Abstract:
Acquired behavioral changes have essentially been described in advanced multiple sclerosis (MS). The present study was designed to determine whether behavioral modifications specifically related to the MS pathological process could be identified in the initial phase of the disease, as compared to control patients with chronic, relapsing and progressive inflammatory disorders not involving the central nervous system (CNS). Eighty-eight early MS patients (Expanded Disability Status Scale score ≤ 2.5) and 48 controls were tested. Perceived changes by informants in behavioral control, goal-directed behavior, decision making, emotional expression, insight and interpersonal relationships were assessed using the Iowa Scale of Personality Change (ISPC). Executive behavioral disturbances were screened using the Dysexecutive Questionnaire (DEX). The mean change between the premorbid and postmorbid ISPC ratings was similar in the MS [12.2 (SD 15.6)] and in the control [11.5 (SD 15.1)] group. The perceived behavioral changes (PBCs) most frequently reported in both groups werelack of stamina,lability/moodiness,anxiety,vulnerability to stressandirritability. Pathological scores in the DEX were also similar in both groups. Correlations between PBCs and DEX scores were different in MS and control groups. MS patients with cognitive impairment had a marginally higher number of PBCs than control patients (p= 0.056) and a significantly higher DEXp score (p= 0.04). These results suggest that (1) PBCs occurring in early MS patients were not different from those induced by comparable chronic non-CNS disorders, (2) qualitative differences in the relationship between behavioral symptoms and executive-behavioral changes may exist between MS and control groups, and (3) behavioral symptoms seem associated with cognitive deficits in MS. We further plan to assess these observations longitudinally.

Abstract:
The objective of this study is to determine the role of perceived belief control and intention in the behavioural emotion regulation of Pakistani students. Indeed, the behaviour of every student is different from that of each other, and due to this behavioural change, every individual has a different value. A five-point Likert scale questionnaire was developed to determine the relationship between innovative machine learning behaviour and behavioural emotion regulation. The study found that innovative machine learning is critical with the mediating role of perceived belief control and intention to influence students' behavioural emotions in higher educational institutes. In the same way, the study has significant theoretical implications as it contributes to knowledge in a unique framework. Meanwhile, the practical implications of the research are also important to consider for better control and regulation of human behaviour with the help of perceived belief control and intention. The directions for future studies are also presented in the last section of the study.

Abstract:
Background:Statistical reviews of the theories of reasoned action (TRA) and planned behavior (TPB) applied to exercise are limited by methodological issues including insufficient sample size and data to examine some moderator associations. Methods:We conducted a meta-analytic review of 111 TRA/TPB and exercise studies and examined the influences of five moderator variables. Results:We found that: a) exercise was most strongly associated with intention and perceived behavioral control; b) intention was most strongly associated with attitude; and c) intention predicted exercise behavior, and attitude and perceived behavioral control predicted intention. Also, the time interval between intention to behavior; scale correspondence; subject age; operationalization of subjective norm, intention, and perceived behavioral control; and publication status moderated the size of the effect. Conclusions:The TRA/TPB effectively explained exercise intention and behavior and moderators of this relationship. Researchers and practitioners are more equipped to design effective interventions by understanding the TRA/TPB constructs.

Abstract:
During the COVID-19 pandemic, people have reduced the frequency of going out, and need to engage in health behaviors at home. Home-based exercise has aroused people’s attention. This paper aims to examine the influencing mechanism of health consciousness on home-based exercise during the COVID-19 pandemic. A questionnaire method was used to select 449 Chinese respondents on an online platform; the questionnaire includes a health consciousness scale, health life goal scale, perceived behavioral control scale, and the home-based exercise scale. A T-test was used to conduct differential analysis. The hierarchical regression analysis method was used to examine the relationship between health consciousness and home-based exercise, and the Hayes’ SPSS PROCESS macro was used to test mediating effect. The results show that there are significant differences in home-based exercise with respect to gender, age, and marital status. Health consciousness has a significant positive effect on home-based exercise. Perceived behavioral control acts as the mediator between health consciousness and home-based exercise. Health consciousness can influence home-based exercise through health life goals and perceived behavioral control in turn. This paper takes a home-based exercise survey, and expands the theoretical research of home-based exercise. The findings suggest that people should pay attention to promoting the transformation of health consciousness into home-based exercise. It provides enlightenment for people to adopt health behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract:
To enhance the job performance of engineers in the oil and gas sector, their knowledge and skills should be constantly updated through knowledge sharing. Perceived behavioural control and attitude have been identified as factors that contribute to effective knowledge sharing among employees. However, very little is known about perceived behavioural control and attitude toward knowledge sharing in the Iraqi oil and gas sector. Therefore, this study investigates the relationship between engineer’s perceived behavioural control and attitude on their intention towards knowledge sharing in public oil and gas firms in Iraq. To participate in the study, 240 engineers from oil and gas companies in Iraq were randomly selected. A questionnaire designed in a Likert scale format was used for the data collection. The data were analysed using descriptive statistical analysis and Correlation analysis. The results of the analysis show that there is a positive relation between engineer’s perceived behavioural control and attitude on their intention towards knowledge sharing in public oil and gas firms in Iraq. The study makes some recommendations on how to increase engineers’ perceived behavioural control and attitude and eventually increase their intention towards knowledge sharing.

Abstract:
MS is a significant source of stress for many individuals. It is a chronic disease. The onset most often is in young adulthood. There are no preventative measures. Treatment is limited and often ineffective. For many the disease is characterised by unpredictable periods of remission and exacerbation of symptoms. When the 'flares' are frequent or of long duration, there is often poor coping, including depressive symptoms and impaired quality of life. Coping is an important component in the management of this disease. Perception plays a major role in coping. Literature search showed no evidence of any research on the topic of perception of coping and chronic illness. The aim of this study is to devise an appropriate measure of perception of coping in patients suffering from MS. The study is divided into 2 major parts. Part 1 is the devising of the scale. Part 2 is designed to establish reliability and validity of the scale. This part of the study is also designed to investigate the effectiveness of conventional rehabilitation programmes in altering the coping perception. For the first part of the study 20 subjects were recruited from the MS Register and kept at the Douglas Grant Rehabilitation Unit. The second part of the study also comprised 20 subjects and these subjects were recruited when they were referred for rehabilitation to the Unit. The validity of the Scale was attempted by using the HAD scale, GHQ, and the COPE scale. Validation of the PCS as well as the impact of CBT intervention were attempted with a group of chronic pain patients. Reliability of the scale was established but not the validity. The reasons for this are discussed.

Abstract:
A disproportionate number of African American women are at risk for illness and mortality due to obesity. The aim of this study was to explore perceived behavioral control (PBC), stress, body image, and exercise intentions (EI) using the theory of planned behavior (TPB) as the primary theoretical framework. The TPB is a leading model in health research to predict behavioral intentions, yet its application to the general female African American population is lacking. Seventy-nine African American women were sampled utilizing a cross-sectional, online survey method. A series of bivariate correlations tested the relationships among PBC, stress, body image, age, and physical activity with EI as the dependent variable. Findings showed that PBC and EI were significantly correlated (r = .62, p<.001). There was also a significant correlation between physical activity level and EI (r = .34, p=.003). Stress, body image, and age were not significantly correlated with EI. A standard multiple regression analysis was used to test if PBC, stress, and body image significantly predicted EI. PBC and stress explained 42% of the variance (R-² = .42, F(3,75)=18.49, p<.001). These findings highlight the importance of strengthening PBC beliefs and reducing stress to enhance successful weight loss. Social change implications include a culturally-sensitive approach to weight loss that could help decrease obesity rates and related health problems.

Full text
Abstract:

Background: There is a growing need for skilled gerontological nursing care. Nursing students often fail to appreciate the importance of implementing gerontological nursing competencies.

Purpose: The problem is that nursing education research on students' attitudes about gerontology has been hampered by a lack of valid and reliable instruments.

Theoretical framework. This study is based on and tests the propositions of the theory of planned behavior.

Methods. Qualitative interviews were conducted to determine the terms used to describe the constructs by the target population. Using these terms, an instrument was developed and subjected to tests for psychometric estimates. A pretest-posttest design was used to test the impact of an educational intervention on students' attitudes.

Results. The instrument demonstrated acceptable reliability and validity. Students' scores increased significantly for attitude, subjective norm and behavioral intention regarding implementing gerontological competencies from pretest to posttest. Attitude and subjective norm predicted behavioral intention in the regression model.

Conclusions: The results support that an educational intervention can positively impact nursing students' intent to implement gerontological competencies.

Abstract:
The education sector is at high risk for information security (InfoSec) breaches and in need of improved security practices. Achieving data protections cannot be through technical means alone. Addressing the human behavior factor is required. Security education, training, and awareness (SETA) programs are an effective method of addressing human InfoSec behavior. Applying sociobehavioral theories to InfoSec research provides information to aid IT security program managers in developing improved SETA programs. The purpose of this correlational study was to examine through the theoretical lens of the theory of planned behavior (TPB) how attitude toward the behavior (ATT), subjective norm (SN), and perceived behavioral control (PBC) affected the intention of computer end users in a K-12 environment to follow InfoSec policy. Data collection was from 165 K-12 school administrators in Northeast Georgia using an online survey instrument. Data analysis occurred applying multiple linear regression and logistic regression. The TPB model accounted for 30.8% of the variance in intention to comply with InfoSec policies. SN was a significant predictor of intention in the model. ATT and PBC did not show to be significant. These findings suggest improvement to K-12 SETA programs can occur by addressing normative beliefs of the individual. The application of improved SETA programs by IT security program managers that incorporate the findings and recommendations of this study may lead to greater information security in K-12 school systems. More secure school systems can contribute to social change through improved information protection as well as increased freedoms and privacy for employees, students, the organization, and the community.

Abstract:
There was a difference in the scores for the service quality constructs and the varying categories within the age, stay type, and timeshare ownership demographic variables. There was a difference only in the VED scores and the varying categories within the guest type and presentations attended demographic variables. There was also a difference in the scores for the word-of-mouth recommendation construct and the varying categories within the age, guest type, timeshare ownership and number of presentations attended demographic variables. Lastly, there was also a difference in the scores for the price sensitivity construct and the varying categories within the guest type, timeshare ownership and presentation attended demographic variables. The research discusses the business implications associated with these findings and proposes next steps for future research.; This study created a model using factor analysis and structural equation modeling to investigate the relationship of service quality, word-of-mouth recommendation and price sensitivity of individuals who experienced a timeshare mini vacation at a branded timeshare resort. The constructs of service quality were developed by creating a survey tool. A total of 4,797 surveys were electronically sent resulting in a total of 1,275 of the individuals surveyed who met the criteria of staying at a branded hotel or resort during their mini vacation. Six different variables were created from the ordinal level questions on the survey: Resort Accommodations, Sales Gallery, Sales Presentation, Resort Activities, Resort Staff and Brand Value. These were then used in an exploratory factor analysis to identify latent factors after which structural equation modeling was used to define the relationship between the factors and the independent variables. A total of 44 models were explored and evaluated based on goodness-of-fit metrics. The model that had the best level of fit was a first-order two-factor model. This model was created with an 80% subset and confirmed with a 20% subset of the sample. The factors found represent the Vacation Experience Promise (VEP) and the Vacation Experience Delivery (VED). There was a positive correlation for both VEP and VED with word-of-mouth recommendation and price sensitivity. The research also posited 24 hypotheses of the relationship between the service quality constructs, word-of-mouth recommendation and price sensitivity with the demographic characteristics of guest type, gender, stay type, age, marital status, gross income, timeshare ownership and the number of presentations attended. There was not enough information to support a relationship between the service quality constructs, word-of-mouth recommendation and price sensitivity with regards to gender, gross income and marital status.

Abstract:
Young adulthood is a crucial period for identity development, and an unclear sense of identity has been associated with deleterious psychological and social outcomes (Kroger & Marcia, 2011). Young adults have also identified self-sufficiency, including financial independence, as an essential aspect associated with attaining adulthood (Arnett, 2000). However, current realities such as global economic uncertainty and a shift toward greater personal responsibility for financial security may threaten the successful attainment of these essential goals (Furstenberg, Rumbaut, & Settersten, 2005). Hence, I explored identity formation (Erikson, 1950, 1968) in the domain of finance. Four socialization factors (perceived parental SES, parental financial communication, formal financial education, and high school work experience) and three beliefs (attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control) were used to predict financial identity (achievement, foreclosure, moratorium, and diffusion) in a sample of college students (N = 2,098) who were surveyed at two time points approximately 2.5 years apart. Four models were tested using structural equation modeling (SEM). First, using crossectional data, I tested the extent to which socialization factors and financial beliefs predicted financial identity. I found support for 79% of the hypothesized associations between the variables. Second, using crossectional data, I examined the degree to which financial beliefs mediated the association between socialization factors and financial identity. Findings indicated that financial beliefs partially mediated the association between parental financial communication and financial identity. Third, using longitudinal data, Time 1 (T1) socialization factors and T1 beliefs were used to predict Time 2 (T2) financial identity. As expected, T1 financial identity was the most robust predictor of T2 financial identity. After controlling for T1 financial identity, T1 variables were most predictive of changes in T2 foreclosure: Increases in foreclosure were predicted by perceived parental SES, parental communication, formal education, and subjective norms. Finally, T1 financial beliefs were allowed to mediate the association between T1 socialization factors and T2 financial identity. I found no evidence of mediation using longitudinal data. Findings from this study suggest that identity formation within the financial domain is consistent with identity formation in other recognized identity domains.

Hanson, Jessica Danielle. "Perceived behavioral control among non-pregnant women: a study of two behaviors related to fetal alcohol spectrum disorders." Diss., University of Iowa, 2012. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/2884.

Full text
Abstract:
Maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy is a public health concern due to the possible lifelong physical and cognitive effects in offspring. Prevention of alcohol-exposed pregnancies (AEP) should begin preconceptionally, either by preventing unintended pregnancies or by discouraging alcohol consumption in women who are at-risk for pregnancy. The purpose of this dissertation is to utilize the Theory of Planned Behavior's construct of perceived behavioral control (PBC)--including perceived power and control beliefs--to guide the measurement and understanding of two behaviors related to AEP among non-pregnant women: birth control use and binge drinking. For the first specific aim--to estimate the prevalence of alcohol-exposed pregnancies--a secondary data analysis was conducted using surveillance data from North Dakota and South Dakota women who have had a child with FAS. The FAS prevalence estimates (per 1,000 live births) in both states (ND=0.8/1,000; SD=0.9/1,000) were found to be higher than that calculated from national averages (0.7/1,000) using a comparable surveillance methodology. The goal of Specific Aim 2 was to determine risk for AEP among a random group of women, while Specific Aim 3 determined the control beliefs and perceived power to using birth control and decreasing binge drinking levels, and Specific Aim 4 focused on relating PBC of these two behaviors to behavioral intentions. Data for aims 2-4 were derived from a mailed, cross-sectional survey of 190 non-pregnant women randomly chosen from an electronic health records system in the upper Midwest. Of the 190 women included in the analyses, eight (6.6%) were binge drinking while being at-risk for pregnancy (i.e., being sexually active but not always using an effective form of birth control) (Specific Aim 2). This is lower than national estimates. For Specific Aim 3, there were high direct PBC scores for both birth control and binge drinking, and there was a positive correlation between birth control direct and indirect scores (although a negative correlation between binge drinking direct and indirect scores). Finally, Specific Aim 4 uncovered high intentions to both use birth control and to not binge drink. Also, the direct birth control PBC measure was significantly associated with birth control intention when controlling for other variables, although neither PBC nor intention appeared to be associated with actual birth control behavior. For binge drinking, the intention score and the direct measure of PBC were significantly associated with one another; as well, the direct measure of PBC and intention were both significantly associated with actual binge drinking behavior. Therefore, the relationship between PBC and intention was validated for both behaviors, and the association between PBC, intention, and actual behavior was indicated for binge drinking. Overall, the study both supported and disagreed with previous research, indicating that additional research with this theory and topic matter is necessary.

Abstract:
This chapter provides an overview of the emerging cognitive and emotional themes of behavioral finance that influence individual behavior. The behavioral finance perspective of risk incorporates both qualitative (subjective) and quantitative (objective) aspects of the decision-making process. An emerging subject of research interest and investigation in behavioral finance is the inverse (negative) relation between perceived risk and expected return (perceived return). The chapter highlights important topics such as representativeness, framing, anchoring, mental accounting, control issues, familiarity bias, trust, worry, and regret theory. It also examines the role of negative affective reactions on financial decisions. A host of biases that depend on specific aspects of the financial product or investment service influence the judgment and decision-making process of most financial players.

Abstract:
Physical activity is one of the most basic human functions, and it is an important foundation of health throughout life. Physical activity apports benefit on both physical and mental health, reducing the risk of several diseases and lowering stress reactions, anxiety and depression. More specifically, physical activity is defined as "any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that require energy expenditure" (World Health Organization), including in this definition several activities. Among them, walking has been shown to improve physical and mental well-being in every age group. Despite that, insufficient walking among university students has been increasingly reported, requiring walking promotion intervention. In order to do this, dividing students based on their intention to walk might be useful since the intention is considered as the best predictor of behaviour. In this work, we carried out a study on university students' intention to walk and some of its predictors by exploiting Item Response Theory (IRT) models. In particular, we inspected the predictors of intention by mean of Rating Scale Graded Response Model (RS-GRM). Then we used the Latent Class IRT model to divide students according to their intention to walk, including predictors' scores as covariates. We chose the intention's predictors according to an extension of the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), with both classic and additional variables. The formers are attitude toward behaviour, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control, whereas we used risk perception, self-efficacy, anticipation, self-identity and anticipated regret as additional variables. Data was collected administrating a self-report questionnaire to undergraduate students enrolled in the Psychology course at Federico II University of Naples.

"Assessment of Impaired Control Over Cannabis Consumption: Psychometric Properties of the Impaired Control Scale-Cannabis (ICS-C)." In 2021 Virtual Scientific Meeting of the Research Society on Marijuana. Research Society on Marijuana, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.26828/cannabis.2022.01.000.07.

Abstract:
Background: Impaired control over substance use is a construct that is central to addiction and appears to play an early role in the development of addictive behaviors. The Impaired Control Scale (ICS) was developed to measure impaired control over alcohol, which has been associated with problem drinking and alcohol-related problems in young adults. However, there is relatively less research regarding impaired control over cannabis, and currently there is a lack of a comprehensive and valid scale that specifically measures this construct. This study addresses this gap in the literature by introducing the Impaired Control Scale-Cannabis (ICS-C), an adaptation of the ICS designed to measure impaired control over cannabis. We conducted a preliminary examination of the factor structure, reliability, and validity of the ICS-C. Methods: An online survey was administered to introductory psychology students (N=362; 63% women; 66% White, mean age=19.91) at two Canadian Universities who reported using cannabis at least once in the past month (average frequency = 9.34 days; SD = 9.60). All participants completed the ICS and ICS-C along with measures of cannabis use and problems, including the Impaired Control subscale of the Marijuana Consequences Questionnaire (MACQ-IC). A subset of participants completed additional measures of impulsivity and self-regulation. Results: An exploratory factor analysis (EFA, with an oblique rotation) of the 25 items of the ICS-C yielded 3 factors, one of which was comprised solely of reverse keyed items (despite reverse coding items prior to the EFA). These items were trimmed from the measure and the EFA was rerun. Two factors emerged: Attempted Control (i.e., frequency of attempts to control cannabis use) and a factor comprised of items assessing both Failed Control (i.e., unsuccessful attempts in limiting cannabis use) and Perceived Control (i.e., beliefs about the ability to control cannabis use in the future). Given that the Failed and Perceived Control items unexpectedly loaded on the same factor, suggesting high redundancy in the concepts of Failed and Perceived control, the items assessing Perceived Control were dropped from subsequent analyses. The final solution consisted of two factors, Attempted Control (alpha=0.96) and Failed control (alpha=0.88). High correlations between the MACQ-IC and ICS-C Attempted Control (r=0.42, p<.001) and Failed Control (r=0.67, p<.001) scales provided evidence for convergent validity. Weaker correlations between ICS (alcohol version) and ICS-C Attempted Control (r=0.36, p<.001) and Failed Control (r=0.34, p<.001) scales supported discriminant validity. Concurrent validity was demonstrated based on the moderate and statistically significant correlations of the ICS-C Failed Control subscale and frequency of cannabis use (r=0.47, p<.001) and grams of cannabis used (r=0.44, p<.001). Additional evidence for concurrent and discriminant validity were also found in the patterns of correlations between the ICS-C subscales and measures of impulsivity and self-regulation. Conclusions: ICS-C is a promising tool that can be used to assess impaired control over cannabis in young adults. Future research should confirm the factor structure of the ICS-C and examine its utility to screen for impaired control in the context of prevention and early intervention for cannabis-related problems.

Abstract:
Melodic sonification is one of the most common methods of sonification: data modulates the pitch of an audio synthesizer over time. This simple sonification, however, still raises questions about how we listen to a melody and perceive the motions and patterns characterized by the underlying data. We argue that analytical listening to such melodies may focus on different ranges of the melody at different times and discover the pitch (and data) relationships gradually over time and after repeated listening. To examine such behaviors in real-time listening to a melodic sonification, we conducted a user study employing interactive time and pitch resolution controls for the user. The study also examines the relationships of these changing time and pitch resolutions to perceived musicality. The results indicate a stronger general relationship between the time progression and the use of time-resolution control to analyze data characteristics, while the pitch resolution controls tend to have more correlation with subjective perceptions of musicality.

Full text
Abstract:
The gas diffusion layer (GDL) plays a critical role in the overall performance of a polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC), especially in the mass transport control regime due to suboptimal liquid water transport. Liquid water blocks the porous pathways in the catalyst layer and gas diffusion layer thereby causing hindered oxygen transport from the channel to the active reaction sites. This phenomenon is known as “flooding” and is perceived as the primary mechanism leading to the limiting current behavior in the cell performance. The pore morphology and wetting characteristics of the cathode GDL are of paramount importance in the effective PEFC water management. Typical beginning-of-life GDLs exhibit hydrophobic characteristics, which facilities liquid water transport and hence reduces flooding. Experimental data, however, suggest that the GDL loses hydrophobicity over prolonged PEFC operation and becomes prone to enhanced flooding. In this work, we present a pore-scale modeling framework to study the structure-wettability-durability interplay in the context of flooding behavior in the PEFC GDL.

Abstract:
In this paper, a hybrid adaptive control algorithm that controls feedrate to regulate spindle current and detects tool wear is proposed. For this purpose, variation of steady state spindle current, time constant, and time delay were examined through experiments based on step end milling under various cutting conditions. The developed hybrid adaptive control algorithm is composed of adjustable proportional feedback control (adjustable P control), fine control, entry feedrate control, and tool wear detection algorithm. Adjustable P control carries out large scale control, fine control carries out detailed control, entry feedrate control reduces the peak current produced when a tool makes contact with a workpiece, and tool wear detection algorithm perceives tool wear and breakage qualitatively. The adjustable P control algorithm was verified through comparisons between calculated P gains and experimentally obtained P gains. The hybrid adaptive control algorithm was applied to various cutting conditions and it showed global stability as well as excellent applicability behavior.

Full text
Abstract:
Plant yield largely depends on a complex interplay and feedback mechanisms of distinct hormonal pathways. Over the past decade great progress has been made in elucidating the global molecular mechanisms by which each hormone is produced and perceived. However, our knowledge of how interactions between hormonal pathways are spatially and temporally regulated remains rudimentary. For example, we have demonstrated that although the BR receptor BRI1 is widely expressed, the perception of BRs in epidermal cells is sufficient to control whole-organ growth. Supported by additional recent works, it is apparent that hormones are acting in selected cells of the plant body to regulate organ growth, and furthermore, that local cell-cell communication is an important mechanism. In this proposal our goals were to identify the global profile of translated genes in response to BR stimulation and depletion in specific tissues in Arabidopsis; determine the spatio-temporal dependency of BR response on auxin transport and signaling and construct an interactive public website that will provide an integrated analysis of the data set. Our technology incorporated cell-specific polysome isolation and sequencing using the Solexa technology. In the first aim, we generated and confirmed the specificity of novel transgenic lines expressing tagged ribosomal protein in various cell types in the Arabidopsis primary root. We next crossed these lines to lines with targeted expression of BRI1 in the bri1 background. All lines were treated with BRs for two time points. The RNA-seq of their corresponding immunopurified polysomal RNA is nearly completed and the bioinformatic analysis of the data set will be completed this year. Followed, we will construct an interactive public website (our third aim). In the second aim we started revealing how spatio-temporalBR activity impinges on auxin transport in the Arabidopsis primary root. We discovered the unexpected role of BRs in controlling the expression of specific auxin efflux carriers, post-transcriptionally (Hacham et al, 2012). We also showed that this regulation depends on the specific expression of BRI1 in the epidermis. This complex and long term effect of BRs on auxin transport led us to focus on high resolution analysis of the BR signaling per se. Taking together, our ongoing collaboration and synergistic expertise (hormone action and plant development (IL) and whole-genome scale data analysis (US)) enabled the establishment of a powerful system that will tell us how distinct cell types respond to local and systemic BR signal. BR research is of special agriculture importance since BR application and BR genetic modification have been shown to significantly increase crop yield and to play an important role in plant thermotolerance. Hence, our integrated dataset is valuable for improving crop traits without unwanted impairment of unrelated pathways, for example, establishing semi-dwarf stature to allow increased yield in high planting density, inducing erect leaves for better light capture and consequent biomass increase and plant resistance to abiotic stresses.
