Abstract:
Pentecostalism has grown rapidly in Brazil over the last century. It has changed the country’s religious landscape and has been most successful in poor, urban areas, the same areas in Rio de Janeiro where the Comando Vermelho flourishes. In the city’s favelas, Pentecostalism is now the most widely practiced religion; it is the faith of the killable people. Though Pentecostal Christianity started in the early 1900s in Los Angeles and was brought to Brazil by missionaries, it spread largely by empowering local pastors and independent churches and has few ties to foreign churches or funding sources.

Abstract:
This chapter elucidates the epistemological assumptions tacit in the uniqueness of Pentecostal and charismatic experience. It argues that Pentecostal spirituality functions as a limit case for most paradigms in epistemology, requiring a revised account of ‘understanding’ that recognizes the unique and irreducible mode of ‘narrative knowledge’. It is suggested that this mode of religious experience is an occasion to recall biblical intuitions about knowledge often ignored by paradigms in contemporary religious epistemology. It is suggested that the method here, which begins from lived experience, making explicit what is tacit and implicit in practice, is akin to the phenomenological tradition of Heidegger and the the pragmatism of Wittgenstein and Robert Brandom.

Abstract:
Pentecostal biblical interpretation rests on a hermeneutics of fulfillment, summarized in the words “this is that” (Acts 2:16). It presumes that an outpouring of the Holy Spirit is already in process and more is yet to come. Pentecostals construe the Bible not as detached, cognitive content, but as an active, efficacious power that they seek to enact experientially. Pentecostals try to bring their affective experience into alignment with scripture (orthopathy), and to live, feel, and act “as” biblical figures. Pentecostal preaching—especially in the black church—collapses the “two horizons” to effect a re-living of biblical stories. Neo-Pentecostalism brings a “Davidic” focus (worship, music, praise, spiritual warfare) alongside the “Lucan” focus of classical Pentecostalism (Spirit baptism, tongues-speaking, missions). By adopting New Testament supernaturalism with utter seriousness and treating first-century experiences as normative, Pentecostalism mediated between early twentieth-century fundamentalist biblical literalism and modernist contemporaneous experientialism, synthesizing these competing emphases.

Abstract:
Daily, collective practice is at the heart of Prison Pentecostalism. Because of the skepticism swirling around religious conversion and practice inside of prison and the importance of proving faith commitments as genuine, the way a Pentecostal lives inside of prison is very important. Pentecostal inmates participate in rituals inside of the cellblocks that are visible to their fellow inmates, which serve to signal their membership in the group and help to prove the authenticity of their conversions and Pentecostal identity. The rituals and daily practice of Prison Pentecostalism provided inmates with a way to be different people even though they were still incarcerated.

Abstract:
This book offers a chronological and historical overview the many forms of Pentecostalism within the United States. Pentecostalism is a poorly understood theological movement, despite its recent growth in popularity as well as social and political importance. More and more Americans are encountering neighbors, friends, coworkers, and even political leaders who are aligned with one of the many varieties of American Pentecostalism. In spite of this proliferation, no complete survey of 2lst-century American Pentecostalism exists. In Pentecostalism in America, author R. G. Robins offers an accessible survey of Pentecostalism in the United States, providing a clear, nontechnical introduction and making this complex and rapidly changing movement comprehensible to the general reader. A historical approach to the topic is presented, guiding the reader through the theological, social, and liturgical variants within American Pentecostalism and its major branches, organizations, and institutions; the movement's relation to its offspring; as well as how Pentecostal groups compare to parallel movements in contemporary American Christianity.
