Martínez, Fernández María del Carmen. "Códigos y grafos sobre anillos de enteros complejos." Doctoral thesis, Universidad de Cantabria, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/10699.

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to define perfect codes for different multidimensional signal spaces. To solve this problem, this thesis presents an original relationship among the fields of Graph Theory, Number Theory and Coding Theory. One of our main findings is the proposal of a suitable metric over quadratic, hexagonal and four-dimensional constellations of signal points. This metric is the distance among vertices of a new class of Cayley graphs defined over integer rings, namely Gaussian integers, the Eisenstein-Jacobi integers and the Lipschitz integers.A problem in Graph Theory known as the perfect dominating set calculation is solved over the families of graphs defined in this memory. A sufficient condition for obtaining such a set is given for each case. The obtention of these sets of domination directly yields to the construction of perfect codes for the alphabets under consideration. In addition, some isomorphism and graph embedding results are going to be obtained. Specially, the relations between circulant, toroidal and the graphs presented in this work are stated. In particular, there always exist orders for which a Torus graph can be embedded in Gaussian, Eisenstein-Jacobi and Lipschitz graphs. This implies that the well-known Lee distance is a subcase of the metrics presented in this research.

Fettig, Jake Alan. "Nothing is Perfect, But Something is Just Right: Redevelopment of Inner-Ring Suburbs - Integrating Ecological Systems into Modern Urban Villages." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/96792.

Full text
Abstract:
The inner-ring suburbs of major metropolitan areas such as Washington, DC are either being redeveloped already or are poised to be redeveloped over the next several decades. The engineered 'gray' infrastructure networks in these areas, largely put in place between 100 and 75 years ago, are aging and reaching the end of their useful life. New developments are being funded by real estate investment trusts and developers and are being welcomed by municipalities and a public that are often genuinely inspired to create the more livable places of the future. Such redevelopments provide a unique opportunity not to just import new 'green' features, but to reimagine the fundamental connections between ecological, human, and non-human systems within the fabric of the larger community in a way that profoundly improves the cognitive experience of a place for the people and wildlife that reside there. The project begins by recognizing this opportunity and posing a question. Through thoughtful design, how can we bring people back into balance with their environment and back into touch with each other? By working with the cultural and built fabric of a place, the project proposes to reintroduce ecological systems and create places that might not be a perfect clean slate but are somehow just right for the people that live there. The project proceeds first by developing an understanding of the overall ecological context for each of four primary development corridors in Virginia, west of Washington, D.C. across the Potomac River. Then, key intersections between stream systems and the development corridors are identified and assessed to determine (a) whether any existing landscape framework surrounding the stream feature is in place and (b) whether the amenities necessary to support a walkable Urban Village center are present within a half mile in each direction along the route. The project proposes a design for revealing a continuous flow stream channel currently piped underground and creating integrated stormwater detention basins along the historic stream channel path at the headwaters of Spout Run in northern Arlington County Virginia. Stormwater mains downstream from the headwaters have already been deemed below capacity for the unprecedentedly intense storms that have become an annual occurrence. Here, the major transportation and development corridor, Route 29 (Lee Highway), just across the Potomac River west of Washington D.C, crosses Glebe Road and a unique geological formation, dubbed for this thesis as the 'Headwaters Plateau'. It is an intersection between historically significant transportation routes as well as a unique intersection between landscape and the built environment. Around the Headwaters Plateau, not just Spout Run but the waters of four other streams begin their path to the Potomac River, flowing through numerous Arlington County neighborhoods along the way. As redevelopment plans take shape for the Lee Highway corridor through northern Arlington County, this thesis proposes the unique intersection between the Headwaters Plateau at Spout Run Gap along Route 29 as the site for the core of a modern Urban Village, with the Plateau and the Spout Run Headwaters Channel as the landscape framework around which the redeveloping Village should be built.
Master of Landscape Architecture
This thesis proposes a design for revealing a continuous flow stream channel currently piped underground and creating integrated stormwater detention basins along the historic stream channel path at the headwaters of Spout Run in northern Arlington County, Virginia. Stormwater mains downstream from the headwaters have already been deemed below capacity for the unprecedentedly intense storms that have become an annual occurrence. Here, the major transportation and development corridor, Route 29 (Lee Highway), just across the Potomac River west of Washington D.C, crosses Glebe Road and a unique geological formation, dubbed for the purpose of this thesis as the 'Headwaters Plateau'. Through design, this thesis is an investigation of the potential integration of ecological systems such as stream hydrology into the design of modern 'Urban Villages' with the intent to create impactful individual experiences that provide a shared sense of connection within the community to its surrounding landscape. Throughout the country, redevelopment plans are focused on creating increased-density 'mixed-use' communities within existing urban and suburban areas - often called Urban Villages in the lexicon of the New Urbanism planning theory. This represents a move away from the predominant approach of separation of land use zoning practices. Such redevelopments provide a unique opportunity to not only import new 'green' features, but to reimagine the fundamental connections between ecological, human, and non-human systems within the fabric of the larger community in a way that profoundly improves the cognitive experience of a place for the people and wildlife that reside there.

Metamaterials are artificial materials which cannot be found in nature. The properties of these materials are not from the component but from the artificial structures in subwavelength scale. In this thesis, we use ebeam lithography to make the three dimensional erected split-ring resonators, and fabricate metamaterial perfect absorber by the three dimensional erected split-ring resonators. We adopt the metal-insulator-metal(MIM) structure. The button layer is a gold layer as a mirror, and the middle layer is ZnS-SiO2. The top layer adopts erected split-ring resonators to serve as the structure interacting with the incident light. The benefit of using the erected split-ring resonators is that the erected split-ring resonators can coupling the energy of electric and magnetic field at the same time which can enhance the absorption. Then we arranged the erected split-ring resonators in cross-shaped which makes this structure isotropic when direct illumination. Also, the electromagnetic response still keeps in a great absorption under both TM- and TE-polarized illumination even through the angle of incidence is greater than 60 degrees.

George Bernard Shaw was, and is still regarded as not only a renowned literatus and a playwright, but also a prolific writer of music discourses. His book on Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen, The Perfect Wagnerite, is full of profound and abundant details, making itself a crucial source to understand this colossal work of Wagner. With his rich knowledge in music and works of other literature, Shaw understood and thought about The Ring deeply with his unique style; his writing is smooth and humorous, on the other hand, how he wrote it and what he chose to talk about is thought-provoking. The main idea of this thesis is divided into two parts: “Shaw as a reader” and “Shaw as an author”. In the “Shaw as a reader” part, Shaw’s understanding of The Ring will be discussed, and then in the “Shaw as an author” part, some of the most valuable but potentially overlooked details will be dug out from the details of the author’s writing. Hopefully, this thesis will sort out Shaw’s aesthetic experience from “accepting a work” to “creating a work” and will provide a way to understand The Perfect Wagnerite, and thus to understand The Ring.

Abstract:
The plunger is a very critical component for the operation of hyper-compressors. To achieve long packing ring life it is necessary to select very hard materials for the plunger. As a consequence of the special materials used, the plunger is very brittle. To guarantee safe operation it is necessary to have perfect alignment to avoid bending stress that could cause plunger failure. The effects of the whole system, including packing rings and supporting crossheads were analyzed using a multi-body dynamic simulation to determine the maximum loads acting on the plunger. This analysis verified the viability of this critical component during abnormal machine operating conditions.

Abstract:
The light-activated shape memory polymer (LaSMP) is sensitive to ultraviolet light with specific wavelength. It is featured with dynamic stiffness. In this study, LaSMP is used to control the vibration of thin ring shells induced by external loading. Firstly the variation of LaSMP’s Young’s modulus is modeled. The mathematical model reflects the influence of light intensity, the decay coefficient and thickness of LaSMP. Besides, the model is suitable for LaSMPs with different reaction orders. Then, with Lamé parameters and the radii of rings the governing equations of the flexible ring laminated with LaSMP actuators are established. Love operators of LaSMP actuators are derived. Based on the mode expansion method, the modal forces of external loading and LaSMP actuators are given. The modal participation factors are analyzed with the modal forces. As the variation of Young’s modulus to the light intensity is nonlinear, the control effect of LaSMP actuators to common harmonic excitation is not perfect. Because the neural network control is effective to identify complex models, it is introduced to adjust the profile of light intensity. In the case study, the model of LaSMP’s Young’s modulus is validated with the experimental data. Then the forced harmonic responses of the ring are studied. For the mode n=2, the modal participation factor is reduced by 47.7% with the control of LaSMP actuator. To further enhance the control effect, the phase shift method is applied. With π/6 phase shift, the modal participation factor is reduced by 80.8%. With the neural network control method, the modal participation factor is cut down by 98.1%. The study shows that LaSMP actuator provides a new choice to control the forced vibration of flexible rings. It is also possible to apply LaSMP actuator to vibration control of other thin shell structures.

Abstract Plasma arc sprayed coatings are largely developed in Perfect Circle Europe because of the wide range of coating materials which ensure numerous tribological properties. Spraying parameters are of great importance in improving the coating structure and therefore the coating wear, adhesive, cohesive and corrosive resistances. The utilized plasma gas is first studied; designed experiments are then achieved to optimize the all spraying parameters. More than the spraying parameters, the powder formulation has a major influence on the coating tribological properties. Several powders are studied with the aim to reduce the ring-liner system wear. Tests on idealized samples coupled with engine tests help us to characterize the tribological behaviour of some molybdenum based coatings.

Abstract:
Abstract The topic of this work is the sequential use of Solid Immersion Lenses (SILs), created in bulk silicon in less than 20 minutes of processing time, using a focused ion beam and a bitmap milling process. Fibbed SILs can be removed by polishing, and the silicon back surface resumes a perfect planar shape for further backside analysis or the creation of more SILs. The influence of the progressively thinner sample thickness on the magnification of the SIL was analyzed. As fibbed SILs in this work are about 1.4 µm thick and have an additional magnification of 2.4, a second process after removal has been found to decrease magnification not more than 20%. The presence of interference rings in the SIL image could be almost completely removed by anti-reflective coating. Photon emission microscopy, performed using fibbed SILs, allowed to clearly distinguish between sources that were separated by 240 nm wide structures.

Full text
Abstract:
Bolted connections where proper alignment is critical usually require the use of lap joint flanges. The ability of lap joint flanges to swivel around the pipe enables the connection to be installed with no rotational stress applied to the attached piping and equipment. The majority of lap joint flanges on the Enbridge Pipelines system are ANSI 600 and are located at pump nozzles. In these applications, Enbridge Pipelines’ standard specifies the use of spiral wound gaskets with inner rings. Problems with lap joint flanges typically occur at the time of assembly. There are a number of factors that contribute to the challenges of properly seating a gasket in these joints: • Since the raised face is separate from the flange, there is some flex in the face that could unevenly load the gasket; • The flange may not be concentric with the raised face that is welded to the pipe because of clearance between the pipe OD and the flange ID. Using the bolt holes to align the flange does not necessarily ensure that the raised faces are aligned; • Line up pins are not recommended on pump nozzles in order to ensure that no stress is placed on the pump. Consequently, the bottom studs are used to center the gasket and it is possible for the gasket to sit in the stud threads, increasing the misalignment between the gasket windings and the flange raised faces; • Specified torque values for a given flange size may be too high for use in a lap joint application. The perfect bolt alignment in these joints may result in a lower nut factor and subsequently a higher bolt stress for a given torque value. All of these factors can cause damage to the windings on a spiral wound gasket, eventually resulting in a leak. This paper will discuss ways to mitigate these issues.
