Wright, Almeda. The Spiritual Lives of Young African Americans. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780190664732.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Spiritual Lives of Young African Americans unearths the ways that African American Christian youth separate their lives and spirituality into mutually exclusive categories, with the result that their religious beliefs and practices do not directly impact their experiences of communal and systemic injustices. Yet this work argues that youth can and do teach the church and society myriad lessons through their theological reflections and actions. This book takes seriously the harsh realities of African American youth, who are often marginalized and even dehumanized within society and religious institutions. It draws upon in-depth theological reflection with adolescents and recent research on adolescent spirituality to examine the crucial role of spirituality in adolescent identity formation and the practical ways that youth negotiate the world around them. Listening to the voices of young African Americans, including activist and poets, pushes us to consider specific examples of fragmentation, including how young African Americans can reconcile their faith in God with their experiences of police brutality and ongoing violence. In conversation with young African Americans, this book also mines the resources of African American religious and theological traditions, and shows how collectively they can help youth to navigate fragmentation and respond to systemic injustice. In particular, abundant life, or choosing the way of life abundant, offers a vision of life and hope for young people who are too often surrounded by death. This work concludes with a critical pedagogy for integrating spirituality and fostering abundant life with African American youth.

Abstract:
This book presents the influence exerted by the media on children and adolescents in relation to the early experimentation with psychoactive substances. And the pedagogical-theological intervention as a preventive strategy. The influence on the human being through media mechanisms that condition him to the action expected by the conditioning, has been studied for a long time, by several authors such as Aldous Huxley with his book "Admirável Mundo Novo" that already addressed the conditionality of the human since the decade of 30. In the following decades, other theorists such as Edgar Morin and Guy Debord, analyzed how the human being is conditioned through mass culture and the society of the spectacle. The reality presented in relation to the conditioning of children and adolescents through the media has propelled the author, to seek preventive ways regarding the conditionality of human beings through the media. For that, it analyzed theorists like Paulo Freire and Michel Henry and their discoveries about the mediation of knowledge and the analysis of the Words of Christ and how they can contribute in the elaboration of pedagogical-theological interventions.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Fragmented spirituality among African American adolescents has been fostered and shaped in US society and African American churches, amid sometimes inadequate theology and pedagogy. However, the text concludes with the assertions that young African Americans are both in need of a vision of abundant life and capable of integrating spirituality. These young people have not given up on churches or on the importance of spirituality in their lives. However, many still do not know or believe that churches exist that value their voices and their lived realities. Therefore, churches and concerned adults must respond by working with youth to live life abundantly.

Pereira, Ivonete. Brazil Publishing, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.31012/978-65-5861-278-0.

Full text
Abstract:
“The children of Eve”: poor children and teenagers in the shadow of delinquency and abandonment in Florianópolis – 1900-1940 This book analyzes the discourses of intellectuals, jurists, and public authorities about poor children and teenagers in Florianópolis in the first four decades of the twentieth century. In the country’s pedagogical knowledge in that century, childhood had a “natural plasticity”, therefore susceptible to molding. Thus, shaping the child and adjusting it to the ideals of a “civilized” society became the pivot of passionate discourses in State Chambers and Federal Congress, as well as in the intellectual environment. In those, poor children and adolescents became synonyms of “abandoned” and/or “perverted. The discourses ranged from defending those children and adolescents, to protecting society against them, since they also “represented” a threat to the nation’s “order and progress”. When analyzing the experiences of those children we penetrate in a world of the “pitiful” and the “dangerous”, as well as in a network of intrigues. In it not only the “minors” were subject to a project of exclusion under the aegis of differentiated inclusion, but everyone that represents “the other”, the one that does not fit the normative system which, in that moment, was regarded as “universal and absolute”.
