Autoregressive models are commonly found in the context of hydrological series, specifically in streamflow and/or ANE series (Affluent Natural Energy). Most of them are models of order 1, which have constant or periodic parameters and need the requirement of normality. According to the literature, annual streamflow series can be approximated for normal distributions, however, in short periods of time, like daily, weekly and monthly, this feature is not observed, especially because of the asymmetry issue. Due to this reason, a new class of model of order 1 was studied for attempting to solve such problem. The new model keeps autoregressive structure and can be additive, multiplicative or hybrid, in which embodies additive and multiplicative properties together, but its marginals will assume gamma distribution. Moreover, this modeling departs from the presupposition that Methods of Moments are efficient to the estimation of its parameters. Recently, this approach, under the hybrid way, has not proved to be successful to the context of Brazilian hydrothermal dispatch. This work focuses on the complete analysis of hybrid model to the series of the Brazilian Electric Sector, bringing, as novelty, Maximum Likelihood Estimation, besides isolated studies of additive and multiplicative models. The results revealed a prosperous line of research, opening a field of possibilities for new orders or asymmetric distributions to be studied starting from this point.

It is the aim of the present work to study the published articles in the A Construção Moderna, the first Portuguese magazine, edited from the year 1900 to 1919, dedicated both to architecture and to building in general. In such an important period of time for the Portuguese history and culture, as the turning of the century was, this pioneer experience introduced the ideias, the concepts and the materials that sustained the architectural thought and production in the beginning of the modernism in Portugal. In the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, Portugal was an undeveloped country. With its fragile economy and an almost non-existent industry, no wonder that the urban development and the consequent architectural languages appeared rather late in this country. In a cultural atmosphere still very much influenced by the 19th romanticism, the characters of such trend, were mainly the educated people seduced by the positivist doctrine and by the realistic aesthetics. So the modernism question is introduced in Portugal through two different ways of both artistic and cultural influences: on the one hand the French context, through the Academy (where the national architects took their training), the racionalism, the beaux-arts references and the cosmopolitan «Haussmann city»; on the other hand, the 19th English scenery, through the Arts and Crafts, the gothic revival and the cultural tradicionalism. These educated men of the last decade of the 19th century got their inspiration in these two sources. They were engaged in the rebirth of the values of the national identity and in defending the traditional culture, the picturesque and the folklore, trying to define a national example of architecture. The magazine A Construção Moderna appeared under these circumstances through the will and effort of these three men: Nunes Colares, typographer and the project guide; Melo de Matos, engineer and skilful mathematician; and Rosendo Carvalheira, architect with a certain romantic spirit and extremely dedicated to the national cause.Throughout their careers, they fixed the great topics of the architectural culture of this period: the social and cultural importance of the architects; the art critics; the ‘Portuguese house’ model; the restore politics; the urban development; the ‘cheap houses’; the Portuguese ‘style’; and the introduction of the new technologies and new building materials in the civil construction, among many other problematics

Full textIn the perspective of researches about literature and press theory and about cultural transfers, this study presents a comparative analysis between Hector Berlioz’ and Théophile Gautier's theater serials and Brazilian dramatic writer Martins Pena’s serials about lyric theater wrote by the Brazilian dramatic writer Martins Pena. He wrote the series “Lyric Week” published in Jornal do Commercio in 1846-1847. In a diachronic perspective which consider the process of periodical press globalization in the 19th century, this investigation proposes to reconstruct and observe the transfers of media cultural practices from the French press to the Brazilian press which determined the acclimatization of the theater serials in Brazil. Emphasizing the method analysis, the construction of critical discourse and style of French theater serials and that of Martins Pena, we focused our study on the literary aspects as well as on the impact their adaptation had in the Brazilian press. Specifically, the form and manifestation of the (journalistic) irony in the writing of the columnists constitute the focus of the analysis. Our hypothesis is that Martins Pena adapted aspects of the French columnists’ literary writing, creating an autonomous and legitimate poetic. In addition to being the first cultural content chronicle series of the daily press of Rio de Janeiro, the “ Lyric Week” distinguishes itself from previous Brazilian theater serials through the ironic and fictional writing assimilated and recreated throughout the series by Martins Pena

Full textA Águia was the mouthpiece of the \"Renascença Portuguesa\" and this journal´s second series was, at least in its first years, heavily influenced by Saudosismo, a tendency whose leader was Teixeira de Pascoaes. A Águia was the starting point for several other important periodicals, among them Seara Nova and Terra de Sol. This research focuses on the second series of A Águia and compares this important journal with Seara Nova and Terra de Sol. Identifying the similarities and differences in these three periodicals, we were able to probe into several issues concerning the relationship between Brazil and Portugal in the first decades of the 20th century: the concepts of nation imbedded in the discourses found in these periodicals; the idea of engagement among the intellectuals involved in these projects; and the relationship between Brazilian and Portuguese modernismos.

This work aims at the analysis of the Average Total Cost of working systems subject to periodical politics of inspection based on concepts of the Reliability Theory. Thus, it considers systems of varying complexity mode up of one or more components assembled in series and in para/lei with exponential lifetime, whose flaws are only detectable through inspection. Based on these premises and making use of adequate analytical and statistical procedures, it arrives at some solutions to the calculation of the inspection period which minimizes the Average Total Cost per working cycle of the respective system. It specially examines the accuracy of the obtained approximations, concluding that some ca be considered almost optimum. It also analyses and compares, for different va/ues of the inspection cost, some quantities re/pted to the reliability of the system and in particular to the Minimum Average Total Cost per cycle associated to each of the severa/ approximations, resulting in interesting conclusions.
