Cordes, Trudy Lyn Education Faculty of Arts &amp Social Sciences UNSW. "A conceptual approach to the work, leisure and retirement education of adults with an intellectual disability." Awarded by:University of New South Wales. School of Education, 2005. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/32265.

Full text
Abstract:
Work, leisure and retirement are fundamental aspects of life for individuals with an intellectual disability, just as with the general population. Many educational efforts have taught knowledge and skills to persons with an intellectual disability to improve their functioning in the work and leisure domains. More recently, retirement concerns have become particularly salient because so many individuals now live much longer. The present study looked at using a conceptual approach to improve education in these three domains. It employed the principles that instruction works much better when it proceeds from an individual=s existing concepts and that instruction should teach useful concepts that an individual can apply to improve his or her real world functioning. This conceptual approach has not been used much with the education of persons with an intellectual disability. In Study 1, sixty adults with an intellectual disability were interviewed to determine their existing concepts of work, leisure and retirement and their work and leisure histories. Most had solid concepts of work and leisure, but with some gaps, particularly in notions of volunteer work and occupational status. Most reported satisfactory work and leisure lives. Most had a relatively poor concept of retirement at best and had done little or no retirement planning. These data suggested some key targets for an educational program to improve their knowledge and functioning in these domains. In Study 2, these data were used to develop an instructional program that focussed on gaps in knowledge of volunteer work, banking, budgeting and participation in satisfying leisure activities and in retirement planning. This instructional program was delivered over eight weeks to a class consisting of nine adults with an intellectual disability, with some success. This general conceptual approach can be usefully applied to teaching in other important domains with persons with an intellectual disability. They can be taught key concepts which they can use to live their lives more purposely and independently.

Trustam, Emma. "Exploring recovery in people with learning disabilities." Thesis, Canterbury Christ Church University, 2014. http://create.canterbury.ac.uk/12767/.

Full text
Abstract:
A literature review examines how mental health difficulties may differ for people with learning disabilities (PwLD) and the general population; with respect to their vulnerability to mental ill-health and the definition, presentation and treatment of mental health problems. Factors which have been found to positively impact on the mental health of PwLD are then explored. The review considers methodological limitations and gaps in our understanding, highlighting a need for further research focusing on mental health recovery for individuals with learning disabilities. Section B presents a study exploring what recovery means for people with learning disabilities and mental health difficulties. Interviews were conducted with nine individuals and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis used. A model was developed which described participants’ entry to the therapeutic service and their progression towards recovery. The model firstly describes how participants felt entering the service, their Mental Health/Therapy Experience, and explains how these experiences were validated and the recovery process enabled through the therapeutic alliance. Once enabled, the second dimension of the model is detailed, that of the Client Recovery Experience which extends across three phases of recovery. The first phase, Feeling Better describes elements perceived as integral to improved mental health. The second phase, Recovery Ongoing identifies that more input is required. Thirdly, Attainability?: Reality, Ideals and Fantasy, reveals PwLD’s perceptions of recovery and the techniques used in striving to achieve this. Salient features of recovery specific to PwLD are recognised as important to clinical practice, and results suggest there is a need to openly discuss LD identity, and address idealisations surrounding a non-LD one. This would involve setting realistic goals and managing expectations accordingly and focussing on social integration as a way of enabling ongoing recovery.

Tasks of research: 1) analyse results of academic findings on good practice and challenges in employment of people with mental disabilities wold-wide; 2) analyse the developments and trends on employment of people with mental disabilities in Latvia; 3) propose possible development scenarios on employment of people with mental disabilities in Latvia. Research methods used in research: scientific publications analysis; analysis of legislative documents on employment of people with mental disabilities, analysis of statistical data on employment of people with mental disabilities. Abstract:
Disabilities are more related to a social context than to medical conditions. However, the lack of attention to the subject and social support negatively impacts the lives of people with disabilities and their relatives as well. In an exploratory study, it was perceived a trend towards the depreciation regarding this theme, instead of the construction of a support network. In light of these facts, this paper analyzed postings related to mental, physical and intellectual disabilities to identify the main topics discussed and the circumstances of use.

The Americans with Disabilities Act was passed to help some of the 43 million people in the United States with a physical or mental disability obtain employment. It prohibits discriminatory hiring and personnel practices against a “qualified” disabled individual, and requires employers to make certain accommodations, provided they are reasonable under the circumstances, to a “qualified” person’s disability. This mandate is designed to give a “qualified”, but disabled, individual the same opportunity for employment or advancement that the able-bodied have. Paper published with permission.

Abstract:
The paper concentrate on problems connected with problems of peoples with disability. The main aims of the paper is to measure the level of quality of service in the case of architectural barriers in municipal offices by peoples in disability. We made following hypothesis: the types of disability significantly affects the perception of quality of services in municipal office regarding architectural barrier. The problem of satisfaction of people with disability in the case of architectural barriers in municipal office in Sosnowiec was analyzed from type of disability point of view. We distinguished five main types of disability in the paper: sensory impairment – a lack, damage or disorder of sensory analysers’ function (this category includes the blind, the visually impaired, the deaf, hard of hearing persons and people with visual and auditory perception disorders); intellectual impairment – mental retardation; social functioning impairment – disorders of neural and emotional balance; communication impairment – hindered verbal contact (speech impediments, autism, stammering); motor impairment – people with motor organ dysfunction. On the basis of that are discussed in this publication the research, we can conclude that the overall assessment of architectural barriers for people with disabilities is as in the case of the Municipal Office in Sosnowiec at an average level. The problems focus mainly on matters of specialized service selected groups of customers with disabilities who require further elaboration. Another type of problem is to issue a limited number of parking spaces for the disabled, but for objective reasons, it will be difficult to solve. Also we can say that the assessment of the architectural barriers by peoples with various types of disability vary significantly. The architectural barriers are the problem especially for people with motor disabilities – those persons are going to municipal office often and because of type of their disability barriers within the office and near the office is the big problem for them. The results are supporting the hypothesis that the type of disability affects perception of architectural barriers by peoples with disabilities.

Abstract:
Background: Persons with disability are every person who experiences physical, intellectual, mental, and/ or sensory limitations for a long period of time. These people may experience obstacles and difficulties to participate fully and effectively with other citizens based on equal rights. This study aimed to review the disability perception in sexuality and reproductive health needs. Subjects and Method: This was a scoping review study using the Arksey and O’Malley framework. The framework used to manage research questions was Population, Exposure, Outcome dan Study Design (PEOS). A total of 3 databases, namely Science Direct, PubMed, and Whiley were selected for this study. The data were collected by identifying relevant articles according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Result: People with disability were human beings who can feel biological needs. Negative stigma from family, health workers, and parents were a very perceived barrier for people with disabilities. These people need to receive special attention regarding information and application of health sexual and reproductive health. Access to information can be applied in communities that gather a large number of people with disability so that it is easy for them to get information on their reproductive needs and rights. Conclusion: People with disability need special attention regarding information and application of sexuality and safe reproductive health.
