Abstract Motivation Partial differential equations (PDEs) is a well-established and powerful tool to simulate multi-cellular biological systems. However, available free tools for validation against data are on development. Results The PDEparams module provides a flexible interface and readily accommodates different parameter analysis tools in PDE models such as computation of likelihood profiles, and parametric bootstrapping, along with direct visualization of the results. To our knowledge, it is the first open, freely available tool for parameter fitting of PDE models. Availability and implementation PDEparams is distributed under the MIT license. The source code, usage instructions and examples are freely available on GitHub at github.com/systemsmedicine/PDE_params. Abstract:
It plays an important role in guiding laser remanufacturing process and process control to research temperature field of laser remanufacturing. A numerical simulation method of temperature field based on MATLAB PDE Tool is proposed. Theoretical model of temperature field is presented. The temperature fields at different times are calculated and simulated with finite element method and MATLAB software with PDE Toolbox. The results show that this method can accurately calculate the temperature distribution of the laser remanufacturing process. The simulation results are helpful to optimize process parameters and to improve the quality of laser remanufacturing.

Analyzing the operation of shallow buried insulating water supply pipe and temperature field around the soil changes over time. Results show that this kind of shallow buried and thermal insulation layer of the water supply pipe run three months, the temperature of the outer wall of the insulation layer is 3 ℃ and it can basically solve frost heave phenomena of water supply pipe running in winter.

Abstract:
This paper is on the prediction of stress limits and strain distributions of an automobile tire sidewall developed from Natural Rubber (NR)/Tea Seed Oil (TSO) modified kaolin composites. The stress-strain data report of NR/TSO modified kaolin at filler loading of 10phr was used to establish parameters characterizing the elastic behavior of the rubber vulcanizates. The tire model investigated was developed from MATLAB PDE Toolbox. The study was developed on maximum inflation pressure of 0.220632 MPa. The 2D Finite Element (FE) model computations for static loading of the tire sidewall gave a reasonable prediction of the stress limits and strain distributions, as the shear stresses obtained were within the range of −10 MPa to 10 MPa. The strain energy distributions were found to be within the range of −1500 J·m−3 to 1500 J·m−3. The stress limits for the first principal stress with respect to their magnitudes and orientations was obtained as 10 MPa for tensile stress and −20 MPa for compressive stress respectively while the stress limits for the second principal stress was obtained as 20 MPa for tensile stress and −10 MPa for compressive stress. The plane stress analysis with MATLAB PDE Toolbox gave stress limits distribution in terms of von-Mises stresses in the range 5 MPa - 25 MPa. The results indicate that NR/TSO modified kaolin composites can be employed in automobile tire sidewall applications. Abstract:
<p>In this thesis, I develop a new suite of tools to address two questions in exoplanet science: how common are Earth-mass planets in the habitable zones of Solar-type stars, and can we detect signs of life on other worlds?</p> <p>Answering the first question requires a method for detecting Earth-Sun analogs. Currently, the radial velocity (RV) method of exoplanet detection is one of the most successful tools for probing inner planetary systems. However, degeneracy between a spectrometer's wavelength calibration and the astrophysical RV shift has limited the sensitivity of today's instruments. In my thesis, I address a method for breaking this degeneracy: by combining a traditional spectrometer design with a dynamic interferometer, a fringe pattern is generated at the image plane that is highly sensitive to changes in the radial velocity of the target star. I augmented previous theoretical studies of the method, creating an end-to-end simulation to 1) introduce and recover wavelength calibration errors, and 2) investigate the effects of interferometer position errors on the RV precision. My simulation showed that using this kind of interferometric system, a 5-m class telescope could detect an Earth-Sun analog.</p> <p>Addressing the occurrence rate of Earth twins also requires an understanding of planet formation in multiple star systems, which encompass half of all Solar-type stars. Gravitational interactions between binary components separated by 10-100 astronomical units are predicted to truncate the outer edges of their respective disks, possibly reducing the disks' lifetimes. Consequently, the pool of material and the amount of time available for planet formation may be smaller than in single star systems. The stars' rotational periods provide a fossil record of these events: star-disk magnetic interactions initially prevent a contracting pre-main sequence star from spinning up, and hence a star with a shorter-lived disk is expected to be spinning more quickly when it reaches the zero age main sequence. In order to conduct a large-scale multiplicity survey to investigate the relationship between stellar rotation and binary system properties (e.g. their separations and mass ratios), I contributed to the commissioning of Robo-AO, a robotic laser guide star adaptive optics system, at the Kitt Peak 2.1-m. After the instrument's installation, I wrote a data pipeline to optimize the system's sensitivity to close stellar companions via reference star differential imaging. I then characterized Robo-AO's performance during its first year of operations. Finally, I used Robo-AO to search for binaries among the 759 stars in the Pleiades with rotational periods measured using the photometric data of the re-purposed Kepler telescope, K2.</p> <p>Detecting signs of life on other worlds will require detailed characterization of rocky exoplanet atmospheres. Polarimetry has long been proposed as a means of probing these atmospheres, but current instruments lack the sensitivity to detect the starlight reflected and polarized by such small, close-in planets. However, the latest generation of high contrast imaging instruments (e.g. GPI and SPHERE) may be able to detect the polarization of thermal emission by young gas giants due to scattering by aerosols in their atmospheres. Observational constraints on the details of clouds physics imposed by polarized emission will improve our understanding of the planets' compositions, and hence their formation histories. For the case of the brown dwarf HD19467 B orbiting a nearby Sun-like star, I demonstrated that the Gemini Planet Imager can detect linear polarizations on the order predicted for these cloudy exoplanets. My current pilot programs can produce the first detections of polarized exoplanet emission, while also building expertise for reflected starlight polarimetry with future observatories.</p>

The Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) indicates that meeting the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting the global temperature rise from pre-industrial levels to between 1.5 and 2 degrees Celsius requires reaching net-zero emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) between 2050 and 2070, as well as deep reductions in the emissions of other greenhouse gases by around mid-century (GHGs) (IPCC, 2018). At the same time countries need to build resilience to face the changes that cannot be avoided. NDC Invest was created as the one-stop-shop of the IDB Group providing technical and financial support for countries in Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) in their efforts to achieve the climate objectives under the Paris Agreement, seeking to transition to a net zero, resilient and sustainable development pathways that improve quality of life and prosperity in LAC. Through our research and experience supporting countries and piloting solutions we have developed a toolbox for support. This paper describes three NDC Invest products to support Governments to tackle challenges and scale up action towards a climate aligned and sustainable development path: i) the design of Long-Term Strategies (LTS) for net-zero emissions and resilience; ii) design of ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), aligned to LTS; and iii) design of investment plans and finance strategies. Our three products are not a fix recipe, but rather a toolbox to provide flexible and relevant solutions tailored to country needs and context, and different stages of design and implementation of their climate targets.

The role of social media in politics has increased considerably. A particular challenge is how to deal with the deluge of information generated on social media: it is impractical to read lots of messages with the hope of finding useful information. In this chapter, the authors suggest an alternative approach: utilizing analysis software to extract the most relevant information of the discussions taking place. This chapter discusses the WeGov Toolbox as one concept for policy-makers to deal with the information overload on Social Media, and how it may be applied. Two complementary, in depth case studies were carried out to validate the usefulness of the analysis results of the WeGov Toolbox components' within its target audience's everyday life. Firstly, the authors used the “HeadsUp” forum, operated by the Hansard Society. Here, they were able to compare the key themes and opinions extracted automatically by the Toolbox to a control group of manually pre-analyzed data sets. In parallel, results of analyses based on four weeks' intensive monitoring on policy area-specific Facebook pages selected by German policy makers, as well as topics on Twitter globally and local, were assessed by taking into account their existing experience with content discussed and user behavior in their respective public spheres. The cases show that there are interesting applications for policy-makers to use the Toolbox in combination with online forums (blogs) and social networks, if behavioral user patterns will be considered and the framework will be refined.

Abstract In this paper, we present a novel concept of using Matlab’s Partial Differential Equation (PDE) Toolbox to achieve shape and topology optimization during the automatic mechanical design process. In our institute, we are developing a toolbox called Solid Geometry (SG) Library in Matlab to achieve automatic design of medical robots and mechanisms. The entire design process is performed in one developing environment without additional data input and output. And those robots and mechanisms can be quickly manufactured by different kinds of 3D printers. Recently, we have also integrated the shape and topology optimization techniques into our automatic design process by using the PDE Toolbox of Matlab for finite element analysis because of its high efficiency and compactness. For optimization algorithms, we have already implemented two bionic structural optimization methods called Computer Aided Optimization (CAO) and Soft Kill Option (SKO) to optimize the stress distribution in the structure. Since the complicated material layout in the optimization results can be easily realized by the 3D printing technology, the mechanical performance of our medical robots and mechanisms can be greatly improved with the work presented in this paper.

Abstract:
Wind turbine is one of the important devices to extract clean energy from the wind flow. The efficiency of wind turbines must be examined under various working conditions in order to estimate the off-design performance. Numerous aerodynamic and structural research works have been carried out to compute the aeroelastic effects on wind turbines. Most of those suffer from either simplicity of the modeling approach or from the difficulty of the computing technique which limit the practical applicability of the results. In this research, a robust approach is proposed to compute the aeroelastic behavior of a horizontal axis wind turbine for the preliminary design purposes. The simplicity and applicability of the taken approach are the significant points of the research work. Aerodynamic and elastic computations are done using XFOIL and MATLAB PDE toolbox respectively. Those software are linked through an algorithm to compute aeroelastic effects interactively. A real measured time history of wind velocity is used as an input flow condition to simulate a real of angle of attack for the aeroelastic computation. Investigation of numerical output shows lift and drag coefficient values are lower compared to corresponding values of the rigid profile. Also the study of modulus of elasticity value on the separation point location is conducted and the delayed stall is observed by decreasing the airfoil rigidity.

Abstract:
The effect of bow flare angle on greenwater overtopping is numerically investigated using CFD with a VOF surface capturing scheme. A two dimensional fixed rectangular box with a flare angle is adopted to represent a Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading Unit (FPSO) with flare. Deep water conditions are assumed. The incident waves are focused wave groups based on the New Wave formulation, which represents the most probable free surface elevation around a large crest and includes much of the spectral properties of the underlying random sea state. Bow flare angles of 10, 30 and 50 degrees are analysed, which cover the typical range of a FPSO unit. For the box model, the length L, draft D and freeboard f are modelled as L/D = 15 and f/D = 0.25, which are typical dimensions for a FPSO. A range of wave steepness and relative length are considered, which lead to a variety of overtopping conditions including the hammer fist (HF), plunging plus dam break (PDB) and dam break (DB) greenwater events observed for vessels with no bow flare angle. The numerical simulations are performed using the open source CFD toolbox OpenFOAM of version 2.4.0 together with a fully nonlinear wave generation and absorption utility waves2Foam. The effect of the bow flare angle is quantified by analyzing changes in freeboard exceedance, overtopping volume and horizontal momentum flux of water on deck flow for different bow flare angles. The results indicate that, for the special case in which the vessel is fixed, the bow flare angle can significantly reduce each of these quantities. It is also shown that trends in the overtopping volume and momentum flux can be explained reasonably well using the modified dam break model proposed by Zhang et al. [14].

Abstract:
As stormwater regulations for hydrologic and water quality control become increasingly stringent, Department of Defense (DoD) facilities are faced with the daunting task of complying with multiple laws and regulations. This often requires facilities to plan, design, and implement structural best management practices (BMPs) to capture, filter, and/or infiltrate runoff—requirements that can be complicated, contradictory, and difficult to plan. This project demonstrated the Stormwater Management Optimization Toolbox (SMOT), a spreadsheet-based tool that effectively analyzes and plans for compliance to the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007 pre-hydrologic conditions through BMP implementation, resulting in potential cost savings by reducing BMP sizes while simultaneously achieving compliance with multiple objectives. SMOT identifies the most cost-effective modeling method based on an installation’s local conditions (soils, rainfall patterns, drainage network, and regulatory requirements). The work first demonstrated that the Model Selection Tool (MST) recommendation accurately results in the minimum BMP cost for 45 facilities of widely varying climatic and regional conditions, and then demonstrated SMOT at two facilities.
