Full textIn this dissertation I analyze the theme of Penelope from the point of view of comparative literature, in the light of a selection of recent criticism, and with the aim of writing a short series of critical essays that are shaped in various sizes and show a different composition. Starting from Homer's and then Ovid's text of this ancient female mythological character, I thus investigate a choice of poetic and narrative works which renew her figure, by also recreating her motives, within the domain of Western literature of the twentieth and twenty-first century – particularly English literature.

Full textThis thesis examines the origin of Giovan Ambrogio Marini’s Calloandro in Genoa’s rich and dynamic social and cultural context of the first half of the XVII century. Introductory pages to the novel’s various editions represent an important contribution about the novel’s developement in Italy, where the success of the genre wasn’t followed by a theoric and systemic study. After a research on the sources concerning the author’s biography and literary production, the first chapter presents a detailed synthesis of the novel’s plot which fixes some fundamental elements of this kind of work. The second chapter is about the novel’s narrative structure focusing on the techniques of the plot’s building. Then the third chapter describes literary models which influenced Marini’s work, in particular the Greek novels of Hellenism and the comic tradition. The fourth chapter analyses the characters' system: there are some subtle and unforeseeable characters, among many generic and insubstantial figures, that make Calloandro a unpredictable novel in which the psychological realism, typical of Ligurian novels, is combined with the taste of adventure, typical of the Venetian novels.

Buzzola, Anna Lisa. "Personaggi letterari che tacciono: motivazioni ed efficacia di un espediente narrativo." Doctoral thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/11562/913782.
Full textThis is a study of literary silent characters, in modern and contemporary Western literature. The selected texts are 61 (including novels, short stories and tales), by 43 different authors, from 18 countries mainly in Europe, but also in the US and South America, with some examples from other nations such as Turkey, South Africa, Japan. Standing out from the many essays dealing with the theme of silence or narrative omissions made by the authors, this research focuses totally on silent characters, analyzed in terms of narrative, psychological and relational. The theoretical tools used were therefore those of narratology and literary criticism, including stylistic analysis. To better understand the individual characters, treated almost like real people, we turned also to psychological studies and to the pragmatics of communication. The objective was to compare different ways to keep quiet, classified according to their motivations, distinguishing especially the plans of fiction (that is, the effects that silence produces within the stories) and reality (ie the author’s aims towards readers in portraying a silent character). Keeping in mind these two aspects, the study has also attempted an evaluation of the effectiveness of silence, instrument so suggestive as dangerously ambiguous, from the narrative point of view and in relation to the communication of author’s messages for the reader.
