Abstract:
Agricultural projects and programmes funded by governments and donor agencies often failed to achieve the desired set objective(s) at the system levels. The study tries to assess the existing production practices with a view of coming up with a consensus farmer need in a crop-livestock production system at Ido Local Government Area (LGA). The study used a three-stage-sampling technique to elicit information from 225 respondents. Ido Local Government Area was purposively selected for the study. Three cells were randomly selected for the research, three villages were randomly selected in each cell and twenty-five farmers were selected using the snowball selection technique. The data obtained from the Participatory Rural Appraisal were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The pairwise ranking tool helped in determining the importance of the identified problems from the FGD in the study area. The researcher identified the following problems (Pb) from the focus group discussion; inadequate capital for livestock production (Pb1), poor housing for livestock (Pb2), inadequate nutrition for livestock (Pb3), diseases of crops (Pb4), livestock and predatory attack on crops (Pb5). The pairwise comparison of percentage of Pb1 versus (vs) Pb2 was 80/20%, Pb1 vs Pb3 was 68/32%, Pb1 vs Pb4 was 80/20%, Pb1 vs Pb5 was 12/88%, Pb2 vs Pb3 was 68/32%, Pb2 vs Pb4 was 20/80%, Pb2 vs Pb5 was 20/80%, Pb3 vs Pb4 was 32/68%, Pb3 vs Pb5 was 20/80%, vs Pb4 vs Pb5 was 20/80% respectively. The ultimate farmers’ problem in crop-livestock production systems (CLPS) that needs immediate intervention and technical assistance was inadequate capital as perceived from the responses of the farmers.

Abstract:
Government and non-government organizations (NGOs) interventions to local farmers in the recent past had not yielded the desired result because these interventions were not tailored towards the needs of farmers. However, most information on the needs of target farmers have been very scanty thus, the need to use a bottom top approach to assess farmers' needs in Ibarapa East, Oyo state. A three-stage sampling technique was used to purposively select about 225 respondents. Parameters measured were household characteristics, farm sizes, farm labor availability, seasonal pattern and need to be assessed using a participatory rural appraisal approach comprising of focus group discussion (FGD) and structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed descriptively and the need assessed using the pair-wise ranking and simple matrix. Of challenges listed in FDG among crop-livestock farmers, only five (5) were prioritized as follows; wastage of agricultural products (Pb1), bad road network (Pb2), high cost of agricultural inputs (Pb3), lack of potable water (Pb4) and animal invasion (Pb5). The pairwise comparison of the percentage of Pb1 versus (vs.) Pb2 was 80/20%, Pb1 vs. Pb3 was 90/10%, Pb1 vs. Pb4 was 70/30%, Pb1 vs. Pb5 was 20/80%, Pb2 vs. Pb3 was 70/30%, Pb2 vs Pb4 was 30/70%, Pb2 vs. Pb5 was 10/90%, Pb3 vs. Pb4 was 20/80%, Pb3 vs. Pb5 was 10/90%, vs. Pb4 vs Pb5 was 30/70%, respectively. There were proffered solutions to the problem(s) itemized by the FGD. The animal invasion was ranked highest as farmers' need assessed for possible intervention in Ibarapa East. Governments and NGO funds should be addressing animal invasion for desirable project impact assessment.

Abstract:
Procyanidin (PC) dimers are powerful antioxidants, abundant in plant tissues, and also bioavailable. However, the role of the molecular structure of PCs on their antioxidant properties is still a controversial and not fully understood issue that needs to be addressed in a more specific way. The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of the constituent units, type of interflavan bond, and conformation on the antioxidant properties of PC dimers including PB3, PB4, PB5, PB6, PB7, and PB8, using the density functional theory (DFT) computational method. The analysis was performed in function of parameters that allow determining the ability of the molecules to transfer or to capture electrons, among which the chemical potential, bond dissociation enthalpy (BDE), gap energy, Fukui indices, and charge distribution of HOMO-LUMO orbitals. The factors that showed the most notable effects on the antioxidant properties of the PC dimers were the type of interflavan bond and the conformation. The antioxidant ability of the dimers PB3 and PB4 containing the interflavan bond C4–C8, in their Compact conformation, was very similar to each other but greater than those of dimers PB5, PB6, PB7, and PB8 containing the C4–C6 interflavan bond. PB8 showed the lowest antioxidant ability.

Abstract:
Doped films of TiO2/PbS/CdS have been prepared by successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method. Bi- and Ag-doped-PbS quantum dot (QD) were produced by admixing Bi3+or Ag+during deposition and the existing forms of the doping element in PbS QD were analyzed. The results show that Bi3+entered the cube space of PbS as donor yielding interstitial doping Bi-doped-PbS QD, while Ag+replaced Pb2+of PbS as acceptor yielding substitutional doping Ag-doped-PbS QD. The novel Bi-doped-PbS/CdS and Ag-doped-PbS/CdS quantum dot cosensitized solar cell (QDCSC) were fabricated and power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 2.4% and 2.2% was achieved, respectively, under full sun illumination.

Abstract:
Objectives: African Americans (AAs) have higher rates of medication nonadherence compared to non-Hispanic whites. In this study, we determined the preliminary feasibility of an 8-week intervention focused on improving culturally-informed illness and medication beliefs, self-efficacy, and medication adherence. Methods: We used purposeful sampling to recruit 8 peer ambassadors (PAs), individuals constituting the advisory board of AAs adherent to their medicines, and 7 peer buddies (PBs), assessed as non-adherent to their diabetes medicines. PAs and PBs were paired. They completed 2 group educational sessions together and one follow-up phone call to PBs by PAs. Results: PAs were mostly female (N = 5, 63%), mean age of 55 years (± 8.3). Similarly, PBs were mostly female (N = 6, 86%), mean age of 56 years (± 6.3). Follow-up interviews with PBs revealed that they liked discussing medication management strategies and diabetes management resources, sharing their diabetes experiences with their PA and connecting with them over the phone. All PBs reported a positive, trusting relationship between them and their PAs. Conclusions: This study demonstrates AAs with diabetes medication adherence challenges are receptive to a peer support mechanism to address culturally informed beliefs and enhance patient-provider communication and self-efficacy.

Abstract:
Crystalline/crystalline blends of polymer have shown advantages in the preparation of new polymeric materials. However, the regulation of co-crystallization in a blend is still full of challenges due to the preferential self-crystallization driven by thermodynamics. Here, an inclusion complex approach is proposed to facilitate the co-crystallization between crystalline polymers, because the crystallization process displays a prominent kinetics advantage when polymer chains are released from the inclusion complex. Poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), poly(butylene adipate) (PBA) and urea are chosen to form co-inclusion complexes, where PBS and PBA chains play as isolated guest molecules and urea molecules construct the host channel framework. The coalesced PBS/PBA blends are obtained by fast removing the urea framework and systematically investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, proton nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transformation infrared spectrometry. It is demonstrated that PBA chains are co-crystallized into PBS extended-chain crystals in the coalesced blends, while such a phenomenon has not been detected in simply co-solution-blended samples. Though PBA chains could not be totally accommodated in the PBS extended-chain crystals, their co-crystallized content increases with the initial feeding ratio of PBA. Consequently, the melting point of the PBS extended-chain crystal gradually declines from 134.3 °C to 124.2 °C with an increasing PBA content. The PBA chains playing as defects mainly induce lattice expansion along the a-axis. In addition, when the co-crystals are soaked in tetrahydrofuran, some of the PBA chains are extracted out, leading to damage to the correlative PBS extended-chain crystals. This study shows that co-inclusion complexation with small molecules could be an effective way to promote co-crystallization behavior in polymer blends.

Abstract:
Single-phase limited cubic solid solutions Pb1-xAgxS based on PbS with a metal sublattice alloyed with silver are obtained. The maximum relative content of silver in solid solutions Pb1-xAgxS reaches x = 0.15. For the first time the thermal expansion of semiconductor solid solutions Pb1-xAgxS was measured by dilatometry method in the temperature range 295-580 K. Substitution of lead atoms by silver atoms in Pb1-xAgxS leads to a decrease in the coefficient of thermal expansion associated with a change in the anharmonicity of atomic vibrations and a weak increase in the elastic properties. For single-crystal particles PbS and solid solutions Pb1-xAgxS, spatial distributions of the elastic modulus E, Poisson's ratio , and linear compressibility  as a function of the direction (hkl) are found. The reflection spectra of the synthesized powders PbS, Ag2S and Pb1-xAgxS are measured and it is shown that the replacement of lead with silver in PbS is accompanied by an increase in the width of the band gap.

Abstract:
This work studied the morphological, mechanical, and thermal properties of poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/polybutylene succinate (PBS)/ethylene-co-methyl acrylate-co-glycidyl methacrylate (EMA-GMA) ternary blends. The polymer blends were prepared in an internal mixer and then molded into films by compression molding. The results showed that the PLA/PBS blends had immiscible morphology in which the PBS phase was dispersed in PLA matrix as spherical shape. The PBS droplet size increased with increasing PBS content. The fractured surface of PLA/PBS/EMA-GMA blends displayed more small crack of plastic deformations than that of PLA/PBS blends and the fracture behavior of PLA/PBA blends was changed to more ductile fracture when added with EMA-GMA. The addition of EMA-GMA in polymer blends improved the compatibility of two phases. The results of the mechanical properties showed that PBS and EMA-GMA addition improved the strain at break of PLA/PBS and PLA/PBS/EMA-GMA blends, respectively. The incorporation of EMA-GMA had no effect on the melting temperature and degradation temperature of PLA blends. The PLA/PBS/EMA-GMA blends had lower percent crystallinity than that of PLA/PBS blends and most of percent crystallinity decreased with increasing EMA-GMA loading due to its more amorphous structure than PLA and PBS.

Abstract:
Nanocrystal quantum dots (NQDs) show great promise in the advancement of the field of photovoltaics. While the maximum efficiency of conventional solar cell (SC) devices is limited to ∼ 31% (Shockley-Queisser limit), devices based on NQDs may attain a maximal thermodynamic efficiency of 42% through the exploitation of multiple exciton generation (MEG). In this process, several electron- hole pairs are created by the absorption of a single high energy photon, as opposed to the single excitons created in conventional solar cell devices. IV-VI semiconductor nanocrystals (PbS, PbSe) are of particular interest as candidates for the exploitation of MEG due to the narrow band gap, high confinement energies, and long radiative carrier lifetimes observed in these systems. In order to realise the full potential of MEG devices, full characterisation of the optoelectronic properties of the underlying nanoparticles is desirable. While the size-dependent properties of NQDs are well understood, the effects of NQD shape are less so. This thesis investigates the effect of ellipticity on the optoelectronic properties associated with spheroidal NQDs. To this end, a four-band, anisotropic, and radially variant k · p system Hamiltonian is expanded in a planewave basis in order to calculate single-particle eigenenergies and eigenfunctions of colloidal PbSe/PbS core/shell heterogeneous NQDs of varying ellipticity. Many-body effects are accounted for via a full configuration interaction (CI) Hamiltonian, the basis of which is comprised of the single-particle states. Exci- tonic and bi-excitonic corrections are then found by mixing of the basis states. In this manner, such diverse electronic and optical properties as quasi-particle binding energies, momentum matrix elements, and charge carrier lifetimes, both radiative and non-radiative, may be predicted.

Abstract:
Elle révèle qu'après 6 cycles d'extrusion, la dégradation thermo-mécanique du PHBV est significativement réduite en présence du PBS<br>The main objective of this work was to study the structure-properties relationships of biopolymerblends based on poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) and polybutylene succinate (PBS). The work was devised into three parts. The first part was devoted to the study of the properties of PHBV/PBS blends prepared by melt compounding at different weight ratio in terms of morphology and properties. The results obtained were discussed in terms of properties and compared with the neat polymers. The second part was devoted to the study of compatibility of PHBV/PBS blends aiming to improve the interactions at the interface between the two components. The effects of both sepiolite (5% wt.) and PHBV-g-MA (5% wt.) were studied in terms of properties. The results showed a synergistic effect between the compatibilizer PHBV-g-MA and the nanofiller sepiolite though an increase in thermal, mechanical and rheological properties. The last part dealing with the recyclability of PHBV/PBS through the study of the effects of repeated extrusion cycles on the properties of materials. The results showed that after 6 reprocessing cycles the thermo-mechanical degradation of PHBV is significantly reduced in the presence of PBS

Abstract:
Abstract The kinetics of sulphides forming species such as Zn2+, Pb2+ and Fe2+ encountered in geothermal energy systems has the potential to influence the overall corrosion behaviour; uniform and pitting, of carbon steel used in technical equipment. This project investigates the effect of the Zn2+, Pb2+ and Fe2+ within the bulk brine chemistry, on the evolution and surface deposition of sulphide scales; ZnS, PbS and/or FeS at 80°C. The effect of surface deposition of sulphide scales on corrosion product formation, and the corrosion behaviour of carbon steel was investigated over 48 hours. In-situ electrochemical techniques such as LPR was combined with SEM-EDX, and XRD techniques to characterise the electrochemical responses, the composition and morphology of sulphide scales and corrosion product respectively. The extent of pitting corrosion damage on the metal surface was also investigated using white light interferometry. The results shows that bulk precipitation of ZnS &amp; PbS and its subsequent surface deposition directly lowers the bulk pH of the corrosion environment. This was observed to have a direct impact on the overall corrosion characteristics of the corroding interface of carbon steel; this includes effect on FeS morphology, formation kinetics and uniform and pitting corrosion characteristics.

Abstract:
Abstract Metal sulfide mineral scaling, fouling and deposition are frequently encountered problems in geothermal systems. Their formation, crystallization and deposition occur principally because of their extremely low solubility, based on the low solubility product (Ksp). Among the metal sulfides that cause problematic issues, the most common ones are iron sulfide (FeS), zinc sulfide (ZnS), lead sulfide (PbS), and, less frequently, antimony sulfide(s) (Sb2S3 and Sb2S5). Zinc sulfide, for example, has a K of -sp 2·10 25 mol²/L², whereas for PbS, it is 1·10-28 mol²/L² (~three orders of magnitude less soluble). ZnS can precipitate either as Sphalerite or Zinc Blende, and PbS commonly crystallizes as Galena. Mitigation of such ZnS and PbS precipitates and deposits can be achieved by chemical interventions, by the addition of organic chemical additives to the water. Herein, we report the inhibitory effects of phosphonate-based chemical additives for ZnS and PbS scales. These additives can inhibit formation of sulfide scale, and, significantly, prevent its deposition on metal surfaces. The efficiency of these additives is dosage-dependent, and relatively high inhibitor concentrations are needed for their inhibitory activity to take place. Possible mechanisms will be discussed focusing on inhibition and dispersion.

Abstract:
Abstract Deposition of inorganic mineral scale on downhole completion equipment contributes to significant downtime and loss of production within the oil and gas industry. High temperature/high pressure (HT/HP) fields have reported build-up of lead sulfide (PbS) scale as a consequence of reservoir souring; and the resultant reaction between dissociated sulfide anions from hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and heavy metal cations. In this work, laboratory apparatus enabled simulation of scale precipitation under turbulent emulsion-forming multiphase conditions, with behavior of PbS particles at the oil/water interface and subsequent adhesion onto anti-fouling surfaces measured at a range of polymer concentrations. Introduction of polymer sulfide inhibitor (PSI) product to the formation brine at concentrations of 500mg/L reduced overall PbS deposition whilst addition of 5000mg/L further reduced scale crystallisation but resulted in complete emulsification of the light oil phase. The tendency of soluble polymers to act as surfactants led to increased stabilisation of the formed oil in water (o/w) emulsion with heightened PSI concentration. Optical microscope, gravimetric and rheological measurements explained depositional behaviour; whereby enhanced o/w emulsion viscosity and stability due to amphiphilic polymer adsorption onto both PbS scale and oil droplet interfaces resulted in uniform deposition upon all surfaces.

Abstract:
Biopolymers have gained increased attention as viable alternatives to petroleum-based polymers, driven by growing awareness of sustainability and environmental impact. Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), a biopolymer derived from microorganisms, holds promise for biomedical applications due to its unique properties. However, its practical use has been hindered by certain limitations. In this study, we addressed these challenges by preparing blends of PHB with polylactic acid (PLA) and polybutylene succinate (PBS) using a twin-screw extruder. The thermal analysis revealed a reduction in the degree of crystallinity for PHB after blending, while its thermal transitions remained unaffected. The resulting immiscible blends exhibited partial compatibility, with dispersed phases of PLA and PBS uniformly distributed within the PHB matrix. Subsequently, we conducted a comprehensive examination of the mechanical properties of 3D-printed specimens. Our findings indicated a notable enhancement in the flexural modulus and flexural strength of the blends upon the addition of PLA and PBS.

Abstract:
Cannabis-related protective behavioral strategies (PBS) are behaviors used before, during, and/or after using cannabis to reduce its associated harms. Despite the effectiveness of PBS in reducing both cannabis use and negative cannabis-related consequences, few studies have examined whether there are sex and cultural differences in PBS use. In the present study, we compare PBS use across males and females and across five countries. We also examine whether the associations of PBS use with cannabis-related outcomes differ by sex and country. We recruited 1,175 college students (63.3% female; Mage = 20.96, SD = 3.95; 45.1% Freshman, 20.2% Sophomore, 16.6% Junior, 9.7% Senior, 8.4% other) who reported past-month cannabis use from eight universities in five countries (U.S., Spain, Argentina, Uruguay, and the Netherlands) to complete an online survey. The online survey included the Marijuana Use Grid (MUG; Pearson &amp; Marijuana Outcomes Study Team, 2020), Protective Behavioral Strategies for Marijuana scale (PBSM; Pedersen et al., 2016; revised by Pedersen et al., 2017), and Brief-Marijuana Consequences Questionnaire (B-MACQ; Simons et al., 2012). Results of a series of ANOVAs suggested differences across countries on the PBSM total score, F(4, 1,126) = 20.93, p &lt; .001, such that participants in the U.S. (M = 4.53, SD = 1.11) and Spain (M = 4.48, SD = 0.95) endorsed the most frequent PBS use and participants in the Netherlands (M = 3.46, SD = 1.49) endorsed the least frequent PBS use. There were many item-level differences in PBS use across countries with a pattern similar to that for the PBSM total score. Results of a series of independent sample t-tests suggested that females (M = 4.51, SD = 1.11) scored higher than males (M = 4.17, SD =1.09) on the PBSM total score, t(1,123) = -4.88, p &lt; .001, as well as nearly every item. The correlations between PBSM total score and cannabis-related outcomes across gender and countries were mostly in the expected direction: more frequent PBS use was associated with less cannabis use and fewer cannabis-related consequences. These correlations were largest for the U.S. sample. Interestingly, however, the correlation between the PBSM total score and B-MACQ was positive for the Argentina sample and every correlation between the PBSM total score and cannabis-related outcome was positive for the Netherlands sample. The results of the present study suggest there are several gender and cultural differences in the use of cannabis-related PBS. However, future studies are needed to replicate these findings, especially given the relatively small samples for some of the countries in the present study (our smallest sample size was for Uruguay [n = 46]). Gender and cultural differences in PBS use should be considered in developing and tailoring PBS interventions, especially because the PBSM was validated with a U.S. sample and most existing interventions were developed for use with U.S. participants.

Abstract:
To address plastic pollution from fossil fuel polymers, biodegradable alternatives like starch and polybutylene succinate (PBS) are proposed. However, starch is hydrophilic, while PBS and PBSA are hydrophobic. This research investigates the use of dicumyl peroxide (DCP) and tartaric acid (TA) as coupling agents in blends of thermoplastic starch (TPS) and PBS/PBSA, with glycerol as a plasticizer. Different weight/weight compositions of DCP and TA were added to blends in an internal mixer and subsequently compressed molded into films. DCP enhances tensile strength and ductility but increases torque and processing temperature. FTIR analysis show only a physical blend of components and no evidence of chemical interaction. TA reduces torque and tensile strength but increases ductility, with FTIR indicating that TA does not esterify starch but may form new bonds in the PBS carbonyl groups. SEM shows better compatibility in the blends.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The increasing prevalence of bio-based and biodegradable plastics as an alternative to traditional plastics derived from crude oil is a noteworthy trend. Polybutylene succinate (PBS), a plastic produced from succinic acid, is among the promising materials for the future. However, the production of bio-based succinic acid through biotechnical processes in controlled environments presents challenges. This process leads to increased costs and is currently not economically competitive compared to crude oil-based succinic acid production. In addition to succinic acid, levulinic acid is another monomer produced in the same process. A novel approach to the digestion of biomass has been developed to address the issue of biotechnological production of bio-based platform chemicals. This innovative process employs microwave radiation, pressure, and temperature to convert wood residues into succinic acid and levulinic acid. Various catalyst concentrations and biomass ratios were tested in a batch process, with high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC/MS) analyses revealing the formation of succinic acid, levulinic acid, formic acid, and 2-oxoglutaric acid. The results demonstrate that microwaves combined with a metal salt catalyst can be used to produce platform chemicals from lignocellulosic biomass. To further advance the continuous production of PBS, a twin-screw extruder was modified and adapted after the successful results obtained from the batch processes. This setup enables additional experiments to evaluate the transferability of batch process results to continuous reactions, facilitating the scale-up and the economic viability of the overall PBS production process in the future.

Abstract:
Requirement of Babesia spp maintenance for experiments in various aspects is crucial. In this study, a thai strain of Babesia bovis was inoculated to splencetomized calves. During a high parasitaemia, they were bled for cryopreservaton and in vitro cultvation. Parasitized erythrocytes have been cryopreserved for future use by mixing with 3 cryoprotectants and freezing at -70℃ in liquid ntrogen. The cryoprotectants are glyccrolyte (electrolyte-based balanced), sorbitol-based and glycerol in phosphate buffered soluton (PBS). After cryopreservation for 6 weeks, viability of the parasited were assessed by morphologically observatons of Giemsa stained smears. The results revealed that glycerol-PBS cryopreserved blood were recovered unsuccessfully in bovine erythrocytes and free exoerythrocytic babesial parasites. Glycerolyte and sorbitol-based cryoprotectants gave satsfactory results. Besides, glycerolyte provided a better cryopreserved property than sorbitol-based for exoerythrocytic Babesia. The babesial parasitized erythrocytes were also maintained and propagated in in vitro cultivation for a short term. However, unsatisfactory results has been shown in both under the conditions of 85-90% humidity, 37℃ and 5% CO₂ or 2%O₂, 5%CO₂ and 93%N₂ Attempts to develop a propered culture technique should be considered.
