Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe City of Pittsburgh, PA is located west of the Appalachian Mountains in the Appalachian Plateaus Province. The relatively flat surface of the plateau is dissected by drainage from the three principal rivers of the region, the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio. The formation of Pittsburgh’s three rivers and drainages has a long history dating back to before the Pleistocene Epoch, linked closely to the advance and retreat of continental glaciation.Western Pennsylvania is associated with the westernmost formation of the Appalachian Mountain chain with deformation in the form of a series of nearly flat-lying, gently warped Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. Rocks cropping out in the region range in age from Devonian to Permian. Pennsylvanian strata are dominated by thin cyclic sequences of sandstone, shale, claystone, coal, and limestone. Most of the geologic hazards present in the region include slope instability, expansive shales and slags, mine subsidence, acid mine drainage, pyritic acid rock and flooding. The region also has an abundance of natural resources including coal, natural gas, oil, salt, limestone, sand and gravel and water.Pittsburgh's strategic location helped shape westward expansion during the formation of the Nation, largely because of the rivers, which served as an inexpensive, yet efficient means of transportation. Infrastructure was always significant in Pittsburgh. However, the existing aging infrastructure are deteriorating. Today, Pittsburgh has transcended the legacy name, “Steel City” and has revitalized itself with nationally-recognized universities and medical centers and a resurgence in natural gas exploration. However, many environmental legacy issues still burden the area.

Abstract:
The Allegheny Portage Railroad was the first railroad over the Allegheny Mountains. For thirty years it connected canals in central and western Pennsylvania, hauling canal boats operating between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh over the mountains, allowing uninterrupted travel from eastern population centers to the continental interior. Edward Miller, a young Philadelphia engineer, became Principal Assistant Engineer at twenty-one. He was later Chief Engineer and/or President of numerous canals and railroads, and even served as Principal Assistant Engineer of the great Pennsylvania Railroad. Miller performed the first geological exploration of the Allegheny Mountains and, in his 1835 report, included a cross section and a box of specimens illustrating his stratigraphic units. Some of the more famous scientists of the day reported on specimens of rocks, economic minerals, and fossils found at various places along the railroad. Timothy Abbott Conrad's report of marine fossils is historically important because it was the first published report of Pennsylvanian invertebrate fossils from North America.

Perfetti, Michael A. "Pedestrian system design : linking sites in downtown Pittsburgh." Virtual Press, 1996. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1020170.

Full text
Abstract:
It has been acknowledged that the pedestrian environment in downtown Pittsburgh is inadequate, lacking connectivity and significant amounts of quality open space, and as a transportation system it is in direct conflict with vehicular traffic. This creative project examines the condition of the pedestrian environment relative to the other systems, places, and activities that are affected by pedestrian welfare. The intense activity within the CBD generates volumes of pedestrian and vehicular traffic that it can hardly support. The pedestrian environment lacks sufficient space, and, as a result, the pedestrian's mobility is constricted and there is excessive conflict with vehicles. Moreover, pedestrians in downtown Pittsburgh have very few opportunities to access the waterfront and spaces and buildings of particular significance within and adjacent to the CBD.The design solutions that are proposed herein include a variety of development guidelines, street adaptations and open space recommendations. Through the installation of these solutions the pedestrian environment becomes enhanced and downtown Pittsburgh is able to become a more cohesive place where history, architecture and nature are integrated into an urban environment that is truly livable.

Rohsner, Paul Emil. "Living downtown: a multiuse complex for the Pittsburgh central business district." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/53159.

Full text
Abstract:
The central business district (C.B.D.) of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, "the Golden Triangle", has been for nearly sixty years with very little provision for housing. The area is topographically compact, approximately one half square mile, bounded by rivers on two of the sides and a bluff on the third side. It is the hub of the public transportation system, the convergence of the area watershed and the perceived focal point oft the region. In recent years the cultural center has also spread to the C.B.D., and there have been major rehabilitation, building and capital improvement projects. These conditions make for an environment enticing for both living and conducting business. Living Downtown: a Multiuse Complex for the Pittsburgh C.B.D. is a project that combines housing, offices, shops, parking, services and public and private open spaces. This is accomplished by considering factors such as zoning guidelines, demands for density, site conditions, egress, daylighting and sightlines. The design is inspired by Pittsburgh's vernacular hillside dwellings and the dynamics of the natural and built fabric of the site. Where a lone man may be overcome, two together can resist. A three-ply cord is not easily broken. - Eccelsiates 4:12

A building and its environment can work together to express unity and harmony. The concept behind my project stems from the specific nature of a public place and its needs. These elements, synthesized through a process of transformation and redefinition, bring the building as close as possible to its architectural reality. My thesis is that the awareness of order is achieved when an object has established a language that clarifies its existence.

Burton, Dorian Orlando. "Creating a Campaign for Black Male Achievement: Building a Collective Impact Strategy to Support Black Male Achievement in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania." Thesis, Harvard University, 2015. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:16645009.

Full text
Abstract:
This capstone shows how I framed and enacted a collective impact strategy to build a campaign for African-American male achievement in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The project was anchored in TandemED, an initiative developed by me and my fellow Ed.L.D. cohort member, Brian Barnes. A core element of TandemED is creating targeted partnerships that are constructed by establishing integrated missions and collaborations within communities between individuals, families, organizations, and institutions and using these partnerships to implement a collective impact strategy. Therefore, my approach in Pittsburgh drew heavily on the science and art of creating and sustaining positive relational ties or social capital, while also having an appreciation for how these ties and capital are shaped by racial inequalities. As the extant literature suggests, a focus on race and its effects, more so than any other dimension of inequality, is pivotal to efforts designed to positively shape the challenging contours of life Black males in the U.S. almost unilaterally experience regardless of class. This approach makes sense because institutions and organizations that serve Black males (e.g., schools, nonprofits, local, state, and federal programs) often lack the capacity to redirect and innovate and frequently reflect siloed efforts that do not integrate economic, social, and educational programs and policies in ways that can lead to transformative change and the development of Black males. More importantly, the success of African-American males is inextricably linked to the success (e.g., social, economic and cultural) of the nation as a whole (American Psychological Association Task Force on Resilience and Strength in Black Children and Adolescents, 2008). In considering these issues, I developed and implemented a theory of action which involved building relational ties among institutions, organizations, families, and individuals in communities that extended to the creation of a collective impact strategy and actionable recommendations for advancing a new narrative for success for African-American males and the communities they live in.

Abstract:
This conclusion to Part One describes how the rise of temperance politics among black Philadelphians led to massive white violence and even more withdrawal by that city’s black leaders. Pittsburgh’s African Americans, led by Martin Delany continued to act politically even after disfranchisement, attempting to organize state conventions, only to be thwarted by Philadelphians. Ultimately, in the 1850s, black Pennsylvanians acted outside of electoral politics to reclaim some agency in fighting off slavecatchers in places in Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, and many smaller sites.

Abstract:
The fight for much needed social services for Pittsburgh's poor and working-class black families had deep roots in the prewar years. But this struggle intensified during and after World War I with the formation and development of the Urban League of Pittsburgh (ULP). Following the lead of national headquarters in New York City, the Steel City's small “ban of reformers” placed the provision of migration, work, housing, and health services at the core of its mission to Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania. After a brief moment of extraordinary success, the agency's programs dissipated during the economic downturn after the war but rebounded before the onset of the Great Depression.
