Abstract:
Business transfers are linked to both the beginning and the end of entrepreneurial processes. A person can become an entrepreneur by acquiring an existing business instead of starting one, and exit from entrepreneurship can occur through selling the business. Business transfers are gradually becoming more common among small businesses, largely due to entrepreneurs’ aging, and thus deserve attention from entrepreneurship scholars. In particular, the issue of why and how business transfer negotiations fail without achieving a transfer has received little research attention. The purpose of this paper is to explore this phenomenon from potential buyers’ and sellers’ perspectives. The findings are based on a sample of 156 responses. The results suggest that the problems occurring in unfinished business transfers are quite numerous and the gaps between the views of the two negotiating parties are wider than in cases where business transfer negotiations are concluded successfully, indicating that the initial negotiation positions can be crucial. This research proposes some key elements to consider when planning an exit by business transfer and highlight the importance of unfinished small business transfers as an essential element of a dynamic business transfer market; a substantial proportion of the potential buyers and sellers are satisfied with the outcome even though the transfer did not occur.

Abstract:
This article examines John Stuart Mill’s influential proposal of how to tax wealth transfers. According to Mill, every person should be free to bequeath but not to receive bequest. Mill proposed an upper limit on how much each person could receive from wealth transfers. We discuss three objections against this proposal. The nonseparability objection holds that it is not possible to separate the freedom to give from the freedom to receive. The objection from private property holds that private property includes an unlimited right to dispose of one’s assets and that this right is violated under Mill’s scheme. The objection from incentives holds that Mill’s scheme would have negative effects on people’s willingness to work and save. We argue that these objections can be met and that taxing bequeathed wealth according to Mill’s scheme is more just and more efficient compared to systems that rely less on wealth transfer taxation.

Abstract:
In this era of globalization, everyone is certainly no stranger to fund transfer activities. Transfer of funds is very helpful in community activities, but with the convenience of the facilities provided by the bank, of course there are risks, such as errors in transferring funds. The purpose of this research is to determine the legal knowledge of banking fund transfers and to discuss the legal consequences of errors in bank fund transfers. This research is a normative legal research supported by primary and secondary legal materials. The data collection technique in this research is to record and document. The data analysis technique is to examine books, literature and electronic media related to this research. The results of the reserach explain that UUTD no. 3 of 2011 in Article 1 point 1 regulates the definition of transfer or transfer of funds, namely an activity of transferring funds of a certain amount by the original sender to the recipient who has been mentioned in the order for the transfer of funds until it is received. And based on Article 1360 of the Civil Code, which states: "Whoever knowingly or not, receives something that does not have to be paid to him, must return it to the person who gave it". So that according to civil law, a person is obliged to return funds that are not his right from the results of an error in transferring funds that occur with a note that the bank must be able to clearly prove that the funds are not intended for the person concerned.

Abstract:
AbstractWe examine how migration is influenced by temperature and precipitation variability, and the extent to which the receipt of a cash transfer affects the use of migration as an adaptation strategy. Climate data is merged with georeferenced panel data (2010–2014) on individual migration collected from the Zambian Child Grant Program (CGP) sites. We use the person-year dataset to identify the direct and heterogeneous causal effects of the CGP on mobility. Having access to cash transfers doubles the rate of male, short-distance moves during cool periods, irrespective of wealth. Receipt of cash transfers (among wealthier households) during extreme heat causes an additional retention of males. Cash transfers positively spur long-distance migration under normal climate conditions in the long term. They also facilitate short-distance responses to climate, but not long-distance responses that might be demanded by future climate change.

Abstract:
Background and aim:If a person does not become ambulant after an amputation, a knee disarticulation (KD) shouldbe considered and the person may then benefit from a cosmetic KD prosthesis. The features of a cosmetic KD prosthesis are, however, seldom described. The aim of this clinical note is to describe the development of a cosmeticKD prosthesis.Technique:A non-ambulant person with bilateral KD formulated, together with her physiatrist, the criteria for a cosmetic KD prosthesis. On the basis of these, a lightweight, natural-looking, well-fitting, easy-to-put-on and take-off KD prosthesis, with no thigh lengthening during sitting, was made. This prosthesis was fixed on a wheelchair and does not impede transfer.Discussion:A newly constructed cosmetic prosthesis for non-ambulant persons with a KD is described in detail. We hope that this will encourage physiatrists and prosthetists to offer non-ambulant persons with a KD a cosmetic prosthesis.Clinical relevanceA cosmetic leg prosthesis with good cosmetic properties, good sitting comfort, and no restrictions in making transfers is described in detail for non-ambulant persons with a knee disarticulation.

Abstract:
Purpose. The aim of this study is to describe the robotic assisted transfer device (RATD) and an initial focus group evaluation by end users. The purpose of the device is to aid in the transfers of people with disabilities to and from their electric powered wheelchair (EPW) onto other surfaces. The device can be used for both stand-pivot transfers and fully dependent transfers, where the person being transferred is in a sling and weight is fully on the robot. The RATD is fixed to an EPW to allow for its use in community settings.Method. A functional prototype of the RATD was designed and fabricated. The prototype was presented to a group of 16 end users and feedback on the device was obtained via a survey and group discussion.Results.Thirteen out of sixteen (83%)participants agreed that it was important to develop this type of technology. They also indicated that user, caregiver, and robotic controls were important features to be included in the device.Conclusions. Participants in this study suggested that they would be accepting the use of robotic technology for transfers and a majority did not feel that they would be embarrassed to use this technology.

Abstract:
The person re-identification (re-ID) problem has attracted growing interest in the computer vision community. Most public re-ID datasets are captured by multiple non-overlapping cameras, and the same person may appear dissimilar in different camera views due to variances of illuminations, viewpoints and postures. These differences, collectively referred to as camera style variance, make person re-ID still a challenging problem. Recently, researchers have attempted to solve this problem using generative models. The generative adversarial network (GAN) is widely used for the pose transfer or data augmentation to bridge the camera style gap. However, these methods, mostly based on image-level GAN, require huge computational power during the training of generative models. Furthermore, the training process of GAN is separated from the re-ID model, which makes it hard to achieve a global optimal for both models simultaneously. In this paper, the authors propose to alleviate camera style variance in the re-ID problem by adopting a feature-level Camera Style Transfer (CST) model, which can serve as an intra-class augmentation method and enhance the model robustness against camera style variance. Specifically, the proposed CST method transfers the camera style-related information of input features while preserving the corresponding identity information. Moreover, the training process can be embedded into the re-ID model in an end-to-end manner, which means the proposed approach can be deployed with much less time and memory cost. The proposed approach is verified on several different person re-ID baselines. Extensive experiments show the validity of the proposed CST model and its benefits for re-ID performance on the Market-1501 dataset.

Abstract:
Court-ordered redistricting in the mid-1960s eradicated severe disparities in the populations of U.S. state legislative districts. We examine the geographic distribution of money by states to counties. Cross-sectional analysis shows that counties with relatively more legislativeseats per person prior to redistricting received relatively more transfers from the state per person. Over time, counties that lost legislative seats subsequently received a smaller share of state funds per capita. We calculate that population equalization significantly altered the flow of state transfers to counties, diverting approximately $7 billion annually from formerly overrepresented to formerly underrepresented counties, an effect missed by past studies. For those concerned with the design of democratic institutions around the world today, the American experience provides clear evidence of the political consequences of unequal representation.

Abstract:
The Alemannic dialects in linguistic islands in Northern Italy have been undergoing strong changes since the second half of the 20th century. One of these changes concerns the assignment of gender with persons. Generalized neuter abolishes the coupling of gender with male/female and transfers both female and male persons into neuter. This in turn has its effect on verbal inflection. The post-verbal subject clitics mutate in the 3rd person singular to verb endings void of male/female connotations. This change, as it is now spreading, is not in itself a recent phenomenon. In early written dialectal records it already occurs in single documents even at the beginning of the 19th century.

Abstract:
The present research focuses on analysing the judicial uncertainty in the implementation, interpretation and application of the ICC Statute both in international and national arenas. In this context examined are the parameters of state sovereignty as the main source of theoretical as well as practical contemporary debate on the relationship between lex specialis character of ICC norms and domestic legal regimes. Varying and frequently inconsistent degrees of international and national compliance with international criminal law due to the multiplicity of legal regimes are scrutinised by analysing the relationship between national and ICC measures with regard to aspects of pretrial proceedings, such as surrender of accused persons and transfer of criminal proceedings, rights of suspects and defendants as well as some aspects of sentencing in so far as they affect the prima facie jurisdiction. One of the main objectives of the ICC Treaty is to advance the unification of international criminal law. Whilst it may be contended that this body of law is acquiring a great degree of specificity and uniformity in content through the Statute, both its development and importantly its scope are fundamentally reliant on interpretation and application at national level; it is here that international criminal law is fragmented. Consequently, its understanding and enforcement are inconsistent. The ICC Statute presents issues that are the result of the fusion of common and civil law traditions as well as a blend of diverse criminal laws within each one of those systems. Distinguishing between Anglo-American and Continental European criminal procedures has become increasingly complex and transgressed. Such blend of legal traditions, whilst it must ensure that justice is rendered with equality, fairness and effectiveness, generates nevertheless everincreasing lack of legal orientation. The aim of this pastiche is therefore to establish an international, uniform standard across contemporary justice systems. However, the application of the ICC provisions will depend on particular method of implementation of the Rome Treaty into domestic law, local political situation, the nature of a conflict (armed conflict is where most of the ICC crimes are likely to occur), any peace process involving regional amnesties and pardons and domestic policies and rules on sentencing. The general perception of the ICC and the law it represents is that of a powerful, centralised regime. Contrary to this belief, a proposition is made here for a less hierarchical international criminal justice that is fundamentally reliant upon national courts and law enforcement agencies. Such a proposition emphasises the need for the ICC involvement at a local level. In this context, the thesis sets out to clarify the ICC law and related Statute enforcement issues.

Mila, Hanna. "Neonatal period in the dog : Immunological and nutritional determinants for survival." Phd thesis, Toulouse, INPT, 2015. http://oatao.univ-toulouse.fr/15972/1/Mila.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Neonatal mortality in dogs (within the first three weeks after birth) accounts on average for 20% of puppies born alive, being thus responsible for a great economic loss to dog breeders. However, immunological and nutritional determinants of puppies survival are poorly described. This dissertation thus investigated the risk factors of neonatal mortality in dogs, and in particular the importance of colostrum intake for survival. The first part of results revealed a strong association between early growth rate (during the first two days of life) and neonatal losses. As early growth rate reflects the colostrum intake, the role of colostrum was then addressed. Passive immune transfer was shown to affect mortality rate, with serum IgG concentration at two days of age lower than 2.3 g/L being characterized as in deficit of maternal immunoglobulins. Similar lack of immunoprotection was observed for a specific canine pathogen (canine parvovirus type 2), as puppies with low antibody titers at two days of age seroconverted or underwent parvovirus infection significantly earlier than puppies with higher titers. Energy intake, evaluated via blood glucose concentration at 24h of life, was also found associated with survival: puppies with low glucose concentration (≤ 92 mg/dl) were found at higher risk of death. Besides the strong relationship between colostrum ingestion, providing passive immunity and energy, the impact of birth weight and vitality at birth (evaluated via Apgar score) on puppies’ survival was also evidenced. Colostrum immune quality (evaluated via IgG concentration), although not directly linked with the risk of neonatal death, was found of great variability, most probably putting some puppies at a risk of passive immune deficit. The present study contributed to the knowledge about the risk factors of mortality to be controlled in breeding kennels. Results provided in this work revealed the crucial role of the fetal growth, course of parturition and intake of the colostrum for the newborn dog. Regular weighing of newborns can be advised as a practical application for dog breeders, as it allows to identify puppies at a higher risk of death and to provide puppies with additional nursing and veterinary care.

Abu, Alghaib Ola. "Impact of the Palestinian National Cash Transfer Programme on persons with disabilities' independent living." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2018. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/67654/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to contribute to current policy and academic debates on the impact of cash transfers, as an essential pillar of social protection policy, on persons with disabilities in low- and middle-income countries. It is one of the first studies to specifically explore cash transfer schemes' potential contribution to persons with disabilities’ independent living, pursuant to Article 19 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. A qualitative country case study approach, with both descriptive and explanatory purposes, was adopted. Multiple lines of evidence were used to examine the Palestinian National Cash Transfer Programme, combining collection and analysis of primary and secondary data through document study, expert interviews, focus group discussions, and in-depth interviews. This thesis draws on the transformative social protection framework, emphasising the aim of enhancing the rights and social status of the marginalised, thereby reducing their economic and social vulnerability. It argues that social protection for persons with disabilities should adopt a ‘transformative’ approach to support equity, social justice, and empowerment. The necessary components of an inclusive social protection policy are suggested, transcending the traditional medical or charitable conceptualisations of persons with disabilities. The thesis highlights the complexity of addressing disability through cash transfer programmes, especially when political, structural, and resource factors are also influential. The main argument is that ad hoc responses to persons with disabilities’ needs in cash transfer programmes are insufficient to deliver a sustainable and positive impact on their wellbeing and independent living. The evidence suggests that policy interventions to address persons with disabilities’ independent living rights must focus on institutional, social, and political structures, rather than just income. Cash transfers are one policy solution to partially enhance persons with disabilities’ autonomy and life choices. However, social protection interventions should extend beyond poverty alleviation social transfers, with broader services than cash. Adopting wide-ranging measures should assure persons with disabilities of equal access to support and mainstream social services, promote their independence, and reduce social exclusion.

Eferemo, Daniel. "Numerical investigation of the convective heat transfer coefficient of the human body using a representative cylindrical model." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/26904.

Full text
Abstract:
The principal objective of this study is to investigate, develop and verify a framework for determining the convective heat transfer co-efficient from a cylindrical model that can easily be adaptable to more complex geometry - more specifically the human body geometry. Analysis of the model under forced convection airflow conditions between the transition velocity of about 1m/s - calculated using the Reynolds number - up until 12m/s were carried out. The boundary condition, however, also included differences in turbulence intensities and cylinder orientation with respect to wind flow (seen as wind direction in some texts). A total of 90 Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) calculations from these variations were analysed for the model under forced convective flow. Similar analysis were carried out for the model under natural convection with air flow velocity of 0.1m/s. Here, the temperature difference between the model and its surrounding environments and the cylinder orientation with respect to wind flow were varied to allow for a total of 15 CFD analysis. From these analysis, for forced convection, strong dependence of the convective heat transfer coefficient on air velocity, cylinder orientation and turbulence intensity was confirmed. For natural convection, a dependence on the cylinder orientation and temperature difference between the model and its environment was confirmed. The results from the CFD simulations were then compared with those found in texts from literature. Formulas for the convective heat transfer coefficient for both forced and natural convection considering the respective dependent variables are also proposed. The resulting formulas and the step by step CFD process described in this thesis provides a framework for the computation of the convective heat transfer coefficient of the human body via computer aided simulations. This framework can easily be adaptable to the convective heat transfer coefficient calculations of the human body with some geometric modelling adjustments, thus resulting in similar representative equations for a human geometric model.

Doctoral thesis, Örebro universitet, Institutionen för hälsovetenskap och medicin, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:oru:diva-45277.

Full text
Abstract:
Individuals who suffer from severe dementia require assistance when performing activities of daily living. The highly important person transfer situation is influenced by complex, intertwined biopsychosocial factors that are related to the expression of personal, environmental and behavioral variables, which can interfere with the performance of dementia-care dyads' transfer situations. The overall aim of this study was to leverage a behavioral medicine perspective in physiotherapy to explore, intervene in, and develop an assessment scale for problematic person transfer situations including persons with dementia and the interaction with the caregiver in these transfer situations. Interviews were performed with ten caregivers who were recruited to two focus groups and worked in a special care unit for persons with dementia; interviewees described their experiences pursuant to assisting persons with dementia in transfer situations (I). Literature review and video recordings elicited 93 possible items for the new scale. Expert opinions and item-content validity index reduced the number of items to 17 that spanned two areas. Eight items related to the actions of persons with dementias, whereas nine related to caregiver actions. The feasibility testing of the scale in eight person transfer situations showed that the scale was ready for inter- and intra-rated reliability testing (II). Inter- and intra- rater reliability was good (III). In two single-case experimental design studies, the new scale was shown to contribute to a substantial gathering of data on behaviors in care dyads' person transfer situations (IV). In summary, the results of the thesis show that person transfer situations in dementia special care units are influenced by different biopsychosocial factors and that the new assessment scale can support decision-making about treatment strategies. These findings are important in promoting evidence-based behavior change strategies that can facilitate both sets of individuals—i.e., both persons with dementia and caregivers—in transfer situations. The results highlight important research issues that merit attention in future studies.

Abstract:
This thesis research explores the influence of the community-based rehabilitation approach on development programming in Gulu, Uganda. This CBR approach, originally designed to address the multidimensional needs of persons with disabilities living in rural, low-income regions, has been endorsed by many development actors, including the Government of Uganda and the United Nations. It also holds the potential to address the complex intersection of disability, poverty and conflict that resulted from two decades of violent conflict in Northern Uganda. An environmental scan and interviews with development professionals from the local government and non-government organizations was conducted to identify the ways in which this international policy idea has influenced development programming, and the obstacles to implementing community-based rehabilitation in Gulu. This research contributes to the literature on policy transfer, and illustrates how local development actors often lack the capacity to fully implement and sustain international “best practices.” While community-based rehabilitation may be a way to address the nexus of disability, poverty and conflict in places like Gulu, too few resources have been committed to fully implementing it and supporting persons with disabilities.

Abstract:
Abstract Media is generally conceptualized as any communicative conduit that conveys ideas or meaning between one place or person and another. However, media products—and particularly intermedial products—do not always transmit meanings and ideas smoothly. This chapter explores a series of historical and contemporary media objects and performances that do not facilitate “successful” transfers of meaning, partly due to their intermedial configurations. Each of these media objects and performances both conceal and reveal, either accidentally as a byproduct of experimentation with the medium’s modalities or purposefully as an aesthetic, social, or cultural intervention. The author argues that these concealments and intermedial “gaps” generate new modes of expression, new artistic experiences for audiences and performers, and new conceptual understandings of existing genres and media.

This right to continuous protection of personal data is an unwritten constituent part of the right to data protection in Article 8 CFR. Primary Union law in Article 16(2) TFEU instructs the European Parliament and the Council to establish rules relating to the protection of individuals regarding the processing of their personal data. This mandate also extends to the extraterritorial dimension of the right to data protection. Accordingly, Chapter V GDPR sets out the system for the transfer of personal data from the EU to third countries. The first section of this chapter defines the legal concept of “data transfers” and introduces the three legal mechanisms for the transfer of personal data in Chapter V GDPR (Sect. 3.1). The following sections address the three legal mechanism and their role in guaranteeing the right to continuous protection for personal data. Each section entails a fundamental rights analysis for the transfer of personal data on the basis of a legal mechanism in Chapter V GDPR. The second section is dedicated to data transfers based on adequacy decisions for third countries following Article 45 GDPR (Sect. 3.2). The third section is dedicated to data transfers based on the instruments providing appropriate safeguards in Article 46 GDPR such as standard data protection clauses and binding corporate rules (BCRs) (Sect. 3.3). Finally, the fourth section is dedicated to data transfers subject to contract-based and consent-based derogations in Article 49 GDPR (Sect. 3.4).

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter studies whether participation in conditional income transfer programmes in Latin America generates observable political responses and whether these responses indicate improvements in the political inclusion of participants. It adopts a causal mechanism approach to study political responses to transfer receipt, seeking to cast light on the links existing between transfer receipt and political outputs and outcomes among recipients. A review of available literature helps identify three possible causal mechanisms: a support for redistribution mechanism; a bureaucratic mechanism encouraging political engagement; and a cognitive change mechanism. Analysis of empirical counterparts using attitudinal data from the AmericasBarometer for the period 2010–2019 confirms the relevance of these mechanisms for our understanding of political responses of conditional income transfers recipients.

Abstract:
The socio-economic changes brought about by globalisation, the internationalisation and digitalisation of higher education, as well as the current demographic situation in Europe and Latvia, raise the issue of the competitiveness of academic staff in the context of multicultural higher education. The aim of the study is to provide a theoretical basis for the competitiveness of academic staff in the view of educational sciences, respecting the different trends and based on the conceptual approaches in personal/specialist competitiveness research. The following research methods were used: study, analysis and evaluation of scientific literature (theoretical research method); reflection of personal experience (empirical research method). As a result of the theoretical research, two trends for the substantiation of the concept of competitiveness in the educational sciences were identified. The first trend: the competitiveness of a person is substantiated through transfers from economic and management science, with a particular emphasis on specialist marketability and employability as a significant manifestation of competitiveness. The second trend: according to the new paradigm of competitiveness in educational sciences, the competitiveness of a human as a person and as a specialist is based on the perspective of pedagogy and psychology. The research results led to the conclusion that there are three conceptual approaches in the methodology of competitiveness research: 1) qualitative approach: identifies and lists competitive personality traits and qualities; 2) functional approach: describes the competitive behaviour of a person or specialist; 3) structural approach: competitiveness is substantiated as a complex combination of personal/specialist qualities, identifying several structural components. All of these approaches are also characteristic to the research of competitiveness of academic staff. The following taxonomy should be respected in the substantiation of academic staff competitiveness: 1) substantiation of personal competitiveness; 2) substantiation of specialist competitiveness in the context of different industries; 3) the substantiation of the competitiveness of specifically academic staff in the context of the specifics of higher education.

Abstract:
Model fine-tuning is a widely used transfer learning approach in person Re-identification (ReID) applications, which fine-tuning a pre-trained feature extraction model into the target scenario instead of training a model from scratch. It is challenging due to the significant variations inside the target scenario, e.g., different camera viewpoint, illumination changes, and occlusion. These variations result in a gap between the distribution of each mini-batch and the distribution of the whole dataset when using mini-batch training. In this paper, we study model fine-tuning from the perspective of the aggregation and utilization of the global information of the dataset when using mini-batch training. Specifically, we introduce a novel network structure called Batch-related Convolutional Cell (BConv-Cell), which progressively collects the global information of the dataset into a latent state and uses this latent state to rectify the extracted feature. Based on BConv-Cells, we further proposed the Progressive Transfer Learning (PTL) method to facilitate the model fine-tuning process by joint training the BConv-Cells and the pre-trained ReID model. Empirical experiments show that our proposal can improve the performance of the ReID model greatly on MSMT17, Market-1501, CUHK03 and DukeMTMC-reID datasets. The code will be released later on at \url{https://github.com/ZJULearning/PTL}

León, Carlos. The dawn of a mobile payment scheme: The case of Movii. Banco de la República, March 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.32468/be.1157.

Full text
Abstract:
Mobile wallets replicate physical wallets on a mobile device, in which users can store different payment instruments (e.g., cards, transfers) to make mobile payments. As the mobile wallet is adopted, a mobile payment scheme emerges, with its users as elements in a network of transfers. In this article, I study the mobile payment scheme of Movii— the first fintech firm in Colombia operating under a financial non-banking license for electronic deposits and payments. Based on a unique dataset of bilateral transfers between Movii’s mobile wallet users, I build, visualize and analyze Movii’s network, daily from November 18, 2017, to November 25, 2020. Besides the anticipated increase in the number of users and the value of transfers, the visual and quantitative complexity of the network of transfers increases over time. This increase in complexity is likely to be linked to the adoption of Movii’s mobile wallet, which results in users finding new ways to use mobile payments beyond person-to-person transfers, including person-to-business and business-to-business. Also, results suggest the Covid-19 pandemic accelerated the evolution of Movii’s mobile payments scheme.

Abstract:
Sending SMS reminders increased the probability of on-time renewals of IDs by 12 percentage points, while also allowing citizens to renew their IDs online only increased renewals by 8 percentage points. Providing an online option (instead of in-person renewals) was less effective due to a poor user experience with the online procedure. The poorest individuals who received reminders were also more likely to receive transfers from an emergency in-kind transfer delivered through digital vouchers.

Full text
Abstract:
Remittances constitute a significant safety net for millions of households in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Consequently, changes in international transfers can be a crucial agent of transmission of the COVID-19 induced economic crisis from richer to poorer nations and from urban to rural areas. Relying on data on queries to the search engine Google between December 2018 and July 2021, this study looks at the evolution of demand for in-person versus digital international transfer services and evaluates if take-up rates of different types of service providers trace the initial drop and subsequent rebound of remittances. The recovery of remittances was accompanied by a modest and temporary increase in the interest in digital mechanisms for sending money to home countries, which is accompanied by lower demand for brick-and-mortar service providers.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper sheds light on the personal security dimension of ride-hailing from a gender perspective. We explore how features of Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) services affect riders perceptions of security when commuting in ride-hailing services, and how general perceptions of fear of crime shape the way people value such features. Moreover, we analyze the strategies women and men are using to enhance their own security in ride-hailing and factors influencing these strategies. We conducted a survey of users of the TNC DiDi in Mexico City. The statistical methods used are structural equation models SEM and ordered logit models OLOGIT. Results show that women are more likely to value the information made available by ride-hailing applications (e.g., knowing your location or knowing driver information) and the presence of a panic button. The value given to information also increases if a person feels insecure in the streets, in a public transit station or in public transit. People who perceive higher insecurity in the streets have increased positive perceptions of the possibility of travelling without transfers. We also find that women are 64.4% less likely to share ride-hailing trips (pooling) and 2.14 times more likely to share details of their trips through their cellphones.
