Within organizations, "core" functions directly contribute to organizational production, whereas "peripheral" functions offer support by maintaining key infrastructure. Commonly viewed as indirect contributors or even adversaries to value, peripheral functions operate from positions of low authority and status, struggling to achieve their mandates and to build relationships that enable them to deliver optimal value to organizations. I argue that the peripheral status of these functions stems from a biased valuation process, in which compliance work, often negatively valued, is highly visible, whereas work inherently valuable to organizational pursuits is less visible. Building on an ethnographic study of peripheral Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) professionals in a university setting, this paper shows how these workers, recognizing that existing narratives undervalued their contributions, enacted their own narratives to address the visibility issues inherent in the valuation process. In doing so, these workers achieved higher status and more functional relationships with core workers. Specifically, EHS professionals first minimized the visibility of disruptions due to compliance, thereby building relationships of client service. Second, EHS professionals made visible inherent connections between their work and core organizational goals, thereby breaking down barriers between peripheral and core work, and building partnerships with core workers.

Abstract:
With the growth of ubiquitous computing, people are getting familiar and receptive to the idea of using non personal devices in public spaces. An example of such a possible device are the large ambient displays which can be found in airports, subway stations, malls, and bus stops. While most of these devices are not interactive, some offer interaction through touchscreen. This study explored the impact of body-movement-based interaction on engagement of a peripheral information display. We developed and exhibited two versions of the same peripheral information display in a public space. The first version offered interactivity while no interaction was available in the second version. We counted the number of people who watched/interacted with the displays and timed how long they spent doing so. Qualitative data was also gathered through semi structured interviews and non-participant observations. The statistical analysis provide evidences that the mean time spent watching/interacting with the peripheral information display is higher when there is interaction. We are 95% confident that the interval from 0.25 to 13.71 seconds contains the difierence of mean time spent watching/interacting with the display between the two versions. The interviews and observations indicated that the interaction implemented is easily understandable by the public in few seconds without the need of instructions.
Med framväxten av ubik datateknik blir människor allt mer bekanta och mottagliga för att använda allmänt tillgängliga enheter i det offentliga rum. Ett exempel på en sådan enhet är dom stora bildskärmar som placerats på flygplatser, tunnelbanestationer, köpcenter och busshållplatser. Dom flesta av dessa är inte interaktiva, men några är interaktiva genom touch. Denna studie utforskar effekten av kroppsrörelse-baserat interaktion på människors engagemang med perifera informationsskärmar. Vi utvecklade och ställde ut två versioner av en informationsskärm i ett offentligt rum. Den första versionen var interaktiv medans den andra var statisk. Vi räknade antalet människor som uppmärksammade/interagerade med informationsskärmen och tog tiden på hur länge dom eventuellt stannade. Kvalitativ data samlades genom intervjuer genom semistrukturerade intervjuer och icke-deltagande observationer. Statistisk analys av data ger underlag för att säga att medelvärdet för tid spenderat framför informationsskärmen var högre när den var interaktiv. Med ett konfidensintervall på 95% slår vi fast att skillnaden i medelvärde för tid spenderat engagerad med informationsskärmen ligger mellan 0,25 och 13,71 sekunder för dom två versionerna. Intervjuer och observationer pekar mot att den implementerade interaktionen är lätt att förstå inom loppet av några få sekunder utan behov av instruktioner.

Abstract:
Pilot spatial disorientation (SD) is a significant cause of incidents and fatal accidents in aviation. The pilot is susceptible to SD especially in low visibility when the visual system is deprived of information from outside the cockpit. This thesis presents the notion of visual flow displays as enhancement of symbology on flight displays primarily in low visibility for improved support of the pilot’s spatial orientation (SO) and control actions. In Studies I and II, synthetic visual flow of forward ego-motion was presented on displays and postural responses were used as measures of display effectiveness in determining SO. The visual flow significantly affected SO, and although the increased stimulation of the visual periphery from a width of 45° to about 105° increased the effects there was no further effect at a width of about 150° (Studies I and II). Studies I and II also showed that omitting 20°- or 30°-wide central fields of view from the visual flow either reduced or not reduced the effects. Further, although inconclusive, Study II may indicate that horizon symbology in central visual field may enhance the effects of peripheral visual flow. The appropriate integration of peripheral visual flow with the head-up display symbology of the Gripen aircraft was presented. Acceleration in a human centrifuge was used in Study III to investigate the effects of synthetic visual flow on the primarily vestibular-dependent somatogravic illusion of pitch-up. Two experiments revealed a reduced illusion with the visual flow. The results of Experiment 2 showed the visual flow scene not only reduced the illusion compared with a darkness condition but also compared with the visual scene without visual flow. Thus, similar to the main findings of Studies I and II, synthetic visual flow can significantly affect SO and supports the visually dependent SO system in an essential manner.

Abstract:
This thesis seeks to understand how informal awareness, the presence and availability information of coworkers, can be provided in remote contexts through technology. Based on a workplace study, it was discovered that informal communication is an important part of work and is inadequately supported by current technology. Through research, it was suggested that information on presence and availability is that which facilitates informal communication. In order to design for this situation, this thesis features six interactive peripheral display prototypes which seek to provide informal awareness in an unobtrusive and effortless way to geographically distributed coworkers. Going beyond monitors, these prototypes seek to utilize natural human sensory-motor capabilities to ease perception and interaction. The results suggest such devices are appropriate at mediating awareness and have the potential to facilitate informal communication.

Abstract:

At night, the visibility is reduced and the demands on the driver increase. A safety system that enables the driver to discover warmer objects in the surroundings when the visibility are reduced, such as the Vision Enhancement System (VES) contributes to safer night-time driving. Since the benefits of this system are established, it is of interest to investigate different design aspects. The VES display has in earlier studies been positioned in front of the driver but different display positions such as peripheral placement should be evaluated.

The present simulator study is an investigation of the effects of different display positions inside the car. Two different display positions were investigated, in front of the driver and to the right of the driver. When driving with a display positioned to the right, the driver will have to divide his attention between the road scene and the display by turning his head or he might be able to use peripheral vision. It was hypothesised that there would be significant differences in driving performance between the two display positions in favour of the display position above the steering wheel.

The results were measured in driving performance as well as opinions from the participants. Results show that there were some significant differences and several tendencies of better driving performance when driving with the display in front of the driver. The participants also rated this display as being better positioned and effecting the driving in a more positive way than the display to the right. It was therefore concluded that that the most preferred display position is in front of the driver.

A fundamental issue in visual attention is the relationship between the useful field of view (UFOV), the region of visual space where information is encoded within a single fixation, and eccentricity. A common assumption is that impairing attentional resources reduces the size of the UFOV (i.e. “tunnel vision”). However, most research has not accounted for eccentricity-dependent changes in spatial resolution, potentially conflating fixed visual properties with flexible changes in visual attention. Williams (1988; 1989) argued that foveal loads are necessary to reduce the size of the UFOV, producing "tunnel vision". Without a foveal load, it is argued that the attentional decrement is constant across the visual field (i.e. "general interference"). However, other research asserts that auditory working memory (WM) loads produce tunnel vision. To date, foveal versus auditory WM loads have not been compared to determine if they differentially change the size of the UFOV. In two experiments, we tested the effects of a foveal (rotated L vs. T discrimination) task, and an auditory WM (N-back) task on an extrafoveal (Gabor) discrimination task. Gabor patches were scaled for size and processing time to produce equal performance across the visual field under single task conditions, thus removing the confound of eccentricity-dependent differences in visual sensitivity. The results showed that while both foveal and auditory loads reduced Gabor orientation sensitivity, only the foveal load interacted with retinal eccentricity to produce tunnel vision, clearly demonstrating task-specific changes to the form of the UFOV. This has theoretical implications for understanding the UFOV.

With advanced autonomy, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) operations will likely be conducted by single operators controlling multiple UAVs. As operator attention is divided across multiple supervisory tasks, there is a need to support the operator's awareness of the state of the tasks for safe and effective task management. This research explores enhancing audio cues of UAV interfaces for this futuristic control of multiple UAVs by a single operator. This thesis specifically assesses the value of continuous and discrete audio cues as indicators of course-deviations or late-arrivals to targets for UAV missions with single and multiple UAVs. In particular, this thesis addresses two questions: (1) when compared with discrete audio, does continuous audio better aid human supervision of UAV operations, and (2) is the effectiveness of the discrete or continuous audio support dependent on operator workload? An experiment was carried out on the Multiple Autonomous Unmanned Vehicle Experiment (MAUVE) test bed with 44 military participants. Specifically, two continuous audio alerts were mapped to two human supervisory tasks within MAUVE. These continuous alerts were tested against single beep discrete alerts. The results show that the use of the continuous audio alerts enhances a single operator's performance in monitoring single and multiple, semi-autonomous vehicles. The results also emphasize the necessity to properly integrate the continuous audio with other auditory alarms and visual representations in a display, as it is possible for discrete audio alerts to be masked by continuous audio, leaving operators reliant on the visual aspects of the display.

Abstract:
Hospital environments are ranked as one of the most stressful contemporary work environments for their employees, and this especially concerns nurses (Nejati et al. 2016). One of the core problems comprises the notion that the current technology adopted in hospitals does not support the mobile nature of medical work and the complex work environment, in which people and information are distributed (Bardram 2003). The employment of inadequate technology and the strenuous access to information results in a decrease in efficiency regarding the fulfilment of medical tasks, and puts a strain on the attention of the medical personnel. This thesis proposes a solution to the aforementioned problems through the design of ambient displays, that inform the medical personnel with the health statuses of patients whilst requiring minimal allocation of attention. The ambient displays concede a hierarchy of information, where the most essential information encompasses an overview of patients’ vital signs. Data regarding the vital signs are measured by biometric sensors and are embodied by shape-changing interfaces, of which the ambient displays consist. User-authentication permits the medical personnel to access a deeper layer within the hierarchy of information, entailing clinical data such as patient EMRs, after gesture-based interaction with the ambient display. The additional clinical information is retrieved on the user’s PDA, and can subsequently be viewed in more detail, or modified at any place within the hospital.In this thesis, prototypes of shape-changing interfaces were designed and evaluated in a hospital environment. The evaluation was focused on the interaction design and user-experience of the shape-changing interface, the capabilities of the ambient displays to inform users through peripheral awareness, as well as the remote communication between patient and healthcare professional through biometric data. The evaluations indicated that the required attention allocated for the acquisition of information from the shape-changing interface was minimal. The interaction with the ambient display, as well as with the PDA when accessing additional clinical data, was deemed intuitive, yet comprised a short learning curve. Furthermore, the evaluations in situ pointed out that for optimised communication through the ambient displays, an overview of the health statuses of approximately eight patients should be displayed, and placed in the corridors of the hospital ward.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the quality of displays at radiology departments and healthcare centers, viewing conditions, quality control practices and user experiences of viewing radiological images from displays during 2007. The study aimed to provide guidelines to improving the quality of image viewing from displays and viewing conditions in healthcare. The data was gathered from radiology departments at university hospitals in Finland and healthcare centers in the treatment area of responsibility of the Oulu University Hospital. Display technology, quality control practices and users experiences of viewing were determined using questionnaires. Technical measurements were performed in order to acquire information on displays performance and viewing conditions. In addition, observation was used to evaluate viewing conditions. Almost all displays at radiological departments were applicable for diagnostics. At healthcare centers all displays were inapplicable for diagnostics. Both organization groups had displays using obsolete cathode ray tube technology and these displays did not pass current acceptance criteria. Most radiology departments had viewing conditions which were compatible with existing guidelines, whereas at healthcare centers lighting conditions were too bright for viewing radiological images from displays. Acceptance testing was done only for few of the displays and quality control was not performed regularly. Personnel responsible for quality assurance felt they were provided with inadequate resources for performing display quality control. Clinicians at healthcare centers did not identify the poor performance of displays. Radiologists and clinicians at healthcare centers rarely performed quality assurance for displays. The quality of displays, viewing conditions and the assessment of display performance at healthcare organizations was not at the level required by the existing guidelines. Both the cathode ray tube displays and uncalibrated liquid crystal displays should either be replaced with new ones or calibrated. Lighting and positioning of displays ought to be rearranged in order to diminish reflections. Furthermore, doctors ought to be able to rearrange lighting conditions with ease. More resources ought to be directed to display quality control and different quality control practices should be unified. Both the users and the quality control personnel should also be provided with more training in display quality control. Regular display quality control should be extended to all healthcare organizations. Clinicians working at healthcare centers should be provided with adequate training in the use of image viewing software
Tiivistelmä Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää vuoden 2007 aikana radiologisten yksiköiden ja terveyskeskusten radiologisten kuvien katseluun tarkoitettujen näyttöjen laatu, kuvankatseluolosuhteet ja laadunvalvontakäytännöt sekä käyttäjien kokemuksia röntgenkuvien katselusta näytöiltä. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli antaa toimenpide-ehdotuksia kuvankatselun ja kuvankatseluolosuhteiden kehittämiseksi terveydenhuollossa. Aineisto muodostui otoksesta viiden yliopistollisen sairaalan radiologisista yksiköistä ja Oulun yliopistollisen sairaalan erityisvastuualueen terveyskeskuksista. Näyttöjen laitekanta, laadunvalvontakäytännöt ja lääkäreiden kokemuksia näyttötyöskentelystä selvitettiin kyselyllä. Mittausten ja havainnoinnin avulla saatiin tietoa näyttöjen suorituskyvystä ja kuvankatselutilojen valaistusolosuhteista. Radiologisten yksiköiden näytöt olivat teknisesti pääosin radiologisista kuvista tehtävään diagnostiikkaan soveltuvia. Terveyskeskuksissa käytettiin näyttöjä, jotka eivät soveltuneet diagnostiikkaan. Molemmissa ryhmissä poistuvaan katodisadeputkitekniikkaan perustuvia näyttöjä oli vielä käytössä, eikä yksikään mitatuista näytöistä saavuttanut hyväksyttävyyskriteereitä kaikkien suorituskyvyn mittaustulosten osalta. Suurimmassa osassa radiologisten yksiköiden työpisteissä huoneen valaistus oli suositusten mukainen, kun taas terveyskeskuksissa huoneiden valaistus oli liian voimakas radiologisten kuvien katseluun käytetyillä näytöillä. Vastaanottotarkastus oli tehty vain pienelle osalle näytöistä ja säännöllistä laadunvalvontaa tehtiin näytöille vähän. Laadunvalvojat kokivat resurssit riittämättömiksi näyttöjen laadunvalvontaan. Terveyskeskuslääkärit eivät itse tunnistaneet näytön huonoa suorituskykyä. Radiologit ja terveyskeskuslääkärit tekivät laadunvalvontaa käyttämilleen näytöille hyvin vähän. Tutkimuksen kohteena olleissa radiologisissa yksiköissä ja terveyskeskuksissa röntgenkuvien katseluun tarkoitettujen näyttöjen laatu, valaistusolosuhteet ja laadunvalvonta eivät vastanneet suosituksia. Katodisädeputkinäytöt ja kalibroimattomat nestekidenäytöt tulisi vaihtaa uusiin tai kalibroida. Valaistusta ja näyttöjen sijoittelua tulisi muuttaa heijastusten vähentämiseksi. Lisäksi lääkärillä tulisi olla mahdollisuus muuttaa valaistusta helposti. Näyttöjen laadunvalvontaan tulisi saada enemmän resursseja, laadunvalvontakäytännöt tulisi yhtenäistää ja käyttäjille sekä laadunvalvojille tulisi antaa lisää koulutusta näyttöjen laadunvalvontaan. Säännöllinen näyttöjen laadunvalvonta tulisi ulottaa kaikkiin terveydenhuollon organisaatioihin. Terveyskeskuslääkäreille tulisi antaa koulutusta kuvankatseluohjelmien käyttöön

The thesis project underlines the importance of designing calm and subtle technologies, by exploring how mobile communicative technologies, such as cell phones, could notify their users about incoming information in a more natural, and non-intrusive manner. The aim of the thesis was to find a way for cell phones to act more appropriately in public and social settings, where they now often are considered intrusive due to their uninhibited manifestations.The thesis provides a theoretical understanding of how normative expectations of cell phone conduct are constituted and maintained within public and social settings. The theories are further grounded in practical work, where the project employ user centered design methods and techniques to, in a collaborative manner, together with users explore the research field to generate insights. Solutions have further been prototyped and evaluated together with users in their everyday settings.Taking inspiration from calm technology, the project looks into how information can be notified, in a more subtle manner in the periphery of the user’s attention. Users’ own priming abilities have been considered as a personal way to recognize the notification and to further associate it as relevant information.As a solution for intrusive cell phones, the thesis proposes Knot; a signature based notification system, which builds on friends’ abilities to recognize each other’s characteristic traits. The system consists of a notification rope, which is a free standing phone accessory that twists and turns, when new information is arriving to the user’s cell phone. It can present whom the information is from by shaping itself into the sender’s representative Knot-signature. If the user can recognize the signature, it will immediately trigger a meaningful association to the person who sent the information.The solution builds upon the restrictiveness between those who can associate a certain signature to a certain person, and those who cannot. For those who have the ability to associate to the signature, its role as a notifier will become meaningful and informative, while for others, who do not share this ability, the signature would be subtle and meaningless, and hence not interfering. The thesis exemplifies how interfaces could provide users with output in a more natural way, by considering users’ previous skills and knowledge, and primarily their priming abilities.

In this thesis an eye-directed controller is developed that slaves the narrow field display within a split-foveal-peripheral-display system to the operator's gaze position. A neural network controller is proposed that directly maps the gaze position to the narrow field projection co-ordinates without the need for any axis or co-ordinate transformations. A novel image feature-extraction algorithm, for extraction of the pupil-purkinje difference measure, has been developed that exhibits robust and reproducible real-time performance. By providing foveal and peripheral vision in a far-field teleoperator through the eye-directed split-foveal-peripheral-display, visual information is sufficiently and naturally provided for the establishment of telepresence.

This thesis is about peripheral circuits of TFT-LCDs by using low temperature polysilicon (LTPS) process. A novel charging pump circuit and a novel Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) had been developed. Because traditional Dickson charge pump circuit features low efficiency and huge output ripple. In the novel charging pump circuit, it uses a new complementary architecture which has smaller ripple voltage and reaches 84.21% of the power efficiency. According as a traditional R-string DAC had a large area, the capacitor ratio of the traditional weighted-capacitor DAC was hard to control accuracy, a traditional switch-capacitor DAC had a long transfer time, and a traditional current DAC needed a set I-V converter. In the novel DAC circuit, it uses a switch-capacitor architecture. For the DAC, the power consumption is better than traditional SC-DAC and the circuit area was decreased significantly compared with traditional R-String DAC. The novel DAC has low integral nonlinearity error (INL) and differential nonlinearity Error (DNL) within one LSB.

Abstract Because of the problem of vision, the visual disability have to rely on their other senses, e.g., auditory, tactile, etc. to communicate with the world. On the information age, computer has become as a necessity. More and more visual disability utilize braille computer to get information. One of the peripherals of the braille computer is the braille display, which is a substitute of the monitor for visual disability to read the information in braille through computer. Field study and questionnaires have identified three problems: 1. The separation of control keys and the braille display results in unnecessary movements between keyboard and the braille display. 2. No tactile symbols on control keys gives visual disability extra memory load. 3. The operation statuses of peripherals are shown by lights which cannot be identified by visual disability. This research aims to design a braille display to solve these problems. After ensuring enough space to install control keys and peripheral signals on the inclination of the braille display, three pilot studies were conducted: 1. Experiment I studied the allocation and size of control keys. 2. Experiment II studied tactile symbols on control keys. 3. Experiment III studied peripheral signals. These experiments have shown the following three results: 1. On the inclination of the braille display, window control keys, cursor-window combination key, Enter key, and cursor control keys can be arranged from left to right respectively. 2. The most discriminated tactile symbol is an arrow shaped symbol (5mm x 7.5mm). 3. Instead of lights, the statuses of hard disk, floppy disk driver, and CD-ROM should be shown by a vibrating and sounding device. According to the results, a prototype of new braille display was made to compare with the old one in the performance of input time, and reading time. Preference between these two displays was also recorded. The results have shown that the new designed braille display can reduce reading time for those who use braille display with right hands. They also prefer the new designed braille display. When reading not input is required, users just need to use window and cursor control keys on the new designed braille display, therefore, the unnecessary movements between keyboard and display can be canceled out. At the time of hard disk, floppy disk driver, or CD-ROM is working, visual disability can detect the working status through touching the vibrating and sounding device on the new designed braille display. 98% of operating time is saved. This research has solved the problems mentioned above. Hopefully this research can get more people interesting in the topic of visual disability to facilitate them in the information age. Abstract:
Traditional peripheral displays rely on drawing the user's attention and gaze through alerts. These displays function best when the central task does not require the user's constant attention. For tasks that require a user to always maintain focus, alert-based displays are not appropriate. We assert that conveying information to a user without drawing his gaze, allows the user to maintain constant focus on his primary task while still receiving additional information. In this thesis we use video games to examine streaming peripheral displays as a means of presenting information without drawing gaze. The results of our experiments showed no significant difference between user performance using our display encoded for peripheral viewing versus an unencoded display. Additionally, we found that players were successfully able to perceive information shown on a streaming peripheral display, however, as game difficulty increased the effectiveness of the streaming peripheral display decreased. Finally, we show that as game level increases, users adopt risk-tolerant strategies. Drawing from these results, we have suggested some additional heuristics pertaining to streaming peripheral displays. Moreover, we have suggested further situations where streaming peripheral displays may be useful.
