of the study is that online participation and creation amplifies fan connection with the film franchise, and increases the sense of identification with the world and characters of the films. By being or becoming fans, and engaging with other fans in online and real spaces, they are joining a larger community of people who seem to have blurred the lines between fiction and reality by engaging in a fictional, virtual space as a source of real personal entertainment, based on an anchor media product. This appropriation is enabled through digital communities which expand and extend the reach of fan interaction and further develop the identity of the individual as ‘fan’. Thus, the study will reflect on the implications of fan engagement with the film franchise in the digital space.

Abstract: The following pages consist in a historical ethnography of the Hollywood eye. In particular, it describes the sedimentation of the screen persona of Humphrey Bogart (1899- 1957) in the first half of the 1940s. The analytical focus is twofold: on the one hand, pays attention to the gender relations inscribed in his performances; on the other, seeks to relate his social trajectory and Hollywood's industrial structure of production. A discontinuity goes between an artist's interpretation in front of the camera and his/her correspondent projected image on the screen: the work of numerous other professionals (screenwriter, sound technician, editor etc.) completes the process until the film release, when it is evaluated by public and critic. In cinema, the artistic performance is submited to the camera, that executes the mediation of the entire process; to the technical apparatus corresponds the screen persona, that does not resume itself to the interpreter nor his/her characters: at the same time that unites these - outlining a model of gender - it also supplies to the former the social setting in the structure of production. The Bogart case offers a circumscribed picture because his persona emerged in a linear form in half a decade (after years of investment), when Hollywood organized itself through a mode of production called studio system, where each studio developed its own style and controlled the entire industrial production of a film, from screenplay to exhibition - and therefore the relative autonomy of the artist was very narrow. Through a series of clues collected from various sources (films, literature, biographies, historiography), this dissertation argues that social experience and visual culture are inseparable, defends that Bogart's persona (a canonical symbol of masculinity) was nourished by the dramatic tension between the apparent indifference and the sudden vulnerability, and finally demonstrates that the relation between Bogart and his persona was characterized by otherness
