Abstract:
With the goal to create personal and musical agency in choral conductors, this chapter discusses the application of constructivist principles to choral pedagogy and the teaching of an undergraduate conducting class. In addition to teaching the requisite conducting skills, reflective practice, meaning making, and problem solving were included to foster habits of mind to prepare students to eventually conduct their own ensembles. Undergraduate students in their first conducting class provided the data, which included reflective journals, in class feedback, along with the teacher’s reflective memos. The chapter describes how conducting students navigated the challenges that called upon their previous experiences as ensemble members and their prior musical knowledge. In the end, conducting students expressed feelings of confidence and empowerment that suggested they had achieved both musical and personal agency.

Abstract:
Even the best moral principles for patient care and psychiatric ethics are likely to be misapplied or stumble in clinical practice, without sound and sensible recognition of how to understand the concepts of a patient’s personal identity and self-responsible or reflective agency. In this chapter I sketch an account of how personal identity and self-responsible agentive capacity are best described for understanding mental illness and in clinical practice. The account aims to be true to the subjective experience of reflective personhood and self-responsible agency as well as to the perspective of the mental health care clinician. Special attention is given to certain background moral principles that help to clinically frame the importance of patient identity and agency.

Abstract:
This chapter aims to address two related challenges the phenomenon of depression raises for theories which present autonomy as an agency concept and an independent source of justification. The first challenge is directed at an intuitive conception of intentional agency as implying a robust though not always direct link between evaluation and motivation, for in depression what appears to be choice-worthy does not get chosen. The second challenge targets the feasibility of a reliable distinction between autonomous and non-autonomous choices, for both value-neutral and value-laden accounts of depressive agency seem open to decisive objections. Drawing on Freud's interpretation of melancholia and Korsgaard's notion of practical identity, the chapter develops a conception of paradoxical identification which helps address the two challenges described and supports a revised value-neutral account of depressive agency as being non-autonomous.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the role of race in the transformation of the former German enemy into an American friend that took place in the Rhineland occupation zone between 1918 and 1923. It proposes that in the crucible of the occupation zone, dissimilar and heightened American and German understandings and practices of race converged with usual postwar indignities of brutality, revenge, and survival. What emerged was a transformed global pattern of racial perspectives and reconciled alliances. W. E. B. Du Bois named this reorganization of racial discourse “the discovery of personal whiteness among the world's peoples.” The chapter proposes that another stream of interactions bound Germans and Americans together: they grappled with their perceptions of interior “racialized” enemies, deepened their crafting of white supremacy, and expressed similar interior visions while at work on their world visions.
