Recent scholarship on the late medieval Pays de Vaud has allowed for a better understanding of the Reformation (1536) in this region, revealing it as a period marked not only by ruptures but also by significant adaptations and continuities. This article employs a trans-periodic approach to explore the material culture of the Eucharist, tracing its developments across the late medieval and Reformation periods. Key findings include the transition from stone altars to wooden communion tables, the contested continuity in the substance and shape of chalices, and the gradual shift from unleavened hosts to plain bread. These changes highlight a complex interplay of theological and practical concerns. The study provides a nuanced perspective on the Reformation in the Pays de Vaud, emphasizing the ongoing influence of medieval ecclesiastical reforms and the gradual nature of liturgical transformations. This analysis underscores the importance of material culture in understanding religious and cultural shifts during this pivotal period.

Active in the accumulation of facts concerning the environment, the canton of Vaud has available a forestry data bank which offers abundant information. The most important elements, such as geology, climate and vegetation (the phytosociological and dendrometrical bases), are described in this article. This data bank is available to the entire forestry service. The information comes from four biogeographical regions and the description of these makes it possible to impart a regional structure to the environmental references from forest management and development planning and thus facilitates deliberation and communication.

Abstract This article addresses the Huguenot connections of the English regicide Edmund Ludlow, who was forced into continental exile by the Restoration of the Stuart monarchy in England. For more than 30 years, Ludlow lived as a fugitive among Protestants in Geneva and in the Swiss Pays de Vaud where his local networks protected him against royalist assassins. Many of those who helped him were Huguenots who had stories of flight and exile in their own families.

Les sources laissées par les institutions médiévales vaudoises sont assez riches pour aborder dans ses aspects les plus divers l'histoire de la santé. Des etudes récentes traitent de la gestion du patrimoine viticole de l'hôpital de Vevey, des personnes qui y furent hospitalisées au début du XVe siècle, de la réaction des hôpitaux aux afflux massifs de pèlerins ou de victimes de catastrophes. La progression d’une épidémie — les pestes de 1348 et de 1360 — et son impact démographique ont pu être précisés, tandis qu'on dessinait un réseau des léproseries vaudoises. Enfin, I'attitude des bourgeois de Lausanne envers l'hopital se dégage des legs pieux — étudiés pour le XlVe siècle et, sous un tout autre angle, des pretentions politiques au contrôle de ces établissements.

Abstract. Les filtres de l'officialité de la migration, dans le pays d'origine comme dans celui d'aecueil. ne permettent pas de saisir et de comprendre la grande épaisseur de contenus cachés dans les parcours migratoires. Dans la présente contribution nous nous proposons d'analyser, à l'aide d'histoires de vie d'immigrés italiens résidant dans le canton de Vaud, la façon dont ces immigrés permettent à leur imaginaire de ressurgir ainsi que de révéler les références aux mythes de la « Terre- Mére», du voyage, de la recherche de la «Terre Promise », du retour, rattachés aux trajectoires migratoires qui nourrissent leur quotidien et leurs histoires.

Alors que d’autres cantons suisses ou d’autres pays ont déjà entamé un processus de réforme de leur système d’évaluation depuis plusieurs années, le canton de Vaud introduit des changements, notamment l’abandon des notes chiffrées et des moyennes, en août 1997. Cet élan novateur ne porte pas que sur ces points, il incite également à mettre en œuvre une évaluation formative en tant que processus intégré à l’enseignement, développant un regard plus critique sur la manière d’enseigner du maître et une évaluation informative favorisant la communication avec les familles. L’accent est mis sur la progression des apprentissages des élèves et la communication, plutôt que sur une mesure sommative des connaissances en termes de «juste ou faux» et de points accumulés.

Alors qu’il était précepteur en Suisse, le jeune Hegel traduisit minutieusement un libelle révolutionnaire dénonçant l’oppression que les autorités bernoises exerçaient sur le Pays de Vaud. Il publia ces Lettres de Jean-Jacques Cart à son retour en Allemagne, en 1798, sous le couvert d’un anonymat qu’il ne leva jamais. Derrière le caractère anecdotique de cette première publication, on peut déceler des enjeux qui conduisirent à l’instauration de l’idéalisme spéculatif. Le motif de la lutte pour la reconnaissance, en particulier, semble y trouver sa première apparition. Plus fondamentalement cette première publication éclaire le travail d’élaboration stylistique conduisant progressivement au système, avec, à l’horizon, la question de la portée pratique de la philosophie.

Abstract. This article shows how two Swiss posters represent a certain representation of the Swiss territory, appropriate to the messages they try to convey. The first one dates from 1942 and invites tourists to stay in the Pays-d'Enhaut (canton of Vaud). The second encourages the Swiss electorate to vote for the Vert'libéral political party in 2019. Through a qualitative approach, we show that the choice of representations, a set of miniatures and sketches, is not neutral. In the light of historical, tourism and political contexts of poster production, the paper decrypts an imagery of a Switzerland for urban dwellers, green for its nature, white for its inhabitants. In both cases, Switzerland is always an island that chooses its images.

Résumé Behar (Cem L.).-Le pasteur Jean-Louis Muret (1715-1796) L'œuvre démographique du pasteur suisse Jean-Louis Muret (1715-1796) constitue une contribution importante à l'« Arithmétique Politique». Sa solide étude de la population du pays de Vaud, publiée en 1766, place Muret au premier rang des «démographes» du XVIII siècle. Les innovations techniques y sont, en effet, assez nombreuses. Muret calcule la première table de mortalité féminine selon l'état matrimonial, avec double sortie pour les femmes célibataires. Il est, avec Struyck, le premier à avoir présenté une table de survie de la première année de la vie, divisée en mois, le premier mois étant subdivisé en semaines. Il est aussi le premier chercheur à avoir calculé des indices démographiques « standardisés » : décès, mariages et baptêmes annuels rapportés à une puissance de dix. Il est donc l'inventeur des taux bruts de natalité, de nuptialité et de mortalité.

Nous avons eu l’opportunité, durant un semestre dans la province du Québec, d’observer la manière dont les structures sport-études étaient organisées pour les élèves en âge du secondaire 1. Nous avons ainsi effectué, dans le cadre de notre mémoire, une étude comparative entre les structures sport-études du Québec et celles du Canton de Vaud. Le recueil de données s’est déroulé à travers la passation d’un questionnaire auprès d’élèves-athlètes âgés de 13 à 16 ans. Nous avons ainsi observé des différences en matière de satisfaction et de conciliation entre le sport et les études selon le pays. Les élèves-athlètes du la région québécoise obtenaient de meilleur résultat en matière de satisfaction sportive. En outre, leur score de conciliation entre le sport et les études était également meilleur que celle des élèves-athlètes vaudois. Ces différences varient également en fonction du sexe et du type de score pratiqué (individuel vs collectif). Ce travail permet de prendre conscience des différences entre les systèmes mais aussi de limites existantes au sein des deux contextes étudiés.

L’origine et l’évolution des noms de famille ont déjà intéressé la linguistique française (p. ex. Dauzat 1951). Les limites des archives et la spéculation abusive n’ont pas favorisé les travaux en onomastique et l’étude historique des noms héréditaires s’est peu à peu effacée du paysage scientifique. La révolution génomique des dernières décennies a toutefois produit des données et développé des outils qui ont fait de la patronymie un axe de recherche novateur : l’étroite analogie entre la transmission patrilinéaire du nom de famille et celle du chromosome Y a permis de revenir en force sur l’émergence médiévale et moderne des patronymes en Europe de l’Ouest. Cet article se penche sur une étude de cas qui chevauche le Pays de Vaud et la Franche-Comté. L’histoire conservait l’hypothèse d’un rapport entre les noms de famille Rochat/Rochet et Ferreux. Seul le recours à une méthodologie mixte combinant linguistique et génétique a pu apporter la preuve de « synonymie historique » de ces noms. L’étude proposée en fait la démonstration et pose plus largement la difficulté de l’interdisciplinarité, plus encore entre sciences séparées par des facultés aux antipodes.

Les performances de l’armée russe en Ukraine et en Syrie ont surpris beaucoup d’observateurs occidentaux. Elles traduisent une remontée en puissance significative depuis les conflits en Tchétchénie et en Géorgie. L’industrie d’armement russe se modernise et l’armée se professionnalise. Toutefois, la situation économique du pays oblige le pouvoir à faire des choix et à délaisser certaines capacités. La puissance militaire russe doit donc être relativisée.

L’Europe se prétend terre d’asile et d’accueil, mais elle reste de marbre devant les milliers de noyés en Méditerranée. La gauche européenne pense qu’il vaut mieux minimiser la question, pas de vagues. Pourtant, l’appel à la main d’œuvre immigrée devient à nouveau stratégique avec le développement de la « silver economy » (économie des têtes argentées, autrement dit, du soin), le « réarmement industriel, technologique et scientifique », le besoin de travailleurs agricoles saisonniers. Le pacte européen sur la migration et l’asile va à rebours : il s’agit d’empêcher les étrangers de fouler le sol des États membres par une « procédure à la frontière ». Les demandes d’asile seront désormais filtrées et examinées en amont des frontières européennes. En attendant, les migrants seront détenus dans un sas. Ce qui cimente les pays de l’Union, c’est le partage « équitable » du fardeau de la gestion de ces migrants, en passant des accords avec des pays prêts à gagner de l’argent pour ce gardiennage. S’agit-il de réarmer la colonialité ? Il faut rajouter une étoile noire au drapeau européen.

Les émotions sont partout. Elles structurent nos vies, depuis l’enfance, et nous apprenons petit à petit à les connaître et à les canaliser. La place qu’elles occupent varie selon la culture à laquelle nous appartenons, ce qui vaut pour le pays, l’époque, la classe sociale, le sexe et aussi le métier. Cet article va d’abord se pencher sur la manière dont les émotions sont des «faits sociaux» et font l’objet d’une socialisation. Une seconde partie traitera des émotions dans la sphère du travail, pensées et organisées selon des principes qui se veulent rationnels. Enfin, une dernière partie proposera une focale sur les métiers du social et de l’éducation, pour s’interroger sur la place que les émotions y occupent spécifiquement.

The Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2017 (Vic) will come into force in June 2019, becoming the first law in Australia in 20 years to permit voluntary assisted dying (VAD). This paper considers how other Australian states and territories are likely to respond to this development. It analyses three key factors that suggest that law reform is likely to occur in other parts of Australia: (1) the growing international trend to permit VAD; (2) social science evidence about how VAD regimes operate; and (3) changes to the local political environment. The paper argues that these three factors, coupled with the effect of Victoria changing its law, suggest that other VAD law reform is likely to occur in Australia. It also considers the different types of laws that may be adopted, including whether other states and territories will follow the very conservative Victorian approach or adopt more liberal models. What is known about the topic? Despite sustained law reform efforts in parliaments across the country, Victoria is the first Australian jurisdiction to pass a law permitting VAD in 20 years. What does this paper add? This paper addresses likely future trends in VAD law reform in Australia. Drawing on international developments, a growing body of social science evidence about how VAD regimes work in practice, and evidence about a changing local political environment, the paper argues that other states and territories in Australia will also enact laws about VAD. What are the implications for practitioners? The legalisation of VAD has significant implications for health professionals, health administrators and health systems. Understanding how reform may occur and what legal models may be considered supports participation in the law reform process and preparation for likely change.

The objective was to create a multidisciplinary education plan for discharge home following implantation of a ventricular assist device (VAD) in pediatrics. Educational program was developed for the local community: emergency department, emergency medical services, medical transport team, as well as, the pediatric patient and their caregivers. Education geared to the individual learner included both lecture and hands-on training. A direct line for family and local providers to speak directly with a VAD-trained physician 24/7 was also created. Patient and caregivers required to 1) perform 10 supervised power exchanges; 2) qualify written quizzes on the controller, battery charger, alarms, and troubleshooting; 3) perform 10 supervised dressing changes; 4) pass simulation session responding correctly to alarm scenarios; and 5) take both an on-campus and off-campus field trip unaccompanied by support staff. Once the education plan is complete and the patient is medically stable, they are considered ready for discharge. From a mechanical support perspective, discharge home of a medically complex pediatric patient on a durable VAD can be accomplished safely, even in a low volume center, with attention to detail, creation of a robust education plan, and close partnership between the VAD team, the family, and the community.

The Doppler velocity dealiasing technique based on alias-robust VAD and variational (AR-Var) analyses developed at the National Severe Storms Laboratory for radar data quality control and assimilation is further improved in its two-step procedures: the reference check in the first step and the continuity check in the second step. In the first step, the alias-robust variational analysis is modified adaptively and used in place of the alias-robust velocity-azimuth display (VAD) analysis for all scan modes (rather than solely the WSR-88D volume coverage pattern 31 with the Nyquist velocityvNreduced below 12 m s−1and the TDWR Mod80 withvNreduced below 15 m s−1), so more raw data can pass the stringent threshold conditions used by the reference check in the first step. This improves the dealiased data coverage without false dealiasing to better satisfy the high data quality standard required by radar data assimilation. In the second step, new procedures are designed and added to the continuity check to increase the dealiased data coverage over storm-scale areas threatened by intense mesocyclones and their generated tornados. The performances of the improved dealiasing technique versus the existing techniques are exemplified by the results obtained for tornadic storms scanned by the operational KTLX radar in Oklahoma.

Il arrive de fois que nous nous demandons : si la République Démocratique du Congo est prête pour la démocratie et si elle a compris bien la démocratie. Bien que le multipartisme soit un principe (indispensable) parmi tant d’autres de la démocratie et que la démocratie pluraliste (modèle choisi par la RDC) se fonde sur la reconnaissance de la légitimité d’une pluralité effective de partis politiques, mais le parti politique n’est pas une société commerciale que tout le monde peut créer en vertu du libéralisme democraticoéconomique et dont le fonds de commerce est le désordre politique et violations droits fondamentaux en vue de conquérir du pouvoir. Etant donné qu’un tel désordre à l’impact négatif d’abord au développement de l’Etat, en suite, à la consolidation d’un Etat de droit et enfin, au respect des droits humains; il faut que le Droit encadre le phénomène de la prolifération des partis politiques en RDC. Cela étant besoin que nécessite sa diversité ethnico-tribale. Comme l’a si bien dit Goethe, « Vaut mieux une injustice qu’un désordre ». Cette pensée fait de l’ordre l’objectif sans concurrent du Droit, de la sorte, les congolais doivent faire un bon usage des principes démocratiques pour le bien être de la République Démocratique du Congo. Car la démocratie mal comprise ou abusivement utilisée risquerait de mettre le pays dans un dilemme de développement.

This paper proposes a noise robust high resolution pitch detection algorithm based on AMDF and ACF. The falling trend of AMDF is eliminated by an alignment technique, and AMDF and ACF are combined to take the advantage of their complementary nature. These two functions are combined by multiplication and addition over several band pass filters to enhance important candidates and suppress less important candidates. Then using a sophisticated weight assignment procedure, the candidate with the highest weight is selected as pitch. The proposed method is evaluated on different colored noisy speech at different intensity. Experimental result shows noise robustness of the proposed method in varied environments. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to objectively evaluate the longitudinal changes observed in the retinal capillaries in eyes with macula-on rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD), assessed with optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), and to assess the role of these microvascular measures as potential biomarkers of postoperative visual outcomes. Methods: This was a prospective, longitudinal study conducted on consecutive patients who underwent 25 G pars plana vitrectomy for primary RRD. The vessel area density (VAD), vessel skeleton density (VSD), and vessel diameter index (VDI) were assessed in the superficial (SCP) and deep (DCP) capillary plexuses. Results: Twenty-three eyes with macula-on RRD were included in the study. The mean preoperative VDI, VAD, and VSD of the RRD eye were 18.6 ± 1.1, 0.43 ± 0.02, and 0.17 ± 0.01 in the SCP; and 18.6 ± 0.6, 0.38 ± 0.03, and 0.15 ± 0.01 in the DCP, respectively. At month 6, eight (34.8%) eyes achieved a best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) gain ≥ 0.1 LogMAR. A preoperative VDI > 17.80, VSD > 0.170, and VDI-change > −0.395 in the SCP; and VDI > 18.11 and VDI change > −0.039 in the DCP were predictors of achieving a BCVA-gain ≥ 0.1 LogMAR. Conclusions: The preoperative VDI in SCP and DCP, the preoperative VSD in SCP, and their changes from preoperative values were predictors of visual outcomes. A quantitative OCTA analysis of capillary density and morphology may represent a potential predictive tool for surgical outcomes in RRD. The results reported in this study suggest that OCTA is a useful ancillary test for clinical disease management.

Lorsque, en 1827, Francis Bacon écrivit une utopie moderniste, il était bien loin, lui comme ses contemporains, de penser que ce qu'il annonçait, ou plutôt anticipait, était pour se réaliser un jour.1 Dans cette île de Bensalem, sortie tout armée de l'imagination du philosophe, les scientifiques occupaient une place telle qu'ils pouvaient se permettre, en plus d'être à l'origine de l'essor de l'économie et de constamment, par leurs œuvres, améliorer les choses, de taire aux citoyens et aux élus certaines de leurs inventions. Il était loisible, à ces membres de la maison de Salomon, par on ne sait quelle légitimité, de déterminer «lesquelles de nos inventions et de nos expériences que nous avons faites seront divulguées et lesquelles pas ». Bacon dessinait dans ces quelques pages deux pièces d'un paradigme propre au monde occidental : l'enchaînement de la science à l'économie ; le rôle prépondérant des scientifiques. Il ne fait pas de doute que, depuis Bacon, les choses ont bien changé. L'enchaînement de la science à la production ne relève plus de l'utopie, mais il est inscrit dans les organigrammes des grandes sociétés industrielles, dans les bureaux de recherche et développement, et, de plus en plus, ce sont les États qui s'en préoccupent. La politique scientifique et technique connaît un grand essor dans les pays industrialisés : diriger, orienter, canaliser les efforts scientifiques et techniques vers la production sont devenus choses courantes. Le «virage technologique » que compte prendre le Québec n'innove pas : il se situe dans la foulée des nouveaux rapports entre politique et économie. Il n'y a rien d'étrange à ce que, quelque deux décennies après la modernisation des années 1960, après la mise sur pied d'un État moderne, offrant une gamme de services publics équivalente à celle des autres pays industriels avancés, au moment où partout se développe la politique de développement scientifique et technique, le gouvernement du Québec emboîte le pas. Comme piétiner, c'est reculer, mieux vaut alors suivre... Le virage technologique forme la deuxième partie d'un énoncé de politique, dans lequel le gouvernement du Québec se propose, ni plus ni moins, que de « bâtir le Québec ». Ce qui n'est pas une mince affaire : qu'entend-on par bâtir un pays ? Raffermir des secteurs économiques forts ou prometteurs ; éliminer les plus faibles ; favoriser l'adoption de technologies de pointe ; encourager, voire susciter, les innovations locales ; miser sur les compétences et les habiletés humaines ; tabler sur les avantages et les atouts naturels du Québec? Ou bien, maintenir, instaurer ou renouveler des institutions démocratiques ; respecter, par des lois, la pluralité des valeurs et des institutions; permettre l'expression libre des valeurs et des choix individuels et collectifs? On ne se tromperait pas en affirmant que, aux yeux du groupe de dirigeants actuel, les années 1960 ont emprunté la seconde voie. Aujourd'hui, celle-ci étant assurée, il faut, face à la crise, choisir la voie de la construction économique et technologique. Après le social, se plaît-on à dire, l'économique. Et l'économie tourne de plus en plus au rythme du développement technique. Toutefois, le rapport Le virage technologique ne porte pas uniquement sur l'économie et la technologie; il n'est pas de page où le social, par la voie de la concertation, de la consultation, de la coordination, et du consensus, ne soit appelé. En fait, bâtir le Québec est autant techno-économique que social, du moins dans la perspective du rapport. Il nous faut donc regarder de plus près en quoi le virage, ou la construction, est technologique; et quelle idée se fait le rapport de la concertation entre les agents économiques amenés à prendre ce « virage technologique ».

Au début des années 1990 au Sabah (Malaisie orientale), la division " Biotech " du groupe Yayasan Sabah a développé avec des chercheurs du Cirad Forêt une technique efficiente de clonage industriel par bouturage et microbouturage de tecks, Tectona grandis, de tous âges. Les premiers clones ont été produits à partir de huit tecks "Plus" sélectionnés au Sabah, pour leurs caractéristiques phénotypiques et de croissance supérieures, sous 2 500 mm de pluie bien répartis sur l'année. Le comportement tout à fait convaincant au champ des premiers représentants de ces clones a favorisé rapidement leur propagation à grande échelle pour répondre aux fortes demandes, locales et internationales. Depuis, plusieurs millions de tecks clonés ont été produits à partir de ces huit têtes de clone initiales et la demande ne cesse d'augmenter. Cette situation nous a incités à synthétiser les informations disponibles sur le comportement de ces clones dans les différents sites où ils ont été introduits. Les premières observations indiquent que ce matériel a fait preuve d'une grande faculté d'adaptation dans des conditions environnementales très variées, surpassant dans chaque site d'introduction toutes les autres origines de tecks, tant du point de vue de la quantité que de la qualité du bois produit. Cette remarque vaut également pour des lieux ne recevant que 1 000 mm de pluie par an avec huit mois de saison sèche, conditions pluviométriques bien inférieures à celles du Sabah. Des situations bénéficiant d'une forte pluviométrie équitablement répartie sur l'ensemble de l'année sont néanmoins préférables pour garantir le meilleur de ces clones. Un de leurs attraits majeurs demeure la formation précoce de fûts droits et hauts avec un minimum de branches, ce qui encourage leur utilisation en agroforesterie et réduit les opérations d'élagage. La disponibilité en clones de tecks présentant de tels avantages comparatifs est à l'origine de l'essor actuel des plantations clonales industrielles de tecks dans de nombreux pays.

His return to his native country will further increase his suffering because everyone will disassociate themselves from him on the grounds that he is worthless because he could not make a fortune in France. Behind his social rejection with tragic consequences, the author strongly criticizes the alleged African family love. RÉSUMÉ: Mettre au monde des enfants est devenu une manière de souscrire à une assurance-vie dans certaines contrées d’Afrique subsaharienne. Puisque les enfants ont l’obligation de prendre soin de leurs parents. C’est précisément ce que met en scène Le Ventre de l’Atlantique (2003) de Fatou Diome, à travers un footballeur en herbe nommé Moussa à qui son recruteur Jean-Charles Sauveur prédisait une grande carrière dans les clubs français voire européens. Malheureusement, sa carrière footballistique va subitement prendre fin. Il va connaître la précarité sociale en France avant d’être expulsé pour séjour irrégulier. Abstract The purpose of this study was to describe the composition of the bird community in Portachuelo Pass, located in Henri Pittier National Park, Venezuela. Portachuelo Pass is an important route for migratory birds between northern South America and the Southern Cone. During 11 months of sampling between 2010 and 2012, we captured 1,460 birds belonging to 125 identified species, 29 families, and 9 orders. The families with the highest relative abundance and species richness were Trochilidae and Thraupidae and the most common species were the Violet-chested Hummingbird (Sternoclyta cyanopectus), Olive-striped Flycatcher (Mionectes olivaceus), Plain-brown Woodcreeper (Dendrocincla fuliginosa), Orange-bellied Euphonia (Euphonia xanthogaster), Violet-fronted Brilliant (Heliodoxa leadbeateri), Vaux’s Swift (Chaetura vauxi), Red-eared Parakeet (Pyrrhura hoematotis), Golden-tailed Sapphire (Chrysuronia oenone), Black-hooded Thrush (Turdus olivater), and Gray-rumped Swift (Chaetura cinereiventris). These species represented 52.4% of total captures and 8.0% of identified species. We captured 5 endemic species and 8 migratory species. The months of greatest relative abundance and species richness were June and July 2010 and January 2011. Birds captured belonged to the following feeding guilds: insectivorous, nectarivorous-insectivorous, frugivorous, frugivorous-insectivorous, granivorous, frugivorous-folivorous, omnivorous, carnivorous, and frugivorous-granivorous. We recaptured 226 individuals, with the highest percentage of recaptures occurring between January and May 2011. Additionally, we report altitudinal range extensions for the Streaked Tuftedcheek (Pseudocolaptes boissonneautii) and the Oleaginous Hemispingus (Sphenopsis frontalis). Ces espèces représentaient 52,4 % du total des captures et 8,0 % des espèces identifiées. Nous avons capturé 5 espèces endémiques et 8 espèces migratrices. L’abondance relative et la richesse spécifique étaient les plus fortes en juin et juillet 2010 ainsi qu’en janvier 2011. Abstract. In the present study a non-motion-stabilized scanning Doppler lidar was operated on board of RV Polarstern in the Arctic (June 2014) and Antarctic (December 2015–January 2016). This is the first time that such a system measured on an icebreaker in the Antarctic. A method for a motion correction of the data in the post-processing is presented. The wind calculation is based on vertical azimuth display (VAD) scans with eight directions that pass a quality control. Additionally a method for an empirical signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) threshold is presented, which can be calculated for individual measurement set-ups. Lidar wind profiles are compared to total of about 120 radiosonde profiles and also to wind measurements of the ship. The performance of the lidar measurements in comparison with radio soundings generally shows small root mean square deviation (bias) for wind speed of around 1 m s−1 (0.1 m s−1) and for wind direction of around 10∘ (1∘). The post-processing of the non-motion-stabilized data shows a comparably high quality to studies with motion-stabilized systems. Two case studies show that a flexible change in SNR threshold can be beneficial for special situations. Further the studies reveal that short-lived low-level jets in the atmospheric boundary layer can be captured by lidar measurements with a high temporal resolution in contrast to routine radio soundings. The present study shows that a non-motion-stabilized Doppler lidar can be operated successfully on an icebreaker. It presents a processing chain including quality control tests and error quantification, which is useful for further measurement campaigns.

In this paper, an object localization and tracking system is implemented with an ultrasonic sensing technique and improved algorithms. The system is composed of one ultrasonic transmitter and five receivers, which uses the principle of ultrasonic ranging measurement to locate the target object. This system has several stages of locating and tracking the target object. First, a simple voice activity detection (VAD) algorithm is used to detect the ultrasonic echo signal of each receiving channel, and then a demodulation method with a low-pass filter is used to extract the signal envelope. The time-of-flight (TOF) estimation algorithm is then applied to the signal envelope for range measurement. Due to the variations of position, direction, material, size, and other factors of the detected object and the signal attenuation during the ultrasonic propagation process, the shape of the echo waveform is easily distorted, and TOF estimation is often inaccurate and unstable. In order to improve the accuracy and stability of TOF estimation, a new method of TOF estimation by fitting the general (GN) model and the double exponential (DE) model on the suitable envelope region using Newton–Raphson (NR) optimization with Levenberg–Marquardt (LM) modification (NRLM) is proposed. The final stage is the object localization and tracking. An extended Kalman filter (EKF) is designed, which inherently considers the interference and outlier problems of range measurement, and effectively reduces the interference to target localization under critical measurement conditions. The performance of the proposed system is evaluated by the experimental evaluation of conditions, such as stationary pen localization, stationary finger localization, and moving finger tracking. The experimental results verify the performance of the system and show that the system has a considerable degree of accuracy and stability for object localization and tracking.

Objective: To analyze the performance of custom semi-automated software for quantitative analysis of retinal capillaries in eyes with macula-off rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) and the role of these microvascular measures as potential biomarkers of postoperative visual outcomes. Methods: A prospective, observational, and single-center study was conducted on consecutive patients who underwent 25G pars-plana vitrectomy for primary uncomplicated macula-off RRD. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) was performed in the fellow and RRD eyes before surgery and in months 1, 3, and 6 after surgery. The preoperative values of the fellow eyes were used as surrogates of macula-off ones. The primary endpoints were the mean vessel diameter index (VDI); vessel area density (VAD); and vessel skeleton density (VSD) at month 6. Results: Forty-four eyes (44 patients) were included in the study. Considering the fellow eyes as a surrogate of preoperative values of macula-off eyes, VDI in superficial (SCP) and deep (DCP) capillary plexuses was significantly reduced at month 6 (p = 0.0087 and p = 0.0402, respectively); whereas VSD in SCP increased significantly from preoperative values (p = 0.0278). OCTA built-in software parameters were significantly reduced from month 1 to month 6 in both SCP and DCP (p values ranged between 0.0235 and <0.0001). At month 6, 25 (56.8%) eyes achieved a best-corrected visual acuity BCVA ≥ 0.3 (LogMAR). The greater the preoperative BCVA, the greater the probability of achieving good visual outcomes (Odds ratio: 11.06; p = 0.0037). However, none of the OCTA parameters were associated with the probability of achieving a BCVA improvement ≥ 0.3. Conclusions: Quantitative evaluation of capillary density and morphology through OCTA and semi-automated software represents a valuable tool for clinical assessment and managing the disease comprehensively.

Abstract 1994–97 the NMSG conducted a population-based prospective study evaluating the effect of intensive therapy (IT) including autologous transplantation (ASCT) as up-front therapy in newly diagnosed symptomatic myeloma pts <60 yrs. The primary aim was to compare survival to a historic control group. We have now updated these results with a median follow-up of 62 months (m), focusing on factors influencing survival and the clinical features in pats relapsing after ASCT. 313 pts were included in the treatment protocol, constituting the intensive therapy group (ITG). The control group (CG) was derived from five previous population-based Nordic studies on conventional therapy and comprised 274 pts who retrospectively were found to fulfil the eligibility criteria for IT. Both groups were highly representative, comprising >80% of the known and >60% of the expected new myeloma pts <60 yrs. Response rate in the ITG was 34% CR, 42% PR and 11% MR, EFS at 5 yrs was 23%, and median EFS was 28m. Survival at 5 yrs was 55% in the ITG vs 35% in the CG, and the median survival 63 vs 44m (p<.0001). 247 of the 313 pts (79%) in the ITG actually underwent transplantation at a median of 5m from diagnosis. In this transplanted group (TG) 43% achieved CR, 47% PR and 8% MR. Transplant-related mortality at 100 days was 1.6%. Median EFS and survival for the TG from transplantation was 29 and 66m. A landmark analysis 6m after transplantation showed that achieving CR was significantly associated with prolonged progression-free survival (median 40 vs 27m), but not with survival (71 vs 64m). These observations were maintained in multivariate analyses where the other prognostic factors (beta-2-microglobulin, hemoglobin and LDH at diagnosis) were included. 162 pts in the TG have relapsed and 92 of these have died. The patterns of relapse were heterogeneous but could be divided into four groups; “insidious” (31% of the relapses), “classical” (51%), “plasmocytic” (14%) and “transformed” (4%). The only factor associated with the pattern of relapse was response after transplantation. The “classical” and “plasmocytic” forms were more common in pts relapsing from CR and the “insidious” form was more common in pts relapsing from non-CR. 96% of relapsing pts received therapy, the majority melphalan-based (e.g. MP) or steroid-based (e.g. VAD) regimens. The response rate to relapse therapy was 70%. For the relapsed patients, the median time from diagnosis to relapse was 25m and the median survival after relapse 29m. Time to relapse was strongly associated with survival after relapse. Pts relapsing <6, 6–2 and >12m from transplantation had a median survival after relapse of 3, 16 and 32m, respectively. Pts with “insidious” relapse pattern had the longest survival and pts with “transformed” pattern the shortest. There were no differences between pts relapsing from CR or non-CR regarding response to relapse therapy or survival after relapse. We conclude that achieving CR after ASCT is significantly associated with prolonged EFS but not with survival. The majority of pts relapsing after ASCT respond to conventional second-line therapy. The clinical features at relapse after transplantation are heterogeneous but do not seem to differ from those seen after conventional therapy.

Hermann Rorschach s’est intéressé aux différences culturelles ou ethniques en étudiant les Bernois, tout particulièrement ceux de la partie centrale du canton, et les gens d’Appenzeller. Depuis, beaucoup de travaux ont porté sur les différences ethniques. Les textes de référence sont ceux de Henry et Spiro, De Vos, Boyer et plus généralement l’ouvrage d’Abel (1973). Avec l’arrivée du Système intégré (SI), des normes ont été établies durant les années 1973–1986, sur des populations d’adultes en bonne santé et bien intégrés sur le plan social et professionnel, ainsi que pour divers groupes psychopathologiques. Actuellement, les praticiens du Rorschach àtravers le monde se sont mis àmettre en doute l’universalité, c’est-à-dire la valeur étique, de ces normes. Il est important d’observer que les seuils de signification ont été établis de manière empirique par les Rorschach Workshops tout au long des trois dernières décennies du siècle dernier. Récemment, Exner (2002) a publié les premiers résultats d’une nouvelle étude de non-consultants, réalisée selon les même principes que précédemment, avec dans l’ensemble, des résultats similaires. Plus l’utilisation du Système intégré se répandait, et plus nombreuses devinrent les données locales de référence. Un certain nombre d’entre elles comportent de nettes différences avec les normes des Rorschach Workshops. Au congrès d’Amsterdam de 1999, Erdberg et Shaffer ont réuni les données obtenues dans divers pays: France, Tunisie, trois études américaines, deux études italiennes, Japon, Espagne, Danemark, Finlande, Belgique, Portugal, Pérou et Argentine. Shaffer et Erdberg en ont fait une nouvelle présentation au congrès de la Society for Personality Assessment Í Philadelphie en 2001, mettant en évidence des similarités, mais aussi des différences. Dans cette section spéciale de Rorschachiana, nous essayons de contribuer àcette question si importante mais aussi si complexe. La section comporte cinq articles portant sur les différences interculturelles écrits par les auteurs suivants: 1. Hélène Salaün de Kertanguy et Anne Andronikof, 2. Alicia Martha Passalacqua, Lelia Sandra Pestana, et autres, 3. Regina Sonia Gattas Fernandes do Nascimiento, 4. Outi Kalla, Jarl Wahlström, Jukka Aaltonen, Juha Holma, Pentti Tuimala, et Carl-Erik Mattlar, et 5. Carl-Erik Mattlar. A la lecture de ces articles, on s’aperç oit que chacun apporte quelque chose d’original: des données nouvelles, des problèmes méthodologiques, etc. Le premier est une étude de terrain réalisée sur des populations tribales aux Indes qui se trouvent en danger sur les plans culturel et physique en raison de changements qui leur ont été imposés. Le Rorschach (SI) a été utilisé pour mettre en lumière la faç on dont ils se sont aménagés face au traumatisme que représente la perte de leur environnement socioculturel. Les chercheurs se sont heurtés àun certain nombre de problèmes liés àla recherche de terrain et àl’interprétation des résultats. Ils ont néanmoins pu montrer comment les sujets ont réagi àla détresse induite par la situation déstructurante àlaquelle ils étaient confrontés. Le deuxième est une comparaison très intéressante entre la série parallèle des planches de la Scuola Romana Rorschach et les planches originales de Rorschach réalisée dans deux échantillons de population en Argentine. Le problème toutefois vient de ce que la cotation des protocoles s’est faite d’après la méthode développée par l’école argentine, basée sur les méthodes de Klopfer et de Bohm. Alors que les deux séries de planches ont produit principalement des résultats similaires, il est difficile de transposer ces résultats àd’autres méthodes de cotation internationalement utilisées. Le troisième consiste en une importante étude normative brésilienne (n = 200 adultes non consultants), dont certains résultats accusent de nettes différences avec les normes en Système intégré. Par exemple, le Mode de R est de 14 (23 dans les normes américaines), et la moyenne de Lambda est de 1,07 (0,60 dans les normes américaines). L’auteur met en évidence l’influence majeure du niveau socioculturel dans ces résultats. Le quatrième est une recherche dans le domaine psychiatrique qui compare 41 patients finlandais à32 espagnols, qui présentent des tableaux de schizophrénie débutante, de troubles schizophréniforme, schizoaffectifs, des états délirants ou encore des épisodes psychotiques aigus. Les résultats montrent que les patients psychotiques, en Finlande comme en Espagne, manifestent un certain nombre de caractéristiques communes. Les différences principales entre ces deux groupes de patients se situaient dans les secteurs de la perception de soi et des relations interpersonnelles. Les auteurs pensent que ces données traduisent bien de véritables différences interculturelles de la personnalité. Le cinquième est une revue de question qui s’interroge sur le caractère étique ou émique du Rorschach. Autrement dit, les normes produites par les Rorschach Workshops sont-elles valables universellement (étique), ou sont-elles spécifiques àchaque culture (émique) ? Dans ce dernier cas, nous avons non seulement besoin de normes différentes pour chaque culture, mais aussi une grande quantité de recherches empiriques qui établissent de nouveaux seuils de signification pour toutes les variables. Les recherches les plus récentes (Erdberg & Shaffer, 1999; Shaffer & Erdberg, 2001; Exner, 2001, 2002; Meyer, 2001, 2002) semblent soutenir l’idée que le Rorschach est un instrument étique. Si l’on veut conduire des comparaisons internationales, il faut porter une attention toute particulière aux groupes étudiés (Weiner, 2001a) comme aux modes d’administration et de cotation des protocoles, ainsi qu’àla compétence des personnes responsables de l’étude. align="left" language="inherit">Dans son ensemble, cette section spéciale met en lumière un certain nombre d’aspects tout àfait critiques et intéressants de l’utilisation du Rorschach dans le monde. Il me semble que la lecture attentive de ces cinq articles très différents vaut vraiment la peine et qu’elle est riche en enseignements.

CairnsIn Denmark, the term stenkast (a ‘stone throw’) is used for cairns – stone heaps that have accumulated in places where it was the tradition to throw a stone. A kast (a ‘throw’) would actually be a more correct term, as sometimes the heaps consist of sticks, branches, heather, or peat, rather than stones – in short, whichever was at hand at that particular place. A kast could also consist of both sticks and stones.The majority of the known Danish cairns were presented by August F. Schmidt in 1929. Since then, numerous new ones have been discovered, and we now know of around 80 cairns, cf. the list on page 264 and map Fig. 3. It appears from the descriptions that the majority – a total of 65 – are actual cairns, 14 are heaps of branches, whereas two are described as either peat or heather heaps.Geographically, the majority – a total of 53 – are found in Jutland, with most in North and Central Jutland (Fig. 3). Fifteen are known from Zealand, four from Lolland, four from Funen, and five from Bornholm.Topographically, they are found – naturally – where people would normally be passing: next to roads and in connection with sacred springs, chapels, and places of execution. However, they also occur in less busy places, in woods, along the coast, on moors, and on small islands.A few cairns have been preserved because they are still “active” as reminiscences of customs and habits of past times. This is the case of the cairn called Røsen (“røse” being another Danish term for a cairn) on Trøstrup Moor (no. 45, Fig. 1-2), of Heksens Grav (“The Witch’s Grave”) (no. 27, Fig. 4), and of the branch heap in the wood of Slotved Skov (no. 14, Fig. 5), which was recently revived after having been almost forgotten. Other cairns are maintained as prehistoric relics, as is the case of the branch heap by the name of Stikhoben (“The Stick Heap;” no. 10, Fig. 6) and Kjelds Grav (“Kjeld’s Grave,” no. 59, Fig. 7). Although heaps of stones and branches are included in the Danish Protection of Nature Act as relics of the past worthy of protection, so far merely the two latter have been listed.Whereas the remaining ’throws’ of organic material have probably disintegrated, it is still possible under favourable conditions to retrieve those made from more enduring materials – unless they have been demolished – even if they have practically sunk into oblivion (Figs. 8-10).The oldest known cairn is almost 500 years old. It was situated by the ford Præstbjerg Vad in Vinding parish near the Holstebro-Ribe highroad. Tradition says that the stone heap came into existence as a memorial of a priest in Hanbjerg, who died in the first half of the 16th century following a fall with his horse.Such legends of origin are connected with most of the Danish cairns. They usually tell of some unhappy or alarming happening supposed to have occurred at the place in question. However, they are often so vague and stereotype that they can only rarely be dated or put into a historical context. Indeed, on closer examination several of them turn out to be travelling legends. Apart from the legend of the murdered tradesman, they comprise the legend of the exorcised farmhand and that of the three sisters, who were murdered by three robbers, who turned out to be their own brothers. The latter legend, which is also known from a folksong, is connected to the so-called Varper on the high moor in Pedersker parish on Bornholm (no. 7). Until the early 20th century, it was the custom to maintain these cairns by putting back stones that had fallen down and adorn them with green sprigs. Early folklorists interpreted this as a tradition going back to an old sacrificial ritual, although the custom also seems to have had a pure practical purpose, as these stone heaps were originally cairns marking the road across inland Bornholm.A special group of the Danish cairns are connected with the tradition that someone is buried underneath them, such as a body washed ashore, a murdered child from a clandestine childbirth, a murdered person, several persons killed in a fight, an exorcised farmhand, a suicide, a murderer buried on his scene of crime, or witches and murderers buried at the place of execution. In all these cases, the throwing of a stone was supposed to protect the passers-by against the dead, who was buried in unconsecrated grounds and thus, according to public belief, haunted the spot. Another far less frequent explanation was that the stone was thrown in order to achieve a good journey or luck at the market. In some places, the traveller would throw the stone while shouting a naughty word or in other ways showing his disgust with the dead witch, criminal, or infanticide buried in that particular place. In rather a lot of the cases, as explained by the context, the cairn was merely a memorial to some unhappy occurrence, and the stone was thrown in memory of the deceased.In an article on Norwegian cairns written by the folklorist Svale Solheim, the author attached importance to achieving a clear picture of the position of the cairns (kastrøysarne) in the landscape. A closer examination showed that almost all were situated by the side of old roads – between farms and settlements, through forests, or across mountains – in short, where people would often walk. “The cairns follow the road as the shadow follows the man,” Solheim writes and gives an example of an old road, which had been relocated, and where the cairns had been moved to the new road. Furthermore, the position of the cairns along the roads turned out to not be accidental; they were always found at places that were in one way or other interesting to the travellers. This is why Solheim thought that the stone heaps mostly had the character of cairns or road stones thrown together at certain places for a pure practical purpose. “For instance,” he writes, “we find stone heaps at places along the roads where there is access to fine drinking water. These would also be natural places for a rest, and numerous stone heaps are situated by old resting places. And so it came natural to mark these places by piling up a stone heap, and of course it would be in every traveller’s interest to maintain the heaps.”The older folklore saw the tradition as a relic of pagan rituals and conceptions. As a reaction to this, Solheim and others took a tradition-functionalistic view, according to which most folklore, as seen in the light of the cultural conditions, was considered rational and the rest could be explained as pseudo beliefs, for instance educational fiction and tomfoolery.However, if we turn to our other neighbouring country, Sweden, it becomes more difficult to explain away that we are dealing with sacrificial rites, as here, the most used dialectal term for the stone and branch piles were offerhög, offervål, or offerbål (“offer” is the Swedish word for sacrifice), and when someone threw stones, sticks, or money on the pile, it was called “sacrificing.” An article from 1929 by the anthropologist Sigurd Erixon is especially interesting. Here, he documents how – apart from the cairns with a death motive (largely corresponding to the Danish cases mentioned above), Sweden had both good luck and misfortune averting sacrificial stone throwing (Fig. 13).Whereas the sacrificial cairns connected to deaths were evenly distributed across the whole country, Erixon found that the “good luck cairns” occurred mainly in environments associated with mountain pasture farming or fishing. Based on this observation and desultory comparative studies, Erixon formed the hypothesis that the “good luck cairns” represented an older and more primitive culture than the cairns associated with sacrifices to the dead. “The first,” he writes, “belong rather more to the work area of hunting, fishing, and animal husbandry, roads, and environments, whereas the death sacrificial cairns seem to be closer related to the culture of agriculture.”The problem with the folkloristic material is that most of it is based on reminiscences. In order to study the living tradition, one must turn elsewhere. However, as demonstrated by James Frazer in “The Golden Bough,” this is no problem, as the custom of throwing stones in a pile is known from all over the world, from Africa, Europe, and Asia to Australia and America (Fig. 14).Customs last, their meanings perish – the explanation why, for instance, one must throw a stone onto a stone pile, may be forgotten, or reinterpreted, or get a completely new explanation. The custom probably goes back further than any known religion. However, these have all tried to tally the stone throwing with their “theology.” In Ancient Greece, the stone piles by the roadsides were furnished with statues of Hermes (in the shape of a post with a head and sometimes a phallus). As an escort for the dead, Hermes became the god of the travellers, and just as the gods had thrown stones after Hermes when he was accused of murdering Argus, people could now do the same.With the introduction of Christianity, the throwing of stones was denounced as superstition, and a standard question for the penitents in the so-called books of penance was: “Have you carried stones to a heap?” All across Europe, crosses were planted in the stone heaps – which must have caused problems as it was considered a deadly sin to throw stones after a cross. In the culture connected with pilgrimage, the cairns got a new meaning as markers of important places. For instance, enormous stone piles outside Santiago de Compostela mark the location where pilgrims first spotted the towers of the city’s cathedral (Fig. 15). At many places, the cairns were consecrated to saints, so that now people would carry stones to them as a sacrifice or a penance. The jews also adopted the custom. The Old Testament mentions stone heaps gathered over murdered persons or placed around a larger stone, as the “witness dolmen” built by Jacob and his people to commemmorate his pact with Laban, his father-in-law. However, there is no mention of throwing new stones onto these heaps. However, the latter occurs in the still practiced Jewish custom of placing stones on the gravestones when Jews visit the graves of their dead (Fig. 16).Stone throwing in a Muslim context is illustrated by Edward Westermarck’s large investigation of rituals and popular belief with the Berbers and the Arabs in Marocco in the early 20th century. Unfortunately, it only comprises cairns connected to Muslim saints, but even with this limitation, the investigation gives an idea of the variety of applications. If the stone heap is situated near the grave of a saint, it may mark the demarcation of the sacred area, or it may have come into existence because the wayfaring have a habit of throwing a stone when they pass the grave of a saint, which they do not have time to visit. If the heap is situated on a ridge, it is usually an indication of the spot on a certain pilgrim route where the sacred places become visible for the first time. Other stone heaps mark the places where a holy man or woman is supposed to have been buried, or rested, or camped some time. By a large crossroads outside Andira, Westermark was shown a stone heap, which indicated that this place was the gathering place for saints, who met there at nighttime. The sacred cairns in Marocco are often easily recognized by the fact that they are chalked white at intervals. At some places, the cairns may also be marked with a pole with a white flag symbolising the sacred character of the place.Even Buddhism struggled against the stone heaps, especially in the form of the oboo cult, which was repeatedly reformered and reinterpreted by Buddhist missionaries. And in early 17th-century South America, the converted aristocratic Inca, Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala, made sarcastic remarks about Indians, who “even now” had preserved the bad habit of [sacrificing to] stone heaps (apachitas).”Historically, the Danish cairns can be documented from the 16th century, but the tradition may well be older. Seen in a larger, comparative context, heaps of stones and branches represent an ancient tradition rooted in the deepest cultural layers of mankind. Thus, as cultural relics, they are certainly worthy of preservation, and we ought to put a lot of effort into preserving the few still existing.Whereas it will probably be difficult to establish possible prehistoric stone heaps using archaeology, the possibilities of documenting hitherto unknown stone piles from historical times is considerably higher, if special topographic conditions are taken into consideration. In connection with small mounds on tidal meadows or stone heaps along stretches of old roads and by fords, old places of execution, springs, and grave mounds used secondarily for gallows, one should pay attention to such structures, which may well prove to be covering a grave.In a folklore context, the Danish stone heaps must be characterized as mainly “death sacrifice throws,” whereas only few were “good luck throws.” Due to the limited size of the country, and early farming, cairns and other road marks have not played the same role as a help for travellers and traffic as it did in our neighbouring countries with their huge waste areas.If the stone piles are considered part of a thousands of years old chain of traditions, they belong to the oldest human “monuments.” The global distribution of the phenomenon endows it with a mystery, which, during a travel in Mongolia, Haslund-Christensen caught with a stroke of genius: “We stood before an oboo, one of the largest I have ever seen...one of those mysterious places of sacrifice which are still secretly preserved, built of stone cast upon stone through many generations; a home of mystery which has its roots in the origin of the people itself, and whose religious significance goes much further back in time than any of the religions in the modern world.”Gustav HenningsenDansk Folkemindesamling Jesper LaursenMoesgård Museum Translated by Annette Lerche Trolle

Cet ouvrage collectif de six chapitres est publié sous la direction du Dr Solomon Andria (Madagascar), qui a servi pendant vingt ans comme professeur de théologie systématique à la Faculté de Théologie Évangélique de l’Alliance Chrétienne d’Abidjan (FATEAC) et ancien coordonnateur de LivresHippo dans le département de littérature de Langham Partnership en Afrique francophone. Les contributeurs représentent cinq pays (Bénin, Cameroun, Centrafrique, Madagascar, et Tchad et ont une expérience de la diaspora (intra ou extra africaine). Une telle précision vaut la peine dans la mesure où les positions théologiques varient d’une tradition ecclésiastique à l’autre et que les réalités de pratiques politiques varient d’un pays à l’autre. Le directeur de l’ouvrage le reconnaît également en affirmant que « même en occident la démocratie varie dans sa forme selon le pays » (1) et que quelques contributeurs de cet ouvrage auraient répété certains sujets mais différemment car « ils voyaient la même réalité sous divers angles »

En 2017, le Réseau Santé Région Lausanne (RSRL) a commencé à travailler sur le Projet de soins anticipé, inspiré des Niveaux de soins québécois et de l’Advance Care Planning. Après un état des lieux réalisé en 2018, le RSRL a lancé en novembre 2019 un test auprès d’une vingtaine de patient-e-s dans plusieurs milieux de soins. Approuvé par la Commission cantonale d’éthique de la recherche, le projet est conduit en collaboration avec la Chaire de soins palliatifs gériatriques du Centre Hospitalo-Universitaire du Canton de Vaud, Lausanne, soutenu par les trois autres Réseaux du Canton et par la Direction générale de la santé.

Introduction Vacuum assisted venous drainage (VAVD) is widely adopted in minimally invasive cardiac surgery. VAVD enables the advantage of using smaller cannulae in a reduced surgical field while allowing satisfactory drainage and pump flow. The production of gaseous micro-emboli is a recognized risk associated with VAVD, however no difference in clinical endpoints have been reported between patients operated on with gravity venous drainage (GVD) or with VAVD. Due to the paucity of data on selected surgical populations, we sought to evaluate the early outcomes of patients undergoing isolated aortic valve replacement using VAVD or GVD. Methods Data on 521 patients between 09/2016 and 09/2022 were retrieved from our internal database. Patients were divided into two groups according to use VAVD or GVD. A propensity match analysis was performed to account for difference between the two groups. Results The propensity match provided two well balanced cohorts with 129 patients each. A minimally invasive access was used in 97% of the cases in VAVD group vs 98% in GVD group ( p = .68). Mean cardiopulmonary by-pass (CPB) time was 71 vs 73 min ( p = .74), respectively. There was no difference in lactates peak ( p = .19) and urine output during CPB ( p = .74). We registered two in-hospital deaths in VAVD cohort (1.6%) vs. no mortality in GVD group ( p = .5). Postoperative cerebral stroke occurred in 1 patient in GVD cohort vs. 0 in VAVD ( p = 1). Severe postoperative acute kidney injury complicated the course in 16 patients in GVD group and in 5 patients who had VAVD ( p = .012). VAVD was associated with a higher number of patients with elevated postoperative AST ( p = .07) and Troponin I ( p = .01) values. Conclusions The use of VAVD during isolated aortic valve replacement was not associated with increased risks of postoperative complications and in-hospital mortality with results that were at least similar to those registered in a matched cohort of patients operated on with GVD.

Ici, la démarche proposée ne consiste pas, en réalité, à étudier le vignoble argentin sous le prisme de son histoire territoriale locale, mais à l’analyser sous une focale globale capable de mettre en exergue l’intérêt des dimensions internationales et historiques dans les études sur les pays vitivinicoles. Ainsi, et même si un vignoble est bien localisé, sa connaissance impose aussi qu’elle soit connectée avec la situation internationale. Si aujourd’hui cette remarque apparaît banale, elle vaut également pour les périodes antérieures : tout au long des xixe et xxe siècles, la situation des vignobles, qu’ils soient européens ou non, a ainsi été largement dépendante des conjonctures et réglementations internationales. À ce titre, l’Argentine fut, dès le début du xxe siècle, un acteur incontournable de la viticulture et des vins au plan mondial. Le pays sera d’ailleurs, dès le début 1929, l’un des premiers États à adhérer à l’Office International de la Vigne et du Vin (OIV) créé 5 ans plus tôt.À partir de la très riche documentation du Bulletin de l’OIV, numérisé et indexé à l’Université de Bourgogne, nous proposons de présenter une communication qui mette en lumière la manière dont le vignoble argentin a été perçu à l’échelle mondiale ainsi que la représentation que ses différents acteurs ont voulu donner de leur pays, au cours de l’histoire, dans la sphère vitivinicole internationale. À travers cet exemple, notre réflexion portera sur les interactions et les interconnexions entre histoire nationale et globale dans le domaine de la vigne et du vin.

Abstract Objectives Voluntary assisted dying (VAD) was legalized in Victoria, Australia, in June 2019. Victoria was the first jurisdiction in the world to require doctors to undertake training before providing VAD. This study examines data from doctors who completed the mandatory training in the first 2 years of the VAD system's operation (up to 30 June 2021). It describes the doctors who are undertaking VAD training, their post-training attitudes toward VAD participation, and their experiences of the mandatory training. Methods Through the online training, doctors completed a short demographic survey and undertook formal assessment of knowledge (90% pass mark). They also were invited to complete an optional survey evaluating the training. Results In total, 289 doctors passed the training, most commonly males (56%) aged 36–65 years (82%) from an urban location (72%). Most were more than 10 years post fellowship (68%) and practising as general practitioners (51%) or medical oncologists (16%). The training most commonly took 6 h (range 2 h to over 9 h). Most doctors passed the assessment at the first (65%) or second (19%) attempt. Almost all participants (97%) found the training helpful or very helpful and most reported being confident or very confident in their knowledge (93%) and application (88%) of the VAD legislation. Significance of results Doctors reported the training was helpful and improved their confidence in knowing the law and applying it in clinical practice. The profile of trained doctors (particularly their location and specialty) suggests continued growth of participating doctors is needed to facilitate patient access to VAD. It is important that this safeguard does not discourage doctors’ participation.
