Oughton, Karen. "Drag performance, identity, and cultural perception." Thesis, University of Hull, 2009. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:2573.

Abstract:
This is the first holistic study of English cross-dressed performers. It will situate drag performers within their cultural context in order to establish how their concerns, motivations, employment, communities, friendships, self-perception and artistic ambitions impact on their performances. Furthermore, it utilises performance and ethnographic analysis of a number of artistes to demonstrate how modern drag politicises communities and forms an accessible critique of social roles. Furthermore, it aims to reunite Queer Theory with the realities of its effects on society. The first chapter establishes the study’s position within the overarching framework of Queer Theory. A troupe of drag performers are examined in light of Judith Butler’s theories of performativity to elucidate how the social aspects of gender can be developed. Then, Kate Bornstein’s work is used to illustrate how individuals can use these identities as a conscious method of self-development. Following this, the second chapter explores the social role drag performers have, sometimes inadvertently, chosen. Developing the theories of the interrelationship between belief, LGBTQ sexuality and otherness purported by Kate Bornstein, it asserts the educational and social role that can be taken by drag performers. The third chapter focuses on the messages that these LGTBQ shaman (a theory developed from Laurence Senelick’s work) convey to their community via performance. Case studies illustrate how the performers tailor their acts to politicise their often apathetic audiences. This work is extrapolated in the fourth chapter, which focuses on the community-wide Pride Parade performances. The Rabelaisian carnivalesque is used to argue that the carnivals encourage the audience to review their gender development, revitalising the culture. Finally, the fifth chapter demonstrates how these differing theoretical strands enable televised drag performance to challenge censure by questioning ‘otherness’ itself. This is achieved with reference to horror theory, camp and the performances of Danny La Rue, amongst others, and the cultural impact of the programme Little Britain (2003). The thesis demonstrates that drag is, in fact, a dialogue that can engage and politicise mainstream culture.

Abstract:
There is no doubt that security mechanisms, such as authentication, are required in Information and Communication Technology, but they come at a price: Users need to spend additional time and effort to authenticate themselves. With this in mind, user perception of authentication is an important factor for successful use of authentication solutions. If users perceive an authentication procedure as time-consuming and difficult, they might ignore or try to bypass it. Therefore, user-perceived Quality of Experience (QoE) should be investigated. QoE is a challenging area as it, in this case, covers network performance and security as well as Human Computer Interaction and user experience. Throughout this work, authentication performance is investigated, starting with a framework for evaluating security architectures and authentication solutions in general. Criteria for user-friendliness, security and simplicity are described and the evaluation methods span from theoretical to practical, and qualitative to quantitative methods. The latter two aspects are investigated by a study of user experience of web authentication with OpenID using the EAP-SIM authentication method. The user experiments resulted in several user models of QoE. One particular user model for QoE, the exponential relationship between QoE and network level performance, was then used in further experiments on performance evaluation of OpenID authentication using EAP-SIM. The latter was done to determine the decisive factors for QoE of the authentication method in use. The results from these experiments show that the combination of OpenID and EAP-SIM for authentication over a secure tunnel is not appropriate to use over networks with high delays. The latter implies the need for improvements of the authentication procedure of OpenID using EAP-SIM, which should be addressed in the future. The user model of QoE obtained in this study will even help to quantify the performance aspects of future authentication procedures.

Abstract:
Educational Psychology
Ph.D.
Research conclusions concerning predictors of academic success have been, at best, less than convincing. In fact, these conclusions are more conflicting or mixed when emotional constructs are used. As a result, modern curriculum developers as well as classroom instructors seem to deemphasize, if not ignore, the role of the affective domain in student learning. This is rather surprising considering that psychology continues to play such an important role in education. For decades, researchers have disagreed about the role played by three primary emotional concepts: self-esteem, parental involvement and student perception as predictors of students' academic success. This study attempts to determine which of these constructs, singly or in combination, can predict students' academic success and if the inclusion of any from among a selected group of demographic variables - socio-economic status, gender, ethnicity and student grade level- can alleviate or at least mitigate the discrepancies of prior research conclusions. A survey using a five point Likert scale was developed to collect data from 164 students in grades 3-7 in a select Philadelphia Charter School. The data were analyzed using Varimax Factor Rotation, Pearson Product-Moment Correlations and Multiple Regression to find answers to four research questions. The results of the analyses using only the emotional constructs were not significant; however, when the demographic constructs were included, specifically the students' grade levels, significant results were found. This study does not settle the controversy over whether or not the emotional constructs are authentic predictors of students' academic success. Nevertheless, the study does give insight into the significance of including the demographic factor of student grade level as a predictor of student academic success. Consequently, the results of this study suggest that any research using emotional constructs to predict the academic success of primary school students should include the various grade levels of the students.

Abstract:
Sankofa, a proverb from the Akan language of Ghana, is one attribute of Ghanaian culture that lives on in Black America. Sankofa, symbolically depicted as a bird reaching backwards to scoop an egg, translates into English as "reach back and get it." As an autobiographical artist, I continue to "reach back" into black history. I research the biographies and autobiographies of other Black Americans--the stories that chronicle the lives of those who came before me. I research urban cultures and contemporary expressions of identity and courage. Through the creation of installation and performance art, I have learned to incorporate this research into my own expressions my visions of hope, discontent, healing and beauty.

Ranchod, Shameem Roshnee. "Public sector pharmacists' perception of the public sector performance management system." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/596.

Full text
Abstract:
Performance Management aims to develop the employee and ensure that the work which the employee does is in line with organisational goals. However, many managers and employees do not like performance management systems and very often, for this reason, such a system does not succeed in meeting the organisation’s goals. The aim of this study was to determine the perceptions towards the performance management system of pharmacists working in the public sector. A questionnaire was compiled and pharmacists working in all public sector hospitals, provincial and municipal clinics and medical depots were asked to complete the questionnaire. The response rate was 66 percent. Seventy three percent of respondents had never undergone a performance evaluation, 75 percent stated it did not motivate them, 62.5 percent felt it did not improve poor performance, 90.6 percent felt the Performance Appraisal System did not reward good performance sufficiently and 63.6 percent felt it did not help with career progression. Seventy eight percent believed that the Performance Appraisal System did not effectively measure the pharmacists’ performance, and 82 percent felt that the System needed to be developed further. At least four evaluations should have been completed per year, yet 85 percent of respondents had experienced three or fewer evaluations since the System had been introduced. The analysis of the responses indicated that there was great dissatisfaction with the current performance management system. A few of the reasons are that the system in place did not effectively measure the pharmacists performance, that additional work done was not recognised, and that the process was extremely time-consuming. It may be concluded that the government needs to address the current problems being experienced with this system, as at present, it is not meeting the objectives it was intended to meet.

Tirovolas, Anna Kristina. "Applied music perception and cognition: predicting sight-reading performance." Thesis, McGill University, 2013. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=116886.

Abstract:
AbstractThis research sought to translate three standardized assessment measures of phonological processing known to be related to text reading, into experimental tasks that measure music processing. The primary aim of this thesis was to ascertain the relationship between these musically-adapted tasks and sight-reading performance in music. A broader goal was to explore and compare task performance across text and music, thereby informing a larger issue in cognitive and educational psychology: the relationship between music and language. In this manuscript-based thesis, there are six chapters, including three manuscripts (one previously published) that contribute to these goals. The first manuscript, published in the journal Music Perception, is a 26-year review of the field of music perception and cognition. The categorical and bibliometric analysis sought to document the longitudinal course of empirical studies in the journal Music Perception, by examining 384 empirical articles, as well as the full set of 578 articles, published between 1983 and 2010. The review suggested that only 9% of music perception studies use any assessment measures (mostly standardized tests, but also measures of musical ability). An increase over time in the use of assessment measures (ß = .40, p < .05) as data collection instruments was observed. It was thus inferred that the development of tasks which measure musical ability would be important to the continued advancement of psychometrics in the field of music perception and cognition. The second and third manuscripts were devoted to designing measures of music processing based on standardized tests of text reading. The objective was to search for relationships between the language and music tasks themselves, as well as testing their capacity to predict errors in musical sight-reading (SR) performance. In other words, an investigation of whether musically-adapted tasks, initially developed specifically for the assessment of text reading, would be significant predictors of SR performance. The second manuscript explored the effectiveness of the Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) task in predicting SR by testing 41 participants: pianists aged 18 to 36. For all RAN tasks, response times (interonset intervals of vocal responses) were used to predict errors in sight reading performance of piano music. Correlational analyses revealed several significant associations between performance on standard RAN and music RAN tasks. Regression analyses revealed that the RAN letter task was the most consistent predictor of SR, with music RAN tasks adding additional explanatory power to the model. These findings suggested that processing specific to musical symbols may underlie aspects of SR performance, but that an already existing standardized task typically used for text reading could be more useful in predicting SR ability. The third manuscript reports an experiment in which musical tasks were designed to mirror two phonological awareness tasks from the "Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing" (CTOPP), Elision and Blending Words. Participants were 25 pianists, aged 18 to 53. Regression analyses revealed the importance of music training and working memory in SR, and showed that performance on a musical blending task was important to the prediction of SR performance in certain cases.

Abstract:
The merits of veteran affirmative action placement and review of performance by management were the rationale of this study. The mismatch theory was applied to explain when an individual receives a favor from affirmative action but is unable to keep pace with others performing in the same role. This quantitative quasi-experimental study was used to examine what differences exist between managerial perceptions of job-related performance and employee designations. A series of hypothetical scenarios were administered to respondents using vignettes that describe the actions taken by employees regarding an unfair labor practice. A paired t test was conducted in this quantitative research to assess if there were differences in the scores of the hypothetical characters specifically as it pertained to their veteran designations. From a 107 person sample and an inclusion criteria of federal government managers who manage attorneys hired with and without veteran-related affirmative action assistance, an analysis included conducting a test for 24 different pairs that compared the characters' aggregate scores and specific performance measures. The test showed that there were no real differences in the ratings of the employees after disclosing their veteran status to the raters. This study indicated greater insights on whether management can identify actual differences in employee performance or if the 2 designations themselves, veteran and nonveteran, are the driving forces of their comprehension and subsequent action. Positive social change may emanate from this study because the insights revealed offer a greater context for the effectiveness of affirmative action programs like veteran preference and if greater controls and/or training needed to be implemented to fortify their effectiveness.

Decker, Jennie Jo. "Display spatial luminance nonuniformities: effects on operator performance and perception." Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/54510.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examined the effects of display spatial luminance nonuniformities on operator performance and perception. The objectives of this research were to develop definitions of nonuniformity, develop accurate measurement techniques, determine acceptable levels of nonuniformities, and to develop a predictive model based on user performance data. Nonuniformities were described in terms of spatial frequency, amplitude, display luminance, gradient shape, and number of dimensions. Performance measures included a visual random search task and a subjective measure to determine users' perceptions of the nonuniformities. Results showed that users were able to perform the search task in the presence of appreciable nonuniformities. lt was concluded that current published recommendations for acceptable levels of nonuniformities are adequately specified. Results from the subjective task showed that users were sensitive to the presence of nonuniformities in terms of their perceptions of uniformity. Specifically, results showed that as spatial frequency increased, perceived uniformity ratings increased. That is, users rated nonuniformities to be less noticeable. As amplitude and display luminance increased, the users' ratings of perceived uniformity decreased; that is, they rated the display as being farther from a uniform field. There were no differences in impressions between a sine and triangle gradient shape, while a square gradient shape resulted in lower ratings of perceived uniformity. Few differences were attributed to the dimension (1-D versus 2- D) of the nonuniformity and results were inconclusive because dimension was confounded with the display luminance. Nonuniformities were analyzed using Fourier techniques to determine the amplitudes of the coefficients for each nonuniformity pattern. These physical descriptors were used to develop models to predict users' perceptions of the nonuniformities. A few models yielded good fits of the subjective data. lt was concluded that the method for describing and measuring nonuniformities was successful. Also, the results of this research were in strong concurrence with previous research in the area of spatial vision.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPA) --University of Limpopo, 2012
While performance management is a widely used system in many countries, in South Africa the Public Service Regulations (2001) is a base for a Performance Management and Development System in the public service. The Public Service Regulation (2001) gives effect to performance management systems for purposes of managing performance of individual employees, framework for performance assessment, the outcome and communication of assessment results, and managing unsatisfactory performance, as well as providing a framework on incentives for good performance. Each province is therefore, required to adapt the Performance Management System to its environment to ensure the implementation of the provisions of the Public Service Regulation, (2001). However, as cited by Letsoalo (2010), the introduction of a system of managing performance was received with different reactions, both positive and negative, by the vast majority of employees in the public sector. As a result, this study investigated the attitudes of individual employees towards performance management and development system. The main aim of this research is to present the conclusion drawn from the study, as well as make recommendations emanating from the analysis of information gathered in literature review and through questionnaires completed by departmental staff in the Department of Culture, Sports and Recreation. In identifying different reactions by civil servants to Performance Management and Development System, the study placed an effort in probing different perceptions on Performance Management and Development System amongst employees in the Department of Culture, Sports and Recreation in Mpumalanga Province. There are varying perceptions demonstrated by respondents regarding questions posed to them on the Performance Management and Development System as implemented in the Department of Culture, Sports and Recreation in Mpumalanga Province. There is a perception that the Performance Management and Development System is a penalizing tool used by supervisors on their subordinates and that official’s performance is not duly acknowledged as is supposed to. There is persisting conflict between supervisors and their subordinates resulting from supervisors rating their subordinates without their input, submission of performance results is for compliance It is held in this that the Department of Culture, Sports and Recreation must ensure that effective communication of the system to the rest of the employees of the provincial government is maintained so as to allow employees to understand the system and what is expected of them, the development of the implementation capacity internally through the Performance Management and Development System Champions will in any regard, and as such limit inconsistencies during application of performance management and development system which impacts negatively on the overall performance of the organization.

Abstract:
Telephones are an integral part of everyday life in today's society. It is well known that hearing impaired people have difficulty understanding speech on the telephone. The ability to use the telephone is commonly reported as one of the many benefits of cochlear implantation. Assessment for a cochlear implant (CI) includes a variety of aspects related to communication and hearing ability. Included in the case history, mention is made whether the person can use the telephone. The purpose of the present study was firstly to identify if the inability to use the telephone could be used a predictor for suitability for a cochlear implant. It was also purposed to determine if telephone ability could be assessed by self-reported measures. The participants were 13 severe to profoundly hearing impaired people who had previously undergone candidacy assessment for a cochlear implant. Each participant was evaluated on their use and understanding of speech on the telephone. Participants were separated into two groups: those who were candidates for a cochlear implant and those who were not. Speech perception testing was evaluated using a recording of CUNY sentences on the telephone. Results indicated that cochlear implant candidates correctly perceived a significantly lower number of words on the telephone than non-candidates. Use of the telephone was evaluated using a 51-item questionnaire. Results indicated that there was no significant difference in self-reported use of the telephone between cochlear implant candidates and non-candidates. The differences in speech perception understanding on the telephone were most likely due to the overall better hearing levels of the non-candidates. The clinical implications of the present study are considered.

Abstract:
Artificial agents and avatars are designed with a large variety of face and body configurations. Some of these (such as virtual characters in films) may be highly realistic and human-like, while others (such as social robots) have considerably more limited expressive means. In both cases, human motion serves as the model and inspiration for the non-verbal behavior displayed. This thesis focuses on increasing the expressive capacities of artificial agents and avatars using two main strategies: 1) improving the automatic capturing of the most communicative areas for human communication, namely the face and the fingers, and 2) increasing communication clarity by proposing novel ways of eliciting clear and readable non-verbal behavior. The first part of the thesis covers automatic methods for capturing and processing motion data. In paper A, we propose a novel dual sensor method for capturing hands and fingers using optical motion capture in combination with low-cost instrumented gloves. The approach circumvents the main problems with marker-based systems and glove-based systems, and it is demonstrated and evaluated on a key-word signing avatar. In paper B, we propose a robust method for automatic labeling of sparse, non-rigid motion capture marker sets, and we evaluate it on a variety of marker configurations for finger and facial capture. In paper C, we propose an automatic method for annotating hand gestures using Hierarchical Hidden Markov Models (HHMMs). The second part of the thesis covers studies on creating and evaluating multimodal databases with clear and exaggerated motion. The main idea is that this type of motion is appropriate for agents under certain communicative situations (such as noisy environments) or for agents with reduced expressive degrees of freedom (such as humanoid robots). In paper D, we record motion capture data for a virtual talking head with variable articulation style (normal-to-over articulated). In paper E, we use techniques from mime acting to generate clear non-verbal expressions custom tailored for three agent embodiments (face-and-body, face-only and body-only).

Henriksen, Frank Ekeberg. "Space in electroacoustic music : composition, performance and perception of musical space." Thesis, City University London, 2002. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/7653/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis concerns space as an essential element of expression and communication in electroacoustic music. It shows that musical space is a complex term which refers to many different aspects of composition, performance and perception of electroacoustic music. It is argued that space is a compound musical element which can be integrated into the compositional structure to a degree where space becomes the primary canier of meaning in the work, and that the creation and interpretation of this meaning is a result of learned cultural aspects of interpersonal communication in terms of personal space and territoriality. Furthermore, the close relationship between electroacoustic music composition and technology is acknowledged, and the influence of available technology on aesthetic choices and decision making with regard to spatial composition and performance is taken into consideration. The structure for the investigation is based on a model of musical space comprising three basic levels: 1) spatial properties of individual sounds in terms of intrinsic space, extrinsic space and spectral space, 2) the spatial arrangement of individual sounds and events into a composed space which is played in, and becomes affected by, the listening space, and 3) the perceived space, which constitutes the listening experience of the combination of composed space and listening space. A framework for describing and analysing spatial elements in electroacoustic composition is proposed. The discussion and findings are largely based on my experience as a listener, composer and performer of electroacoustic music, and in addition finds support in research on auditory perception, particularly Jens Blauert's work on spatial hearing and Albert Bregman's auditory scene theory, as well as Denis Smalley's spectromorphological theory, James Tenney's writings on perception-based music listening and analysis, and Edward T. Hall's investigations into space as an element of non-verbal communication.

Donnelly, Robyn Claire Annabel. "Gender differences in undergraduate students' performance, perception and participation in physics." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/9968.

Full text
Abstract:
Research has been undertaken to obtain a thorough understanding of the existence and degree of gender disparity in students' participation and performance in introductory university physics courses at the University of Edinburgh. The research on this topic has focused on three main subject areas: the proportion of male and female students enrolled in undergraduate physics courses and their reasons for choosing to study this subject, gender differences in student performance and, Finally, how students' attitudes and beliefs towards studying physics change after a period of instruction. Gaining an insight into students' attitudes towards studying and learning physics, as well as their conceptual understanding of the topics being assessed, can draw attention to potential areas of weakness which can be targeted in future teaching. This thesis comprises a comprehensive review of the current situation surrounding male and female participation in the undergraduate physics degree programme at the University of Edinburgh in comparison to other STEM subjects, as well as a description of factors potentially influencing the gender performance in physics. With respect to student performance, conceptual understanding tests have been used as evaluation tools to measure the effectiveness of introducing interactive engagement, such as Peer Instruction, into teaching environments in order to improve student performance, as well as a means by which male and female learning gains could be compared. Results indicate that female students show a lower level of conceptual understanding of Newtonian Mechanics than male students when entering the degree programme, and that this gender difference remains after a period of instruction. Qualitative interviews highlight the preconceptions of first year undergraduate physics students with regards to Newtonian concepts of force and motion and demonstrate the range of misconceptions held by both male and female students. The research presented here compares male and female performance on different forms of assessment; coursework, laboratory assessments, examinations and peer instruction in-lecture questions. Results indicate that while examination scores show no distinct gender trends, female students show consistently higher coursework scores compared to males across physics, chemistry and biology first year courses. Analysis of Peer Instruction questions implemented in the introductory physics lectures suggest that such teaching methodologies have had an overall positive effect on class performance, although there is evidence that differences exist between male and female performance on individual questions. Students' attitudes towards learning physics have been measured at under- graduate level in order to evaluate the level of 'expert-like' thinking of first year undergraduate students. One notable finding of this study has been the lack of decline in the `expert-like' thinking after a semester of teaching in recent years, where previously a decline had been witnessed in this expert-like thinking. This result coincides with a change in the format of lectures to a 'flipped- classroom' approach and may have implications for the introduction of new teaching methods. As well as focusing on the progression of undergraduate students' attitudes, this study has evaluated UK academics' attitudes towards physics. This has enabled a UK level of `expert-like' thinking to be established, with gender differences between male and female academics identified. Students' opinions of the transferable skills gained and their experiences during their degree programme are discussed. Each of the gender topics discussed in this thesis has provided a deeper insight into gender differences in student attainment at undergraduate level which could have implications for the further improvement of future courses.

Singer, Carey. "Student Perception of Social Loafing in University Teamwork." Master's thesis, Faculty of Commerce, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/31263.

Abstract:
This study investigated perceptions of social loafing in undergraduate student teams at a South African university. Student participants, randomly assigned to teams, received coursework instruction about team dynamics (including social loafing) and worked together for 12 weeks on a team assignment that was graded at the end of the semester. Students (n = 243) wrote individual reflections on the reasons for social loafing in student teams. Some (n = 24) also participated in an experiential social loafing exercise. These two sources of qualitative data were used in the development of a survey questionnaire, which was completed by 229 students. Fifty-four percent of the student participants (n = 229) perceived social loafing to have occurred in their teams. Four components of perceived social loafing behaviour were identified using factor analysis: unavailability, poor work quality, tech loafing and discussion non-contribution. Loafer apathy (a general lack of care or interest) predicted significant variance in each of the four loafing behaviours and social compensation. Team performance (assignment grades) was not related to the perceived presence social loafing in a team. Rather than reducing effort in response to perceived social loafing (the sucker effect), a social compensation effect occurred in the perceived presence of poor work quality. Effective leadership moderated the relationship between loafer apathy and tech loafing as well as loafer apathy and social compensation. Practical implications and recommendations for future research are presented.

Abstract:
Simulators are more and more used in industry because they help for making and testing objects. Like in other domains, simulators use stereoscopic screen to get closer natural vision and artificial vision. However, stereoscopy create some physiological problems like vergence-accommodation conflict. This conflict is one of the main cause of visual strain while viewing stereoscopic contents. In a first part, we will see some methods to reduce visual fatigue due to vergence-accommodation conflict. Then, we will propose, test and validate a new method: a blur in peripheral vision. This treatment reduce eye strain. In addition, we found out that the smaller the sharp area is, the more effective the treatment is. In the second part, we will focus on the shape perception in stereoscopic vision and how to improve it. The main contribution will be to take into account the user’s gaze point in the rendering process to reproduce the effect of the gaze direction in natural vision and improve the perception of the virtual environment. This camera convergence create deformations – called vertical parallaxes – on the screen in peripheral vision. This new method improve shape perception if objects are located close to the user

Abstract:

Layton, James R. "The experience and perception of duration in three contemporary performances." Thesis, University of Chester, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10034/620372.

Abstract:
I argue in this thesis that qualitative duration (viewed in opposition to the construct of quantitative clock-time) can be experienced through performance encounters that challenge smooth consumption. In a socially accelerated culture, where to do more in less time is the measure of a productive life, one’s connection with the ‘real’ time of duration is diminished. To challenge this premise, I have used an autoethnographic approach to explore an experience of duration conceived via the work of French philosopher Henri Bergson, who posits that “pure duration [is that which] excludes all idea of juxtaposition, reciprocal externality, and extension” (Bergson, 1903/1999, p. 26). In other words, Bergson asserts that duration defies quantitative measurement. I argue that the Bergsonian experience of duration offers a pause from social acceleration and effects a transformation for the spectator in the form of peak-experience, flow, and communitas.

Abstract:
My research explores the intimate relationship between object, language and perception in Shakespeare's plays. Using an analytical approach inspired by basic principles of phenomenology, I consider how Shakespeare's language influences our perception of real and non-present stage properties and set: how he imbues imaginary objects with an almost palpable sense of presence, and engineers our perception of onstage objects, subtly shaping and augmenting visual stimuli with verbal imagery. Through close reading centred on five plays, I explore how Shakespeare's fusion of word and object is engineered to evince a vividly visceral response to what we see, hear and imagine. My research poses the following questions: how does Shakespeare prepare the mind of a watching and listening audience to perceive more than may actually appear on stage? How far can illusion, created by language and imagination, supplement what an audience might see? How is language used to blur the boundaries between subject and object, transcending the mere exchange of characteristics? Textual examples have been selected from Shakespeare's tragedies and histories. My study does not encompass Shakespeare's comedies, for − though they offer rich opportunity for analysis − such work would require a separate approach, geared to this very different genre.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates cross-modal interactions in auditory and visual perception, focusing on the perception of expressive musical performances. A primary aim of the work is to advance knowledge pertaining to how and when musicians' body movements influence an observer's overall experience. Three studies, comprising two multi-factor experimental investigations and one theoretical contribution, explore the multi-modal experience of musical performance. The two empirical chapters investigate, respectively, (1) the real-time experience of musical structure and musical emotion, comparing unimodal and multimodal conditions, and (2) the multidimensional structure of affective responses to musical performance, as a function of sensory modalities and performance intentions. The theoretical chapter develops a class of quantitative models for studying real-time phenomena in music (in particular) and time-series data (in general). An original contribution of this thesis is to quantify the ways in which the auditory and visual components of musical performance contribute singly and in interaction with one another to overall experience. The studies show that seeing a musician performing can augment, complement and interact with the auditory component to significantly influence music perception. These results are relevant to, and inform theories on, multi-sensory integration, emotion, and music cognition, as well as performance practice and audio-video media.

Elton, Kim Cecile. "Tango, from Perception to Creation: A Pianist’s Quest to Capture and Embody Tango in Performance and Composition." Thesis, Griffith University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/366016.

Full text
Abstract:
Tango is an established genre in the international music scene, as exemplified by the compositions of Horacio Salgán, Mariano Mores, Astor Piazzolla and others. However, commercially produced Tango sheet music, with melodies and harmonic changes, does not fully correlate with the music expression one hears performed by musicians – Tangueros from Montevideo and Buenos Aires. The main problem is that the distinctive music expressions that elicit emotional responses and appear to define the uniqueness of tango, are not notated on the page. This constitutes a learning challenge for the musician who is foreign to the genre and its original context. Therefore, she must attune her perception of what may be missing and implement a more robust notation of those emotion inducing features. This need is justified as the musician is seeking to compose, arrange and perform music utilizing standard music notation. This thesis presents an attempt to bridge the gap, through performance-centred learning, to reveal Tango’s inherent characteristics. The outcome will give an outsider the opportunity to develop skills in Tango music to achieve a performance style closer to the genre’s authentic musical practice. Therefore, contextual knowledge and mastery of Tango piano vocabulary in an accessible form provides an avenue to play, arrange and compose in a manner that reflects a different approach to understanding pianism in the Argentinean Tango.

Abstract:
(Uncorrected OCR) Abstract of dissertation entitled Tone Perception Performance of Cantonese-speaking Prelingually Deaf Children with Cochlear Implants submitted by Angela On-Chi Wong for the degree of Master of Sciences in Audiology at the University of Hong Kong in May 2000 The present study was a preliminary investigation on the tone perception performance of pre lingually hearing-impaired children with cochlear implant. Seventeen native Cantonese-speaking participants were invited in this research. They have been using the Nucleus multichannel cochlear implant with coding strategy of either SPEAK or ACE. Errors from the tone discrimination and the tone identification tests were examined and a tone confusion matrix was plotted. Results revealed that the correct scores for both discrimination and identification tests were slightly above chance levels, indicating that prelingually hearing-impaired children using cochlear implants were able to benefit from SPEAK or ACE strategies for Cantonese tone perception, though the benefit was small. Tonal error and confusion patterns were discussed and some contributing possibilities were suggested. Relationships between tone perception VII performance and other variables such as age at implantation, duration of implantation, frequency of training and overall auditory performance were also examined. The paper also discussed other possibilities that may contribute to tone confusion. VIII
