RésuméMarquée par le paradigme de la singularité, l’histoire de l’art européen a longtemps été le fruit d’une alliance entre le modèle vasarien, associé à l’écriture biographique, et le connoisseurship, comme méthode d’attribution. Mais ce modèle est en tension avec la complexité des formes de la production artistique à l’âge renaissant et classique. Des travaux récents, issus de l’histoire sociale, de la philosophie de l’art et d’un « nouveau connoisseurship » proche du monde des musées, explorent ainsi la tension entre autographie et réalisation à plusieurs mains, entre attribution et collaboration artistique, exemplaire dans l’œuvre de Rembrandt. La conception autographique de la peinture n’est pas universelle: elle a une histoire qui se cristallise au XVIIesiècle dans la littérature du connoisseurship et les discours nouveaux sur la touche. Ces travaux révèlent aussi l’importance des répétitions et des multiples dans l’histoire de l’art moderne, jusqu’alors marginalisés dans une écriture historique de la singularité. Attentifs à l’histoire matérielle des œuvres, comme à l’histoire sociale et intellectuelle de l’art, ils mettent au jour le rôle du collectif et des « originaux multiples » dans la fabrication de la singularité artistique, au cœur même de la toile. Ils remettent ainsi en cause certaines conceptions fondamentales de la peinture en Occident, tels le culte de l’original et le statut de l’autographie, et ouvrent la voie à une histoire culturelle de l’art renouvelée.

En 1570 paraît, dans les presses de Thiebolt Berger à Strasbourg, le manuel d’escrime de Joachim Meyer, intitulé Gründtliche Beschreibung der freyen Ritterlichen unnd Adelichen Kunst des Fechtens. L’ouvrage est très richement illustré de gravures en pleine page, dont l’invention est attribuée à Tobias Stimmer et qui ont été gravées par son atelier. À l’appui d’une analyse systématique des gravures, notre étude vise non seulement à confirmer cette attribution, mais aussi à montrer que le traité ainsi que sa dédicace ont pour objectif la captatio benevolentiae du dédicataire – le comte palatin Johann Casimir von Pfalz-Simmern –, en traitant largement de la thématique classique du chevalier héroïque. À la croisée entre vertus guerrières traditionnelles, exemplum moralis humaniste et géométrisation des arts mécaniques, nous verrons également que ce traité est emblématique du phénomène de libéralisation des sciences et techniques dans le contexte des cours européennes de la Renaissance.

La peinture italienne des XIIIe et XIVe siècles possède dans l'histoire de l'art, depuis les Vies de Vasari, un statut exceptionnel : celui d'origine de la « peinture occidentale ». En faisant de Cimabue et de Giotto les primi lumi d'une « manière moderne » encore en enfance, Vasari mettait en effet en place un discours qui n'a cessé de nourrir les histoires de l'art successives. La fin du Duecento et le Trecento y représentent, après le sombre Moyen Age, le début d'une « renaissance » des arts inspirée de l'Antiquité. Mais ce commencement ne se connaît pas pour tel, et sa vérité est le fruit d'un accomplissement ultérieur : l'invention au Quattrocento de la perspective, et les développements qu'en proposent Michel-Ange, Léonard de Vinci et Raphaël. D'où la double caractérisation dont la peinture des XIIIe et XIVe siècles a fait, alternativement ou parfois simultanément, l'objet : oeuvre de « primitifs », qu'identifie leur incapacité à mettre en pratique sans erreur les critères spatiaux définis à partir du xve siècle, ou au contraire, pour citer le titre de l'ouvrage fameux d'Erwin Panofsky, oeuvre d'« avant-courriers » de la Renaissance, auteurs valeureux d'« une première rupture par rapport aux principes médiévaux de représentation du monde visible au moyen du trait et de la couleur ».

This article explores the artistic relationship between Western European Renaissance art and Mughal painting ca. 1630s at the ateliers in North India. A central theme is the employment of European painterly modes in the Mughal visual tradition that expressed male-male intimacy, carnal desire, and emotional attachment. In particular, the article focuses on the work of the Mughal painter Govardhan, who illustrated the opening scene of Sa‘dī’s Gulistan (Rose Garden). Govardhan built upon sixteenth-century European compositional elements and the themes of Noli me tangere and the Doubting Thomas to form subtle yet unmistakable allusions to male-male sexuality.
Cet article explore les relations artistiques entre l’art de la Renaissance européenne et la peinture moghole des années 1630 dans les ateliers du nord de l’Inde. On y traite de l’utilisation de motifs de la peinture européenne dans la tradition visuelle moghole exprimant l’intimité masculine, le désir charnel et l’attachement affectif. Cet article se penche en particulier sur l’œuvre du peintre mogol Govardhan qui a illustré la scène d’ouverture du Gulistan (Rose Garden) de Sa‘dī. Govardhan y a construit son illustration à l’aide l’élément de composition de l’Europe du XVIe siècle, ainsi que sur les thèmes Noli me tangere et du Thomas incrédule, afin de créer une évocation subtile mais univoque de la sexualité homosexuelle masculine.

Avec l’invention de la peinture à l’huile au XVe siècle, la couleur prend une autre dimension : elle se construit dans l’épaisseur de la matière picturale. En effet, le nombre de couches déposées module la clarté et la saturation de la couleur, tandis qu’un fond blanc diffusant donne l’impression d’une lumière provenant de l’arrière du tableau tel un rétro-éclairage. Étudier la matière picturale comme un composant optique permet de simuler l’apparence d’un tableau, aide qui peut être précieuse lors d’une opération de restauration sur les couches picturales. Cette approche est aussi à la source de procédés innovants d’impression 3D couleur s’inspirant de la technique des peintres de la Renaissance.

Drawing on the concept of "autoethnography" as defined by Mary Louise Pratt, this paper argues that representations of cross-cultural encounter in Renaissance travel narratives often bear striking resemblances to moments of encounter and reunion in Spenserean and Shakespearean romance. Focusing on the trope of linguistic apotheosis which I call the "divine attribution," the paper discusses various New World ethnographies with respect to specific encountering moments in The Faerie Queene and The Tempest; analysis of these texts suggests that their authors shared habits of ideation conditioned both by literary tradition and by contemporary ethnographic awareness.

The 19th-century Italian art critic Giovanni Morelli contributed significantly to the theory and practice of attribution of paintings by prominent Renaissance masters. His methods, based on the profound knowledge of human anatomy and the analysis of artists’ professional skills, influenced not only the history of visual arts but also the development of forensic science, forensic medicine, the theory of psychoanalysis, and the practice of psychotherapy. The article provides the analysis of Giovanni Morelli’s scientific heritage for the identification and attribution of the works of fine art and for solving forensic tasks requiring the investigation of human skills and habits.Morelli’s methods and the capabilities of a comprehensive forensic study of artistic and cultural values with the involvement of the appropriate instrumental base and specialized knowledge in the field of art history, forensic traceology, and materials science, as well as digital technologies, can significantly increase the reliability of the results of attribution activities of museums, art scientists, experts of world auction houses and amateur collectors.

In the Renaissance, in connection with the increased public interest in ancient culture, the activities of Italian scientists-antiquarians intensified. Interest in antiquity was shared by philologists, artists and architects. This was clearly manifested in the study of the history of languages, the history of literature, the history of art and architecture. Associations of scientists – humanists were created around archaeological work. The difficulties in the formation of artistic terminology in the Renaissance were associated with the transition from church Latin to ancient, interest in the possibilities of using the Italian language and ancient Latin. Archaeological research and archaeological measurements were accompanied by philological research and attribution descriptions. The article deals with the works of F. Petrarch, L.B. Alberti, F. Biondo and other Italian humanists of the 14th – early 16th century, which contain ideas about the relationship between ancient Roman culture and the culture of the Renaissance.

Dans cet article nous envisageons de relire le mythe Déméter-Koré à l’aube du « Grand Siècle » en France et d’appréhender ses différentes réécritures à travers la renaissance du lien puissant entre monde végétal, souterrain et corps féminin. Nous étudions Déméter, figure de la femme-mère nourricière, divinité des récoltes et sa fille, Koré, personnification du cycle semis/moisson, symbole de la métamorphose du végétal, dans la peinture classique. Nous observons que la misogynie et la moralisation de la société réabsorbent le mythe ancien, en ne gardant que certains aspects de sa célébration : l’allégorie de la récolte ou bien à l’opposé, la femme aux Enfers et la mort. Nous nous interrogerons donc sur ce recul et les implications d’une résurgence de cultes païens dans la société chrétienne.

The aim of the study is to determine the artistic features of two Renaissance chests from the collection of the Pskov Museum-Reserve, as well as the time and place of their production. The paper considers two works from the collection of the Pskov State Historical, Architectural and Art Museum-Reserve, i.e. a cassone decorated in the techniques of carving and intarsia and a small chest decorated with flat carvings. The items are considered against a broad historical background, numerous analogies are drawn. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that the author was able to establish that the cassone chest and the small chest decorated with flat carvings had been made in the XV-XVI centuries in Northern Italy. As a result of the study, the two artistic works were added to the number of attributed Italian Renaissance chests, which are currently located in Russian museums.

Celui-ci, revendiqué, alors, non plus simplement comme une technique, mais comme une activité intellectuelle puis, avec la découverte des lois de la perspective, fondée sur le nombre, comme une science, permit la promotion de la peinture, de la sculpture, et de l’architecture, bientôt rejointes par la musique, au rang des «arts libéraux», à l’égal de la poésie, cependant que leur était trouvé, à la fin du XVIIe siècle, un nouveau dénominateur commun : le beau. L’auteur montre, ensuite, que, dans l’art contemporain, le «beau » n’est plus ce dénominateur commun des «beaux arts». Doit-on, dès lors, abandonner ce système, comme l’ont proposé divers auteurs ? Ce n’est pas le sentiment de l’auteur, qui relève que l’«émotion» a, de tout temps, été le fondement de l’art et voit le dénominateur commun de toutes les branches qui le composent dans l’émotion (esthétique), recherchée par le «spectateur», provoquée par le créateur, mais également suscitée par sa propre émotion dont il se décharge par son activité créatrice et qui confère à l’art sa fonction thérapique.

Cet article constitue une vaste enquête sur les fondements historiographiques d'un mouvement pictural du Quattrocento florentin, la pittura di luce, qui n'a été baptisé ainsi qu'en 1990. Son intérêt premier est de démontrer que ce cornant fut perçu par la critique d'art, principalement italienne, bien avant de se trouver un nom. Plus que tout autre historien, Roberto Longhi aura contribué de manière décisive à l'éclaircissement d'une telle notion : d'abord en identifiant, dès 1914, un mouvement "lumineux" italien, placé sous l'égide de Piero della Francesca, puis en s'attachant, en 1952, à sa spécificité florentine autour de la figure de Domenico Veneziano. Près de deux décennies après avoir été nommée, la "peinture de lumière" apparaît aujourd'hui comme l'un des thèmes majeurs d'une étude renouvelée de la première Renaissance italienne.

The aim of this article is to analyse the Renaissance poem Sarca, whose authorship is attributed to the Italian humanist Pietro Bembo, and to indicate the ancient inspirations of the work. The main model for the work is Carmen 64 by Catullus, although the author also refers to other Roman poets. The intertextual relations between Sarca and the hypotexts are presented on various levels. The analysis focuses on showing parallel elements of the setting and takes in consideration the few similarities at the linguistic and stylistic level. Genre-wise Sarca is classified as an epithalamium of an aythiological character. Its characteristics typical of the Renaissance era are also highlighted. The article also brings up the history of the poem and the topic of its attribution, presenting an extensive state of research.

Les réflexions de Husserl dans L’origine de la géométrie ont connu une réception qui excède le cadre de la philosophie des sciences ou de l’histoire. On peut, à partir d’une lecture des cours de Merleau-Ponty sur l’institution (1954-1955) et le Beilage III (1960-1961), de l’« Introduction » de Derrida à sa traduction (1961), mais surtout de L’origine de la perspective (1987) de l’historien d’art et philosophe Hubert Damisch, saisir toute l’importance de sa théorie de l’historicité et des idéalités abstraites pour l’esthétique et la philosophie de l’art en France. Cet article prend pour exemple le cas de la perspective, sujet à controverse pour les historiens d’art. Despite the popularity of Renaissance pattern poetry, this verse form was neglected in the English poetical tradition. I suggest that this lack of recognition may be explored by looking into its presentation as an oriental import, which chose to ignore its relationship with classical Greek models. The inspiration for George Puttenham’s shift of attribution from the West to the East in his Arte of English Poesie can be explained by the early modern fascination with travel writing and by Puttenham’s knowledge of the work of a fellow literary theorist, Richard Willes, and his novel poetical compositions.

Attribution and the study of painting pose two important questions to researchers: the choice of methodology and terminology used in describing and highlighting the characteristics of a work of art. "Visual research" as an integrated approach to the problems of reception and creativity forms a system of stable principles of analysis of the monument, focused on the study of the vision and complex extraverbal aspects of the existence of the subject in the historical and cultural space. The analysis of painting involves an integrated approach based on the study of technique and material, the features of shaping and means of artistic expression, iconography and semantics, the creative method of the master and the consumer's reaction, the role in the context of everyday culture and the principles of reception in a synchronous and diachronic cut.In the 19th century, the Italian art critic Giovanni Morelli made a significant contribution to the theory and practice of painting by outstanding masters of the Renaissance. Methods based on deep knowledge in the field of human anatomy and the analysis of the artist's professional skills have influenced not only the history of art, but also the development of criminology, criminology, psychoanalytic theory and psychotherapeutic practice. This article analyzes the method of Giovanni Morelli, which is adapted not only to the needs of attribution, but is also applicable to forensic tasks requiring the analysis of human skills and habits, as well as the identification or attribution of works of art.

Abstract This article is part of A Comparative Study of Byrd Songs: Volume 17 of the British Renaissance Re-Attribution and Modernization (BRRAM) series. Volume 17 offers evidence to re-assign the authorship of the 29 texts in William Byrd’s linguistic group. Volumes 1-2 of the series present a new computational-linguistic attribution method that reassigns all of the tested 303 texts from the British Renaissance to a Workshop of only six ghostwriters: Byrd, William Percy, Josuah Sylvester, Gabriel Harvey, Richard Verstegan and Gabriel Harvey. This article is a fragment from Volume 17 that presents new evidence, beyond the quantitative linguistics, for one of the Byrd re-assignments, “Michael Cavendish’s” Airs (1598), together with a modernizing translation of a representative sample of poetry from the linguistically-tested text. Airs is a rarely commented on work that tends to appear in studies of the self-plagiarisms within it, or between it and other texts. Only a single private copy of Airs has survived; this closeting is likely to have been the result of its dedication addressing Lady Arbella, who repeatedly unsuccessfully plotted with the Cavendishes and Percys to gain the British throne, first after Elizabeth I’s reign, and then after James I’s. The dedication appears to have been a propagandistic marker of support during Arbella’s attempt in 1609 to marry Seymour to challenge James I’s claim, which ended with Arbella’s imprisonment and premature death. The Airs book is likely to have been published to encourage this effort and was probably closeted and had its title-page backdated to 1598 when the attempt failed. Additionally, a comparative study is included in the Appendix between a poem in Airs and a translation of a song it echoes from Giovanni Croce.

En dépit de longues discussions sur la signification globale de l'image, en particulier à propos de l'identification des trois figures situées à l'avant-plan, la Flagellation reste un profond mystère. Dans le prolongement d'une riche et abondante tradition herméneutique, cet article propose une nouvelle interprétation de cette célèbre peinture qui s’écarte d'une lecture politique (fondée sur ses liens supposés avec l'Empire byzantin) ainsi que de la vision traditionnelle affirmant la banalité de son iconographie. I argue that greater attention to several key sources can adjust our understanding of both the text and its kind. The article examines the early reception of Folly’s speech; a pivotal passage in the text itself; crucial translation choices; and Erasmus’ reflections on both his creation and the nature of satire. I investigate the idea of the Praise as a satire not to quibble about generic designations but to bring into relief Erasmus’ contribution to questions of creative licence during the Renaissance; in particular, the permissible scope of social critique, or how to approach the darker side of epideixis.

Theophanes the Greek was one of the well-known artists of exceptional personality who lived in the second half of the 14th century. His talent stood out on account of the expressionist manner in which he portrayed his art creations and their impact on the school of Russian religious painting. His artistic talent, “swift brush” painting manner and life adventure can be compared with those of Doménikos Theotokópoulos (El Greco), another famous Greek painter, who brought the Cretan dramatic and expressionistic style to the West, influencing the Spanish Renaissance two hundred years after Theophanes. The artistic heritage of Theophanes stands between the short vibrant period of the Palaeologan Renaissance when the Byzantine Empire went through a terminal crisis, and the European Proto-Italian Renaissance. The artist seized the opportunity to unleash his creative work in the ancient Russian cities, unfolding his talent in the creation of large mural paintings. Characterized by his contemporaries as “Theophanes the Greek, icon painter and philosopher”, he enjoyed a high reputation in medieval Russian society. Present article questions Theophanes’ belonging to the hesychast movement and the attribution of the Muscovite icons and manuscripts to the painter. Considering the impact of Theophanes on Russian visual art, D. Talbot Rice stated: “It was thanks to the teaching of Greek immigrants like Theophanes that a sound foundation was established Russian painting, and it was on this basis that local styles were founded.” And it was in the Russian principalities that Theophanes developed his very distinctive style, enjoying carte blanche from the princes and boyars (aristocracy) to apply his creativity in various domains.

This article is devoted to the problem of the attribution of architectural graphics, the identification and analysis of the individual graphic style of Domenico (Dementi Ivanovich) Gilardi, a master of Swiss origin, the chief architect of post-fire Moscow. In spite of the formal, stylistic and iconographic knowledge of the Moscow Empire style, the issue of attribution of architectural graphics to the period remains open. The work of Gilardi is no exception in this respect.The objective of this research is to use stylistic and iconographic analysis of his most outstanding works to form an idea of the nature of his graphic style and its peculiarities. The relevance of the topic is dictated by the need to distinguish the graphic works of Gilardi himself from the sheets created by his pupil — the architect A. Grigoriev (and in the longer term — to identify the “hand” of A. Grigoriev).The method of formal and stylistic analysis and iconographic comparison was chosen. Artistic sources are the most striking architectural and graphic works by Gilardi, which have not yet been studied in detail: several signed drawings, as well as a draft design of a park pavilion from the collection of the Shchusev State Museum of Architecture (the latter was introduced into academic circles by the author and is central in terms of representation). The style of the unrealised design of the park pavilion reflects the historical perspective of birth, development and decline of the Moscow Empire style in one of its variants. The style distinctly refers to the antique, Renaissance and classic monuments.The following complex of problems is being solved within the framework of the research: the genesis of the post-fire Moscow style is presented, the specific features of the architectural graphics of the first quarter of the 19th century are evaluated; the sketch of the park pavilion and the series of several drawings (so called master’s exemplary graphics) are described and analyzed as the basis for the attribution; the work of Gilardi is examined in the context of the global neoclassicism style development.The conducted study, in which the relationship between architectural and graphic style plays a key role, allows us to form an idea of Gilardi’s individual style and approach a more complex issue of attribution, chronology and style in his constructions. The unity of harmony, beauty and technicality of Gilardi’s works is expressed in the juxtaposition of his manner with the ideal of timeless classicism.

De Saint-Denys Garneau (1912-1943) a voulu originellement déployer son œuvre en un diptyque littéraire et pictural. Nous tentons une reconstitution de l’aventure du peintre, de l’éclosion de son désir, en passant par ses études de dessin à l’École des beaux-arts de Montréal (1924-1927) où il côtoie les Palardy, Jori Smith, Borduas et Lemieux. Il retrouve les trois derniers à l’atelier de Holgate où il s’exerce à l’art du nu (1932). Il s’astreint à une formation personnelle — puisque la quête artistique est basée sur la quête ontologique et sur la culture générale — et ambitionne d’être le premier à « renouveler l’art du paysage » et aussi de participer à un mouvement de renaissance artistique en son pays. Il se lie plus tard avec d’autres peintres dont Muhlstock et Lyman et des critiques d’art. Puis, vient l’abandon de la peinture qui suit celle de l’écriture (1937). Sa quête artistique se mue ou encore est englobée dans une aventure spirituelle et religieuse qui a préséance jusqu’à la fin de sa vie. S’il n’a pas eu le temps de développer un style propre contrairement aux autres peintres de sa connaissance, son œuvre picturale n’est pas sans mérite. The article deals with the problem of structural organization of liberal arts fragments in the diachronic world view. It considers the application of a prototypical approach to the knowledge categorization about the types and directions of culture and to the differentiation of the tools of their verbal representation in the metalanguage. The classification of the concepts “Renaissance” and “Baroque” under the criteria of modern linguo-cognitive science is proposed. The article provides definitions of prototypical and peripheral units of the categories analyzed and substantiates the differences in their significates. Special attention is paid to non-central category members, as well as to parameters that confirm their categorical status and place them in the general subsystems’ hierarchy. The study substantiates the polysemy of the terms “Renaissance” and “Baroque”, which is caused by the heterogeneity of the classes they represent. Based on the material of specific category units, it demonstrates the possibility of changing their positions as class members and analyzes the causes and consequences of their re-categorization. The article considers the problem of variability and openness of the range of the categories under study, as well as the criteria of their autonomy and integrity. It is shown that the category stability depends on the prototype identification degree and its differences from the central units in other classes. The main conclusions were obtained by analyzing the meanings of the investigated terms and identifying patterns of their attribution to the texts of the corresponding cultural stages. The study novelty lies in the application of cognitive analysis methods to the concepts and term units of the Humanities metalanguage. The research relevance is accounted for by the need to further study the semantics and functioning of interdisciplinary special units in poetics, literary history, art history, cultural studies, and aesthetics. It helps to distinguish the meanings and contexts of using names that are synonymous and antonymous.

The discovery of an oil painting in seriously damaged condition with an important historical and a heterodox detail with possible origins in the late fifteenth century has afforded the opportunity for Raman microscopic analysis prior to its restoration being undertaken. The painting depicts a risen Christ following His crucifixion in a ‘ noli me tangere ’ pose with three women in an Italian terrace garden with a stone balustrade overlooking a rural landscape and an undoubted view of late-medieval Florence. The picture has suffered much abuse and is in very poor condition, which is possibly attributable to its controversial portrayal of a polydactylic Christ with six toes on His right foot. By the late sixteenth century, after the Council of Trent, this portrayal would almost certainly have been frowned upon by the Church authorities or more controversially as a depiction of the holy. Raman spectroscopic analysis of the pigments places the painting as being consistent chronologically with the Renaissance period following the identification of cinnabar, haematite, red lead, lead white, goethite, verdigris, caput mortuum and azurite with no evidence of more modern synthetic pigments or of modern restoration having been carried out. An interesting pigment mixture found here is that of the organic dye carmine and cinnabar to produce a particular bright red pigment coloration. Stratigraphic examination of the paint fragments has demonstrated the presence of an orange resin layer immediately on top of the canvas substrate, effectively rendering the pigment as a sandwich between this substratal resin and the overlying varnish. The Raman spectroscopic evidence clearly indicates that an attribution of the artwork to the Renaissance is consistent with the scientific analysis of the pigment composition. This article reassesses artistic production in Rome at the time of the temporary return of Pope Urban V, between 1367 and 1370, after a lengthy period of absence of the papacy in Avignon, and offers new insights into the long-term impact of this production. It does so by starting from a thoroughly neglected artwork now in the Museo Storico Artistico del Tesoro di S. Pietro, a victim of the traditional interpretative dichotomy as either a work by Giotto or not. By taking a different methodological approach, which is to think in terms of movement of patrons and artists, and on the basis of combined technical/visual analysis and documentary sources, the article sheds new light on this painting, offering new proposals concerning its dating, attribution, original location and function. It then addresses its historical contextualization and significance, allowing us to rethink art in Rome in the fourteenth century by discussing the role that the circulation of patrons and artists played in creating new forms. This discussion not only contributes to a better understanding of the art produced in Rome in the Trecento but also throws some light on the very origins and nature of Renaissance art.

Dating to the 1530s, the Latin poem Sarca was published in 1842 in Rome by Angelo Mai based on a manuscript found in Vienna. Forty years after publication, the incompatibility of this edition with the Viennese manuscript was first noticed. In the second half of the last century, a polemic began challenging the theory, previously considered certain, that Sarca’s author was Pietro Bembo. Researchers named Girolamo Fracastor, Andrea Navager and Agostino Beazzan, among others, as possible authors of the text in addition to Bembo. The question of the poem’s authorship remains unresolved to this day. The aim of this article is to analyse the turbulent and hypothesis-rich debate on the attribution of the Renaissance work. The poem has been subjected to internal criticism, i.e. inferences about the author’s person based on content analysis. Historical and bibliographical indicators of the work have also been examined. The article also attempts to answer the question of whether the latest techniques used in the analysis of the linguistic and stylistic features of the text, such as the methods of computer stylometry, could prove helpful in determining the authorship of the Sarca poem.

Contemporary Orthodox church art in Poland is an issue that influences many areas of research. Current research focuses both on the work of individual artists, as well as on new formal solutions used by them, and aimed at enriching the Orthodox tradition. Apart from Jerzy Nowosielski and Adam Stalony-Dobrzański, who contributed to the renaissance of Orthodox church art in Poland, the works of Sotyrys Pantopulos and their correct attribution also deserve more attention. Two sets of icons depicting the Pantocrator and the Virgin Mary painted in 1969 by Pantopulos for the iconostasis designed by Stalony-Dobrzański for the Orthodox Cathedral of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God in Wrocław and the Orthodox Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Gródek near Białystok are examples of this. For many years their authorship was mainly attributed to Stalony-Dobrzański. Today, both pairs of icons found a secondary location as a result of the reconstruction of an iconostasis (Gródek, 1995) or its dismantling (Wrocław, 2019) – in this case, according to the opinion of the church’s custodians, as a structure that does not meet the requirements of the Orthodox liturgy. For that reason art historians have an urgent task to bring the importance of these works to public attention, and ultimately to have them entered into the heritage register. It appears that this is the only chance to preserve this legacy in an unchanged condition.

Ne possédant ni l’autorité d’une présence continue dans l’histoire, ni le prestige d’une dignité littéraire, la comédie doit définir son espace générique, se positionner par rapport aux esthétiques voisines ou concurrentes. Recherche d’un ton, d’un champ de représentation et d’un discours sur le monde : l’histoire de la comédie au XVIIe siècle est celle de la quête d’un tracé, susceptible d’asseoir l’identité du genre sans l’enfermer dans des limites étroites. Ce travail s’est fait par la conjugaison et l’alternance subtile de deux mouvements contradictoires : l’un expansif ; l’autre restrictif et réflexif, incitant les auteurs à définir la singularité du genre. Le mouvement d’expansion commence par une transgression des limites de l’espace comique hérité de la tradition antique : celui du « bas » — corporel, social, moral. La comédie se fonde ainsi moins sur la définition d’un espace que sur son traitement : elle cultivera la vérité de la peinture, qu’elle opposera à la stylisation des grands genres. Se comprenant comme un espace distinct de celui du salon ou de la cour, elle construit aussi progressivement son propre discours esthétique et moral sur la galanterie, la raison, l’honnêteté, les plaisirs et la vertu. Elle adopte désormais un point de vue singulier, et son ancrage dans l’espace se confondra désormais avec la singularité de ce regard. Et c’est à partir de cette relation critique singulière à l’espace du monde que la comédie peut à nouveau songer à la variété, à la fantaisie, à la transgression des bornes qu’elle s’est assignée. La comédie-ballet peut ainsi être interprétée comme un jeu virtuose sur les espaces : le lieu de la comédie est celui de la norme et de la critique du ridicule ; celui du ballet, l’espace de la fantaisie poétique du fou, de la variété esthétique et du monde renversé. Entre définition normée des espaces à l’aune de la raison et transgression jubilatoire de ces mêmes limites, la comédie entretient donc, avant tout, une relation ludique à l’espace.

Книга “Questo libro fu di Andrea Palladio”. Il codice Destailleur B de l’Ermitage (2015), выпущенная О. Ландзарини и Р. Мартинис, представляет собой первую научную публикацию сборника итальянских архитектурных рисунков XVI в., хранящегося в научной библиотеке Государственного Эрмитажа. В рецензии рассматривается история изучения этого альбома, который имел особое значение в эволюции архитектурного рисунка эпохи Ренессанса и вызывал большой интерес у исследователей XIX-XXI вв. Автор высоко оценивает качество каталога рисунков альбома, выполненного на современном научном уровне с учетом последних публикаций по теме, и рассматривает основные положения и выводы исследования. Далее Е.А. Ефимова вступает в полемику с авторами книги по ряду важных вопросов, включающих атрибуцию альбома, возможность его связи с наследием А. Палладио, его соотношение с ближайшими аналогами, взаимодействие с другими авторами и взаимосвязь с известными сборниками ренессансных рисунков на античные сюжеты. В итоге автор приходит к выводу о наличии в книге, несмотря на многие достоинства, существенных недостатков, главным из которых она считает изолированное рассмотрение альбома Destailleur B в отрыве от его параллелей в архитектурной графике XVI-XVII вв. Она считает необходимым выпуск нового издания, основанного на детальном изучении оригиналов рисунков и включающего рассматриваемый альбом в широкий исторический контекст. Book “Questo libro fu di Andrea Palladio”. Il codice Destailleur B de l’Ermitage (2015), published by O. Landzarini and R. Martinis, is the first scholarly publication of a collection of 16th-century Italian architectural drawings held in the State Hermitage Research Library. The review examines the history of the study of this album, which was of particular importance in the evolution of the architectural design of the Renaissance and aroused great interest among researchers of the 19th-21st centuries. The author highly appreciates the quality of the album's catalog of drawings, made at the modern scientific level, taking into account the latest publications on the topic, and considers the main provisions and conclusions of the study. Further, E.A. Efimova enters into a debate with the authors of the book on a number of important issues, including the attribution of the album, the possibility of its connection with the legacy of A. Palladio, its relationship with its closest analogues, interaction with other authors and the relationship with famous collections of Renaissance drawings on antique subjects. As a result, the author comes to the conclusion that, despite many advantages, the book has significant shortcomings, the main of which she considers the isolated consideration of the Destailleur B album in isolation from its parallels in the architectural graphics of the 16th-17th centuries. She considers it necessary to release a new edition based on a detailed study of the original drawings and including the album in question in a broad historical context.
