Abstract:
Perniosis, or chilblain, is an uncommon condition of the acral skin. Presented herein is a case report of a 65-year-old otherwise healthy construction worker with perniosis. He had a 3-year history of lesions on the fingers and toes brought on by cold, damp weather. On initial presentation, a biopsy sample was taken of a hallux lesion, and the patient was given a trial course of nifedipine therapy. Follow-up at 3 weeks showed complete relief of symptoms with nifedipine use, and the biopsy results confirmed the diagnosis. The etiology and pathogenesis of perniosis are reviewed. Differential diagnoses and treatment options are reviewed and discussed. Nifedipine therapy has been shown to be effective and should be considered the standard of care in the treatment of perniosis along with avoidance of cold, damp environments, with protection using gloves and warm socks.

The main objective of the slaughtering of animals for human consumption is to obtain meat in quantity and with quality. Thus, the meat needs to be within the standards required by current legislation. However, the agroindustry still faces serious problems due to microbiological contamination of carcasses during slaughter and/or processing. Alternatives proposed aiming to decontaminate carcasses during slaughter include treatment with the use of organic acids and/or steam. Such treatments aim to ensure the biological safety of foods and complement the autocontrol programs of industry on a prevention basis, such as hygiene care during the handling of foods and the sanitization of equipment to avoid any type of cross contamination. However, little research has provided conclusive information regarding whether these treatments lead to organoleptic and physico-chemical changes in the pork, which would be completely undesirable in terms of the quality parameters. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the possible physico-chemical changes in pork legs submitted to treatments with organics acids, steam and a combination of the two treatments. Visual and sensory analysis was carried out on the aspect, color, consistency and odor, before and after each treatment, together with physico-chemical analysis in order to determine the pH and the percentage of lipids, proteins, moisture and volatile compounds, also before and after each treatment. The results obtained revealed that the treatments used did not interfere in the attributes of aspect, color, odor and consistency and also did not lead to changes in the physico-chemical properties, with the exception that the treatment using organic acid combined with steam led to a decrease in the pH and increase in the moisture content and volatile compounds in the meat. However, this treatment did not denature the physicochemical quality of the pork, which remained within the standards, and therefore appropriate for human consumption

Abstract:
Many researchers have recently focused on the functional properties of muscles, and on the mechanics and kinematics of flight, without being able to consult an anatomical database since such a database was either non-existent or incomplete. In particular, this study examined the anatomy of the wing muscles of three Accipitridae, such as the European honey buzzard (Pernis apivorus Linnaeus, 1758), the northern goshawk (Accipiter gentilis Linnaeus, 1758) and the eurasian sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus Linnaeus, 1758). These birds of prey were selected due to their different flight style in order to understand if such different flight performance could induce muscles differentiation. The comparison of the results of this study with other researches shows that some muscles exhibit a lesser degree of differentiation as compared to other previously examined birds of prey. However, in other muscles, many peculiarities were found. Based on the common characteristics of these muscles have been grouped into three sets with possible common function: a) muscles stabilizing the wing to the trunk and damping the forces generated during the flight; b) muscles that could control the rotation of the humerus; c) muscles maybe involved in proprioception. During this research, some similarities with other species but also many anatomical features not previously reported have been found. This study of gross anatomy could be an interesting starting point for future researches, such as microscopic or electrophysiological analysis, demonstrating the importance of gross anatomy as a means of preliminary examination.

Mendes, Joana Maria Almeida. Master's thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.6/5337.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is divided into two chapters, the first is on the research titled "Chilblains: study of prevalence and resolution solutions in a convenience sample in Portugal", by conducting surveys, and the second chapter refers to the professional experience in a community pharmacy. Chilblains (scientifically referred to as perniosis or erythema pernio) are defined as injuries involving inflammatory acral areas such as hands and feet, these being the areas of most frequent occurrence. Chilblains affect mostly women and are characterized by symptoms of pain, burning and itching. Furthermore, they are subdivided into primary or idiopathic (usually self-limited), when they are not associated with any disease, and secondary, when adjacent to a disease. As no data is available on the prevalence and management practices for this disease in Portugal, the main objective of this study was to collect data on the prevalence of chilblains and the type of product used for treatment according to the severity manifested in a sample. A population of 336 was studied, where the individuals were residents of the districts of Braga, Porto, Viana do Castelo, Aveiro and Guarda, aged between 18 and 92 years old. In this population, 44.6% of the inquired reported to have/have had chilblains, mostly not chronic and self-limited, being more frequent in the Winter (93.3%). The most frequent location is the hands (79.3%) and feet (37.3%) and the most evident symptoms were itching (82.7%), pain (75.3%) mainly pulsating/throbbing and burning (74%). When it comes to treatment, 42 subjects reported taking bioflavonoids (Daflon®) and the vast majority used cream products for protecting and regenerating skin. Only about half of the inquired believe the products they take/apply improve their quality of life. The second chapter describes the internship held in community pharmacy, the activities and acquired skills. This internship was carried out in Gualtar Pharmacy in Braga, between January and June 2016, totaling 800 hours, under the supervision and guidance of Dr. Patricia Susana Santos Neves.
