Rodgers, Paul A. "Product performance assessment." Thesis, University of Westminster, 1995. https://westminsterresearch.westminster.ac.uk/item/94998/product-performance-assessment.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes a formal methodology for defining and assessing product performance and its implementation in a prototype computer system. The methodology is based on abstract descriptions of the operations that are conducted within the design process. It is, consequently, extremely generic and creates a bridge between physical product performance and actual user requirements. The methodology is based on defining product attributes in terms of observable parameters of the product in use. Defining an attribute in this way inherently reflects its required interaction with the user and consequently can truly be said to be in "user terms" A product will have a range of attributes and a performance indicator is proposed, such that the attributes are combined in a way that reflects their relative importance to the user. At the conceptual stage of the design process, when the actual product does not exist, and only some abstract representation is available, it is vitally important to be able to model or simulate and hence evaluate the product attributes. This area of design has often been associated with non algorithmic design procedures, because of its intangible nature. In this thesis the attribute methodology has been used to implement a prototype Computer Aided Design Evaluation Tool (CADET), which has been used and tested with an existing product range. The methodology being abstractly defined supports a wide range of product attributes. It also gives an indication of how the correspondingly wide range of existing analysis software could be integrated into a powerful single Computer Aided Design system. This work has resulted in the publication of two papers in refereed Journals and the presentation of eight other papers at refereed International Conferences. A list of the publications is included in the Appendices.

This work aims to analyze the concepts of ritual developed by Richard Schechner and Victor Turner. This is realized through the definition, analysis and discussion of the concepts looking for the dialog between Schechner and Turner. The research was developed by reading and analysing the major volumes published by these authors, what is Schism and Continuity; Forest of Symbols; The Ritual Process; Dramas, Fields and Metaphors and From Ritual to Theater by Turner and made by Schechner Environmental Theater; Essays on Performance Theory; Between Theater and Anthropology; The Future of Ritual and Performance Studies. Was not found any work like this. It is an inedited and presented an important review on Schechner‟s and Turner‟s written. The ritual concept needs this multiplicity look to take a new breath and look up different sea-lines. This job has a methodological richness because points out precisely the fact that the research belongs analyse the field "between" the theatre and anthropology. It is not remand to any discipline and the same time belongs to all of them. This is a bibliographic study what can provide theoretical support for various research fields.
A pesquisa foi desenvolvida através da leitura e fichamento dos principais volumes publicados destes autores, sendo eles Schism and Continuity; Forest of Symbols; The Ritual Process; Dramas, Fields and Metaphors e From Ritual to Theater de Turner e de Schechner Environmental Theater; Essays on Performance Theory; Between Theater and Anthropology; The Future of Ritual e Performance Studies.

Thesis, Paris 1, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PA01E004/document.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on work performance, or in other words how work contributes to an organization’s performance. This topic has received little attention in the literature. However, the literature shows the complexity surrounding the notions of work and performance. Therefore, the question that this thesis seeks to answer is exploratory and methodological: "How to account for work performance within organisations?” This thesis adopts an interdisciplinary approach. It combines ergonomics and management control. The thesis develops an original, analytical framework aimed at understanding work performance using common categories in management control (discourse, measures, managerial practices) and in ergonomics (activity). The analytical framework structures the data collection methodology, which mainly relies on semi-structured interviews, documents, non-participatory observations and verbalizations. The first case study focuses on the performance of salespeople work in airports’ duty-free shops. The second case study focuses on the work performance of workers in an industrial SME.We show that using the analytical framework enables us to account for work performance and underscore the often implicit and divergent dimensions of how work contributes to organisational performance. We also highlight that the actors’ representations of work performance are partially independent of those conveyed by the measures. Finally, the thesis demonstrates that work and its performance are a legitimate and relevant research object in management control

Vogel, Hans-Arthur. "Airport privatisation and performance." Thesis, University of Westminster, 2004. https://westminsterresearch.westminster.ac.uk/item/93499/airport-privatisation-and-performance.

Full text
Abstract:
This study assesses the financial performance of a representative sample of 35 European commercial airports for the period 1990 to 1999 inclusive, comparing those subject to partial or full privatisation with those in public ownership. It is hypothesized that privatised airports operate more efficiently than others and that they are an attractive investment as compared to alternative capital projects. Partial factor productivity (PFP), total factor productivity (TFP) indicators and financial ratio analysis (FRA) outcomes are compared, in order to investigate differences which may be attributable to the degree of privatisation. The main results of PFP and FRA indicators are tested by an independent and a paired-samples t-test for differences between airports in public, mixed public-private and fully private ownership. Changes in performance after a change in ownership structure are reviewed. The analysis of sample data reveals economically meaningful and statistically significant differences between publicly owned and privatised airports. The latter group is not a homogeneous one but shows decisive structural differences between partially and fully privatised companies. The major differences lie in operating efficiency, asset utilization and capital structure, which vary substantially with the respective ownership status. Whereas privatised airports are more cost efficient, publicly owned airports generate comparatively higher ratios of unit revenues and work load units to total assets. Their asset turnover is higher but the capital expenditure to total revenue ratio is lower. The increased operating efficiency of partially and fully privatised airports does not, however, translate into higher returns on equity in general. Only partially privatised sample airports may be considered an attractive investment. Regarding capital structure and financing of productive assets, publicly owned airports assume more debt relatively to their respective shareholders' funds, which results in considerably higher gearing and financial leverage, compensating for the comparatively low return rate on assets. Based on the findings of this research, key success factors and value drivers of the airports' business model are identified and consequences for airport management are deduced. Major contributions to the knowledge on the subject result from an application of financial ratio analysis to the sector, including the analysis of capital structures, the usage of performance indicators and financial ratios before and after privatisation and from conducting a DEA analysis strictly based on financial variables.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to problematize how and under what conditions organizational performance is constituted in the practices of performance auditing and accounting. Organizational performance disclosure is a world-wide phenomenon for enabling accountability relationships in large organizations regardless of the societal sector they operate in. In constitutive accounting literature, there is a well-established notion that accounting and performance auditing enable “government at a distance” by representing organizational actions and results of those actions, i.e. by constituting performance.  Accounting and performance auditing have been regarded as “technologies of government” that make government from spatial and temporal distances possible by linking political and programmatic ambitions, i.e., the will of a superior, to everyday organizational conduct. However, whereas many previous studies of accounting and performance auditing as technologies of government focus on the discourses over the technologies of accounting and performance auditing, this thesis focuses its analysis on the operationalization of these technologies in local organizational settings. By studying the constitution of performance in the practices of accounting and performance auditing this thesis contributes by problematizing that which supposedly makes government at a distance possible. The thesis is based on two case studies of performance audit and two case studies of performance reporting. On the basis of these papers, the thesis studies the constitution of performance in performance auditing and accounting. Whereas the constitution of performance may seem stable and unproblematic at the level of discourse, this thesis suggests that constituting performance is a complex process of social construction that requires significant organizational efforts and that the ability of accounting and performance auditing to connect political and programmatic ambitions to daily organizational conduct cannot be taken for granted. The thesis suggest that once we acknowledge that performance is a socially constructed representation of organizational actions and begin to pay attention to how performance is constituted in local organizational settings, we can find new ways of addressing the ongoing challenge of constituting performance in accounting and performance auditing and increase our understanding about the ability of these practices to enable government at a distance.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates how Victor Turner’s concept of ‘cultural performance’ can be used to explore and analyse the experience of film. Drawing on performance theory, hermeneutics, phenomenology and Bakhtin’s dialogism, Sections One and Two develop this investigation through a theoretic discussion which relates and yet distinguishes between three levels of ‘performance’ in film: filmmaking performance, performances as text and cultural performances. The theory is grounded within four films which were researched for this thesis: Once Were Warriors (Lee Tamahori, 1994), Rats in the Ranks (Bob Connolly and Robin Anderson,1996), beDevil (Tracey Moffatt, 1993) and Link-Up Diary (David MacDougall, 1987). Section Three undertakes the close analyses of the latter two films. These analyses address specific cultural performances that are performed ‘across’ cultures and which are concerned particularly with Australian society’s relationship with indigenous Australians. ¶ Section One locates Turner’s concept of ‘cultural performance’ within his wider theory of ‘social drama’ and introduces the three-tiered mode of analysis which is developed throughout this thesis. His concept of ‘liminality’ is also investigated in order to consider specific relationships between performances which take place in film and theatre. Performances which take place in film are located in this Section within the theatrical understanding of performance as ‘for an audience’. I describe this relationship between performances in film and theatre through Kristeva’s interpretation of Bakhtin’s concept of heteroglossia as intertextuality, especially through her distinction of a ‘transformative’ intertextuality. Three specific concepts from theatre and performance theory are interrogated for their relevance to film theory: 1. Brecht’s theory of ‘gest’, 2. ‘direct address to the audience’ in relation to the ‘gaze’ in film and 3. Rebecca Schneider’s conceptualisation of ‘the performance artist’. ¶ Using these three tropes of performance, Section Two develops a theory of performance in film. Besides Turner’s concept of ‘cultural performance’, this theory draws on aspects of several other substantial bodies of work. These works include Richard Schechner’s performance theory, Michael Taussig’s understanding of ‘mimesis’, Vivian Sobchack’s phenomenology of film, Paul Ricoeur’s theory of text ‘as meaningful action’, Gadamer’s concept of ‘meaningful play’, Bakhtin’s conceptualisation of a ‘dialogic’ text and Catherine Bell’s theory of ‘ritualised behaviour’. The two analyses in Section Three do not rigidly follow the three-tiered process of analysis which is developed in the previous two Sections. They rather focus on the films as sites for particular cultural performances which are specific for each film and which need for their description, different aspects of the theory that is offered through this thesis. These analyses especially draw on my interpretation of David MacDougall’s ‘transcultural cinema’ and Jodi Brook’s conceptualisation of a ‘gestural practice’ in film, which she positions both in terms of Brecht’s theatrical concept of ‘gest’ and Walter Benjamin’s concept of the ‘shock’ of modernity. ¶ The film analyses are of one fiction film, beDevil, and one non-fiction film, Link-Up Diary. Both films use audiovisual images of Aboriginal Australians as content. According the terms of this thesis, these people must also be considered as filmmakers. Although this role may constitute varying degrees of authority and power, a film analysis which considers the filmmaking roles of people whose images are present in the filmic text also allows a particular consideration of the social relationships which exist between people who ‘film’ and people who ‘are filmed’. My focus on the cultural performances of these two films allowed an even closer description of this relationship for two reasons. Firstly, both Moffatt and MacDougall respectively present their own images in the films. Secondly, my analyses of these films as cultural performance draw out and describe the different ways in which the two films address the same ‘social drama’: the relationship between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians. My analyses expose how a description of these differences in address can extend beyond the distinction between one film as ‘fiction’ and the other as ‘non-fiction’ towards a description of the different ways in which people relate to each other, at both the individual level and at the level of society, through the production and reception of a particular film. While locating these films as cultural performances within in particular sets of social relationships, my consideration of film in this thesis in terms of theatrical performance also enables a description of the experience of film which draws on the social experience of live theatre. The theory developed in this thesis and its application in the analyses of these two films suggest further areas of research which might look more closely at whether or not, or how much people draw from the social practices of live theatre as they live their lives with film – a signifying practice which has existed just over one hundred years.

Abstract:

Abstract:
More and more people all over the world are using a USB modem to connect to the Internet. This is especially true in Sweden- which has the highest 3G coverage in Europe. Comparable to fixed broadband access, using a 3G USB modem is a wonderful experience for the customer. Increasingly, anywhere we can use our cellular phone is a place that we are able to access the Internet, even if we are traveling in a train, walking in a park, or sitting on the beach. This makes working on the move much easier. However, customers do not know if the network throughput, delay, and the cost of connectivity match their needs. Additionally, there is also the question of the time to connect to the network when there has not been some traffic for a period of time. However, the throughput, delay, and "time to connect" when using such a modem to connect to a wireless network depend on several factors. In this thesis we will examine these factors. More specifically, the thesis will analyze in detail the effects of using a USB attached network interface, in order to gain greater understanding of such an interface’s network performance. We have chosen to focus on the uplink, as it was expected to have a low throughput and it has not had as much attention as the downlink performance.

Trapp, Peter. "Performance improvements using dynamic performance stubs." Thesis, De Montfort University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2086/5335.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis proposes a new methodology to extend the software performance engineering process. Common performance measurement and tuning principles mainly target to improve the software function itself. Hereby, the application source code is studied and improved independently of the overall system performance behavior. Moreover, the optimization of the software function has to be done without an estimation of the expected optimization gain. This often leads to an under- or overoptimization, and hence, does not utilize the system sufficiently. The proposed performance improvement methodology and framework, called dynamic performance stubs, improves the before mentioned insufficiencies by evaluating the overall system performance improvement. This is achieved by simulating the performance behavior of the original software functionality depending on an adjustable optimization level prior to the real optimization. So, it enables the software performance analyst to determine the systems’ overall performance behavior considering possible outcomes of different improvement approaches. Moreover, by using the dynamic performance stubs methodology, a cost-benefit analysis of different optimizations regarding the performance behavior can be done. The approach of the dynamic performance stubs is to replace the software bottleneck by a stub. This stub combines the simulation of the software functionality with the possibility to adjust the performance behavior depending on one or more different performance aspects of the replaced software function. A general methodology for using dynamic performance stubs as well as several methodologies for simulating different performance aspects is discussed. Finally, several case studies to show the application and usability of the dynamic performance stubs approach are presented.

Thesis (MDram)--Stellenbosch University, 2012
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Poetry performance as a universal phenomenon is a performing art form. The aim of this study is to explore the diverse nature of this art form. The different types are investigated according to their nature and the reasons provided as motivation for the way in which these types are presented. This study focuses on the following types: poetry found in ritual, poetry readings, poetry recitals, poetry as part of word art (woordkuns), sung poetry, the verse drama and drama’s based on poetry. Under each of these categories relevant examples of each type are discussed. A background study which is primarily focused on a brief overview of the history of poetry performance in relation to its origin and development serves as an introduction and foundation for the study. Hereupon the different types of poetry performances, with relevant and contemporary variations as examples, are being compared to each other with the aim to elucidate the main similarities as well as differences between these examples. As part of the research of poetry performance, a practical project exploring the specific nature of dramas based on poetry was executed. This drama, called Ontslape, shares various comparisons as well as differences with other examples of contemporary drama’s based on poetry. It also shares similarities with word art (woordkuns). Although it is possible to distinguish between certain types of poetry performance, it however also appears that some types overlap in more than one way and therefore the conclusion can be made that poetry performance as a phenomenon consists of various possibilities.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Poësie performance as universiële verskynsel is ‘n uitvoerende kunsvorm.

In my MA thesis entitled Performance: Selected issues of performance studies and an outline of the current state performance in the Czech Republic, I focus on the phenomenon of performance, which is often a topic of heated debate in theater studies and humanities in general. It is a topic that is controversial, relevant and still open. In the first part, I try to brig the topic into context and to outline a possible classification of performance. In the second part, I will try to answer the following three questions relating to performance studies: 1. To what extent are performance and experiment simile? 2. Why did Barba opt for this particular type of cultural exchange and what does it mean in context? 3. What is the importance of the idealisation of normative identity to the study of performance? In the third section, I will try to use structured and semistructured interviews with artists to provide an outline of the current state of performance in the Czech Republic.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Analyzing and understanding the performance behavior of parallel applicationson various compute infrastructures is a long-standing concern in the HighPerformance Computing community. When the targeted execution environments arenot available, simulation is a reasonable approach to obtain objectiveperformance indicators and explore various ''what-if?'' scenarios. In thiswork we present a framework for the off-line simulation of MPIapplications. The main originality of our work with regard to the literature is to rely on\tit execution traces. This allows for an extreme scalability as heterogeneousand distributed resources can be used to acquire a trace. We propose a formatwhere for each event that occurs during the execution of an application we logthe volume of instructions for a computation phase or the bytes and the type ofa communication. To acquire time-independent traces of the execution of MPI applications, wehave to instrument them to log the required data. There exist many profilingtools which can instrument an application. We propose a scoring system thatcorresponds to our framework specific requirements and evaluate the mostwell-known and open source profiling tools according to it. Furthermore weintroduce an original tool called Minimal Instrumentation that was designed tofulfill the requirements of our framework. We study different instrumentationmethods and we also investigate several acquisition strategies. We detail thetools that extract the \tit traces from the instrumentation traces of somewell-known profiling tools. Finally we evaluate the whole acquisition procedureand we present the acquisition of large scale instances. We describe in detail the procedure to provide a realistic simulated platformfile to our trace replay tool taking under consideration the topology of thereal platform and the calibration procedure with regard to the application thatis going to be simulated. Moreover we present the implemented trace replaytools that we used during this work. We show that our simulator can predictthe performance of some MPI benchmarks with less than 11\% relativeerror between the real execution and simulation for the cases that there is noperformance issue. Finally, we identify the reasons of the performance issuesand we propose solutions.

Abstract:
Entrepreneurship, innovation and internationalization are topics of great interest for the scientific community, companies and for all major governments worldwide. In literature there are many studies that are interested and look for the relationship between entrepreneurship and performances. Based on the literature on entrepreneurship, open innovation (OI), green innovation performance (GIP) and export performance (EP), we extend the model by hypothesizing and studying to what extent the entrepreneurial orientation (EO) is influenced and mediated by a construct that has become a hot topic among the scientific community in the last decade, as is open innovation; impacting and facilitating the processes of green innovation and the internationalization of the companies. All this is done in an empirical study in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), where resources are scarce and strategies, linked to green production and export plays a fundamental role for their performance. Taking, as a sample Spanish companies in the footwear industry and companies related to science parks, the analyses are carried out to test these relationships through Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). It is expected to find a positive relationship in the object of study.

Abstract:
The aim of this research study was to conduct an investigation to establish whether a performance management system would facilitate the achievement of the organisation’s strategic goals and objectives. The organisation used as a case study in this research uses a performance appraisal process which is not effective in facilitating the organisation’s strategic goals and objectives. Hence, this study has been undertaken against the above background. The researcher has utilised a positivist paradigm in this research. This means that the researcher has used a quantitative methodology in the process of data collection. A random sampling technique was used with an aim of including critical elements of the population of this study. More particularly, 50 employees of the organisation were electronically presented with a questionnaire based on important key elements of performance management. Moreover, the questionnaire included a Likert type scale consisting of closed and opened-end questions. Questionnaires were received from 35 employees, of which one was from senior management, 13 project managers, 12 from supervisory staff and 9 from support staff. Statistica was used in this research as a software program for the quantification of the data. This study revealed that the transition to a performance management will help the selected company achieve their strategic goals and objectives. Recommendations are made for the role of line management and the role of human resources in performance management.

In this dissertation, I accompany young trajectories tune with the Gothic in their leisure circuit in Fortaleza city, in order to observe how they lived an experience with this art world in different spaces and musical events. I bring to research the following questions: how these young people produce an experience with gothic from these meetings? What distinguishes or characterizes this experience? The work includes a description of the trajectories, events, performances, consumptions and affections that constitute and characterize these meetings, while seeking to describe the multiplicity of interactions and flows through the subjectivities of these young people. During the investigation, I use the concept of art world prepared by Becker (2010) as a methodological strategy into think of the gothic universe as a network of cooperation between individuals around artworks in the case, the Gothic art.

Manufacturers of computer clusters require tools to assist them in making better decisions in terms of architectural design. To address this need, in this thesis work, we focus on the specific issues of estimating computation times and InfiniBand network congestion. These two problems are often dealt with globally. However, an overall approach does not explain the reasons of performance loss related to architectural choices. So our approach was to conduct a more detailed study. In this thesis work, we focus on the following : 1) the estimation of computation time in a Grid, and 2) the estimation of communication times over Infiniband networks. To evaluate the computation time, the proposed approach is based on a static or semi-static analysis of the source code, by cutting it into blocks, before making a micro-benchmarking of these blocks on the targeted architecture. To estimate the communication time, a model of bandwidth sharing for Infiniband networks has been developed, allowing one to predict the impact related to concurrent communications. This model was then incorporated into a simulator to be validated on a set of synthetic communication graphs and on the application Socorro

Abstract:

In today’s competitive environment, in which competition increases and the pace of technological change accelerates, the need for deploying product development investments more efficiently and effectively is stronger than ever. The ability to create streams of new successful products to the market is vital for every product delivering company’s survival. Performance measurements are important in order to evaluate the current state of operation of the product development and decide on actions to improve its’ performance. However, in contrast to the concept of productivity in the production process there are no commonly adopted methods for measuring performance within product development. The methodology used in this research is explorative multiple case studies at five companies developing complex products. Complex products in this research involve mechanics, electronics, and software. Moreover, complex products are often long living and most development work is evolutionary in character. An extensive interview study among senior managers and decision makers has been conducted to get a broad and systematic understanding of what performance is and what to measure. The main results developed from this research are two conceptual tools. The first one, the Performance Measurement Evaluation Matrix (PMEX) can be used to evaluate the performance measurement system used at a company. The PMEX makes it possible for managers to get a more holistic view and discuss what the performance measurement system is measuring, and what it is not measuring, in order to decide on what to measure. The second tool, the Product Development Organizational Performance Model (PDOPM) can be used to conceptually analyze performance in the product development process from a holistic system perspective. This is achieved by making efficiency, effectiveness, and uncertainty explicit and by showing how they relate at a strategic, project, and product implementation level. The PMEX and the PDOPM can be used by managers in order to increase the understanding of what performance is and to be able to decide on actions in order to improve the performance of the product development process.

Abstract:
This dissertation is a case study of the public performances of Gregory Bateson at The Esalen Institute. The case study is a reconsideration of the work of Gregory Bateson from the perspective of performance studies. The author brings together performativity, cybernetics, and the sacred to argue that Gregory Bateson, in his public performances, was striving for grace in encounters with others. The author has conducted archival research into Bateson’s presentations and has spoken with several close to Bateson to get a sense of how his process of public presentation paralleled his ideas—a process of continually working through ideas in conversation with others. In his dissertation the author tries to present the work in a form fitting with Bateson's own process.

Abstract:
The history of art and religion is intricately linked in Western culture. This thesis focuses on one strand of this relationship and is concerned with the role of performance practices in relation to spirituality in the West. Contemporary performance practice and theory are at the centre of this research. Case studies on the Roman Catholic Liturgy and the performance artist Marina Abramovi! are used to show how traditional analyses of spiritual performance have not accounted for the effects and affects of metaphysics in how we understand belief. I argue that examinations of spiritual performance are needed which do not try to understand such performances in terms of their representative meaning, but rather, seek to account for their performative qualities as practices that both instantiate and manifest belief. Performative theory has been used extensively to analyse language and human action, specifically the performance of gender. Here belief is taken as the subject of performative action and rituals are examined as performance practices which perform belief. Starting with Jacques Derrida, I begin a discussion of metaphysics and representation, tracing the nature of Western understandings of belief from Plato, to Friedrich Nietzsche, to Derrida, and to contemporary theological investigations into the nature of the human soul. This establishes the metaphysical history of the treatment of belief as well as various theoretical attempts to move past this model. The work of J.L. Austin, John R. Searle, Judith Butler and Saba Mahmood is employed to examine belief through speech act theory as a verb and finally through performative theory as an action. The first half of the thesis contextualises Western belief as a culturally specific entity that has not been analysed or understood in relation to its physical and material aspects, as well as developing an analysis of performative action. The second half applies the performative approach to the case studies.

Abstract:
Advances in processor design have delivered performance improvements for decades. As physical limits are reached, however, refinements to the same basic technologies are beginning to yield diminishing returns. Unsustainable increases in energy consumption are forcing hardware manufacturers to prioritise energy efficiency in their designs. Research suggests that software modifications will be needed to exploit the resulting improvements in current and future hardware. New tools are required to capitalise on this new class of optimisation. This thesis investigates the field of energy-aware performance engineering. It begins by examining the current state of the art, which is characterised by ad-hoc techniques and a lack of standardised metrics. Work in this thesis addresses these deficiencies and lays stable foundations for others to build on. The first contribution made includes a set of criteria which define the properties that energy-aware optimisation metrics should exhibit. These criteria show that current metrics cannot meaningfully assess the utility of code or correctly guide its optimisation. New metrics are proposed to address these issues, and theoretical and empirical proofs of their advantages are given. This thesis then presents the Power Optimised Software Envelope (POSE) model, which allows developers to assess whether power optimisation is worth pursuing for their applications. POSE is used to study the optimisation characteristics of codes from the Mantevo mini-application suite running on a Haswell-based cluster. The results obtained show that of these codes TeaLeaf has the most scope for power optimisation while PathFinder has the least. Finally, POSE modelling techniques are extended to evaluate the system-wide scope for energy-aware performance optimisation. System Summary POSE allows developers to assess the scope a system has for energy-aware software optimisation independent of the code being run.

Abstract:
Increasing interest is being shown in performance measurement, in both the academic literature and by practitioners. When implementing innovative products, organisations are facing issues of how to measure and manage the performance of the products concerned and how to do so in a worthwhile way. Reviewing existing literature suggests that there has been limited research on the value of performance measurement and management processes and indeed little conceptual distinction has been made between performance measurement and performance management. A conceptual framework is developed, structured around concepts from the existing literature showing two ways of distinguishing performance measurement and performance management. Performance management processes are shown as broader than performance measurement processes and the influences of the processes on performance are also displayed, another way of differentiating between the two concepts. The framework provides a structure for a pattern matching analysis using empirical data. Empirical data collection involved four case studies, each focusing on a medical device being implemented in the UK public healthcare sector. Forty-six semi-structured interviews explored performance measurement and performance management processes in the implementation of the innovative products, as well as exploring the influences of those processes on performance of the innovative products. The findings from the thesis highlight key performance measurement and performance management processes that occur in the implementation of innovative products, finding that the two can best be distinguished by their influence, or lack of influence, on performance. Performance reporting is also highlighted as a key concept. The findings indicate that performance measurement and reporting processes alone cannot be expected to have an influence on performance, however if performance management processes occur too then they can.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Busines Administration))--Cape Technikon, 1999.
The purpose of this research is to answer the following fundamental question: "Is the performance bonus approach a viable alternative methodology for implementing a Performance Management and Development intervention in South African companies? " The intention is to use the performance bonus as an entry vehicle for the establishment of a fully functional performance management and development system. The introduction of a performance based bonus system is intended to instill the recognition of "the pay for performance" concept as opposed to one of entitlement. What is expected is that a culture of performance will develop encompassing standards of work performance, goal orientation and a level of individual responsibility for recognition and reward. Understanding and acceptance of the performance bonus will create a platform for the introduction of further levels of remuneration, being increases and finally basic salary becoming performance based. Furthermore, this will allow the development of the further necessary levels of a fully functional integrated performance management and development system. This would entail the inclusion of management levels within the system as well as operational levels (departments, divisions and regions) and finally the organisational level thereby linking all aspects of the system to overall strategy.

Abstract:
The facile synthesis of engineering thermoplastics enabled the development of structure-morphology-property relationships for a wide range of applications. Utilizing step-growth polymerization techniques, a myriad of reaction conditions probed various polymer families including polysulfones, polyesters, polyimides and polyureas. Copolymers ranging from random to segmented sequences provided insight into the influence of segment length on physical properties. Melting temperatures, glass transition temperatures, and mechanical properties responded systematically to segment length and morphology. Leveraging several complementary analytical techniques identified critical segment lengths required for phase separation and crystallization within these copolymers. Introduction of hydrogen bonding further complicated the interrelationships between thermal and mechanical properties, and possible co-crystallization between dissimilar segments occurred. Finally, branching out from linear copolymers to other topologies determined the influence of branch length on rheological and mechanical properties. The commercially-viable synthesis of these various thermoplastics further highlights the immediate impact on state-of-the-art materials, and the fundamental development described herein provides a road map for future development in this field.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The music performance-based research delivered within this portfolio has been realised within my current role as Bandmaster of Enfield Citadel Band of The Salvation Army. The overall thrust of this research has been focused on, and driven by my desire for the revitalisation within the functionality and relevance of Salvation Army band music. Revitalisation is achieved through studying historic works written by composers such as Elgar Howarth, Leslie Condon and Ray Steadman-Allen. All three composers in their time showed innovation in utilising contemporary composition techniques within their music. The presentation of significant historic works with innovative premieres incorporating the unique and precedent-setting use of media, collaborations and mainstream twentieth century compositional techniques allow me to place this research in a context of revitalising the functionality and relevance of Salvation Army band music. Embodied within this portfolio will be found materials, resources and written critical commentary of over 20000 words relating to the work I have completed towards a Doctor of Philosophy in Performance, at the University of Salford. Five significant projects are presented here and, in each, my practice has sought to address a particular, over-arching research question: can a conductor and Salvation Army Bandmaster manage the balance of artistic excellence and innovation whilst adhering to religious form in performance? This work will have a wider impact and will be of relevance to a conductor of a musical group, which has a fundamental reason over and above musical artistry for its existence for instance Church musicians and Military musicians. Can they achieve artistic excellence and innovation as well as conforming to their vernacular, ecclesiastical or ceremonial expectations? This calls into discussion the functionality of Salvation Army brass band music and its current relevance within the Salvation Army services and to wider audiences. Through various conducting and recording opportunities undertaken during this course of study, I have examined the way in which my leadership has impacted on collaborating composers, audiences, performers, soloists and the ministry and relevance of Enfield Citadel Band’s work within both Worship and concert settings. Research arising from my visits to personal libraries and archives have allowed me to chart the historical development of the established Salvation Army band. I have consistently stressed the conflict, which I have to overcome within this research, which centres around balancing the dichotomy of artistic merit whilst conforming to a required religious form and the practises and functionality of Salvation Army music. This work examines historical repertoire that has been represented either in live performance or recording by the Enfield Citadel Salvation Army band along with newly commissioned and previously unrecorded compositions by leading contemporary composers for both Salvation Army and contesting bands such as Dorothy Gates, Roger Trigg and Elgar Howarth.

Abstract:
What are the next steps to continue the growth and appreciation of the euphonium as a solo instrument? The instrument now occupies a prestigious role in the brass band and its influence in the wind band continues to rise. Yet, in the orchestral realm, it continues to not gain traction. This DMA portfolio contains some of the most substantial works and projects that aim to propel the euphonium into the coveted orchestral sphere. By elevating the instrument to the solo role with the symphony orchestra, the euphonium gains credibility and greater respect in a new area of performance. The orchestral realm has remained mostly untouched for the euphonium save a few choice moments in The Planets by Gustav Holst and Don Quixote and Ein Heldenleben by Richard Strauss. The history of the instrument and its limited repertoire provide an insight into why the projects contained in this portfolio represent groundbreaking endeavors. There is an undeniably strong dedication to expanding the role of the euphonium as a viable solo instrument with symphony orchestra. In this path, I produced two commercially available recordings that feature a world class orchestra, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, with a repertoire encompassing wonderful transcriptions, primarily made by the writer and major new commissions. Another priority of substantiating the euphonium as a soloist involves presenting the instrument in a variety of settings and repertoire. This has been accomplished by placing the commercial recordings on different labels, Naxos and MSR Classics, as well as presenting a wide range of repertoire. Featuring all original compositions for the instrument connects with one area of listeners with the Majestic Journey recording while an array of instrumental transcriptions yields inroads with another portion of audiences on the Taking Flight recording. I commissioned two new concerti by Allen Feinstein and Tim Jansa. Both are written in a strong tonal language with great programmatic features to further add notoriety. The final project, The Operatic Euphonium, includes a variety of vocal and operatic transcriptions to share the voice of the euphonium with another audience segment. The euphonium now has the opportunity to be experienced and shared with many different avenues within the classical music genre. The primary objective of these projects is to not only promote the euphonium, but also to serve as reference materials for future students and as a guide to help create more opportunities for the instrument. This will be accomplished by the creation of reference recordings, arrangements for euphonium and orchestra, and piano reductions of these works.

Abstract:
This DMA portfolio contains materials and a written critical commentary relating to the work I have completed towards a Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance degree at the University of Salford. My doctoral programme consists of four performance-based projects and some public performances: 1. CD recording: Chinese traditional piano music (recorded in Salford); 2. Public piano recital in Peel Hall, University of Salford; 3. Lecture at the University of Salford; 4. Cross-disciplinary concert performance and recording (Wuhan); 5. Public concert performances; 6. Supporting material. The portfolio itself contains the following: • A written commentary explaining the history and significance of Chinese traditional piano music, and the background about the projects that I undertook for the doctoral programme. • Video and Audio recordings of public performances and concerts, early recordings • Concert and recital programmes of public performances • News and interviews of the public performances • The published Articles and reviews published in newspapers, journals and online • Magazines and news of interviews, documentary • Awards • Supporting material showing my professional standing and significant past and current activity as an internationally recognised concert pianist and educator with a specialist interest in bridging Eastern and Western cultures. The portfolio illustrates various roles in which I have been an ambassador for Chinese traditional piano music, which I explore and develop in the context of western society. I have been involved on a number of levels, from soloist performer, recording artist and collaborator with other artists in different fields, researcher and author, through to devising and writing concert programme notes and producing recital and concerts. It is in these ways that the work captured in this portfolio represents a significant addition to existing knowledge, commensurate with the Doctor of Musical Arts awards.

Abstract:
This DMA portfolio contains materials and a written critical commentary relating to the work I have completed towards a Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance degree at the University of Salford. The concept behind this study is born of a concern that the euphonium can be seen as culturally ‘standing still’, an instrument featured within traditional band concerts, with an important historical yet limited repertoire, and one that has successfully carved only a few further artistic outlets. Often new solo works can be heavily influenced by the tradition of the virtuoso euphonium soloist, sometimes using identical templates and compositional forms of popular works from the past. This research is an exploration of how the euphonium as a solo instrument can be presented in new and varied musical environments, moving it away from the shackles of tradition and towards a broader musical plane. I also hope this approach can potentially create more varied performance opportunities which attract a wider range of listeners. The work explores repertoire that is innovative within the euphonium’s natural musical habitats, as well as repertoire that frames the instrument in surroundings it is rarely associated with. This is presented through commissions, adaptations of existing repertoire, premières and commercial recordings. The work also endeavours to ensure that the new repertoire output is widely available and accessible for euphonium players worldwide by working with a music publisher with international reputation, marketing and distribution facilities. This submission adds significant new works to the substantially limited solo repertoire of the euphonium and explores new areas of artistic output, which I hope other performers and composers will be able develop after this study period is over.

This doctoral research titled Word-Performance has been developed out of the following areas: contemporary research on literature and performance. The dialogue between these two fields of analysis has proven to be exciting and promising, given that interdisciplinary research offers an unusual character to the literary. Many literary theorists use the word performance, or performative and performativity, as a concept to indicate the conduct, performance and behavior of certain literary, social, political forms. However, the performance here is first proposed as an investment to the availability of other spaces to what we call literature and therefore allow it to be understood, read and also developed via other theoretical methods. In this sense, from the relationship between the theory of literature and the other arts, because the performance is configured on the border between the performing, the visual and literary arts, has sought not only a dialogue with various theoretical contributions, but also provide another understanding of the literary text to the community academic as well as readers. Actually, a few years ago, even before the advent of technology, the literary text has reinvented itself through other media. In fact, what this study seeks to demonstrate is that the performance itself was always permitted to the reader, since the literature provokes more than just knowing something, it encourages us to go beyond the text itself, whether through singular marks in the course of reading, through the desire of understanding and responding to what is written, or by our own artistic action that comes from it. From this relationship a vast field of literary research and analysis is drawn, from which this thesis has been engaged in presenting a significant and qualified approach to contemporary research on literature. Beyond the complex and exciting contact with other arts, literature has much to reveal to researchers and readers.
A palavra escapa.
