The themes of my research are to quantify and compare the combustion characteristics and the associated polluting emissions of natural wood pellets and roasted black pellets.By controlling all the combustion parameters (primary and secondary incoming air, pellet flow, boiler power), the main objectives are to:- Quantify and compare the combustion characteristics of natural wood pellets and roasted pellets on a well-controlled combustion test bench.- To measure pollutant emissions using physicochemical analyzers and by in-situ laser diagnostics in the combustion chamber and in the chimney.- Assess the technical-economic advantages of the two types of pellets across the entire value chain and offer professional advice to heating engineers and combinators on the most economical and environmentally friendly use of biomass pellets

The improvement of the durability of the surface aspect of a wood covered with a clearcoating is a veritable economic issue as far as outdoors use of timber is concerned. The variability of the photochemical behaviour of the various wood objects is assigned to the nature and the content of the extracts. First, we analyzed the natural color of a broad range of wood species of varied origins and its durability during a photochemical ageing. Correlations between the variations of the chromatic coordinates and the origin, the content and the antioxidant properties of the extracts were investigated. Second, we have attempted to improve the stability of a conferred wood color by environmentaly friendly treatments: impregnation by durable wood extracts and heat treatment. EPR was used to follow the kinetics of the radical species formations involved in the wood photodegradation. The last part was devoted to the study of the stabilization of the wood aspect by chemical modification of the phenolic chromophores of the wood components

To answer actual and future energetic and environmental issues, wood development is very important, notably with industrial and collective applications. To answer these needs and follow this development, lots of supplying structures of wood chips are being created. The main difficulty for these companies is guaranty good and stable raw material quality all time, notably concerning moisture content. The objective of this work is to research the most appropriate solutions to answer this problematic. So, the work begins by a bibliographical study that will help to understand the existing systems of drying; drying can be natural (under layer, under shelter …) or artificial (tunnel dryer, rotary dryer …). Then, experiments were put in place to understand and quantify more precisely natural drying parameters impact on wood chips and physico-chemical modifications on wood chips during storage. After, mathematic models are developed to traduce wood chip drying comportment, after models results are compared to experimental results. Finally, economical scenarios were performed to study the different solutions or combinations of solutions to dry wood chips in order to answer technical and economical industrial needs

The industrial transformation generates pollution and nuisances. Like all industries, wood industry generates during its various stages of the manufacturing and of the treatment of wood material, different kinds of polluting agents which spread through the nature in differents states : as a solid (different discards), as liquid (chemical products having the polluting agents) as a gaz (any gaz more or less dangerous. The wood industry is also face the increasing of the contestations from people living not for from its installations and chiefly from public opinion. Norvadays, many rules are required to its various installations; others will be applied on the products deriving from the wood industry, which must respect some ecological criteria exacted by various regulations which tend to control industrial activity and the necessity to protect the environment. To understand very well the risks of pollution generated by the wood industry in the environment, and also to know the attitude of the industrialists facing these problems, an requiry in the industrial middle allows us to knom the state of the industrial plants and the reason of the main problems of environment or the problem capable to be faced in different sectors of the wood industry. The importance of the nuisances depends very often on the size of the enterprises and on theirs production process. What is worth saying is that in Lorraine, the pollution caused by wood industry is weak. This is due by the dispersion of the industrial installations, the slight use of chemical products, the adaptation and the progressive modernization of the industrial tissue. Yes, somme problems still exist. They concern chiefly noise, the using of discards produced by chemical products and the best control of the installation of wood combustion

In this thesis, we present the results of our research about the generation of internal structure of trees based on the simulation of the tree growth. For the modelling of these structures, we use a model which allows the presentation of subdivisions of 3D objects : the 3Gmaps. Thanks to a structuring of objects at different levels (ring, volume), our approach allow simplifying the control of the evolution. Moreover, we add a formalization of the growth management with an extension of L-systems in dimension 3 : 3Gmap L-systems. Provided with this modelling and with this formalism, we are able of generating internal wood structures and credible from a botanical point of view. To validate our model, we offer some lanes of farms : generation of wooden textures with management of knots, wood defects, weathering,. .

This paper explores the potential for natural light to enhance wooden interior environments. Several studies have proven that the use of wood in furniture, interior surfaces and decoration help creating warm, bright and pleasant ambiences, enhancing psychological well-being and comfort when compared to other materials. This study aims to compare and examine the photometric and psychologic effects of diverse wooden environments. The objectives of this project were twofold: first, to study the diversity of northern sky conditions in terms of cloud cover and thickness as well as to evaluate the impacts of the diversity of natural light on five different wooden scale models. In order to create a cloudiness scale, weather data was collected during spring equinox in Quebec City, as well as photometric measurements. A photographic survey occurred in five scale models made with interior wooden finishes of varying color combinations, which documented the impact of sky diversity on brightness, hue and contrast. Simultaneous scale model studies under a real sky allowed direct comparison under the exact same lighting conditions. The second objective was to explore the effects of different colors, finish and ratio of wooden surfaces combinations on human perception. More specifically, participants compare simultaneously the five different interior wooden scale models under the natural light of the northern hemisphere in terms of their appreciation, visual comfort and well-being. The survey involved 80 participants with an exploratory questionnaire in order to compare and classify the different models. Conclusions showed a remarkable diversity of visual ambiences for a South-East oriented space depending on the position of the sun and sky conditions. Gray-dyed wooden finishes created dull and unchanging atmospheres, while yellow oaked surfaces allowed various dynamic ambiences. Participants demonstrated a preference for clear, bright and warm models, relating them cognitive and small-scale tasks. Darker models in terms of reflectance and lighting ambiences were the least preferred, especially for women.
