In April 1987, in a back-street bar in Cardiff, the rebel regime at Radio Wales were plotting a coup. Their secret weapon was a daily magazine programme of music and current affairs called Streetlife. The would-be front-men, Ray Gravell (British Lions centre) and Frank Hennessy (Cardiff-Irish folk singer) had just persuaded the Editor that it needed an ‘agony uncle'… when I walked in.

Abstract:
Trainspotting, the “best British film of the decade”, arrived on 23 February 1996. Such were the expectations of the film (1996) that the face of its narrator-hero Renton (Ewan McGregor) appeared that month on the front cover of two influential London-based film magazines, Premiere and Sight and Sound. One year after its release, the film stands as both a critical and commercial success. The total Box Office receipts for Ireland, at IR £800 000 in the first 3 months, were comparable to a major Hollywood blockbuster. The film was still being screened 10 months later in Dublin's north inner city, the heartland of Dublin's heroin epidemic. Given its subject-matter, it is important to examine both the film itself, and its points of contact with the realities of drug addiction. In this respect, three questions suggest themselves: is the film showing anything new (representation), is it doing anything new (technique), and what is the film saying (ideology)?

Eastwood, M. R. "Who owns the brain?" Psychiatric Bulletin 14, no. 6 (June 1990): 353–55. http://dx.doi.org/10.1192/pb.14.6.353.

Abstract:
As usual, I bought my wife Vogue magazine for Christmas. It always serves well as, in North America parlance, a ‘stocking stuffer’. This year it had further value as it highlighted the brain. A well-known psychiatrist, Nancy Andreasen, set out to inform America about modern psychiatry (Andreasen, 1990). The article is entitled ‘Brave New Brain’ with the subtitle being ‘Modern Psychiatry has Left the Couch for the Laboratory’. She takes the reader through neuro-imaging, molecular genetics and psycho-pharmacology. It is an elegant synopsis and worthy of someone who had a doctorate in English before she took up medicine. Importantly, however, she prefaced her serious material with a mock-comic story about a conversation she had had with someone at a New York hospital recently. She was phoning about the retrieval of a brain for research and the ingenuous person at the hospital just could not put the idea of psychiatry and brains together. Another sad tale of psychiatric breast-beating? Those of us who trained in psychiatry in Britain a generation ago might give a wry smile. After all, biological psychiatry was all that we ever knew. When I entered the Maudsley in 1964, part of the orientation for registrars consisted of going to the laboratories. A mouse was popped into a jar containing liquid nitrogen, it went rock hard and the group was advised that freezing the neurotransmitters in that way was the royal road to solving problems.

Abstract:
This paper examines the use and meaning of the body-part terms or quasi-body part terms associated with Japanese emotions. The terms analyzed are kokoro, mune, hara, ki, and mushi. In Japanese kokoro is regarded as the seat of emotions. Mune (roughly, ‘chest’) is the place where Japanese believe kokoro is located. Hara (roughly, ‘belly’) can be used to refer to the seat of ‘thinking’, for example in expression of anger-like feelings which entail a prior cognitive appraisal. The term ki (roughly, ‘breath’) is also used for expressions dealing with emotions, temperament, and behaviour; among these, ki is mostly frequently used for referring to mental activity. Mushi — literally, a ‘worm’ which exists in the hara ‘belly’ — is also used for referring to specific emotion expressions. The tool for semantic analysis employed in this paper is the “Natural Semantic Metalanguage” method developed by Anna Wierzbicka and colleagues. This metalanguage enables us to explicate concepts by means of simple words and grammar (easily translated across languages), and clarifies the similarities and dissimilarities between the components involved in semantically similar terms. The data used for analysis are from various sources; published literature both in Japanese and English, newspaper/magazine articles, film scripts, comic books, advertisements, dictionaries, and popular songs.

Abstract:
The subject of this diploma thesis is the design of a conveyor superstructure of a collaborative mobile robot MiR. The first part is a theoretical research basis focused on mobile collaborative technologies and information related to Mobile industrial Robots. The following is a practical part built on previous acquired knowledge. The key issue of the solution is the logistics transport of the PCB magazine in the field of SMT industry. There are created two structural design variants of the superstructure arrangement for the transport of two binders and the most suitable variant is selected on the basis of the multicriteria basic method. The selected alternative of the conveyor top module is then subjected to design calculations. In order to obtain a comprehensive overview of the prototype production, the following section contains drawing documentation, including relevant comments, an economic cost estimate and a risk analysis.

Abstract:
Realidad was a cultural and political magazine of the Spanish Communist Party (PCE) which, to escape Franco’s censorship, was published abroad, under the aegis of brother parties: from 1963 to 1967 in Rome, at the Gramsci Institute, and after that in Paris until 1973. The direction at first was entrusted to the Federico Sánchez [Jorge Semprún], a militant and writer, who was soon replaced by a more orthodox party member, Manuel Azcárate. Although the magazine leaned into prolixity and initiatory language, it also offered significant articles on art and literature, written by famous intellectuals in exile, and followed with the participation of students’ and workers’ linked to the opposition movements in Spain.

Abstract:
Alongside the legal framework which regulates the media’s activities, a system of regulation operates to uphold standards of journalism and programme-making and to provide at least a partial remedy for those whose privacy has been invaded by the media. Different bodies currently regulate different branches of the media. Ofcom (the Office of Communications) regulates the content of all television and radio programmes in the United Kingdom except that the BBC retains sole jurisdiction in relation to certain matters broadcast on BBC channels funded by the licence fee. The Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) has recently taken over as principal regulator of the newspaper and magazine industry (although a new body, the Independent Monitor for the Press (Impress), has also recently been formed). IPSO replaced the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) in September 2014, with which has now ceased to exist, having regulated the print media industry since 1991. These bodies adjudicate upon complaints with reference to codes of practice which media falling within their regulatory remit are required to comply. The Ofcom Broadcasting Code, drawn up and regularly reviewed and revised by Ofcom, is the primary broadcasting code relating to the broadcast of television and radio programme content in the United Kingdom.

In ASME 2003 9th International Conference on Radioactive Waste Management and Environmental Remediation. ASMEDC, 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icem2003-4804.

Full text
Abstract:
Between 1959 and 1967, Plutonium Contaminated Material (PCM) was stored in the magazines at the Low Level Waste Facility at Drigg. However, PCM is now classified as Intermediate Level Waste — rather than Low Level Waste — and so a programme to remove the PCM is underway. In support of this programme a suite of safety related non-destructive assay instrumentation has been supplied to the Drigg Site in order to characterise the PCM prior to transportation. Three identical assay systems employing High Resolution Gamma Spectrometry (HRGS) and Passive Neutron Coincidence Counting (PNCC) have been installed in the new waste retrieval facilities on three of the PCM magazines. These Retrieval Module Monitors allow the fissile content and radionuclide inventory of individual items of PCM to be determined before they are placed with other items into 200 litre drums and transported across the Drigg site to a temporary drum storage facility. In addition, two assay systems of a different design have also been installed in a new PCM Drum export facility. The purpose of these Drum Monitors is to determine the fissile content and radionuclide inventory of drums of PCM that have been retrieved from the magazines before they are transported to Sellafield. Like the Retrieval Module Monitors, the Drum Monitors also uses the HRGS and PNCC techniques to measure drums of up to 400 litre capacity but in this case a scanning detector is used instead of three fixed gamma detectors. This paper describes the characteristics of both the Retrieval and Drum Monitors, the particular requirements for these systems and the means by which they were designed, built and tested in order to ensure that they delivered their primary safety function, which was to not underestimate the fissile content of the items of PCM they measure.
