Abstract:

Abstract:
Recent studies indicate that partisan electoral interventions, a situation where a foreign power tries to determine the election results in another country, can have significant effects on the election results in the targeted country as well as other important influences. Nevertheless, research on this topic has been hindered by a lack of systematic data of electoral interventions. In this article, I introduce the Partisan Electoral Intervention by the Great Powers dataset (PEIG), which provides data on all such interventions by the US and the USSR/Russia between 1946 and 2000. After describing the dataset construction process, I note some interesting patterns in the data, a few of which stand in contrast to claims made about electoral interventions in the public sphere and give an example of PEIG’s utility. I then describe some applications of PEIG for research on electoral interventions in particular and for peace research in general.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Alouatta guariba clamitans Cabrera, 1940 is an endemic species of the Atlantic Forest that occurs from south Bahia, Brazil, extending south to the province of Misiones, Argentina. In Rio de Janeiro state, the species was classified as threatened, indicating that attention is needed for the conservation of this taxon. Additionally, an outbreak of yellow fever spread throughout the southeastern states of Brazil from January 2017 until March 2018 seriously threatening Rio de Janeiro populations of the species. Herein, we aimed to provide the first estimates of A. g. clamitans encounter rate, density, and population size in the Ilha Grande State Park (PEIG), which is part of the Atlantic Forest biome of Brazil. Data were collected in two different periods, the first between December 2003 and May 2005, and the second from August 2009 to May 2010, and information on encounter rates and behavior was collected to better understand aspects of species' ecology. The estimated encounter rate in the first period through the distance sampling method was 0.04 ± 0.01 individuals per kilometer. Nine groups were recorded in the second period of the study, with 47 individuals along 3 km. Our estimates of encounter rate, density and population size were low and reinforces the need to initiate species monitoring and assess the impact that yellow fever outbreaks may have on PEIG populations. The results presented here can be a starting point to support future strategic actions for the species, to measure impacts and to the management of the species, and for a conservation program.

Abstract:
Pseudomurein endoisopeptidases cause lysis of the cell walls of methanogens by cleaving the isopeptide bond Ala-ε-Lys in the peptide chain of pseudomurein. PeiW and PeiP are two thermostable pseudomurein endoisopeptidases encoded by phage ΨM100 ofMethanothermobacter wolfeiand phages ΨM1 and ΨM2 ofMethanothermobacter marburgensis, respectively. A continuous assay using synthetic peptide substrates was developed and used in the biochemical characterisation of recombinant PeiW and PeiP. The advantages of these synthetic peptide substrates over natural substrates are sensitivity, high purity, and characterisation and the fact that they are more easily obtained than natural substrates. In the presence of a reducing agent, purified PeiW and PeiP each showed similar activity under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Both enzymes required a divalent metal for activity and showed greater thermostability in the presence of Ca2+. PeiW and PeiP involve a cysteine residue in catalysis and have a monomeric native conformation. The kinetic parameters,KMandkcat, were determined, and theε-isopeptide bond between alanine and lysine was confirmed as the bond lysed by these enzymes in pseudomurein. The new assay may have wider applications for the general study of peptidases and the identification of specific methanogens susceptible to lysis by specific pseudomurein endoisopeptidases.

Abstract:
Polyethylene/montmorillonite (PE/MMT) nanocomposites were prepared by in situ polymerization. The morphology of MMT/MgCl2/TiCl4 catalyst and PE/MMT nanocomposites was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It can be seen that MMT/MgCl2/TiCl4 catalyst remained the original MMT sheet structures and many holes were found in MMT and the morphology of PE/MMT nanocomposites is part of the sheet in the form of existence, as most of the petal structure. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were carried out to characterize all the samples. XRD results reveal that the original basal reflection peak of PEI1 and PEI2 disappears completely and that of PEI3 become very weak. MMT/MgCl2/TiCl4 catalyst was finely dispersed in the PE matrix. Instead of being individually dispersed, most layers were found in thin stacks comprising several swollen layers.

Abstract:
Linear polyethyleneimine (L-PEI) was obtained from the acidic hydrolysis of poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) and employed in the synthesis of physically crosslinked L-PEI hydrogel, PC-L-PEIH, chemically crosslinked L-PEI hydrogel, CC-L-PEIH, and cryogels, CC-L-PEIC. The preparation of L-PEI-based hydrogel networks was carried out in two ways: 1) by cooling the L-PEI solution from 90 °C to room temperature, and 2) by crosslinking L-PEI chains with a crosslinker, glycerol diglycidyl ether = 20 °C for CC-L-PEIC. Furthermore, a polyphenolic compound, tannic acid (TA), with superior antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties as an active biomedical functional agent, was encapsulated during the synthesis process within L-PEI-based hydrogels and cryogels, at 10% and 25% (w/w) based on the L-PEI amount. A linear and higher TA release was observed from physically crosslinked PEI-based hydrogels containing 10% and 25% TA-containing PC-L-PEI/TAH within 6 h, with 9.5 ± 05 mg/g and 60.2 ± 3.8 mg/g cumulative released amounts, respectively. A higher antioxidant activity was observed for 25% TA containing PC-L-PEI/TAH with 53.6 ± 5.3 µg/mL total phenol content and 0.48 ± 0.01 µmole Trolox equivalent/g. The minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of PC-L-PEIH and CC-L-PEIC networks against both E. coli (ATCC 8739) and Gram-positive B. subtilis (ATCC 6633) bacteria was determined at 5 mg/mL, whereas the MBC value of 10 mg/mL for CC-L-PEIH networks against the same bacteria was achieved.

Abstract:
PeiW (UniProtKB Q7LYX0) and PeiP (UniProtKB Q77WJ4) are the two major pseudomurein endoisopeptidases (Pei) that are known to cleave pseudomurein cell-wall sacculi of the members of the methanogenic ordersMethanobacterialesandMethanopyrales. Both enzymes, originating from prophages specific for some methanogenic archaeal species, hydrolyze the (Ala)-Lys bond of the peptide linker between adjacent pseudomurein layers. Because lysozyme is not able to cleave the pseudomurein cell wall, the enzymes are used in protoplast preparation and in DNA isolation from pseudomurein cell-wall-containing methanogens. Moreover, PeiW increases the probe permeability ratio and enables fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and catalyzed reporter deposition (CARD-) FISH experiments to be performed on these methanogens.

Abstract:
(P0,001).Studies were carried out on a linear assessment of the exterior first calving cows of Ayrshire breed (n572), which are the daughters of 21 bulls, on the basis of which the UDC and FLC, the productively exterior indices PEI2 and PEI6, the Spearmans rank correlation coefficient between the indices and the intraherd breeding value (BVin) bulls was calculated. Improvement of the exterior in the selection of assessments due to the lack of reliable correlation between the UDC and FLC with the BVin. A reliable high correlation was found between the UDC and the final assessment of the exterior, the indices PEI2 and PEI6 0.745, 0.706 and 0.710, respectively. It was found that with the selection of 25 of bulls, the assessment itself increases by 155 (P0.001) and the PEI2 increases significantly by 48 (P0.001), while selecting 10 of bulls by 247 and 81 (P 0.001) respectively. The selection of PEI2 gave high and reliable breeding differentials (P0.001) for a yield of 430 kg, for a final assessment of 0.67 points, for the PEI2 102, for BVin 108. In the selection by UDC and FLC 25 of bulls were identified: Labry and Nosto. The daughters of these bulls with a loss of milk yield by 115 kg reliably improve the udder by 0.3 (P0.05), feet and legs by 1.1 (P0.001) and the final assessment by 1.0 point (P0.001).

Abstract:
"PEGylated PEIs are intensely studied non-viral vectors for gene delivery, having high transfection efficiencies. Using all-atom molecular dynamics simulations, the interaction of hyperbranched polyethylenimine polyethylene glycol (HPEI-PEG) with DNA was investigated for different number of PEG chains per HPEI core, and, to this end, a new CHARMM Force Field for PEG was developed. The obtained force field parameters are validated by the good agreement of structural measures, such as the radius of gyration, with experimental evidence. The reported investigations reveal an upper bound for the PEG fraction in the modelled HPEI-PEG polymers. The addition of PEG reduces cytotoxicity, increases solubility, while still ensuring a high efficiency of forming polyplexes with DNA. Useful correlations between the copolymer structure and polyplex properties are observed, along with insights on the dynamics of the formation of hydrogen bonds between the HPEI core and DNA."

Abstract:
Current cell tags using dyes lose their luminescence quickly and are not suitable for optical barcoding. Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs), on the other hand, can be engineered to emit different wavelengths, thus permitting tagging of various cells at the same time. Core/shell luminescent quantum dots, cadmium selenide ( CdSe ) and zinc sulphide ( ZnS ), were synthesized and incorporated into polystyrene (PS) particles grafted with carboxyl groups using microemulsion polymerization method. Highly luminescent monodispersed PS particles with diameters from 30 nm to 50 nm were chosen for subsequent surface modification. Two series of surface modifications were carried out with PS particles. One was modified with poly(L-Lysine) (PLL), polyethylenimine (PEI), Poly(Ethylene Glycol) (PEG) and folic acid (FA) side chains in sequence through chemical bonding. Another was conjugated with PEG and FA in sequence. The folic acid side chains can enter target cells via folate receptors and assisted in the uptake of the luminescent particles into the cells. This property allows them to be used as fluorescent labels for marking their ingress into cells and also for a cornucopia of biomedical applications.

Abstract:
Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) involving polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polyethyleneimine (PEI), which contain amines, were produced and analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–vis spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy (RS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for the spectral and structural analyses of PEG-PEI-SWCNTs. PEG-PEI-SWCNTs demonstrated peaks using UV–vis spectroscopy at 300.98 nm, have a broad peak at 2θ = 23.51, linked to 002 with d-spacing (3.7816), and have crystalline sizes of 8.48 nm. In PEG-PEI-SWCNTs, TEM images demonstrated the accumulation of SWCNTs with PEG-PEI due to an increased main grain size with functionalization to 80.68 nm. The D and G bands in PEG-PEI-SWCNTs moved to 1,292 and 1,586 cm−1, respectively. SWCNTs are observed as a bundle of inhomogeneous, long-curved accumulates containing multitudes of tubes. The PEG-PEI-SWCNTs have a tubular structure that demonstrates particles scattered alongside the carbon nanotube sidewalls, which indicate that PEG and PEI are conjugated to the SWCNTs. Cytotoxicity evaluation of PEG-PEI-SWCNTs (6.25–100 µg/mL) in the breast cancer AMJ13 cell line was conducted for 24 and 72 hr, and the results showed enhanced toxicity to the tumor cells and decreased cytotoxicity against rhabdomyosarcoma (RD) normal cells.

Abstract:
The purpose of this work was to investigate the porous polyetherimide scaffold (P-PEIs) as an alternative biopolymer for bone tissue engineering. The P-PEIs was fabricated via solvent casting and particulate leaching technique. The morphology, phase composition, roughness, hydrophilicity, and biocompatibility of P-PEIs were evaluated and compared with polyetherimide (PEI) and Ti6Al4V disks. P-PEIs showed a biomimetic porous structure with a modulus of 78.95 ± 2.30 MPa. The water contact angle of P-PEIs was 75.4 ± 3.39°, which suggested that P-PEIs had a wettability surface. Moreover, P-PEIs provides a feasible environment for cell adhesion and proliferation. The relative cell adhesion capability and the cell morphology on P-PEIs were better than PEI and Ti6Al4V samples. Furthermore, the MC3T3-E1 cells on P-PEIs showed faster proliferation rate than other groups. It was revealed that the P-PEIs could be a potential material for the application of bone regeneration.

Abstract:
Aim: To compare the prevalence of PEIR in Australian and Saudi Arabian children and to investigate the relationship of PEIR with dental development. Study design: Panoramic (PAN) radiographs of 842 Australian and 456 Saudi children were screened for PEIR. The dental ages of the children with and without PEIR were assessed from the PAN radiographs using the method of Demirjian and co-workers. Results: The subject prevalence of PEIR was not statistically significant between Australian (2%) and Saudi children (0.6%) (p>0.1). The teeth most commonly affected by PEIR were the mandibular second molars and premolars. Dental impaction was observed in 31% of teeth with PEIR compared to only 0.1% of control teeth (p<0.0001). Children with PEIR showed a mean delay in dental development of 0.54±0.85 years compared with ageand gender-matched controls (p<0.0001). Conclusions: The present study provides the first evidence that there are no differences in PEIR prevalence between Australian and Saudi populations, and that dental development is significantly delayed in children with PEIR.

AbstractPoly(vinylalcohol)/poly(ethyleneglycol)/poly(ethyleneimine) blend membranes were prepared by solution casting followed by solvent evaporation. The chemical structure of the prepared membranes was analyzed by FTIR and DSC. The sorption behavior as well as the permeabilities of the membranes for pure CO2 and N2 were investigated. The results show that the PVA/PEI/PEG membranes possess a higher permeability of CO2 and a lower permeability of N2. The membrane displays a CO2 permeability of 27 Barrer, and a N2 permeability of 3 Barrer at 25°C and 1 bar. CO2 sorption behavior of the composite membrane, which can be classified as a dual-mode sorption model, and N2 sorption behavior of the copolymeric membrane is in agreement with the Fickian diffusion model.

Abstract:
CXC chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) is a promising therapeutic target. Previous studies have shown that intracellular delivery of siRNA to knockdown CXCR4 expression in cancer cells is an effective therapeutic strategy. To prepare efficient magnetic nucleic acid carriers, it is now necessary to improve the endocytosis efficiency of PEGylated magnetic nanoparticles. In our work, Heptafluorobutyryl-polyethylene glycol-polyethyleneimine (FPP) was first prepared and then used to coat magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) to obtain magnetic nanocarriers FPP@MNPs. The materials were characterized by 19 F-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The biosecurity of FPP@MNPs was confirmed by cell viability and apoptosis experiments. Cellular uptake of FPP@MNPs and siRNA transfection enhanced by external magnetic fields were detected by fluorescence microscopy, confocal laser microscopy, and flow cytometry. The results show that the cellular uptake efficiency of FPP@MNPs was significantly improved, and transfection efficiency reached more than 90%. The knockdown of CXCR4 on the 4 T1 cell membrane was confirmed by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and flow cytometry. In conclusion, the fluorinated cationic polymer-coated magnetic nanoparticles FPP@MNPs can be loaded with siRNA to reduce CXCR4 expression as well as be expected to be efficient universal siRNA carriers.

Abstract:
Background: The pathogenesis of penile intraepithelial neoplasia (PeIN) is unclear but human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and polymorphisms in human leucocyte antigen (HLA). Objectives: To examine the prevalence of HPV DNA and HLA in PeIN. Methods: Adult Caucasian men with a clinical and histological diagnosis of PeIN, that is, Bowenoid papulosis (BP), Bowen’s disease of penis (BDP) and erythroplasia of Queyrat (EQ) were selected and phenotyped from the clinical records. DNA was extracted from blood and paraffin-embedded sections for HLA and HPV typing, respectively. Human leucocyte antigen allele frequencies were compared with those derived from the UK–based Caucasian population. Results: Seventy-two cases of PeIN (20 BP, 34 BDP and 18 EQ) were studied. Human papillomavirus DNA was identified in 65/72 (90.2%) PeIN; Alphapapillomavirus types were detected in 62/72 (85%) followed by Betapapillomavirus types in 9/72 (12.5%) and cutaneous types in 7/72 (9.7%); HPV16 was the most prevalent genotype at 35/72 (48.6%) followed by HPV33 at 7/72 (9.7%); multiple infections were seen in 18/72 (25%) PeIN. HLA-C*15 (Bonferroni corrected p = 0.049) confers susceptibility to PeIN, whereas HLA-DQA1*01 (corrected p = 0.02) protects against PeIN. HPV16-associated PeIN cases showed no statistically significant association with HLA genotype after multiple corrections. Conclusion: Human papillomavirus is involved in the pathogenesis of PeIN. Immunogenotype may play a role in the pathogenesis of PeIN.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTA recently describedEdwardsiella ictaluritype III secretion system (T3SS) with functional similarity to theSalmonellapathogenicity island 2 T3SS is required for replication in channel catfish head-kidney-derived macrophages (HKDM) and virulence in channel catfish. Quantitative PCR and Western blotting identified low pH and phosphate limitation as conducive to expression of theE. ictaluriT3SS, growth conditions that mimic the phagosomal environment. Mutagenesis studies demonstrated that expression is under the control of the EsrAB two-component regulatory system. EsrB also induces upregulation of the AraC-type regulatory protein EsrC, which enhances expression of the EscB/EseG chaperone/effector operon in concert with EsrB and induces expression of the pEI1-encoded effector, EseH. EsrC also induces expression of a putative type VI secretion system translocon protein, EvpC, which is secreted under the same low-pH conditions as the T3SS translocon proteins. The pEI2-encoded effector, EseI, was upregulated under low-pH and low-phosphate conditions but not in an EsrB- or EsrC-dependent manner. Mutations of EsrA and EsrB both resulted in loss of the ability to replicate in HKDM and full attenuation in the channel catfish host. Mutation of EsrC did not affect intracellular replication but did result in attenuation in catfish. Although EsrB is the primary transcriptional regulator forE. ictalurigenes within the T3SS pathogenicity island, EsrC regulates expression of the plasmid-carried effectoreseHand appears to mediate coordinated expression of the T6SS with the T3SS.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of pre-eruptive intracoronal radiolucencies (PEIR) from panoramic radiographs in Korean children and adolescents.
This study examined panoramic radiographs of 3,000 patients aged between 5 and 14 years old who visited ten dental hospitals in Korea. The age and gender of the patients, the tooth type, the number of intracoronal radiolucent lesions, and the location and size of the lesions were recorded.
The overall prevalence of patients with PEIR was 2.5%. The difference in the presence of PEIR between both genders was not significant. Within each tooth type, the mandibular first molar showed highest prevalence of PEIR (29.6%). The central part of the crown was the most frequently observed location of PEIR (56.8%). The size of the PEIR lesions was mostly limited to less than one-third of the thickness of coronal dentin.

Abstract:
Lichen sclerosus (LSc) with penile cancer is found in about two thirds of specimens. It has been hypothesized that LSc represents a precancerous condition. To qualify as such, in addition to cytological atypia and similarity with the invasive tumor, a spatial correlation between LSc and neoplastic lesions needs to be demonstrated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate such a spatial relationship. Circumcision (28 cases) and penectomy (81 cases) specimens were evaluated. All cases had LSc, penile intraepithelial neoplasia (PeIN), and/or invasive squamous cell carcinomas. We examined LSc in relation to invasive carcinoma, PeIN, and normal epithelia. Invasive squamous cell carcinomas, classified according to the World Health Organization criteria as non–human papillomavirus (HPV)-related and HPV-related PeIN, were present in 100 cases. Non-HPV-related (differentiated) PeIN was the most common subtype associated with LSc (89%). There were 5 spatial patterns identified: (1) LSc adjacent to PeIN (23%), (2) LSc adjacent and comprising PeIN (42%), (3) LSc next to and within invasive carcinomas (8%), (4) LSc throughout the sequence PeIN-invasive carcinoma (24%), and (5) LSc was separate (with normal tissue between the lesions) from PeIN and/or invasive carcinomas in a minority of cases (3%). LSc within the cancer was not previously described. In this series, we found 35 cases with LSc within invasive carcinomas. The striking continuous spatial relationship among LSc, PeIN, and/or invasive carcinoma as shown in this study may be a necessary (but not sufficient) condition for the hypothesis postulating LSc as a penile precancerous lesion.
