The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics of the performance activities of the Gayageum Byeongchang in North Korea from the late 1990s to the present. The information is based on the Joseon Munhak Yesul Nyeongam (The Chosun Literature Art Yearbook), a series of publications that record the whole of activities and achievements of the arts in North Korea. As a result of the study, it is possible to examine the commonalities and differences in performance activities by broadly dividing them into performance classes, events, and themes. As for the performing class, it can be divided into professional art groups and smaller local art groups. Although the professional groups are represented by the likes such as the North Korean People’s Army Orchestra, and the local groups by students and female organizations, the frequency of the activities was found to be equal to each other. The events performed by both professional and local art groups were divided into a mixture of Gayageum Byeongchang, Gayageum Dok Byeongchang, and Gayageum Byeongchang, with Gayageum Byeongchang activities being the largest among them. In particular, the rampant use of electronic music was drastically reduced during this period while the use of ethnic instruments was encouraged in professional art organizations. As a result, the activities of Gayageum Byeongchang, which had been actively using electronic instruments since the 1980s, decreased significantly. The songs that are performed are also different between professional art organizations and local art groups. In sharing common themes of ideological liberal arts teachings and mass propaganda, the performances of local art groups also vary in theme related to each social class within the art groups. Through this study, it can be seen that North Korea’s Gayageum Byeongchang has changed from professional-oriented performances to developing and expanding into smaller local art groups and activities, thereby gaining popularity and universality.

'Panappoothan' is an art form performed by the Pana community at festivals at the Bhagvati temples in old Valluvanad district of Kerala.Unlike the Poothan performance of other castes, Panans also sing songs in their Poothan and Andi kali. They perform 'anchati pattukal', hymns and 'kummi pattukal' along with the performance. These songs have not yet been recorded in our folk song tradition or literary history. This essay analyzes these songs descriptively and determines the folk identity expressed in it.

This article presents arts-based action research on enhancing children’s creativity through affect within participatory performance art and performance pedagogy. The study hypothesis was that children’s creativity can be enhanced by affect experienced at a performance site. The purpose of the study was to investigate the impact of children’s involvement in artistic performance on their creativity at a performance site. The impact of interactions at the site, the co-participating children,and the involved artists were monitored on a daily basis to collect qualitative data, which were analyzed using a general inductive approach. Objective themes relating to the variables were retrieved from the collected data and assigned codes, concepts, and keywords extracted from photographs,video recordings, and observation notes. The case under investigation was the “Nomadic Radical Academy 2020: The Good, the Bad, and the Art”, which built on a pilot event held in 2019. This research concluded that performance art can have a social and creative impact during an art event through children’s participation and can be used by performance artists and educators.

This essay focuses on works of video art from the 1970s and early 1980s by Letícia Parente (1930–1991), a first-generation video art pioneer in Brazil, whose video performances associated household imagery, domestic spaces, and quotidian chores and objects with violence, repression, and incarceration during the period the Brazilian dicatorship (1964–1985). Parente worked in video performance, an approach to performance art in which she performed for the video camera, rather than for a live audience. I argue that in her video performances, Parente performs domestic and quotidian actions in ways that enact self-harm and confinement in order to marshal a response to gender oppression in women’s daily lives that paralleled the violence and imprisonment Brazilians experienced under the dictatorship. By enacting disciplinary “punishments” (or the threat of such punishments) on herself, cloaked as daily domestic tasks, her works demonstrate the ways that the same forces that structure public disciplinary society also configure the private spaces of the home. I propose that she positions domestic space as a zone of containment and imprisonment, and that her resistance occurs not in the space itself but through the absurdity and ironic bathos of their bodily performances, as well as her actual or implied self-harm and violence, themes I address by engaging Kathy O’Dell’s theorization of “masochistic performance art,” and Hal Foster’s concept of “mimetic adaptation.”

This article presents an analysis of contemporary performance art carried out by women in Galicia; a complex issue if we consider that the nature of the discipline is a practically unexplored matter. Our reflection begins by defining the typology and particularities of Galician performance art. After that, we address the performance art context in Galicia and, finally, we examine the production of three artists that we consider essential: María Marticorena, Ana Gesto and María Roja. Our methodology emerges from a thorough search of available bibliographic resources, updated fieldwork through interviews, and tracking of photographic and videographic documentation. We have opted for a qualitative interview, focused on the artists analysed in the article which can be consulted as "Annex I", attached at the end of the text. This article unveils performance art that starts in the second half of the first decade of the new century, with the almost exclusive presence of women developing heterogeneous themes but influenced by the Galician cultural context. They haven’t had institutional support or been part of self-management movements, so frequent in other parts of Spain.

This study aims to analyze the art of kebo bule as broadcasting Islam in Sukosari Village, Ponorogo Regency. Data collection techniques used were in-depth interviews, observation, collection and documentation. The research subjects were the heads of the Caucasian arts community, religious leaders and the community. The objects of this study are experiments, concepts, places and activities. steps and data analysis using the Spradley (2016) model are (1) domain analysis, which is to get a general picture of the attractions visited. Look for some observations with grandtour and minitrour; (2) Taxonomic analysis, which is choosing the appropriate domain to be described in more detail, to know the internal structure, and is done with focused observation. (3) Componential analysis finds specific features in each structure by contrasting the elements carried out by interviews and selected observations, and (4) analysis of cultural themes, namely finding relationships between domains that are used together to use themes or titles. The results showed, (1) the art of kebo bule in Ponorogo has historical roots in the emotional connection between Ponorogo and the Keraton Surakarta; (2) the art of kebo bule is a way to preserve local culture of Ponorogo which has historical value; (3) Islamic da'wah media through the art of kebo bule carried out through the performance of the designation, the content of the songs accompanying the arts, Islamic tausiyah, and (4) collaboration of art that combines Javanese art, Reog art, Middle Eastern art, Chinese art, and Balinese art.

This article addresses the questions triggered by the work of the Cuban-American artist Ana Mendieta, who has a large part of her work composed exclusively of camera performances and what she termed earth-body-works. Through her strategies of representation based on the disappearance of the female body, Mendieta draws our attention to the legitimized violence and erasures through the establishment of fixed identities – ethnic and gender – within the hegemonic discourses of power. The notions of performance as an instrument for transmission of knowledge and cultural memory, of performativity as a constitutive factor of the categories of identity, as well as of archive, repertory and live event will be explored in the effort to problematize as the themes of exile and feminine, regular in the art of Mendieta, reach a deeply political dimension based on their artistic propositions that integrate photography with performance art.

This practice-based thesis (comprising of an exegesis, exhibition, performances
and their documentation) traces a myriad of cognitive and sub cognitive
processes that converge towards a complex practice referred to as 'Aquabatics'.
In broad terms, Aquabatics describes the research nexus of occupational diving
and contemporary performance. The purpose of this body of research has been
to explore underwater performance, behaviour and boarders, in order to both
devise new works of live art and to develop new methodologies and approaches
to art-making. Aquabatics, as a performance strategy, seeks to critique, contest
and explore the liminal natures of human performance, and the role and context
of live artists, in contemporary life.

TITLE: PERFORMANCE ART AS SUBLIMATION: THE CASE OF DANCE MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Stephen Dollinger Creativity and sublimation have been linked throughout the theoretical literature on psychological defense, especially in relation to artistic creativity. As a performance art, dance has been included as a creative form in one of the commonly used measures of creative accomplishments. These links suggest the possibility that dance and sublimation may be related. The purpose of this study was to determine whether dancers endorsed sublimation more than did non-dancers. Participants consisted of 126 female participants recruited from two psychology courses and a university dance company. They completed a questionnaire about level of involvement in dance, Hocevar's Creative Behavior Inventory (including a number of dance items), and the Defense Styles Questionnaire with additional sublimation items (modeled after the sublimation item already in the DSQ) embedded within it. Results indicated that sublimation was a significant predictor of dance, as was SES. SES had a curvilinear relationship with dance such that those identified as well-off were most likely to dance. Four of the six individual sublimation items correlated significantly with dance. Particular motivations to dance also correlated significantly with sublimation and dance. Dance correlated with some of the other CBI creativity scales, but not all, suggesting domain specificity.

Will it ever be acceptable for a non-Aboriginal actor to play an Aboriginal role? In literature there are clear protocols for writing Aboriginal characters and themes. In the visual arts and in dance, non-Indigenous practitioners might 'reference' Aboriginal themes, but what about in theatre performance? This research embodies one cultural dilemma in a creative project and exegesis: exploring the complex issues which emerge when an Aboriginal playwright is commissioned to write an 'Aboriginal themed' play for two non-Aboriginal actors.

While the negative effects of the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001 are still permeating throughout the United States, a few novelists have taken on the extreme task of writing about this historic event. Richard Gray describes the failure of language after the attack took place, yet novelists wanted to write about this tragedy anyway. Reading trauma in 9/11 is inevitable as it is important. In looking at three novels that deal with the events during and the aftermath of 9/11, I hope to consider the way art is used in these texts. In doing so, my thesis will look at the possibility of art being able to heal the wounds of this traumatic event. My second chapter will focus on the novel Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer. This novel depicts the effect 9/11 had on the child protagonist, Oskar, and follows him as he works through the trauma of losing his father in the South Tower. The third chapter of my thesis will discuss Don DeLillo's Falling Man, which offers a depiction of the powerful effect trauma has on the main characters in the novel, particularly Lianne. The performance artist is discussed at length. My fourth chapter will discuss the novel The Submission by Amy Waldman. Just as Maya Lin's submission for her Vietnam memorial sparked controversy, Waldman takes the same approach by casting an American Muslim as the artist and memorial architect for 9/11. While the previous novels focus on the personal effects of trauma on the characters, my chapter on The Submission will elucidate how trauma is negotiated on a national scale. I hope to answer such questions as: What do we expect in a memorial? What should we expect? What are the various demands survivors place on memorials?

This paper is a conceptual, theoretical, and methodological exploration of my MFA thesis project (Dis)connections. My work combines time-based media, objects, and performance into a single installation that represents my struggles with anxiety and my desire to connect with people socially. My work is ultimately about the complexity of the structures of language and communication in all their forms and representations. I draw on research into feminist theory and gender studies as well as cultural theory as a way to ground my work in political and social issues that are continually relevant in Western culture, and to propose that by situating my stories within larger structures of power they have the ability to connect to a wider group of people.

The purpose of this study was to identify and evaluate the practices and techniques of vocal training for student actors at a tertiary level, through a survey of experienced voice practitioners in Australian performing arts schools, appropriate texts, consideration of contexts and my own professional experience. Vocal instruction starts with the basic training of ‘the instrument’ or the vocal capabilities of the body. Following this or concurrent with its teaching, more specific forms of training are addressed. This research project used qualitative research methods to compile a detailed description of the voice teaching practices currently used in Australia. It comprises two parts, namely, a documented analysis of vocal training for acting and a series of interviews with professional voice trainers at performing arts institutions in Australia. The analysis attempted to discern and clarify patterns and themes in vocal training and detail possible similarities/differences with overseas models of teaching identified by the analysis of American and British texts in current use.

As a creative expression, the multi or hybrid art form is in its infancy and still battling to achieve recognition and acceptance. This thesis recognises the importance of this new form and considers the place of artistic hybridity in history to constrnct a clear definition. This definition is used as a template for the construction of a new hybrid work, called Coma Neck 8. Using a Performance as Research methodology Coma Neck 8 provides data for the exploration of issues encountered in preparing and presenting a hybrid work. The issues are categorised as the intention of the work, form, amateur/professional status, logistical context and human context of the work. The synthesis and
analysis of these issues then provides a series of best practice principles for future art makers to consider.

The focus of this DCA thesis is the development of original creative audio and audio-visual work. Central to this is a study of the nature of interactivity and sonic relationships between electroacoustic and acoustic music, extended further by the application of sonic and visual interactivity. This written documentation accompanies the major part of the DCA submission, a folio of five original works. Its purpose is to clarify, document and contextualise the creation of these works and to illuminate the aesthetic underpinnings and compositional techniques that I have developed during the period 2000 � 2004. The structure of this documentation is in three parts which support the research methodology of reflective investigation. This process begins with an introductory overview (Chapter 1). This is extended in the second part, (Chapters 2�5), an observation of the effect of the culture, contemporary musical environments and related creative practice in my work. The third part, (Chapters 6�10), details the nature, and techniques utilized in the development of the new works. These developments have also embraced the combination of live projected interactive visual imagery with acoustic and electronic instrumentation. Finally, I have investigated the role of sonic spatialisation and texture as expressive and structural devices in music composition.

Can reenactments be a way to create counter-narratives in and for the museum? Through the analysis of political performance (or what the artist Tania Bruguera calls ‘political-timing-specific’ artworks), this essay discusses the potential of reenactment as both a practice of materializing memories and narratives of oppression and of rethinking museum policies in terms of preservation and display. Its main argument is that, while the archive can be regarded as a form of materializing the memory of these works, reenactment is more than a way of recovering the past; it is also a device for reconstructing memories of activism and oppression. This essay further suggests that reenactments of political-timing-specific works demand a change in accessioning, conservation, and presentation practices, which might be inclined to erase decentralized art-historical and material narratives.

Film was allied with live performance because of its movement and also because many actors started in vaudeville. Hollywood often reproduced Broadway plays, prompting critics to try to define what might be specifically cinematographic, such as a facility for shifting from one layer of consciousness to another. Film allowed for a new kind of experience of dramatic art, more remote than theater in some ways but also endowed with new resources such as the close-up, location shooting, and a broad public sometimes apt for unaccustomed themes and treatments. Urban anonymity and the social effects of an increasingly mechanized environment were recurrent themes. The reckless and the impossible are framed by a final case study, namely the work of Stephen Cripps, whose dangerous and risk-prone pyrotechnic performances and interactive sculptures can be understood as significant to the development of performance art – and the incipient cultural logic of the performance of extremity – in the 1970s. The conclusion offers final thoughts on the performance of extremity, and on art’s optimistic promise to manifest or achieve the reckless, the impossible, the incorrigible, or the unlimited.

The second theme addresses four alternative perspectives to grammatical approaches based on design automation, procedural modelling, genetic algorithms, and other algorithmic generation and evaluation methods. The last theme examines research using algebraic shape descriptions and operations. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a critical summary of recent trends in Shape Grammar research and an overview of the relationship between grammatical and generative systems in architecture.

Informed by interdisciplinary performance studies, this article explores what musicology might look like if it was built on the idea of music as performance, and how the study of performance can contribute to an understanding of the role of music in culture. In addition to traditional humanities approaches and the employment of close listening, the sheer number of recorded performances creates scope for the use of quantitative approaches. Setting these into the broader context of digital humanities, and putting forward the idea of ‘augmented listening’, I show how technology can serve to advance the understanding of music as cultural phenomenon and human experience.

The semiosphere of the miracle is a space of production and reproduction of meaning where the aesthetics of the impossible breaks with everyday life, the Mexican votive offering as a testimony contains a large number of themes, ranging from the sacred to the profane, from the drama to the ‘chusco’. The narrative that is painted in each painting can be analyzed as a staging, as a complex performance that is designed through a dialogue between the subject who was benefited by the miracle, and the artist subject who with his brush eternalizes the moment, offering to our gaze a sea of symbols exalted in a level of sacred reality. The objective of this article is to show how, through the creation of models that integrate transdisciplinary and complex analytic categories, we can rethink Mexican popular art in a novel way.

When second-wave feminism spread across America in the 1970s, it left some women with an acute identity crisis. How did their new, liberated self relate to the one they had left behind? Comparing two performances from 1974—a reading by Anne Sexton of her poem “Self in 1958” and a performance art piece by Eleanor Antin called Eleanor of 1954—this essay shows how two women struggled to span the distance between their pre- and post-feminist selves. These performances (and many like them) questioned the promise of transformation held out by feminist consciousness raising. In consciousness-raising groups, women would confess the truth of their lives and, so they hoped, purge themselves of old pre-feminist identities. Artists like Sexton and Antin instead used art to fathom the gap (and the ongoing connection) between past and present, oppression and liberation.

The smartphone themes submitted to the themestore are first evaluated by human experts to ensure a pleasant visual experience1. One of the main challenges in smartphone themes evaluation is to validate the contrast of the elements of the theme. Contrast refers to the difference in visual properties that makes an object distinguishable from other objects and the background. In this work, we propose an automatic themes evaluation approach that validates the contrast of Android smartphone themes among regular and non-regular at the element level. To localize the contrast affected regions, the proposed themes evaluation is divided into two phases: 1) Element extraction; and 2) Contrast evaluation. For element extraction, a customized framework is created that utilizes native Android frameworks. Following, these elements are analyzed by using a specifically designed Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for smartphone theme elements contrast evaluation. The proposed approach is evaluated on two databases which are composed of using the real Android themes. Experiments suggest that our proposed contrast-detection network can obtain a better performance than the known state-of-the-art classification methods, in smartphone themes evaluation, based on evaluation measures like Accuracy, F1 score, processing time and others.

Challenges in image aesthetics assessment (IAA) arise from that images of different themes correspond to different evaluation criteria, and learning aesthetics directly from images while ignoring the impact of theme variations on human visual perception inhibits the further development of IAA; however, existing IAA datasets and models overlook this problem. To address this issue, we show that a theme-oriented dataset and model design are effective for IAA. Specifically, 1) we elaborately build a novel dataset, called TAD66K, that contains 66K images covering 47 popular themes, and each image is densely annotated by more than 1200 people with dedicated theme evaluation criteria. 2) We develop a baseline model, TANet, which can effectively extract theme information and adaptively establish perception rules to evaluate images with different themes. 3) We develop a large-scale benchmark (the most comprehensive thus far) by comparing 17 methods with TANet on three representative datasets: AVA, FLICKR-AES and the proposed TAD66K, TANet achieves state-of-the-art performance on all three datasets. Our work offers the community an opportunity to explore more challenging directions; the code, dataset and supplementary material are available at https://github.com/woshidandan/TANet.

“The Rei Kawakubo's fashion-sculpture” is an ongoing Master's project, developed at the Postgraduate Program in Visual Design at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. The research is centered on the study of the costumes (and its relationship with movements and spatiality) created by the japanese fashion designer Rei Kawakubo for the dance performance “Scenario” (1997), by the american dancer and choreographer Merce Cunningham (1919-2009). The costumes were adapted from the spring-summer Collection “Body meets dress, dress meets body”, designed by Rei and launched by her brand Comme des Garçons in 1997. Rei Kawakubo is appointed as one of the most important conceptualist fashion designers of contemporary. Visionary, avant-garde, timeless, are some of the adjectives attributed to her. Her work is also called anti-fashion. Through a series of visual deconstructions, her creations address – directly or indirectly – themes such as feminism and gender identity. The “Body meets dress, dress meets body” Collection and the costumes of “Scenario” invest in an aesthetic that explores unusual possibilities of relationships between body and dress; an aesthetic which aims to deform the forms. At play, ideas that problematize the conventional contours and movements of the body: disproportionate volumes, silhouette misalignments, inversions of perspective, asymmetries, automatism, blurring of boundaries between body and dress, dress as an object. In this arena the suggestion of the notion of “fashion-sculpture” is born. A notion that is intended to be formulated from the work and for the understanding of the work. The investigation is developed from case study methodologies combined with a process of practical experimentation, which takes place simultaneously in the fields of art and design. In the scope of theoretical reflections it is proposed an approximation with the understanding of sculpture as a compound of sensations according to the Deleuze and Guattari conception in the essay “Percept, affect and concept”. The research seeks to establish a connexion between the sculptural compositions produced by the body-costume ensemble in Cunningham's choreography and the symbolic image of a stone sculpture that is at the origin of the concept of Über-Marionette designed by Gordon Craig. Finally, we try to think about possible relationships between the shapes of the costumes and some characteristic aspects of the grotesque body, such as ambivalences, oppositions, irregularities, described by Mikhail Bakhtin in his concept of grotesque realism. The costumes of the “Scenario” dance performance – in which the highlighted aspects can be observed exemplarily – are a strong expression of the idea of “fashion-sculpture”. In this communication, fragments of the show will be presented. In them, it can be seen that the alignment of the dancers, in pairs or trios, reconfigures in the space the volume composed of body and dress. The clothes created by Kawakubo for the Collection proposed the redesign of the body. This proposal is radicalized in the choreography: with the movement of the body-dress set in space, distortions and ambiguities are intensified. Theatricality is introduced and dramatic sculptural compositions are formed. With the theatrical game, the object function of the garment is also evidenced.

This paper considers an indigenous, methodological framework developed for my doctoral thesis, ‘Asi: The Presence of the Unseen. Defined as ‘Ngatu’ the framework employs the heliaki (metaphor) of women’s collective crafting of indigenous fabric, to structure an artistic research project. Ngatu is cloth made from the bark of the paper mulberry tree. Used for floor mats, bedding, clothing and room dividers it is also often given as a gift at weddings, funerals and formal presentations. Ngatu is considered one of Oceania’s distinctive art forms and processes. Within the study, the position of the researcher is both a creator of artistic work and a reflector on the experience and practices of other collaborators. The Ngatu framework enables a practice-led inquiry that is underpinned by indigenous principles: uouongataha (the pursuit of harmony), mālie/māfana (warmth and beauty) and anga fakatōkilalo (being open to learning). Guided by these values, the methodology employs five distinct phases: TŌ (gestation) TĀ (harvesting knowledge) NGAOHI / TUTU (preparing and expanding ideas) HOKO/KOKA’ANGA (harmonious composition), and FOAKI (presentation). The Ngatu methodology may be seen in the light of a significant discussion in 2019, where a gathering of Oceanic scholars considered a proliferation of Indigenous models of inquiry that had been developed by Pacific researchers outside of conventional Western research paradigms. Although much of the discussion focused on research emanating from Health and the Social Sciences, the use of heliaki to describe methodological approaches to artistic inquiry also has a discernible history in doctoral theses in Aotearoa/New Zealand (Pouwhare, 2020; Toluta’u, 2015; Tupou, 2018; Vea, 2015). The Ngatu methodological framework was applied to the question, “What occurs when young Oceanic people work together artistically in a group, drawing on values from their cultural heritage to create meaningful faiva (artistic performances)?” In posing this question, the thesis sought to understand how, ‘asi (the spirit of the unseen), might operate as an empowering agency for endeavour and belonging. As such, the study proposed that ‘asi which is conventionally identified at the peak of artistic performance, might be also discernible before and after such an event, and resource the energy of artistic practice as a whole. The Ngatu methodology was applied to two bodies of work. The first was a co-created project called Lila. This was developed by a team of secondary school students who produced a contemporary faiva for presentation in 2019. This case study was used in conjunction with interviews from contemporary Oceanic youth leaders, reflecting on the nature and agency of ‘asi, as it appears in their artistic workshops with young people. The second work was a performance called FAIVA | FAI VĀ. This was the researcher’s artistic response to the witnessed nature of ‘asi. The performance integrated spoken word poetry, sound, illustration and video design.

Someone could claim that a well prepared, contemporary theatrical production consists of a thorough planning, a period of rehearsals and the final presentation of the work before the audience. Whether we talk about a collective theatrical organization or a hierarchical one, we should agree upon the fact that the directorial vision could be considered as the motivating gear of a theatrical performance. It is the director’s or the team’s directorial vision – in the cases of alternative, collective theatrical productions – which guides those who participate in a theatrical performance and, therefore, it is commonly accepted by actors and actresses that one should follow instructions, find his path and “build” his role as part of a team which serves a certain objective. Because of the diversity and complexity of modern productions as well as the increasing need for high quality, original performances – in terms of mise-en-scène, acting, stage and costume design, lightning and music – certain professional collaborates are called to participate in the stage of the preparation and contribute to the final aesthetics of a production. In the case of preparing the theatrical performance of an ancient Greek Comedy, the musician plays a significant role, as the choruses of ancient comedy are an integral part of this genre. The performance of the ancient Greek Comedy Acharnes in 1976 by the theatrical group of Greek Art Theatre (Theatro Technis), under the directorial guidance of Karolos Koun and the music which Christos Leontis composed for its needs, is a case study for the current thesis, the analysis of which intends to reveal the way the composer collaborated with the director and the members of the theatre company. The play, written by Aristophanes, was first taught and presented to the ancient Athenian audience in 425 B.C. The choral parts, accompanied by music and sang by the members of the chorus, have since antiquity been considered to be of significant importance for this ancient theatrical genre. It is, therefore, quite intriguing to thoroughly and methodologically examine the way the music composed for the needs of a specific performance contributed to the overall outgrowth of a contemporary attempt to present the ideas and the beliefs of an ancient Greek poet to the modern Greek theatrical audience. Did the composer follow the instructions of the director? Did he serve the directorial vision? Did he interact with the director and the members of the Greek Art Theatre? In what ways and up to what extent was music co-responsible for the commonly accepted success of this particular performance? It will be attempted to answer the above questions with the help of the composer’s personal testimony, his kind contribution of archival material from his personal files, accompanied by the simultaneous, cross-examined analysis of the performance which was filmed in 1976.

Abstract In this paper, we define Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) as a set of different approaches which vary in scope and in purpose, as opposed to defining it as a monolithic concept. To do so, we inductively extract common themes from papers proposing new MBSE methods based on the type of Systems Engineering (SE) artifacts produced and the expected benefits of MBSE implementation. These themes are then validated against the experiences depicted in a second set of papers evaluating the deployment of MBSE methods in practice. We propose a taxonomy for MBSE which identifies three main categories: system specification repositories, system execution models, and design automation models. The proposed categories map well onto common discussions of the nature of the SE activity, in that the first is employed in the management of system development processes and the second in the understanding of system performance and emergent properties. The third category is almost exclusively discussed in an academic context and is therefore more difficult to relate to SE practice, but its features are clearly distinct from the other two. The proposed taxonomy clarifies what MBSE is and what it can be, therefore helping focus research on the issues that still prevent MBSE practice from living up to expectations.

Interpersonal ties are pivotal to individual efficacy, status and performance in an agent society.This paper explores three important and interrelated themes in social network theory: the center/periphery partition of the network; network dynamics; and social integration of newcomers. We tackle the question: How would a newcomer harness information brokerage to integrate into a dynamic network going from periphery to center? We model integration as the interplay between the newcomer and the dynamics network and capture information brokerage using a process of relationship building. We analyze theoretical guarantees for the newcomer to reach the center through tactics; proving that a winning tactic always exists for certain types of network dynamics. We then propose three tactics and show their superior performance over alternative methods on four real-world datasets and four network models. In general, our tactics place the newcomer to the center by adding very few new edges on dynamic networks with ~14000 nodes.

Friction reduction is a very challenging theme in research and development on reciprocating engines, and in particular on engines for passenger cars. The points for improvement are several: valve train and timing command, piston package, liners, crankshaft, ancillaries and related command, lubrication, cooling, and involve optimization of couplings, components design, materials, manufacturing technology, etc. This paper presents a comprehensive activity of engine development, which starts from considerations about the single contribution of each functional group of the engine on total friction, selects the fields of research where the most effective results can be expected, and concludes with results obtained on a Demonstration Vehicle. The fuel consumption reduction obtained is about 11% with respect to (w.r.t.) the reference vehicle in the NEDC, with better performance. No modifications in terms of drag force, weight and gearbox/tyre configuration have been made to the vehicle itself. The main themes of development have been: a new lightened valve train, also featuring “shimless” mechanical tappets; and a new piston package, which includes a piston with only two segments, a newly designed con-rod and a lightened piston pin . The range of FMEP reduction obtained is about 10–26% w.r.t. base engine over the whole engine speed and load map, with the strongest effect in the low speed and load range. Additionally, a new thermodynamic package has been developed, including a new intake manifold and combustion chamber, to improve engine performance at full load and to have a further reduction in BSFC at part load. Furthermore, combustion optimization allows for a synergic effect together with friction reduction at low engine speed and load, which reflects in real-life vehicle urban driving. In fact, lower friction reduces the indicated torque needed for a given mechanical torque. At low engine speed load, lower IMEP gives lower thermodynamic efficiency and higher combustion instability. A parallel improvement in combustion efficiency reduces this negative effect, giving a higher engine efficiency. Combustion optimization also led to a reduction in the engine speed at idle, due to the improved combustion stability. This gives an additional reduction of vehicle fuel consumption. Finally, functionality and durability of the new components have been tested and validated. In particular, the new two-segments pistons have been optimized for blow-by and oil consumption, obtaining results equal to or lower than the standard package. Both the piston package and the new lightened valve-train have been tested for durability with procedures usually required for production validation.

This project analysed the creative practices and concerns of young adult artists (18-35 years old) in contemporary Cambodia. It examined the extent to which the arts are being used to open up new ways of enacting Cambodian identity that encompass, but also move beyond, a preoccupation with the Khmer Rouge (1975-1979). Existing research has focused on how the recuperation and revival of traditional performance is linked to the post-genocidal reconstruction of the nation. In contrast, this research examines if, and how, young artists are moving beyond the revival process to create works that speak to a young Cambodian population.The research used NGO Cambodian Living Arts’ 2020 Cultural Season of performances, workshops, and talks as a case study through which to examine key concerns of young Cambodian artists, trace how these affected their creative process, and analyse how the resulting works were received among audiences. It was funded through the AHRC GCRF Network Plus Grant ‘Changing the Story’ which uses arts and humanities approaches to ‘build inclusive societies with, and for, young people in post-conflict settings.

This rapid review focusses on whether there is international evidence on the role of non-partisan elections as a form of decentralised local government that improves performance of local government. The review provides examples of this from Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. There are two reported examples in Sub-Saharan Africa of non-partisan elections that delink candidates from political parties during election campaigns. The use of non-partisan elections to improve performance and democratic accountability at the level of government is not common, for example, in southern Africa all local elections at the sub-national sphere follow the partisan model. Whilst there were no examples found where countries shifted from partisan to non-partisan elections at the local government level, the literature notes that decentralisation policies have the effect of democratising and transferring power and therefore few central governments implement it fully. In Africa decentralisation is favoured because it is often used as a cover for central control. Many post-colonial leaders in Africa continue to favour centralised government under the guise of decentralisation. These preferences emanated from their experiences under colonisation where power was maintained by colonial administrations through institutions such as traditional leadership. A review of the literature on non-partisan elections at the local government level came across three examples where this occurred. These countries were: Ghana, Uganda and Bangladesh. Although South Africa holds partisan elections at the sub-national sphere, the election of ward committee members and ward councillors, is on a non-partisan basis and therefore, the ward committee system in South Africa is included as an example of a non-partisan election process in the review.

Iron oxide (α-Fe₂O₃, hematite) colloids were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and investigated as catalysts for the photodegradation of an organic dye under broad-spectrum illumination. To enhance photocatalytic performance, Fe₂O₃ was combined with other transition-metal oxide (TMO) colloids (e.g., CuO and ZnO), which are sensitive to different regions of the solar spectrum (far visible and ultraviolet, respectively), using a ternary blending approach for compositional mixtures. For a variety of ZnO/Fe₂O₃/CuO mole ratios, the pseudo-first-order rate constant for methyl orange degradation was at least double the sum of the individual Fe₂O₃ and CuO rate constants, indicating there is an underlying synergy governing the photocatalysis reaction with these combinations of TMOs. A full compositional study was carried out to map the interactions between the three TMOs. Additional experiments probed the identity and role of reactive oxygen species and elucidated the mechanism by which CuO enhanced Fe₂O₃ photodegradation while ZnO did not. The increased photocatalytic performance of Fe2O3 in the presence of CuO was associated with hydroxyl radical ROS, consistent with heterogeneous photo-Fenton mechanisms, which are not accessible by ZnO. These results imply that low-cost photocatalytic materials can be engineered for high performance under solar illumination by selective pairing of TMOs with compatible ROS.

Review question / Objective: The objective of the present study was to analyze the findings of the scientific literature related to MMA through an exploratory systematic review on the subject and to present the state of the art of the sport from a multifactorial perspective. Condition being studied: Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport characterized by its high degree of freedom in offensive and defensive approaches resulting in the inclusion of techniques and tactics from multiple combat sport styles. MMA has gained legitimacy and uniformity of rule sets after a tumultuous and unregulated introduction in North America as well as it is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are still no methodical, comprehensive, transparent, and replicable studies that have summarized the overall perspective of MMA athletes, resulting in an integrated analysis for a better scientific understanding and more efficient practical applications.

For cost-efficiency, public safety, and sustainability, improving long-term performance in highway projects is imperative for public administrations. Project delivery and procurement methods provide an opportunity to align design and construction processes with this goal. While previous studies have explored whether project delivery methods impact the long-term performance of highway projects, these studies did not focus on how core elements within project procurement relate to long-term performance. Thus, to fill this gap, this research explores how and to what extent long-term evaluation criteria are considered in design-build best-value procurement of highway projects. To this end, the team conducted content analysis on 100 projects procured between 2009 and 2019 by 19 DOTs across the U.S. The analysis of 365 evaluation criteria found that (1) roughly 11% of them related to long-term performance. (2) The weight given to these criteria in the overall technical proposal was lower than 30%. (3) Sixty-five percent (65%) of long-term evaluation criteria focused on design while 15% related to materials and technology, respectively. The results of this study are a stepping stone to initiate a deep exploration of the relationship between procurement practices and actual project performance. Currently, as sustainability and life cycle assessments remain top concerns in infrastructure projects, this line of research may benefit DOTs and highway agencies across the U.S. and worldwide.

In November 2022, Wejo Data Services Inc. provided Purdue with a national data set comprised of approximately 470 billion connected vehicle records covering all 50 states for the month of August 2022. The goal of the evaluation data set was to create a series of summary graphics to evaluate the scalability of work zone analytics graphics and electric/hybrid vehicle counts at a national level. This report illustrates several performance measures developed using this dataset for all interstate routes, both state wise and cross-country. State wise graphics are organized with 50 subdirectories containing graphics for each interstate in the 50 states. There are also a series of multi-state graphics for I-5, I-10, I-15, I-35, I-55, I-65, I-75, I-80, I-90, and I-95. Performance measures include absolute and normalized trip counts classified by type of trip (electric vehicle or hybrid vehicle or internal combustion engine vehicle), weekly heatmaps based on vehicle speed overlaid with hard-braking events and finally, speed profiles by interstate mile markers. In recent years there has been a growing concern over the performance of Israel and U.S. agricultural marketing organizations. In Israel, poor performance of some marketing institutions has led to radical reforms. Examples are the two leading export industries - citrus and flowers. In the U.S., growth of local market power is eliminating competitive row product prices which served as the basis for farmer cooperative payment plans. This research studies, theoretically, several aspects of the above problem and develops empirical methods to assess their relative importance. The theoretical part deals with two related aspects of the operation of processing and marketing firms. The first is the technological structure of these firms. To this end, we formalize a detailed theory that describes the production process itself and the firm's decision. The model accounts for multiple products and product characteristics. The usefulness of the theory for measurement of productivity and pricing of raw material is demonstrated. The second aspect of the processing and marketing firm that we study is unique to the agricultural sector, where many such firms are cooperatives. In such cooperative an efficient and fair mechanism for purchasing raw materials from members is crucial to successful performances of the firm. We focus on: 1) pricing of raw materials. 2) comparison of employment of quota and price regimes by the cooperative to regulate the quantities, supplied by members. We take into consideration that the cooperative management is subject to pressure from member farmers. 3) Tier pricing for raw materials in order to ensure efficiency and zero profits at the cooperative level. This problem is examined in both closed and open cooperatives. The empirical part focuses in: 1) the development of methodologies for estimating demand for differentiated products; 2) assessing farmers response to component pricing; 3) measurement of potential and actual exploitation of market power by an agricultural marketing firm. The usefulness of the developed methodologies are demonstrated by several application to agricultural sub-sectors, including: U.S. dairy industry, Oregon wine industry, Israeli Cotton industry and Israeli Citrus industry.

Pedestrian safety is an important concern when evaluating intersections. Previous literature has shown that exclusive pedestrian phases improve safety, but at the expense of imposing greater pedestrian and motorist delay. However, outside of crash data, there are no easily implementable performance measures for pedestrians at traffic signals. This study proposes two performance metrics: (1) a time-to-jaywalk measure, and (2) the Conflict Occupancy Ratio (COR) for evaluating concurrent pedestrian signal phasing with turning vehicles. The COR quantifies conflicts between turning vehicles and pedestrians in the crosswalk. The COR is based upon a commercially deployed video detection system that correctly identified the presence of pedestrians to within two per cycle in this study. This performance is likely sufficient for the current application, but as the technology matures it will provide a scalable screening tool to identify intersections that have opportunities for capacity adjustments or warrant further direct field investigation.
