Abstract:
As we move into the new millennium, computers will increasingly become part of the human culture. As such, computers will continue to effect families, and there will undoubtedly be a proliferation of computer usage across family types. Because computers will be an integral part of change in the next millennium, it is important to examine their potential impact on the basic unit of society- the family. This study, descriptive in nature, provides insight on families and their interactions as related to computer use in their homes. Better understanding of computers and family life can help provide the basis for a smoother transition for families into the expanding world of information technology. As the expansion of the digital age proceeds, its impact on family life would seem to warrant investigation. Information on who is using computers in the home, how those computers are being used, and how time is spent on computers can add to our appreciation of the impact of computer technology. In addition, the perceived impact of computers needs to be assessed in relation to outcomes for family life- interaction, relationships, and familial organization.

Universal acceptance of the Windows NT operating system has made utilization of the personal computer (PC) platform for critical space operations a reality. The software attributes of the operating system allow PC products to attain the reliability necessary for secure control of on-orbit assets. Not only is the software more reliable, it supports better networking interfaces at higher speeds. The software upgrades that the Microsoft Corporation generates on a regular basis allow PCs to offer capabilities previously available only with UNIX-based solutions. As technology matures, PCs will operate faster, offer more graphical user interfaces, and give customers a lower cost versus performance choice. These reasons, and others to be discussed further, clearly demonstrate that PCs will soon take their place at the forefront of mission-critical ground station applications.

Charpentier, Arnaud. "Active Control Of Noise Radiated From Personal Computers." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/35711.

Full text
Abstract:
As an indirect consequence of increased heat cooling requirements, personal computers (PC) have become noisier due to the increased use of fans. Hard disk drives also contribute to the annoying noise radiated by personal computers, creating a need for the control of computer noise. Due to size constraints, the implementation of passive noise control techniques in PC is difficult. Alternatively, active noise control (ANC) may provide a compact solution to the noise problems discussed above, which is the subject of this work. First, the computer noise sources were characterized. The structure-borne path was altered passively through the decoupling of the vibrating sources from the chassis. Global noise control strategy was then investigated with a hybrid passive/active noise control technique based on folded lined ducts, integrating microphones and speakers, that were added to the PC air inlet and outlet. While the ducts were effective above 1000Hz, the use of a MIMO adaptive feedforward digital controller lead to significant noise reduction at the ducts outlets below 1000Hz. However, global performance was limited due to important airborne flanking paths. Finally, the same type of controller was used to create a zone of quiet around the PC user head location. It was implemented using multimedia speakers and microphones, while the computer was placed in a semi-reverberant environment. A large zone of quiet surrounding the head was created at low frequencies (250Hz), and its size would reduce with increasing frequency (up to 1000Hz).

Abstract:
The present Dissertation aims to provide more dynamism to the teaching and learning process in power system engineering through a set of interactive personal computer algorithms. The student may carry out a continuous process of experimenting, questioning and revision of concepts. In order to better develop the leaining process, a frindly environment is created where the user has his actions supported by explanatory and error monitoring messages. This results in a reduction of the time spent in each study section and, consequently, it estimulates the student to perform a greater number of simulations. Four computer programs have been developed. There is one written in PASCAL language, responsible for the following studies: load flow, slort-circuit and transient stability. These programs use special sparsity techniques and programming. Three power systems have been choosen to be immediately available to the user. One of them is used in the text during the explanation process of the conversational structure of the power system studies.

Gleeson, William Joseph. "Computer-based decision-making: The impact of personal computers and distributed databases on managers' performance." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185309.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was a field experiment to test the influence of two different computer conditions on decision-making in an organizational setting. The experiment was carried out in ten mid-sized corporations. The 117 subjects contained about equal numbers of managers and non-managers. The computer conditions tested were (1) a personal computer used with a distributed data base and (2) the traditional mainframe with a central data base supplying information by printouts. The experimental problem was identical in both conditions as was the data in the data base. An additional part of the experiment was to vary the amount of information provided. Half the Subjects in both test conditions had only half the information available to them that the other half of the Subjects had. The results indicated that personal computers were more efficient by enabling Subjects to reach decisions faster. PCs did not produce better outcomes overall. Managers performed best using the traditional printouts. Their performance declined in effectiveness (but not in efficiency) when using a PC. With non-managers the reverse applied. Non-managers performed best when using a PC if they were computer literate. In fact, computer literate non-managers with PCs performed better than managers in either test condition whether the managers were computer literate or not. The level of information available is important. More information leads to better decisions. The implications of the results for management are that (1) more training in the use of computers will produce better outcomes in decision-making; (2) PCs can improve productivity by achieving better effectiveness through better decision outcomes and do so more efficiently by taking less time. Non-managers using PCs can make managerial decisions as well as managers can if the non-managers have computer literacy training. This tends to support the view that managers can be de-skilled by the arrival of PCs in the workplace.

At the heart of this thesis is a desire to understand the evolving and situated relationship between humans and computers. Looking to a specific kind of computer at a specific moment in history, I analyze the ways in which advertising played a role in socially constructing an individual's relationship to the personal computer in the home. Based an analysis of over 500 advertisements in widely circulated magazines during 1984-1987, this thesis examines through emblematic examples how advertisements during this period positioned the personal computer as a domestic machine. In observing the means of socially constructing the personal computer in the mid -1980s, we come to understand the role and potential implications of advertising in socially constructing meaning, as well as gain a deep perspective on how the personal computer was constituted in the early years of its introduction into the home. Taken together, these advertisements present a portrait of a technology's evolution and begin to reveal how personal computers took on the meaning and place that they now occupy in contemporary life. Once embodiments of military and corporate de-humanizing control, computers are now accepted as evocative, social extensions of individual selves that represent individual freedom and power. With personal computers as our contemporary companions, at home, at work and in our laps, this thesis tells a history of how our relationship began.

Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes the personal computer's (PC) domestication during the 1970s and 1980s in the U. S. I argue that in adopting the PC Americans debated and asserted ideas of technology, race, family, and gender. Revising previous explanations that situated the home computer as the natural development of mainframe machines, This dissertation argues that the device emerged from American amateur electronics culture. Furthermore, the new discourses of the personal computer centered the home as its material center that inflected and challenged the PC's other environments, such as schools, public entertainment venues, and civil institutions. While journalistic accounts of personal computing have relied on technical details and hagiography, I uncover the computer's impact on the family circle through analysis of films, newspaper articles, marketing materials, and hobbyist literature. This dissertation reads "against the grain" to recover the voices of makers and users outside the dominant culture and to understand how the home computers' emergence contributed to their marginalization. in doing so, it portrays the computer less as a force for social liberation and more as a reactionary and conservative force used to curtail and reverse 1960s civil and political flux. in short, it finds discourses around personal computers contested and fostered 1.) assertions of its technology as particularly suited for a patriarchal heteronormative family; 2.) parental worries about creativity and education that perpetuated racial inequalities in schools and 3.) threats to masculinity in public entertainment venues, such as the arcade.

Abstract:
The feeling of ownership is a topic of research that has not been addressed as a component in the integration of technology in the K-12 classroom. The effectiveness of this abstract concept in relationship to digital computing is important in the evaluation of one-to-one initiatives in education. This paper reports findings of a research study conducted using a new ownership survey instrument I developed, the Laptop Usage Inventory (LUI). Also administered during the study was the Student Attitude Survey given in a pretest/posttest design. The instruments were administered to seventh and eighth grade students in a north Texas middle school in the 2007-2008 school year. The methodology used to evaluate the Laptop Usage Inventory consisted of Cronbach's alpha and various scaling methods. LUI scale scores were correlated with the results of the Student Attitude Survey to compare students' attitudes toward school before and after using a laptop computer for the school year. Implications for laptop initiatives and for the classroom are discussed and a future research agenda is presented.

Bussone, Adrian. "Reflection and personal health informatics for people living with HIV." Thesis, City, University of London, 2018. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/20935/.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent advances in medicine mean that millions of people who are living with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) can expect to live normal life spans. However, HIV, the medication prescribed to control the virus, and living with a stigmatized disease, are each associated with a wide array of negative impacts on the body and mind, and these present a challenge in an individual’s ability to self-manage their health information. A key aspect of self-management is self-understanding, and Personal Health Informatics (PHI) has the potential to help those living with HIV in understanding their health through reflection. However, there is little indication of the needs of people living with HIV and how PHI systems can best support them in reflecting on their health information. In order to fill this gap, this thesis aims to answer the overall research question: How can Personal Health Informatics systems support people living with HIV in reflecting on their personal health information? Answering this research question was approached in four parts: • The development of a synthesized model of the process of PHI, as means of understanding the context of PHI. • Interviews with HIV+ individuals were conducted to understand where there were opportunities for supporting reflection. • An analysis of an online forum was conducted to determine what people living with HIV were trying to reflect upon, what health information was being asked about, and how the community attempts to support them in reflecting on their health. • Two visual prototypes were designed to simulate community-aided reflection and support people living with HIV in reflecting on their personal health information. These were used during a user study to understand how reflection occurred. My research is the first to explore how to support HIV+ people in reflecting on their personal health information. The main contribution of this research is a detailed understanding of how PHI systems can support people living with HIV in reflecting on their health information. This main contribution is comprised of four smaller ones: • A six-stage process model of Personal Health Informatics • A detailed understanding of how people living with HIV currently track and reflect on their personal health information, and design implications for PHI systems to support them in reflection • An empirical understanding of community-aided reflection as it occurs in an online forum, alongside the identification of five common questions that people living with HIV seek help in online forums for reflecting upon, the information asked about, and how the community attempts to address the questions • A detailed depiction of how reflection occurs when using a prototype designed to simulate community-aided reflection.

Abstract:
The aim of this research was to investigate and evaluate how computerised assessment could be progressed using current advances in technology (1993-1996) such as the increased computing power and storage capacity, and multimedia capabilities. This research would be conducted with respect to a typical chemistry degree course. After a detailed literature survey it was concluded that the major computerised assessment technique was the multiple-choice format or a hybrid of it. A typical degree course was analysed in order to determine the learning outcomes and if these could be assessed by computerisation. Of the assessment methods used in a degree course, it was found that 57% of these could be computerised to some extent. These assessment methods were found to be objective in nature. This research focused on investigating the feasibility of producing computerised assessment methods that in effect used the computer as an electronic notepad and an on-line tutor. Students would be able to input each step of their solution to a problem. The student would be assessed on that step of their solution and not only on the end answer. It was found that computerised assessment could be extended beyond the multiplechoice format to assessing students' process skills in problem solving. Students can input each stage of their solution to a problem and receive feedback in real-time as to whether or not their methodology is correct. Several areas have been investigated: practical chemistry, in particular apparatus assembly; physical chemistry, mathematical problem solving; organic chemistry, reaction mechanisms; chemical information and retrieval. During these investigations several prototypes of the applications were developed. These prototypes were developed using Visual Basic 3.0 Professional for Windows 3.1. These prototypes serve as the data that support this research.

Aldeco, Perez Rocio. "Secure provenance-based auditing of personal data use." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2012. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/340065/.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years, an increasing number of personalised services that require users to disclose personal information have appeared on the Web (e.g. social networks, governmental sites, on-line selling sites). By disclosing their personal information, users are given access to a wide range of new functionality and benefits. However, there exists a risk that their personal information is misused. To strike a balance between the advantages of personal information disclosure and protection of information, governments have created legal frameworks, such as the Data Protection Act, Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA) or Safe Harbor, which place restrictions on how organisations can process personal information. By auditing the way in which organisations used personal data, it is possible to determine whether they process personal information in accordance with the appropriate frameworks. The traditional way of auditing collects evidence in a manual way. This evidence is later analysed to assess the degree of compliance to a predefined legal framework. These manual assessments are long, since large amounts of data need to be analysed, and they are unreliable, since there is no guarantee that all data is correctly analysed. As several cases of data leaks and exposures of private data have proven, traditional audits are also prone to intentional and unintentional errors derived from human intervention. Therefore, this thesis proposes a provenance-based approach to auditing the use of personal information by securely gathering and analysing electronic evidence related to the processing of personal information. This approach makes three contributions to the state of art. The first contribution is the Provenance-based Auditing Architecture that defies a set of communication protocols to make existing systems provenance-aware. These protocols specify which provenance information should be gathered to verify the compliance with the Data Protection Act. Moreover, we derive a set of Auditing Requirements by analysing a Data Protection Act case study and demonstrate that provenance can be used as electronic evidence of past processing. The second contribution is the Compliance Framework, which is a provenance-based auditing framework for automatically auditing the compliance with the Data Protection Act's principles. This framework consist of a provenance graph representation (Processing View), a novel graph-based rule representation expressing processing rules (Usage Rules Definition) and a novel set of algorithms that automatically verify whether information was processed according to the Auditing Requirements by comparing the Processing View against the Usage Rules Definition. The third contribution is the Secure Provenance-based Auditing Architecture that ensures any malicious alteration on provenance during the entire provenance life cycle of recording, storage, querying and analysis can be detected. This architecture, which relies on cryptographic techniques, guarantees the correctness of the audit results

Alanazi, Sultan. "Improving end-system recommender systems using cross-platform personal information." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2017. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/44864/.

Abstract:
Today, the web is constantly growing, expanding global information space and more and more data is being processed and sourced online. The amount of electronically accessible and available online information is overwhelming. Increasingly, recommendation systems, which engage in some form of automated personalisation, are hugely prevalent on the web and have been extensively studied in the research literature. Several issues still remain unsolved including high sparsity situation and cold starts (how to recommend content to users who have had little or no prior interaction with the system). Recent work has demonstrated a potential solution in the form of cross-domain user modeling. This thesis will explore the design, implementation and testing of a cross-domain approach using social media data to model rich and effective user preferences and provide empirical evidence of the effectiveness of the approach based on direct real-world user feedback, deconstructing a cross-system news recommendation service where user models are generated via social media data. This will be accomplished by identifying the availability of a source domain from which to draw resources for recommendations and the availability of user profiles that capture a wide range of user interests from different domains. This thesis also demonstrates the viability of generating user models from social media data and evidences that the automated cross-domain approach can be superior to explicit filtering using self-declared preferences and can be further augmented when placing the user with the ability to maintain control over such models. The reasons for these results are qualitatively examined in order to understand why such effects occur, indicating that different models are capturing widely different areas within a user's preference space.

Abstract:
As handheld computers are becoming powerful, portable and wireless, they have recently received considerable attention in education because their multi-functionality and mobility can be used for supporting learning activities in various manner. In spite of the potential in education, handheld computers have several limitations. One of the critical limitations is the small screen size. In an attempt to find factors affecting text readability on the small screen of handheld computers, this study, first, reviewed basic reading process and reading model, previous studies examining potential factors affecting text readability on a small handheld screen. This study investigated the effect of screen orientation and margin on reading performance (reading speed and comprehension) and subjective impressions (ease of reading, mental workload and satisfaction) with a handheld computer. A 2x2 within-subject factorial design was conducted with 16 participants reading texts from a PDA (Compaq iPAQ 3850). The results of this study indicated that neither screen orientation nor margin had a significant influence on objective reading performance and subjective impression. It was found that there were no prevailing preference of screen orientation and margin in reading texts from a handheld computer screen. It was also found that participants had a favorable reading experience with the handheld computers. Based on results of experiments and post-experiment questionnaire, a set of recommendations was developed to improve reading from small screens of handheld computers.

Touchscreen technology is gradually becoming more popular and massive in our present society to the point where it is hard to find a person that has never used this interface system. Handheld devices such as mobile phones and tablets are predominantly based on touchscreens as the main way to interact with them. Nevertheless, that is not the case when it comes to personal computers either desktop machines or laptops which are still chiefly based on traditional keyboard and mouse as their main input system. In this study we explore the potential that touchscreen based interface can offer for personal computers carrying through an observational experiment with six participants that were asked to perform a list of tasks using both traditional keyboard-mouse interface and touchscreen interface. The measurements during the observation concerned time and error rate for every task. Each participant was interviewed right after the completion of the observational phase in order to get a qualitative insight on their views and perceptions regarding both interfaces. The data collected was analyzed based on some existing models within touchscreen interface and human-computer interaction that have been elaborated in previews research. The final results led to the conclusion, that touchscreen-based interface proved to be slower and have higher error rate than traditional interface in a big number of the tasks performed by the participants. Similarly, the general perception of the people towards having touchscreen on a personal computer still seems a bit doubtful, although they do see some concrete positive aspects about this interface. Nevertheless, touchscreen outperformed traditional interface in some particular tasks. This implies that touchscreen interface has a clear potential for personal computers that would let users utilize these machines in a much broader and more interactive way than people do it today with the traditional keyboard-mouse interface.

Commoditization of the PC market has led to a shift in strategy at Dell away from customization towards defining specific consumer configurations ahead of time. This shift creates new planning and decision processes around which configurations to select. Given configurations are defined before true demand can be measured, variability leads to selection of configurations based on imperfect knowledge. The existing variety of configurations has imposed substantial complexity costs on Dell. Modeling this selection process as a Newsvendor "life-time buy" includes this variability while optimizing for profit. Estimated costs of overage, costs of underage, and complexity costs are used as inputs. This thesis seeks to develop a framework informing configuration selection decisions based on demand variability and expected profit. A heuristic model uses configuration volume estimates, profit margin estimates, and historical regional bias in submitted forecasts to score and rank potential configurations. This heuristic determines which configurations to select within a fixed maximum total number of configurations limit, based on the business's market share growth and profit goals. This maximum limit is set by Dell's Vice Chairman Jeff Clarke. The results of this heuristic show a decrease in decision process time, an increase in process transparency, and increase in expected profit. A what-if scenario analysis shows an annual increase of 3.4% in profit which amounts to several million dollars. These results were gathered through implementing the model in November 2014 and comparing the heuristic-based decisions against past process decisions.

Vural, Gurkan. "Anomaly Detection From Personal Usage Patterns In Web Applications." Master's thesis, METU, 2006. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12607973/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The anomaly detection task is to recognize the presence of an unusual (and potentially hazardous) state within the behaviors or activities of a computer user, system, or network with respect to some model of normal behavior which may be either hard-coded or learned from observation. An anomaly detection agent faces many learning problems including learning from streams of temporal data, learning from instances of a single class, and adaptation to a dynamically changing concept. The domain is complicated by considerations of the trusted insider problem (recognizing the difference between innocuous and malicious behavior changes on the part of a trusted user). This study introduces the anomaly detection in web applications and formulates it as a machine learning task on temporal sequence data. In this study the goal is to develop a model or profile of normal working state of web application user and to detect anomalous conditions as deviations from the expected behavior patterns. We focus, here, on learning models of normality at the user behavioral level, as observed through a web application. In this study we introduce some sensors intended to function as a focus of attention unit at the lowest level of a classification hierarchy using Finite State Markov Chains and Hidden Markov Models and discuss the success of these sensors.

Abstract:
This research study had three aims. The first aim was to identify if any changes in job characteristics and the motivating potential of jobs occurred when workers were provided with their own personal desktop computers for accessing automated integrated information management systems, wordprocessing and spreadsheeting facilities. The second aim of the study was to determine if any changes in job satisfaction occurred as a result of such changes in job characteristics and the motivating potential of jobs. The third aim of the study was to determine whether changes in job satisfaction that resulted from changes in job characteristics and changes in the motivating potential of jobs were moderated by the following factors: workers' perceptions of the impact of the new technology on their work practices, workers' prior knowledge of computing, and workers' age, gender and job category. A survey questionnaire was used to collect information for this research study. The complete version of the Job Diagnostic Survey formed the major portion of this questionnaire. The additional portions of the questionnaire were designed to collect information relating to workers' perceptions of the impact of the new technology, their prior computing knowledge and their age, gender and job category. A quasi-experimental multiple time-series research design was used to fulfill the aims of this study. The experimental group comprised 19 workers who had been using the new technology for no longer than five months. In order to maximise discrimination between effects that resulted from the introduction of the new technology and effects that resulted from other organisational factors, two control groups were used in this research study. The "established users" group comprised 10 workers who had been using the new technology in their jobs for at least six months, and the "non-users" group comprised 22 workers who had not used the new technology in their jobs and would not do so for the duration of the study. A period of 18 months elapsed between the pretest and the posttest. In total, 51 respondents completed both the pretest and posttest questionnaires. These respondents' results were analysed using Statview 512+ and JMP (version 2). The participants of this research study were all employees of the National Library of Australia (NLA). Although computer technology has been in use at the NLA since the 1980s, the new technology that has been the focus of this research study differs from previous technology because it provides staff of the NLA with instant access to an information system that is both fully automated and fully integrated. This has been achieved in two ways. Firstly, the development of a local area network, the installation of a Dynix Integrated Library Management System, and the provision of Epsom personal computers equipped with Word for Windows and Excel for Windows have collectively made it possible for staff of the NLA now to access all the NLA's existing and new automated systems from a single personal computer instead of having to use different equipment for different automated tasks as has previously been the case. Secondly, rather than having to share equipment with other staff, each staff member has been supplied with their own PC. The study found that the introduction of the new technology did not have any significant effects on job characteristics and the motivating potential of jobs. However, there was a significant decrease in job satisfaction after the introduction of the new technology. It was found that workers had very positive perceptions of the effects of the technology on their jobs, and very high levels of prior computing knowledge, and therefore it was concluded that these factors did not have any moderating effects on the relationship between the introduction of the new technology and job satisfaction. No relationships were found between the decrease in job satisfaction and workers' age, gender and job category. Results of further analysis, however, reveal that there was a relationship between the decrease in job satisfaction after the introduction of the new technology and two other factors. These were a reduction in workers' perceptions of the value of the skills required to complete their work tasks and a decrease in their social satisfaction. Further research is suggested in order to determine the general applicability of these results to other organisations and other occupational groups.

Abstract:
The social impacts of new information technology have attracted much attention in recent years. This study looked at the personal computer's impact on the public library's services and functions. Particular attention was paid to the public access personal computer. The method involved a Baseline survey to establish the availability and use of public access personal computers in Australian public libraries and a Delphi survey to consider possible futures. The researcher's framework was drawn from reviews of the literatures on futures research; new information technology and its social impacts; the development and current situation of the public library; and innovation research. The Baseline survey revealed that public access personal computers were becoming increasingly common in public libraries, though their provision was not yet widespread. Existing and planned uses included games, literacy and various other educational activities. Overall the public access personal computer was viewed as a favourable innovation with the part it could play in developing community computer literacy receiving particular attention. The Delphi panel was comprised of 25 public librarians selected on the basis of their knowledge about computers in public libraries. The 41 Event Statements postulated a wide range of changes in - (1) the nature and method of service provision; (2) the patterns of client demand and use; and, (3) financial allocations. The results revealed greater variability of opinion about the likely time of occurrence of the Events than about their desirability. A high level of opinion change between the two Rounds did not produce much movement toward consensus - indicating that the panel had varied views of the future. Comment on both surveys indicated that the librarians were keen to develop services relevant to their communities and if public access personal computers were such a service they would strive to provide them. The Delphi survey proved a good vehicle for encouraging consideration of the future and further research using the method seems warranted.

Personal computers are easy to program, inexpensive and portable. With two Commodore 64 computers, I created an artistic installation entitled "Songs in the Language of Information". It was composed of elements reflecting time, space, light, action and predictability. The two computers controlled projected light patterns, complementary synthesized sound and interactive relays triggered by viewers crossing light beams. The following thesis documents "Songs in the Language of Information". The "Introduction" presents background development leading up to this work. All components of the installation are discussed in "Physical Description" and "Analysis of the Work". A survey of selected recent and past work that has been influential to me is outlined in "Historical Precedents". "The Program" illustrates graphic elements, presents flow charts and lists programs of all subroutines used in the installation. The "Conclusion" offers what for me is the next step in my artistic work with computers.

Datta, Diptish. "Interfacing the IBM PC with the STD bus for multiprocessing." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/45647.

Full text
Abstract:

The advent of the Personal Computer into the technical world has, at an extremely reasonable expense and trouble, made available to us, considerable computational power. But, as it was with computers, the next logical step is to have multiple units running in concert, or, in other words, sharing the load. This leads to the concept of Multiprocessing in order to attain an enhancement in operation speed and superior efficiency. The IBM PC is a versatile and market proven personal computer with a very large volume of software support and the STD Bus is a standard that has been developed to cope with a variable support, i.e. different processors and different I/O capabilities. Together, they combine the user interface - the display and keyboard · of the PC, the processing capabilities of the PC, the I/O capabilities of the STD Bus and the support processing possible on the STD Bus. The resulting system is powerful, easy to use and it has a lot of scope for development.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.Eng.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 1999.

A Digital Persona (DP) is a gateway to a set of personal information, such as phone numbers and email addresses. Applications and devices which use personal information, such as electronic calendars and cellular phones, can manage this information by using a DP. Information which is accessible through a DP can be stored in the DP itself or in other applications. Since a DP facilitates the transfer of information between devices and applications, a DP can help solve many information management problems, such as handling data with different internal representations. The DP's structured, yet flexible, object model allows di-verse devices and applications to access and update information without being forced to adopt a common object model. This thesis discusses the design of the DP object model and API, as well as the DP's implementation. Implementation details which are covered include object-oriented techniques, reflection, and interfaces.
