Full textFrom its establishement at the beginning of the Second World War to its disappearance during the 2010s, lamparo fishing on the Roussillon coastline has underground profoud transformations. The itinerary of this interdependent fishing ecosystem, closely linked to an evolving and uncertain geographical context, went from a small-scale to a productivist mode during the 1960s, marked by commercial crisis. After a period of limitations and subsidies, a severe environmental crisis put a definitive ends to its productive and commercail trajectory at the begenning of the twenty-first century

Full textDuring more than a century, from the advent of Louis XV to the one of Charles X, the deserters constitued an incredible challenge to the power. Pressure moral and financial, blackmail, propaganda omnipresent and noisy, military occupation and re-pressed exemplary, all, including forgiveness, was vainly implemented by the authorities to subdue military disobedience. In Roussillon, this acknowledgement of failure was all the more previsible as all contribued to this result. Border to Spain, the area was a genuine ground of asylum for the deserters. Traversed by montains covered with dense forests, skirting mediterranéan sea, the topography of the places offered to these men innumerable places of retreat. In addition, the authorities ran up constantly against the character recalcitrant and rebel of these hearts which were striving to destroy all governmental measurements

Full textThe genealogical reconstitution of the Justafré family between 1497 and 1841 confirms that they are native of Las Illas, an isolated parish since 1659 in the Catalan Pyrenees between France and Spain. The prosopography of the male Justafrés, frome the XVIth to the XIXth century, shows their demographic and their socio-economic evolutions, based on farming, breeding and crafts, in the communities of Roussillon and Catalogne around Las Illas. As far as the middle of the XVIIth century, the Las Illas community, composed of a few land-holders, is structured around its church and its seigniory. La casa Justafré is a large part of it and plays an important role in it. There apperas a younger line of descendants who unite the lands, organize the weddings and hold seigniorial and municipal functions. From the middle of the XVIth century to the end of the XVIIIth century, the community organizes itself and enriches with new families, who, owings to the breaking apart of one of the Justafrés’ domains, buy the lands and create the hamlet of Las Illas. The development of the Baille farm-house shows the notability and the wealth of the casa pairal Justafré. The inheritance practice of the universal heir maintains the permanence and integrity of the family’s patrimony and structures the families in these Catalan communities. After the Revolution, this traditional frame changes when the right to equal sharing between heirs is enforced. Since this law threatens the unity of heritage, the family has to adapt to preserve its patrimony in these times of changes. In Las Illas, still the head of this rather unsubdued Catalan community, the Justafré family must take into account the French State which interferes in daily life, for example by fighting against smugglers and brigands

Full textSituated at the very south of France, far away from either French and Spanish capital, province of roussillon was at the boarder of the two big countries who fought about it all over the centuries. Small province, enclosed between mountains, isolated from Paris and Madrid, this very particular situation will give an effect on general politic of the french king, wich aim was to integrate the population, but also and above all on mentalities. Feodalism in this province will integrate this reality. Constitutions of Catalogne and French law will be in competition and will be invocated by the people of the province according to their own interest. Anyway, there are very seldom conflicts about the annexion by the french sovereign. Feodalism will be less important here than in other parts of France, precisely because of those particularities

Full textIn 1659, the peace treaty of the pyrenees devosts roussillon to beome part of france, but not making an much roussillon a province folly french. The transition was more or less slow according to the de dominious, alway gradual and oftea incomplete. It was not sufficient to remove the spanish domination from roussillon and its military hold : it was still necessary to organize this conquest and wia the hearte of the people, exasperated by years of war. Centuries of communal life and the identity of the language had beew wovea between roussillon and catalogne, closely knit tiea that a troety could not erase. The period following the treaty of the pyrenees lead to considerable uphevel in the province. In this troubled climate, the monarchy put into action a strategy to bring into lise the establishment on a human and cultural level. At the heart of this contriveance the diocese of Elne played xx a crucial role. This study goes contary to the dominant historiography on the subject projecting the analysis from the center towards the periphery, suggesting in general terms the process of adaption of the province, in order to appreciate what were the true political and religious stakes at the time. Moreover this consideration trys to give a dimension in comparing the local situation with other adjacent provinces of the kingdom, annexed during the 17th. Century. Certainly, it remains undeniable that the total integration of roussillon inte france truely happened only with the 3td. Republic. However, one would not dare to question the willingness of the monarchy's government under louis x1v. For this transition, and one can agree to recognize the power and efficiency of the governmental machine of the french monarch between 1659 and 1715

Full textFreemasonry in the Roussillon and Catalonia came to the fore within a new geo-political context. In fact, the Roussillon had only recently been attached to France (an altogether different context from that of a province which had always been part of France). What is more, Perpignan, a border town is geographically the furthest from Paris. The sociability of the Freemasons of the Roussillon under the Ancien Regime appeared as an on-going process and to understand it, presupposes the restitution of the networks to which the elite were attached and of which they were members. In the temple that the Masonic society formed, a web of relationships was woven, simple yet complex, visible or beneath the surface, stable or unstable. Having placed these elements in perspective, we will attempt to explicit the profile of the Masonic elite in the Roussillon. An elected society, the Freemasons were in search of recognition through its membership, which qualified the Assembly by closing it to others. This research aims to show an essential distinction between, on the one hand, Masonic daily life (within its Temples) which enables its structural evolution to be taken into account; and on the other hand, the brothers' daily lives within secular society. The study of the Masonic structure and its evolution within the Masonic Lodge of the Temples in Roussillon precedes the analysis of the destiny of the Masons as subjects and then as citizens

Full textIs there an official history ? This is a good question. Our Roussillon has an history, everybody knows but in fact no one think about the quality of his authors. Full textThis research is about definition and wording of regional identity in Roussillon -catalonian country annexed to France in 1659 -by a pool of local intellectuals, between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 21 st century. It shows the way those men received, adapte d, contested sometimes, french national theory first, and catalonian one, for the end of XIXth century, and the place they try to make for people of Roussillon into french nation. It follows specially the discussions between people of Roussillon and Catalonians during those two centuries, to understand the way the idea french Catalonians have of their neighbours and Spain, and the one Catalonians have of Roussillon and France, act on this process of identity building
