Abstract:
Jhum is a customary farming which is very important for the livelihood of the alpine people of Bangladesh. Total productivity of the traditional practice of jhum cultivation is very low. The study was conducted to identify the yield gap between improved and local practices in Bandarban district of Bangladesh during March to September; 2017.The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with ten replications. Improved jhum practice produced the higher yields of rice (3113kg/ha), seed cotton (456 kg/ha), sesame (478 kg/ha) and maize (627 kg/ha) than traditional local jhum. Rice Equivalent Yield (REY) was also higher (40.23%) in improved jhum (6786.8kg/ha) than local jhum (4339.8 kg/ha). Improved jhum’s rate of returns (2.15) was higher than traditional jhum’s rate of returns (1.56). Improved practice in jhum cultivation increased yield and it was economically profitable over traditional practice.J. Bangladesh Agril. Univ. 16(2): 193-197, August 2018

Abstract:
AbstractObjectiveTo determine the impact of an implementation intervention designed to introduce policies and practices supportive of healthy eating in centre-based child-care services. Intervention strategies included staff training, resources, incentives, follow-up support, and performance monitoring and feedback.DesignA quasi-experimental design was used to assess change over 20 months in healthy eating policy and practice in intervention and comparison child-care services.SettingThe Hunter New England (HNE) region of New South Wales (NSW), Australia.SubjectsAll centre-based child-care services (n 287) in the intervention region (HNE) were invited and 240 (91 % response rate) participated. Two hundred and ninety-six services in the rest of NSW were randomly selected as a comparison region and 191 participated (76 % response rate). A sub-analysis was conducted on those services that provided children food (n 196 at baseline and n 190 at follow-up). Ninety-six provided menus for analysis at baseline (HNE, n 36; NSW, n 50) and 102 provided menus at follow-up (HNE, n 50; NSW, n 52).ResultsServices in the intervention region were significantly more likely to provide only plain milk and water for children (P = 0·018) and to engage parents in nutrition policy or programmes (P = 0·002). They were also more likely (P = 0·056) to have nutrition policy on home packed food. In addition, menus of services that provided lunch were significantly more likely to comply with healthy eating guidelines for sweetened drinks (P < 0·001), fruit (P < 0·001) and vegetables (P = 0·01).ConclusionsAn implementation intervention was able to modify policy and practice in a large number of child-care services so that they were more supportive of healthy eating.

Abstract:
Internal public relations are used to control the relationship between the organization and its employees. The paper explored whether and how internal public relations stimulate employees’ life satisfaction and job performance. The conceptual framework was built to link internal social media, perceived organizational transparency (POT), organizational identification, employee engagement, life satisfaction, and job performance. Using the hierarchical component model with employee engagement measured by job engagement and organizational engagement is a nascent point from this study. A mass survey was distributed to employees working in the aviation industry in southern Vietnam. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was used to analyze primary data from 193 valid respondents. It reveals that POT, internal social media, and organizational identification significantly positively impact employee engagement. It shows that employee engagement has significantly positive impacts on life satisfaction and job performance. It indicates that both organizational identification and POT are partial mediators intervening in the strong relationship between employee engagement and internal social media. It also indicates that life satisfaction is a partial mediator intervening the positive linkage between employee engagement and job performance. Practical implications and theoretical contributions were suggested for using internal public relations to enhance employees’ life satisfaction, and job performance. BackgroundElectronic media are playing a negative role in people’s lives and yet people are unaware of the hazardous effect.AimTo show that screen-time of >1 hour had detrimental associations with school performance.MethodA population-based, cross-sectional survey of 363 students, mean age 14.2 years (grades 5–8), from both government and private-sector schools in Karachi was conducted. A total of 363 students (210 males [57.9%] and 153 females [42.1%]) were included in the study. Of these students, 193 (53.2%) belonged to government schools and 173 (46.8%) to private schools. A questionnaire form was filled in. Weekday, weekend television, and video game screen-time was looked at. The main outcome was self-report of school performance (grades A, B, and C). Ordinal logistic regression analysis was used to test the independent effects of each variable, adjusting for demographics, child personality, and parenting style.ResultsTelevision content measurement showed that 69 (19%) students watched sports channels regularly while 30 (8.3%) and 3 (0.8%) watched educational and action programmes, respectively. The viewers of entertainment TV programmes (268 [73.8%]) and news programmes (159 [43.8%]) were in the majority. In terms of school grades, 154 students (42.4%) attained grade A, 180 students (49.6%) scored grade B, and 29 (8%) obtained grade C. Data showed no association between increased screen-time of ≤1 hour (weekdays as well as weekends) with poor school performance (P=0.46 and P=0.58, respectively).ConclusionScreen-time of ≤1 hour does not have any detrimental associations with poor school performance.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the application of total reward practices in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the South-Eastern European (SEE) region and the reward elements positively affecting organisational performance. Design/methodology/approach The sample consists of 199 SMEs operating in SEE countries which are either under economic crisis or transition: Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Albania, Kosovo and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Findings SMEs in the SEE region are implementing a total rewards model which is characterised by a weaker application of individual aspects and by a stronger application of transactional, relational and communal aspects. Within the communal aspects of the model, the study found three elements of the work environment that positively affect organisational performance; work-life balance, employee involvement voice mechanisms, and organisational culture supporting personal and professional development. Practical implications The study contributes to HR practice; the authors found that a better work environment is positively related to improved organisational performance in these SMEs. This means that in times of economic crisis or transition when HR budgets are limited such non-financial strategies can be a viable alternative to costly financial rewards to such organisations. Originality/value The study contributes to both theory and HR practice by shedding light on how employee rewards are affected in economies under crisis and transition, how SMEs can motivate their employees when faced with significant financial limitations, as well as explores which reward elements can lead to enhanced organisational performance in such organisations.

Abstract:
This study examined whether providing verbal instructions plus demonstration and task repetition facilitates the early acquisition of a sport skill for which learners had a prior knowledge of the individual motor components. After one demonstration of the task by an expert, 18 novice skaters practiced a figure skating jump during a 15-min. period. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of 3 groups: a group provided with a verbal instruction that specified the subgoals of the task (Subgoals group), a group provided with a verbal instruction that used a metaphor (Metaphoric group), and a group not receiving any specific instruction during training (Control group). Subjects were filmed prior to and immediately following the practice session. Analysis indicated that the modifications of performance were related to the demonstration and the subsequent task repetitions only. Providing additional verbal instructions generated no effect. Therefore, guiding the learner toward a solution to the task problem by means of verbal instruction seems to be ineffective if done too early in the course of learning.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop a resource-based framework to explain the relationship between high-performance work system (HPWS) and organizational performance (OP) and the moderating role of performance measures. Design/methodology/approach The paper takes a meta-analysis approach, and tests hypotheses against data of 47,741 firms and establishments in 192 studies published by June 2016. Findings The paper finds that HPWS has a greater positive effect on operational than financial performance. Moreover, HPWS influences operational performance more strongly in developing than advanced countries and at the firm level than the establishment level, but such variations are not evident in the effect of HPWS on financial performance. Practical implications The paper suggests that managers should treat human resource management (HRM) practices as a system, and develop HPWS for operational gains which in turn lead to financial gains. Managers need to take different approaches to develop HPWS for high performance depending on the country of origin and the level of organization. Originality/value Based on studies of individual HRM practices, previous meta-analytical studies suggested that the HPWS-OP relationship is invariant across performance measures. Taking HRM practices as integral components of HPWS, this paper extends the resource-based theory to demonstrate that performance measures interact with country of origin and level of analysis to moderate the HPWS-OP relationship.

Abstract:
The main goal of the study was to examine or investigate the impact of strategic management practices on the growth of SMEs in Ghana. Purposive sampling technique was employed to sample 190 SMEs in Accra, though 150 SMEs responded to the questionnaire. With the help of SPSS version 22, Multiple regression analysis was conducted to assess the impact of strategic management practices on the performance and hence growth of SMEs in Ghana. The study revealed a significant positive relationship between strategy formulation and growth of SMEs in Ghana. The study also found a significant positive relationship between strategy implementation and the growth of SMEs in Ghana, but found a negative relationship between strategy evaluation and growth of SMEs in Ghana. However, overall, the study found a positive relationship between effective and efficient application of strategic management practices and the growth of SMEs in Ghana. As a contribution to policy and practice, the study recommended among others that policy makers, managers and owners of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) should employ strategic management experts especially in the field of strategy evaluation to enhance the quality of their strategy evaluation process so as to positively influence the performance and growth of SMEs.

Abstract:
Tourism is one of the most important sectors in the development process in the country of Indonesia. Cultural tourism development in various regions has led to cultural commercialization practices. Cultural commercialization includes the reconstruction of art and traditions and the practice of everyday life into stage performances that can be enjoyed by tourists. Gintungan Hamlet is one of the hamlets located at the of Mount Ungaran. In this hamlet there is a spring (pennant). The spring has until now become the center of the bedah blumbang ritual. Bedah blumbang that has been going on for decades has inevitably experienced various changes. These changes include changes in the procedures for implementing, completing ceremonies, and involving the community. At the stage of the procession, the tradition of blumbang surgery has become a place for cash exchange market activities with bazaar performances. The commodification of tourism in this blunt surgical tradition has a negative and positive impact. The negative impact is that there are various fundamental changes in its implementation, especially in determining the timing of implementation. The positive impact is that tourism development is also accompanied by infrastructure development that can be used widely by the people of Gintungan Hamlet, the opening of information from inside and outside the hamlet, and revitalizing the tradition of blunt surgery. this research uses ethnographic methods

Abstract:
This investigation examined the generalizability of contextual interference to learning the cartwheel in gymnastics. 32 participants ages 17 to 26 years completed five stages of practice of two versions of the skill, one in which the left hand led and one in which the right hand led, providing a total of 192 practice trials. Practice of these two versions of the task was completed in either a blocked or alternating order. Tests of retention and transfer were completed 20 min. and 1 wk. after acquisition. Outcome (errors) and form scores were derived from participants' performance. Alternating practice resulted in poorer acquisition, retention, and transfer performance as measured by outcome scores. The contextual interference effect did not generalize to this task, a finding which is attributed to task complexity and the interference associated with practicing the two tasks together.

Abstract:
Abstract There are different methods for growing and finishing lambs and kids. A high percentage of lambs are finished on concentrate diets. At the same time, there is a growing demand for grass-fed meat. Grass-fed meat usually has a more healthful fatty acid profile. The gains obtained on pasture are often more economical. However, there are also challenges to raising lambs and kids on pasture. Performance (ADG and BCS) can be poor, due to seasonal fluctuations in pasture quality (and quantify), poor grazing practices, and heavy burdens of gastro-intestinal parasites (worms). Raising lambs and kids profitably on pasture requires strategies that provide excellent nutrition and minimize the impact of parasites, while meeting the desires of today’s consumers.

Abstract:
BackgroundInterventions aimed at improving GPs’ prescribing practice usually apply a 'one size fits all' when analysing intervention effects. Few studies explore intervention effects by variables related to the GPs’ age, sex, specialist status, practice type (single-handed versus group), practice setting (urban versus rural), and baseline performance regarding the target of an intervention.AimTo explore the characteristics of the GPs responding to a comprehensive educational intervention.Design & settingA secondary analysis of a cluster, randomised educational intervention in Norwegian general practice. Pre-intervention data were captured from January 2005 to December 2005, and post-intervention data from June 2006 to June 2007. The intervention was carried out from January to June 2006.MethodEighty continuing medical education (CME) groups, including 449 GPs aged 27–68 years, were randomly allocated to either an education intervention arm (41 groups, 250 GPs) or a control arm (39 groups, 199 GPs). The primary outcome was GPs' change in potentially inappropriate prescriptions (PIPs) per 100 prescriptions issued to patients aged ≥70 years. The interaction between intervention outcome and variables related to the GPs and their practices were tested.ResultsImprovements in prescribing were highest among GPs aged 57–68 years (incidence rate ratio [IRR] = 0.77 [95% confidence interval {CI} = 0.73 to 0.81]), those who were specialists (IRR = 0.80 [95% CI = 0.78 to 0.82]), and those who worked in single-handed practices (IRR = 0.75 [95% CI = 0.68 to 0.83]), among GPs with 2.4 to 2.9 PIPs per 100 prescriptions at baseline (IRR = 0.74 [95% CI = 0.70 to 0.78]), and GPs with ≥15 prescriptions per patient per year at baseline (IRR = 0.77 [95% CI = 0.73 to 0.80]).ConclusionThe GPs with the lowest adherence to recommended practice at baseline improved their practice most.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand the characteristics of the current asset management (AM) practices across the Saudi public sector (SPS). Design/methodology/approach The study uses a mixture of inductive and deductive logic, including, at the outset, developing a framework tool to assess the SPS using thematic analysis. The framework is based on seven well-known international AM standards and guidelines. Later, a structured interview with 196 items is used to capture characteristics of SPS AM practices. Univariate and interpretive analyses were performed. Findings AM practices across the SPS are characterised by the following: in the majority of ministries, practices are below expectations; performance indicators are unrealistic and incomprehensive; public servants lack awareness of AM practices; the majority of the public sector overlooks the existence of professional standards; policies are not consistent across the sector; and finally, there is an over-reliance on public servants’ experience. Research limitations/implications Policy implications – current AM practices across the SPS need to be established, in particular by introducing policies and professional standards. Originality/value Physical assets are vital resources for organisations and, in turn, countries. There are no extant studies about AM practices across the SPS, and thus the evident need for such studies to develop current SPS knowledge, particularly given the notable increase in the country’s physical assets since its emergence and the formal AM practice development worldwide.

Objectives of the study: knowledge of the students of the Sports High School; the appreciation of the differences that do not arise between the nutrition of the students from the sport profile and the theoretical ones; reporting students’ nutrition to rational nutrition standards. Nutrition is an external factor that contributes to the development of children and young people and to optimizing the motor performance of students who practice performance sports. Material and method. Тhe study was conducted on a group of 122 students from a Sports Highschool where there were sports classes and theoretical classes. Students completed a weekly frequency questionnaire on food consumption. Results. The morning meal intake is present daily at 36.36% of young people with significant differences in favor of those from the sports program. The taste is the daily presence in 42,62% of pupils with insignificant differences depending on the profile. The weekly intake of chicken meat is mostly 2–3 times (46.28%) and the eggs still 2–3 times (38.01%) with insignificant differences. Dried vegetables are present in menus, especially 1/week (43.80%) and daily bread (52.89%). Conclusions. Nutrition is not adapted to the increased needs of students who practice sports performance, which is worrying.

Abstract:
190 Background: Practice-pattern data, evidence-based knowledge and transfer, and performance management strategies define Cancer Care Ontario’s quality improvement strategy. Knowledge products, such as practice guidelines, are intended to provide recommendations for practice, based on best available evidence, to improve quality of care and reduce variation in practice. Review of 2010-2011 Cancer System Quality Index (CSQI) data revealed complex practice patterns in treatment of non-small cell lung cancer patients with stages II and IIIa resected and stages IIIa and IIIb non-resected disease in Ontario. A multi-method study was initiated to understand the patterns, to identify if a quality of care problem exists and to propose improvements moving forward. Methods: Surgeons, medical oncologists and radiation oncologists from Ontario were invited to participate in a survey consisting of 6 areas of inquiry. A grounded theory approach was used to guide key informant interviews of purposively sampled clinicians and administrators. A more in-depth analysis of the CSQI data was planned. Results: Clinicians responding to survey provided positive assessments of PG recommendations and evidentiary base; perceptions of practice patterns were less problematic than hypothesized; estimates of benchmarks were highly variable; and assessments of barriers to recommendation implementation included slow referral process, lack of organization support and patients seen in practice not reflected in the evidence. From the interviews, 5 themes emerged: unique patient, unique physician, family, clinical team, and clinical evidence. Further analysis of CSQI data was not possible given limitations related to data collection. Conclusions: A perceived quality of care problem initiated this study. Concerns centred on significant proportion of patients receiving no treatment; modest percentage of patients receiving treatment that aligned with PG recommendations; and regional variation within each of the clinical care options. Our data show that defining a quality of care problem is significantly more complex than consideration of practice patterns alone.

Research aim: This study aims to measure the extent and the determinants of voluntary graphics disclosure in Laporan Keuangan Pemerintah Daerah (LKPD) or Local Government Financial Statements in Indonesia. Design/ Methodology/ Approach: This study used 197 audited LKPD in Indonesia, comprising 155 regency governments and 32 district governments. The financial statements of these 197 local governments were examined to measure the extent of voluntary graphics disclosure and investigate the potential determinants of voluntary graphics disclosure. This study used multiple regression analysis to examine the determinants (performance, level of dependency, location, education background, and competency) of voluntary graphics disclosures. Research findings: The results indicate a low extent of voluntary graphics disclosure in the LKPD in Indonesia. The average voluntary graphics disclosure rate is 44.88%, demonstrating a lack of usage of voluntary graphics disclosure. The results also indicate that only performance has an insignificant effect on the extent of voluntary graphics disclosure. Practitioner/ Policy implication: The findings regarding voluntary graphics disclosure in LKPD should be of concern to regulatory authorities and standard setters in Indonesia. Research limitation: This study focuses on measuring the extent and the determinants of voluntary graphics disclosure practices among 197 local governments in Indonesia. Hence, the sample of this study is limited to the local governments employing graphics in providing information in their financial statements for the year 2015.

Abstract:
High school singers ( N=198) individually sang two melodies from notation, with and without a 30-second practice opportunity. Overall accuracy scores were significantly higher with preparation time. The less accurate singers, however, did not benefit from practice time. Analysis of videoed tests indicated that high scorers tonicized (vocally established the key), used hand signs, sang out loud during practice, physically kept the beat, and finished practicing the melody within 30 seconds significantly more frequently than did low scorers during practice. Similar strategies were used during performance, with the addition of tonicizing before singing. Sight-singing system used made no significant difference. Characteristics appearing significantly more often among high scorers included: region/state choir, private voice or piano lessons, playing an instrument, membership in instrumental ensemble, sight-singing individually outside class, and director giving individual sight-singing tests. Results are discussed in terms of strategies for teaching individual sight-singing and recommended areas of future research. August 11, 2004 January 18, 2005.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze to what extent and under which conditions R&D projects benefit from team members’ participation in spontaneous and work-related communities of practice (CoPs). Design/methodology/approach This is a quantitative empirical study. R&D projects are the unit of analysis. Data are collected through interviews to 121 informants who are members of 60 R&D projects and participants in 195 CoPs. Findings The participation of project team members in work-related CoPs positively affects the R&D project performance. This positive effect applies also to radically innovative projects. The diversity in the institutional affiliation of CoPs members is also highly significant and positively correlated with the project performance. Research limitations/implications The paper considers only work-related CoPs, thus neglecting the knowledge transacted through other types of CoPs. Practical implications Practitioners should support the autonomous participation of project team members to spontaneous and work-related CoPs that cut across the organizational boundaries. Team leaders may enhance team innovative capabilities and performance by ensuring diversity of knowledge and skills from CoPs whose members work for institutions that differ from each other. Originality/value First, this study provides quantitative evidence of the CoPs ability to support innovation. Second, this research is focused on spontaneous and work-related CoPs within business environments. Third, this study does not analyze CoPs performance, but it postulates a connection between innovative organizational units (i.e. R&D projects) and spontaneous CoPs that cut across the firms’ boundaries.

With increasing social awareness on the issue of corporate social performance (CSP), the measurement of CSP has received considerable attention in both academic literature and managerial practice. Though earlier literature provides several methods for measuring corporate social activities, almost all of them have some limitations. In this paper, we propose a methodology for the development of a systematic measure of CSP based on fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (FAHP). In addition, a preliminary investigation is presented to explain how the approach can help in evaluating CSP in practice.

Abstract:
Conventional wisdom identifies human capital and organizational reputation as the critical resources explaining professional partnership (PP) performance. PPs have increasingly adopted organizational practices like strategic planning and formal governance, however, which have long been alien in highly professionalized contexts. In order to test the influence of both these classic resources and the newly adopted practices on PP performance, as well as the mediating mechanisms— that is, client attraction and retention as well as organizational efficiency—through which this influence is channeled, we develop an integrated theoretical framework of PP performance. We test the resulting hypotheses using survey and objective data collected on 196 Dutch law firms. Our findings provide new insights into the drivers of PP performance and the complex interrelationships between PP resources and newly adopted practices.

Abstract:
This research examined characteristics of a select group of tonal patterns to identify features that may affect the initial acquisition of skill in sight-singing pitch. Second graders ( N = 193) individually read and sang 25 tonal patterns on a sight-singing pretest, posttest, and retention test. Between the pre- and posttest, the students practiced 15 of the patterns during general music classes, with one new pattern introduced and all previously presented patterns reviewed each session.Ten patterns not included in the instruction were read and sung only during tests. No pattern practice occurred for 8 weeks between the posttest and retention test. Sight-singing performance was assessed for pitch accuracy and contour accuracy. Pattern difficulty indices and difficulty rankings were determined on the basis of the results. Specific pattern features are considered in relation to these data, with some characteristics affecting accuracy with pitch and contour differently.

This study aims to explore the relationship between transformational leadership (TFL), transactional leadership (TSL) styles, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices. The study explains the role of leadership styles between CSR and organizational performance (OP) to investigate the influence of leadership styles over CSR practices this study is the first of its kind in the Asian perspective and Pakistan in particular. Self-administered questionnaires are used to conduct this large-scale field study, data is collected from major cities of Pakistan. Questionnaires are filled by executive managers and administrative staff. Purposive sampling technique is adopted to approach the respondents. Obtained results prove that TFL is more closely interlinked to CSR practices and this relationship becomes robust with the involvement of stakeholder-oriented marketing. Moreover, findings suggest that TSL increases while the TFL decreases the relationship between CSR practices and OP.

Abstract:
55 Background: More than 600 practices have participated in ASCO’s QOPI since 2006. 192 have achieved certification through the QOPI Certification Program (QCP) since 2010. QOPI assesses greater than 150 performance metrics, organized into modules; QCP evaluates 20 chemotherapy-related standards. QI efforts resulting from QOPI/QCP participation have not been assessed, e.g. which measure areas or standards are preferentially selected by practices for local QI projects. Methods: A survey was sent to 1,450 participants at 850 practices to assess which measure modules/standards were selected by QOPI/QCP participants as the basis for local QI efforts and to understand the nature of the improvement initiatives. Results: 89 participants responded. 96% (85/89) respondents reported QOPI/QCP led to QI efforts. Respondents were asked to select module/s that spurred subsequent QI activities: core measures (57%; n=45), symptom/toxicity management (48%; n=38), end-of-life care (38%; n=29), breast cancer (13%; n=10), colorectal cancer (10%; n=8), NHL (6%; n=5) and NSCLC (4%; n=3). Related to the QCP structural safety standards, participants reported QI projects as follows: chemotherapy planning/chart documentation (39%; n=31), general chemotherapy standards (30%; n=24), monitoring and assessment (29%; n=23), chemotherapy administration (27%; n=21), chemotherapy orders (23%; n=18), staffing (16%; n=13), drug preparation (9%; n=7). Practices reported that QOPI measures improved in subsequent rounds as a result of specific projects (n=22/25, or 88%); 100% felt that these QI projects impacted their practices for the better. QI project results were presented primarily in practice meetings (74%; n=26), hospital or community forums (17%; n=6), ASCO Quality Symposium or other meeting (9%; n=3). No projects reached publication. Of note, 17 of 31 respondents who reported practice status indicated achieving QOPI certification. Conclusions: QOPI participants select improvement targets throughout QOPI modules and standards. QOPI and QCP have succeeded in spurring local QI efforts that have led to score improvements, increased discussion of quality and standards, and a positive impact on practices.

Abstract:
This research paper examines the effect of three factors of green supply chain (GSC) practices on organizational performance in the perspective of Pakistani FMCG companies. A sample of 191 companies was collected from the FMCG industry. The GSC practices were measured by three independent variables including green transportation, green distribution and green purchasing. By using exploratory factor analysis and linear multiple regression, the findings show that except green purchasing rest of the two variables (green transportation and green distribution) have been found positive and significant to estimate organizational performance. Therefore, the managers and directors of the FMCG firms should adopt green practices in their distribution and transportation operations to enhance overall organizational performance. The key contribution of this study from theoretical side is that it is possible to sign a negative impact of green purchasing on organizational performance in the context of Pakistani FMCG industry.

Abstract:
In my 2015 editorial, I selected two research publications with a focus on an applied sports sciences perspective. This year I have chosen to focus on two publications from a methodological viewpoint, highlighting the importance of laboratory procedures and extraction of data through a systematic review respectively. The first publication by Leites and colleagues (J Appl Physiol) addresses questions in relation to thermoregulation and carbohydrate metabolism in young people. This topic is difficult to conduct due to additional ethical and safety concerns due to exercising in the heat. Nonetheless, there are important basic science questions to be answered. Using a range of measurement techniques including rectal thermometry, 13C-enriched carbohydrate isotopes and procedures to standardize the heat stress equally between a group of men and boys, this project demonstrates an exemplary range of experimental skills. In my second selected paper by Lesinski et al., (Brit J Sports Med), both a systematic review and a meta-analyses were conducted to investigate the dose-response relationships of resistance training on physical performance in youth athletes. As the requirement for more evidence based practice is demanded, the move away from a narrative review to a more methodological and rigorous approach is to be encouraged. It is, in my opinion, a skill that we should be encouraging all our early career pediatric researchers to learn from the outset, the outcome of which can only make our discipline stronger.

To correct a long-standing omission in the domain of sports, 198 collegiate baseball players were asked to describe briefly athletic play that many coaches label as either “heady,” “smart,” “intelligent.” or “ingenious.” The players were also asked to estimate the contribution of heredity to such performance. The results showed that 48% of these players characterized such performance as being automatic and lacking conscious mediation, while 52% said such performance was the result of conscious effort. Whether the performance was conscious or automatic (unconscious), over 97% of the players said that heredity was a minor contributor, while the major contributor was extensive practice and experience.

Abstract:
Outsourcing system development to international information technology vendors working in project teams can notably facilitate the successful implementation of client information system development (ISD) projects. Reward structures in such culturally different environments, however, are not well defined or understood. The authors examined the effects of team performance based reward structures on ISD project performance. A total of 194 responses were solicited, obtained, and analyzed. The results indicated that reward based on team performance can improve the level of task cohesion which in turn facilitates increased information utilization. Both task cohesion and information utilization enhance project performance. Directions for management practice and future research are discussed.

Abstract:
Context:Youth- through masters-level competitive swimmers incur significant shoulder pain. Risk factors associated with shoulder pain include high swimming yardage, a lack of cross-training, decreased shoulder strength and reduced core endurance, and limited posterior shoulder and pectoral length. Since training, swimming exposure, and physical-performance measures have all been associated with shoulder pain, the methods used to train swimmers may influence the development of shoulder pain, yet studies delineating training methods are lacking. Objectives:To identify in-water and dry-land practices among youth- through masters-level swimmers in the United States (US) and describe the potential effects of training practices on swimmers’ shoulders.Design:A Web-based survey was developed to identify common training practices in 5 areas: quantification of swimming and dry-land training and in-water techniques such as kicking drills, upper-body stretching, shoulder and core strengthening, and cross-training.Participants:156 swim-team coaches or captains of youth, high school, and college swim teams and 196 masters swimmers participated (N = 352). There was geographic representation from across the US.Results:Responses indicated diverse training practices. However, most respondents used kicking drills, which may provoke shoulder pain due to prolonged poor positioning. High yardage swum by high school and college teams increases their risk of shoulder tendinopathy. Stretching and strengthening exercises and dosages commonly used were inconsistent with current research recommendations and lacked specificity in terms of addressing typical mobility restrictions and muscle weaknesses described in the swimming literature. Core strengthening and cross-training are frequently performed. Conclusions:Several areas of in-water and dry-land practice were identified that may put swimmers’ shoulders at risk for injury. Further research regarding the safety and efficacy of training programs is recommended to determine optimal methods of injury prevention and performance enhancement.

Abstract:
Purpose – This study aims to analyse the environmental scanning and information sources used by Jordanian firms. Furthermore, the relationship between environmental scanning and organisational characteristics (firm size and industry type), as well as organisational performance, is explored. Design/methodology/approach – The empirical research was coordinated via a survey of 190 Jordanian publicly quoted firms. The results of the survey provided a rich source of data in relation to a variety of practices associated with environmental scanning in these firms. Findings – The findings of this study show that scanning focus was higher for the general environmental sectors than the task environmental sectors. The results also demonstrate that these firms rely more on internal sources of information. Larger firms have more scanning activities, while smaller firms tend to focus on different sources of information. Additionally, some differences in the industry sector in terms of scanning behaviour were identified. This study also supports the literature regarding the positive relationship between environment scanning and organisational performance by providing new empirical evidence from the context of Middle East countries. Originality/value – This paper provides empirical evidence on the nature and the practice of environmental scanning and its value for organisational performance in business firms in a Middle East context. From a theoretical perspective, this study engages in the “convergence versus divergence” debate regarding managers’ scanning behaviour around the world.

This research aims to investigate the students’ English competence, the highest percentage of students’ mistake and their difficulties in responding to the TOEFL structure and written expression sections. All of the 6th semester students of the English Education Study Program of Universitas Bengkulu who had passed all structure courses were involved in this research. The data were collected through a TOEFL test and an interview. The results show that majority of the students’ English competence was poor. It also reveals that the most difficult topic in grammar section was redundancy. There were two factors that affected the students’ performance in redundancy, ambiguity and the interference of first language. In contrast, gerund and infinitives were the easiest topic in grammar section. Simple rules and the most common expression were contributed to the students’ performance in gerund and infinitives. In responding to structure and written expression section there were four factors that influenced students’ difficulties, poor understanding of grammar, less focus, lack of practice and limited vocabulary.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to investigate the relationship between total quality management (TQM), service innovation and firm performance in the Pakistan’s service industry. An empirical survey was performed and there were 190 participants from financial service firms in Pakistan. Regression analysis was employed in this study to investigate the tri-dimensional relationship between TQM, service innovation and firm performance. In the context of financial firms, this research examines how TQM practices adopted and managed to boost service innovation and whether and how TQM practices is going to influence the firm performance through the mediating role of service innovation. A research framework and the related hypotheses are suggested. Direct and indirect impact of each construct of TQM practices on organizational performance was determined. Data analysis discloses that, extent of TQM implementation has a positive and significant influence on service innovation as well as on organizational performance. Furthermore, a positive but a weak relationship was observed between service innovation and organizational performance. The direct relationship between TQM and organizational performance outperforms the indirect relationship of service innovation and organizational performance. It has contributed in the sense that past researchers have not considered the tri-dimensional relationship between TQM, service innovation and firm performance.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the research and generalization of Boleslav Yavorskyi's musical-pedagogical ideas, a famous pedagogue with encyclopedic knowledge, an organizer of musical education, a pianist, a composer, a musicologist, a conductor, a scientist, an author of the fricative rhythm, a developer of the unique methodological conception of the creative development of a personality. The analysis of B. Yavorskyi's pedagogical activity allows us to understand the significance of his contribution into the theoretical and practical development of mass musical education, allows to broaden the understanding of his experimental studies on the methodological conception of the creative education of a personality, which should be taught through performing and understanding of a music and its perception. In the course of the research the assertion that the introduction of the subject «listening to music» into the practice by B. Yavorskyi became a fundamental process in his system of music education was actualized. According to the scientist, listening to music has a significant impact on the consciousness and behavior of a personality. In the research the author defined and generalized the pedagogical ideas of B. Yavorskyi, which were aimed at the development of thinking and creative abilities of children through: 1) obligatory participation of an any-profile musician in the choir performance; 2) introduction of the subject «Listening to music» into the practice of all educational music establishments;3) acquaintance with the phase-epoch before analysing of the music composition; 4) analysis of the influence of music on the emotional condition of the pupil; 5) intonation and remembering of the main melody of the composition; 6) reproduction of the composition in the drawings and paintings, in literary activity and stagings or dramatizing, using the method of Art Synthesis; 7) selection of the best compositions for listening and analysis; 8) development of speech culture when expressing verbally one’s own impressions of the music composition;9) creation of personal compositions: musical (songs, miniatures for the piano), plastic, painting (drawings), literary (poems, small prose works). There has been made a conclusion that audio, motor, spoken and musical associations are laid into the basis of musical-pedagogical conception of B. Yavorskyi and that the creative approach of the pedagog to the organization of the lessons and the active role of young people in the different genres of art promotes formation of their intellect, outlook, aesthetic and ethical qualities. Summing up, it should be said that musical-pedagogical education at the beginning. XX century was enriched greatly innovative pedagogical ideas of B. Yavorskyi, whose creative method became the basis for the development of the musical-educational upbringing of children and young people in different countries of the world in particular in the pedagogical activity of M. Leontovych, who was a student and follower of B. Yavorskyi.

Abstract:
The reported health problems of music performance students at two conservatoires in the UK were investigated, with specific attention to musculoskeletal and nonmusculoskeletal problems in relation to the students' instrumental specialty and their health-promoting behaviours. Students from the Royal Northern College of Music (n = 199) and the Royal College of Music (n = 74) were surveyed using server-based inventories over the internet. They provided 246 usable data sets for this study. Results reveal that musculoskeletal pain as well as nonmusculoskeletal problems were common among students, affecting about half of the sample, with similar patterns between groups of instruments. Regression analysis showed that musculoskeletal and nonmusculoskeletal symptoms reliably predicted perceived practice and performance quality, such that fewer symptoms predicted better quality; the strongest predictors were pain along the spine and fatigue. These results suggest that significant proportions of health problems among music performance students emerge from general dispositions, such as posture and fatigue, and thus are not specific to the instrument played. Healthy lifestyles appear not to affect perceived practice and performance quality.

Abstract:
This empirical study examines the relationship between total quality management (TQM) and service innovation as well as the relationship between service innovation and service quality in the Pakistans financial services industry. Most of the past research linked innovation performance with subjective performance of the firm. But, this study empirically evaluates the effect of innovation performance on firms judgmental performance (Service quality). There were 190 respondents from financial service firms in Pakistan. Multiple regression analysis was used to observe the connection between TQM, service innovation practices and service quality. A model is proposed based on theoretical considerations, connecting TQM constructs to the service innovation and to the service quality construct. The theoretical construct explains the connection among TQM practices, service innovation practices and service quality. The tri-dimensional relationship bridges the gap between TQM, service innovation and service quality and shows the importance of TQM in explaining the relationship between service innovation and service quality. This research also integrates the connection among TQM implementation, Service innovation practices and service quality. Data analysis shows that TQM implementation has a positive and significant impact on service innovation as well service quality. It has contributed in confirming that TQM practices deployed in a financial service firm in Pakistan has positive impact on service innovation and service quality.

Abstract:
18172 Background: NSCLC accounts for 80% of lung cancer cases and is commonly treated with taxanes. PPX is a phase III, biologically-enhanced, investigational, chemotherapeutic for treatment of NSCLC that links paclitaxel to a biodegradable polyglutamate polymer that potentially spares normal tissue exposure to chemotherapy toxicities. Methods: MRU data were collected as part of a multinational, randomized trial that compared PPX (n=191) to Gem or Vin (n=190) in chemotherapy-naïve advanced NSCLC patients with a performance status of 2. MRU and costs associated with chemotherapy administration and non-protocol-driven care were compared over the study period. Costs (2005 U.S. dollars) were assigned from a U.S. payer perspective. Results: Patient demographics were similar (p>0.05) between groups (mean age: 62 yrs, 72% male, 89% Caucasian). PPX had slightly longer median survival (220 vs. 198; p=0.686) with significantly fewer adverse events (all grades; 2.0 vs. 3.0; p=0.011) and significantly more chemotherapy cycles (3.4 vs. 3.9; p=0.007), per subject. Additionally, PPX had fewer outpatient visits (0.6 vs. 1.7; p<0.001), diagnostic tests (0.6 vs. 1.9; p<0.001), and days on non-chemotherapy medications (64.4 vs. 91.2; p<0.001), per subject. There was no significant difference in number of hospitalizations (0.04 in both groups; p=0.786), length of stay among those hospitalized (8.4 days PPX vs. 6.1 days Gem or Vin; p=0.301), or procedures (0.02 PPX vs. 0.04 Gem or Vin; p=0.238), per subject. Average costs per subject were significantly lower in PPX for outpatient visits ($34 vs. $78; p=0.014), non-chemotherapy medications ($717 vs. $911; p<0.001), and chemotherapy administration ($1,557 vs. $3,601; p<0.001) and similar for inpatient stays ($210 PPX vs. $244 Gen or Vin; p=0.794). Conclusions: This analysis suggests that, in addition to providing a clinical benefit of fewer adverse events, PPX results in reduced MRU and associated costs compared to Gem or Vin in treating NSCLC. These cost savings can be weighed against the cost of PPX and may provide a pharmacoeconomic advantage. Further research is warranted to confirm these results in routine clinical practice. Abstract:
Introduction: Patients with newly diagnosed AML are increasingly being enrolled on industry-sponsored clinical trials. These trials routinely exclude patients with Zubrod performance status (PS) >2, bilirubin >1.9 mg/dL, or creatinine >1.9 mg/dL; such patients are well-known to be relatively unlikely to respond (UTR). Here we quantify the effect of this practice on inclusion of UTR patients in clinical trials. Patients and Methods: Overall, 2323 adults with newly-diagnosed AML (no acute promyelocytic leukemia) were registered on clinical trials (industry-sponsored and other) from 1991–2006. Considering patients as UTR if they fulfilled any of the criteria noted above, we examined rates of enrollment of UTR patients over time: Results: Thus, while more patients are being enrolled on clinical trials, fewer UTR patients are being enrolled particularly over the last 5 years (p = .04) with a concomitant decrease in the proportion of such patients enrolled (p<.0001 over the 16 years in question). Findings are qualitatively the same in older patients. Conclusion: Newer clinical trials may be less applicable to UTR patients than previous trials. There is a need for clinical trials specific to the UTR population, the group most in need of novel therapies. Rates of enrollement of unlikely to respond patients on clinical trials for newly diangosed AML Year No. of pts. treated on clinical trial (pts. age≥60 yrs) UTR pts. enrolled (pts. age≥60 yrs) % of UTR pts. enrolled (pts. age ≥60 yrs) 1991 101 (50) 17 (13) 17 (26) 1992 100 (48) 20 (14) 20 (29) 1993 96 (46) 18 (9) 19 (20) 1994 109 (41) 23 (13) 21 (32) 1995 102 (48) 20 (10) 20 (21) 1996 104 (63) 14 (10) 13 (16) 1997 145 (81) 30 (20) 21 (25) 1998 124 (63) 14 (8) 11 (13) 1999 164 (86) 26 (16) 16 (19) 2000 169 (96) 25 (19) 15 (20) 2001 187 (98) 30 (19) 16 (19) 2002 162 (91) 17 (11) 10 (12) 2003 195 (111) 4 (2) 2 (2) 2004 184 (109) 17 (11) 9 (10) 2005 185 (117) 15 (7) 8 (6) 2006 196 (109) 17 (12) 9 (11) Total 2323 (1257) 307 (194) 13 (15)

Abstract:
The necessity of studying the stylistic features of A.S. Dargomyzhsky’s vocal creativity is substantiated to understand the relationship between music and words in works for voice and pi-ano, as the actual content of the process of developing competencies necessary for the pedagogical and concertmaster activities of graduates of a music and pedagogical university. The necessity of using the pedagogical component in the study of the concertmaster activity of composers, authors of chamber vocal and opera works has been proved. The main performing techniques of A.S. Dargomyzhsky, developing the principles of representatives of the Russian vocal school, are analyzed. We show the general and distinctive features in the methods of vocal teachers of other national schools: Italian, French, German. An understanding of the role of the creative union of singers and accompanists in the embodiment of the artistic content of musical works is formed. A.S. Dargomyzhsky’s innovative interpretation of traditional vocal genres led to the subordination of the means of musical expression to the main goal – to reveal the meaningful storyline of songs and romances. A parallel is drawn with the formation of performing and pedagogical principles in modern musical culture. The conclusion is made about the dominant role of artistic content in the performing interpretation of musical compositions, as the priority of the activities of musicians-teachers and performers of our time.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to empirically examine the effect of human resource management (HRM) practices on employees’ organisational job embeddedness and job performance. Following the ability-motivation-opportunity (AMO) model of HRM, the authors predicted that ability-, motivation- and opportunity-enhancing HRM practices would relate to fit, links and sacrifice components of job embeddedness, with these components mediating the relationship between HRM and employee job performance. Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected from a matched sample of 197 Chinese state-own firm employees and their supervisors. Multiple mediation test was used to test direct and mediating effects. Findings – Results indicated that HRM practices contribute to the creation and development of embeddedness, and the improvement of job performance. The job embeddedness components of fit, links and sacrifice were found to mediate the HRM-job performance relationship. The results suggest that organisations can proactively enhance both embeddedness and employee performance through implementing appropriate HRM practices. Research limitations/implications – While this study makes a contribution to the understanding of the relationship between HRM practices, employees’ organisational job embeddedness, the authors collected most of the data during one time period. Originality/value – Directly addressing these theoretical and methodological issues, the study makes two key contributions to the HRM and job embeddedness literatures. First, the authors found that the HR practices will directly influence employees’ job embeddedness. Second, the authors extend the scope of the AMO framework of HR by proposing that job embeddedness dimensions as important mediators in the HRM-job performance relationship.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Airway skills such as intubation and bag-valve-mask ventilation (BVM) have historically been considered necessary skills for all general paediatricians. Recently, evidence has driven practice toward goals of reduced invasive respiratory intervention and support. While patient outcomes have improved, implications include reduced airway skill training opportunities for paediatric residents, and possibly challenges in maintaining proficiency for practicing paediatricians. From postgraduate and continuing professional educational perspectives, the specific airway skill needs for Canadian paediatricians in contemporary practice are unclear. Objectives Identify those airway skills that are critical to general paediatric practice in Canada, and whether the skill needs differ by patient age. Design/Methods Data on general paediatric procedural practice was collected in 2018 via a one-time survey through the Canadian Paediatric Surveillance Program. A database was created from the 938 collected responses. The survey asked paediatricians to indicate the frequency of performance, opinion of importance, and challenges in maintaining proficiency of various airway procedures. Data was analyzed descriptively, and questions discriminating infant (age < 2y) vs. child (age ≥ 2y) were compared by chi-square or Fisher’s exact test, as appropriate. Results In total, 481 (51.3%) respondents worked ≥ 50% in general paediatrics and formed the main analysis group. Responses represented broad ranges of career duration, national geography, and practice settings. BVM of infants was the most commonly performed procedure, with 196 (40.8%) performing this monthly. Infant intubation was performed monthly by 58 (12.1%). A total of 355 (73.8%) and 402 (83.6%) reported never performing laryngeal-mask airway insertion and tracheostomy tube exchange respectively. Both BVM and intubation were performed significantly more frequently in infants than in children (p < 0.001). While many respondents considered BVM and intubation of children as essential skills, significantly more rated performing these skills on infants as essential to their practice (p < 0.001). Of those paediatricians that performed procedures as part of their practice, 68/309 (22.0%) and 192/304 (63.2%) reported difficulty in maintaining proficiency in the skills of infant BVM and intubation respectively. Conclusion Although variably utilized, airway skills in infants and children remain a core aspect of practice for many general paediatricians. Specifically, skills related to infants were performed more frequently and were more often rated as essential. Most respondents felt it was challenging to maintain proficiency in several airway skills. Accordingly, airway skills, especially those involving infants, should be emphasized in paediatric residency programs and continuing professional development activities.

Abstract:
In this paper a high accuracy estimation algorithm of carrier frequency offset for MPSK signals in Gaussian white noise is proposed. Like the conventional practice, first the algorithm employs nonlinear processing to convert the MPSK signal to single sinusoidal signal, followed by windowed FFT, and then a method based on energy center correction is used to achieve accurate estimation. Simulation results have proved the feasibility, easiness of implementation, and the performance improvements in terms of accuracy and data length needed.

Abstract:
In the article the author considers the ways of forming the methodological culture of the future teacher-musician, which is considered as a system that includes scientific knowledge, experience of creative activity and experience of emotional and value attitude to research activity. The current stage of development of the education system in Ukraine is characterized by educational innovations aimed at preserving the achievements of the past, and, at the same time, to modernize the education system in accordance with the requirements of the time, the latest science, culture and social practice. A characteristic feature of this period of educational development is the search for new content, forms, methods and means of teaching, education and management; deployment of extensive experimental work aimed at implementing educational innovations, which provides a high level of methodological culture of the teacher. To understand the importance of project activities as the basis for the formation of methodological culture of modern teachers, it is important to understand its essence - from theory to practice, combining academic knowledge with pragmatic and maintaining the appropriate balance at each stage of learning, because today there is a wide difference in definition. We consider methodological culture as a socio-cultural philosophical phenomenon in the plane of the following parameters: project as a method; project method as a system; organizational form of formation of methodological culture of the teacher; introduction of innovative technologies in the educational process as a kind of productive activity of a modern teacher. The introduction of project activities in the practical work of teachers is becoming one of the important needs of today, but it is possible only with thorough training. Unfortunately, there is a simplified understanding of the essence of the project method only as a means of cognitive activity, in-depth study of the subject, development of new knowledge, although it is known that the mission of the project method is to overcome the contemplative dogmatic approach to knowledge, competence, skills solving life problems and the formation of the methodological culture of the teacher. Thus, the formation of the methodological culture of the teacher on the basis of project activities is one of the current areas and main tasks of modern education. This requires the teacher to understand the essence of educational phenomena, familiarize with the logic of the research process, the formation of experience to analyze and predict its further development, which, in turn, will increase the level of methodological culture, contribute to innovative solutions to extraordinary problems.. The purpose of professional education of the future teacher-musician is to form the foundations of his methodological culture. The leading tasks of professional education of a specialist include the formation of skills of practical artistic and pedagogical activities (music performance, vocal conducting, musicology, etc.); formation of bases of methodological thinking; formation of readiness for independent research activity; formation of skills of methodological analysis; formation of skills of professional reflection.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has emerged as a common cause of skin and soft-tissue infections (SSTIs). This has resulted in an 88% increase in MRSA-directed antibiotic use in emergency departments. However, the majority of cellulitis presents as non-purulent due to Group A streptococci. An unintended consequence is that many with non-purulent cellulitis receive sub-optimal antibiotics and unnecessary diagnostics. Clinical guidelines at our institution recommend beta-lactam antibiotics and discourage empiric MRSA coverage for non-purulent cellulitis. The aim of this study is to use an audit-feedback intervention to optimize urgent care providers management of mild/moderate non-purulent cellulitis. Methods We identified all consecutive patients presenting to our urgent care with a diagnosis of lower extremity non-purulent cellulitis using ICD coding. We conducted a prospective pre and post-intervention study from 10/2018-3/2019 and 11/2019-4/2020 respectively. Intervention included review of practice guidelines with providers and feedback from pre-intervention phase. To assess individual practitioners’ prescribing habits, a comprehensive scoring system focused on empiric antibiotic selection, antibiotic duration, and diagnostics was combined with patient demographics. Scores classified non-purulent SSTI treatment as follows: 0–2 = good, 2.5–5 = fair, and >5.5 = poor (Figure 1). Figure 1: Provider Cellulitis Management Scoring Sheet Results There was statistically significant provider score improvement in the post-intervention phase with greater percentage of good cases (40% to 69%) and no poor cases (Figure 2). For IV antibiotics for mild and moderate cellulitis, there was decreased use of overly broad antibiotics (Figure 3). Antibiotic duration of greater than 7 days decreased from 68% to 52%. Combination antibiotic therapy decreased from 12% to 4%. There was also a statistically significant decrease in use of wound cultures but no change in ultrasound use. Figure 2: Overall Provider Scores Figure 3: IV Antibiotic Use Conclusion Audit-feedback intervention was effective for improving antibiotic usage and decreasing treatment duration. Providing physicians with data on their practice patterns relative to those of their peers and clinical practice guidelines can improve management of non-purulent cellulitis.
