Walker, Elsie. Code Unknown. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190495909.003.0005.

Abstract:
This chapter analyzes Code Unknown from a postcolonial perspective, with particular emphases on multiethnic voices, disempowered sonic presences, and cross-cultural possibilities of communication in the context of racial politics in contemporary France. The analysis considers how the sound track amplifies diverse characters’ choices to hear or not to hear, along with providing patterns and resonances that invite us to make interpretive leaps beyond the characters’ individual capabilities. Code Unknown reminds us how much our efforts to communicate matter, especially through the multiethnic, deaf-mute children who bookend the film with their extended efforts to physically “speak.” By contrast, many hearing-speaking adults of the film fail to speak or listen with patience, good will, or moral kindness, and sometimes with awful consequences. After considering many sonic moments of social discordance through the film, this chapter dwells on the tentative hope of those scenes in which the deaf-mute children create percussive music together.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the advent of gospel quartet singing in Chicago around the late 1920s, when Norman McQueen, Charles Bridges, and other quartet trainers migrated to Chicago from the South. McQueen, Bridges, and others introduced to Chicago a style of part singing that was earthier and more vocally percussive than what jubilee quartets were used to singing. Thanks to the quartet sound, gospel music became extremely popular nationally. This chapter documents the history of jubilee quartets in Chicago, beginning with the Standard Quartette followed by the Sunset Four, and proceeds with a discussion of the contributions of McQueen, Bridges, the Soul Stirrers, the Famous Blue Jays of Birmingham, and other gospel quartets to the growth of the Chicago quartet movement. Finally, it looks at some Chicago-based female quartets such as the Four Harmony Queens, the Crooning Sisters, the GoldenTone Female Quartet, the Four Loving Sisters, and the Jubilee Four Female Quartet.

Abstract:
“Maybe you won't like steel band. It's possible. But it's been said that the Pied Piper had a steel band helping him on his famous visit to Hamelin.” When the US Navy distributed this press release, anxieties and tensions of the impending Cold War felt palpable. As President Eisenhower cast his gaze toward Russia, the American people cast their ears to the Atlantic South, infatuated with the international currents of Caribbean music. Today, steel bands have become a global phenomenon; yet, in 1957 the exotic sound and the unique image of the US Navy Steel Band was one-of-a-kind. From 1957 until their disbandment in 1999, the US Navy Steel Band performed over 20,000 concerts worldwide. In 1973, the band officially moved headquarters from Puerto Rico to New Orleans and found the city and annual Mardi Gras tradition an apt musical and cultural fit. The band brought a significant piece of Caribbean artistic capital—calypso and steelband music—to the American mainstream. Its impact on the growth and development of steelpan music in America is enormous. This book uncovers the lost history of the US Navy Steel Band and provides an in-depth study of its role in the development of the US military's public relations, its promotion of goodwill, its recruitment efforts after the Korean and Vietnam wars, its musical and technological innovations, and its percussive propulsion of the American fascination with Latin and Caribbean music over the past century.

Abstract:
The shape of music is constantly fluid because nothing resonates the same twice. Every sound and shape is born and reborn. When music is printed on the page it takes shape in my imagination with the eye leading the way.As a performer, the environment is my instrument and percussion instruments are my tools to deliver the sound. I can provide all the musical ingredients for the environment I am immersed in. The acoustic will mould the sound meal which is thus delivered to the audience. The members of the audience will have differing perspectives on the sound and shape according to where they are situated and their emotional state at the time....
