Abstract:
The term decolonize has gained a new life in recent art activism, as a radical challenge to the Eurocentrism of museums (in light of Native, Indigenous, and other epistemological perspectives) as well as in the museum's structural relation to violence (either in its ties to oligarchic trustees or to corporations engaged in the business of war or environmental depredation). In calling forth the mid-twentieth-century period of decolonization as its historical point of reference, the word's emphatic return is rhetorically powerful, and it corresponds to a parallel interest among scholars in a plural field of postcolonial or global modernisms. The exhortation to decolonize, however, is not uncontroversial-some believe it still carries a Eurocentric bias. Indeed, it has been proposed that, for the West, de-imperialization is perhaps even more urgent than decolonization. What does the term decolonize mean to you in your work in activism, criticism, art, and/or scholarship? Why has it come to play such an urgent role in the neoliberal West? How can we link it historically with the political history of decolonization, and how does it work to translate postcolonial theory into a critique of the neocolonial contemporary art world? Steenberge, Laura. "Yes, It Is Polyphony and a Map: Revisiting the 72 Verses of St. Martial." Arts 13, no. 2 (April 17, 2024): 73. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/arts13020073.

Full text
Abstract:
The enigmatic 72 Verses for St. Martial is one of the many works by Ademar de Chabannes (989–1034) crafted to promote the false narrative that St. Martial of Limoges, rather than being a third-century bishop, was actually a first-century apostle. The composition is visually striking due to the acrostic formed from the first letter of each tercet, MARCIALIS APOSTOLVS XRISTI, and its two overlapping melodies, one in black ink and the other in red. The relationship between the two notations is the subject of debate: Paul Hooreman’s conclusion that they are two variations of the same monophonic chant is countered by Manuel Pedro Ferreira, who argues that Hooreman’s reasoning is insufficient to rule out polyphony. I use Ferreira’s assessment as a jumping-off point for the current analysis, which investigates the compositional processes underlying the creation of the 72 Verses. Hooreman describes many details in the chant as subject to disorganization, scribal error, lack of ability, etc., but when the chant is analyzed polyphonically, these problems resolve. Beyond the music itself, the chant’s unusual polyphonic structure features reveals that the chant is structured around medieval maps, moving between a mappa mundi and the celestial spheres.

Abstract:
John Paul II's encyclical, Fides et Ratio, describes a profound and causal connection between the teaching of modem Western philosophy and contemporary spiritual dilemmas. The Pope argues persuasively that modem philosophy has led modern man to a loss of faith in the nobility of human reason and the possible existence of meaningful human truths. Modem political philosophers wanted to bring the divine law of revealed Scripture into service of modem philosophic principles of the autonomy of human reason and freedom. John Locke sought to reorganize family life in accordance with such modem principles. Locke clearly modified Biblical teaching to allow for more liberty for the autonomous individual in his imagined liberal democratic society of the future. John Paul II is among those who urge Christians in the West to examine our present social disintegration in light of the foundational ideas that have formed modem liberal societies. We must understand how these ideas have contributed to our present social problems, and determine how to chart the best course for liberal democracy in the new Millennium.

The central theme of this dissertation is to historicize the present time, the domestic soundscape of the Monastery of São Bento, the medieval remnants contained in its architecture and in its musical production, beside all dichotomous, accelerated and noisy loudness of its surroundings‟ urban sounds. Both spaces have their sonorous territories‟ identities. In view of the prominence that the sound production‟s study of societies is creating new possibilities for the current historiography, the research issue also sought to provide subsidies to the historical investigation of the music writing reading rules through gregorian chant and the whole complex set of nomenclatures derived from musicological analysis. It also proposes a restructuring in the ocular mechanism hierarchy in equilibrium with the conscious listening of sounds, promoting new cognitive models of our sensitive capacities. Thus, the main documentary sources used were sound sources, a small photographic collection and oral reports from people who passed by in both spaces

Abstract:
It is extremely important to know the physical and chemical properties of aggregate mineralogical composition so that the construction where they will be used is not compromised. In this sense, knowing the petrography and mineralogy is as necessary as knowing the geology of the rock deposit to be developed as a source of crushed stone. The main purpose of this work was to generate information on the geology, market and petrography of the rock source of crushed stone in the main producing areas of Brazil. This type of information is not commonly available, especially due to this sector?s characteristics, where investments in geological research are usually scarce and rarely required. The five main states that are crushed stone producers and that therefore contain the centers of production on which this present work focused as case study are: São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul. Each production center presents different types of crushed stone, mainly because of the geological diversity and abundance of the source rock in these places. In the region of the capital of São Paulo the main source rocks are granite and gneiss extracted from the embasement; in Belo Horizonte they are carbonates from the Bambuí group; in Rio de Janeiro, the alkali sienites, localized in diverse intrusive alkaline rocks and gneiss; in the region of Curitiba they are carbonates (Perau and Votuverava Formations) and migmatites extracted from migmatite complex; finally, in the region of Porto Alegre (RMPA), they are basalts and dacites from the Serra Geral Formation. The rock mines in urban regions, related to the state capitals and which were active in the period from 2004 to 2006, are shown on the geological maps generated for the present work. One map has been made for each urban region. The most important mines are shown according to the geology of the source-rock and the productivity. Samples and mapping or description of the benches from the over feet were also made in order to further proceed in petrographic analysis. The 180 samples collected in each urban region suffered macroscopic petrographic analysis after which they were selected and analysed microscopically, according to the ABNT norms and to the recommendation of the Laboratory of Petrology and Rock Technology of IPT. The main observed characteristics were: mineral composition, texture, structure, presence of deleterious minerals, degree in metheoric alteration and microfissural mapping. These intrinsic characteristics of the source rock influence directly the form and composition of the crushed stones and might cause difficulty or even compromise its use due to alkali-aggregate reaction or because of mechanical resistance lower than that required in the mixture. The lack of acknowledgement of these characteristics will often cause the poor use of material, especially of the stone quarry fines, which will end up as reject piled up around mines, causing environmental problems. Therefore, the present work has generated relevant information that can be used to optimize and better use raw material and source rock of crushed stone. It might also contribute indirectly to diminish the environmental problems which are evident in the main urban regions of the country.

Gomez, Norberto Jr. "The Art of Perl: How a Scripting Language (inter)Activated the World Wide Web." VCU Scholars Compass, 2013. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/472.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1987, computer programmer and linguist Larry Wall authored the general-purpose, high-level, interpreted, dynamic Unix scripting language, Perl. Borrowing features from C and awk, Perl was originally intended as a scripting language for text-processing. However, with the rising popularity of the Internet and the advent of Tim Berners-Lee’s World Wide Web (Web), in the 1990s, Perl soon became the glue-language for the Internet, due in large part to its relationship to the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and the Common Gateway Interface (CGI). Perl was the go-to language for on the fly program writing and coding, gaining accolades from the likes of publisher Tim O’Reilly and hackers alike. Perl became a favorite language of amateur Web users, whom net artist Olia Lialina calls barbarians, or the indigenous. These users authored everything from database scripts to social spaces like chatrooms and bulletin boards. Perl, while largely ignored today, played a fundamental role in facilitating those social spaces and interactions of Web 1.0, or what I refer to as a Perl-net. Thus, Perl informed today’s more ubiquitous digital culture, referred to as Web 2.0, and the social web. This project examines Perl’s origin which is predicated on postmodern theories, such as deconstructionism and multiculturalism. Perl’s formal features are differentiated from those of others, like Java. In order to defend Perl’s status as an inherently cultural online tool, this project also analyzes many instances of cultural artifacts: script programs, chatrooms, code poetry, webpages, and net art. This cultural analysis is guided by the work of contemporary media archaeologists: Lialina and Dragan Espenschied, Erkki Huhtamo and Jussi Parikka. Lastly, the present state of digital culture is analyzed in an effort to re-consider the Perl scripting language as a relevant, critical computer language, capable of aiding in deprogramming the contemporary user.

Abstract:
In this dissertation, I present three pieces on religious themes composed during my master’s degree as well as their analysis: Psalmus 150 for three-voice youth choir, eight-voice adult choir and organ or piano; String Quartet on the life of Saint John Paul II; and Symphony “The Redemption” for orchestra and choir. Despite the particularities of each one, they present common aspects. The main compositional idea was to avoid rupture with tradition, whilst bringing new ideas into the pieces, as well as to highlight the importance of my research on beauty. For this purpose, some contemporary techniques as well the medieval sonorities of parallel fifths and octaves were used in consonance with a modal/tonal language, which remains the framework of the three pieces. Gregorian chant is also an important characteristic of these compositions. In order to better understand the analysis of the pieces, two techniques are explained, the soft web of linear dissonances and the perfect major chord harmony. The analysis of each piece is divided into two parts. The first is an overview and the second a more detailed analysis. At the end, the knowledge obtained from composing these pieces will be summarized, and the timeless importance of beauty will be reaffirmed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Following the brief definition and discussion of the archaeology of the contemporary past provided in Chapter 1, this chapter will consider the academic context for the development of the archaeology of the contemporary past and its emergence in the years surrounding the Millennium. It then briefly surveys and summarizes the topics which have emerged as areas of focus amongst archaeologists working in the field over the past decade. It will chart the important role of commercial archaeology and developer funding in the emergence of the archaeology of the contemporary past, and look at the role of national heritage agencies and local authorities. Another major issue in this chapter is the ways in which the archaeology of the recent and contemporary past has developed as a means of addressing cultural diversity and recent migrant communities and their heritage, which is inevitably and by definition ‘contemporary’ albeit often with reference to other times and places. The chapter concludes with a consideration of the relationship between historical archaeology and the archaeology of the contemporary past, considering claims for and against seeing it as a discipline in its own right. It is now a decade since the publication of two key books which have been central to the establishment of the archaeology of the contem-porary past as a specific area of study within the English speaking world—Matter, Materiality and Modern Culture edited by Paul Graves-Brown (2000b), and Archaeologies of the Contemporary Past edited by Victor Buchli and Gavin Lucas (2001e). As Buchli (2007: 115) points out however, archaeologists have had a long interest in studying contemporary material culture, dating back to the late nineteenth and early twentieth century and including Pitt-Rivers’s studies of contemporary rifles while working as a military officer, and Kroeber’s (1919) study of changes in contemporary women’s dress lengths. Nonetheless, throughout most of the twentieth century, archaeology has concerned itself almost exclusively with the study of the distant past, accepting a conservative and literal definition of archaeology as something that should focus only on that which is ancient, or ‘archaic’.

Abstract:
Fission-track dating, one of the more recent techniques involving the use of radioactivity, has developed one of the widest ranges of applications. Dates of objects have been obtained ranging from 6 months to 109 years BP. Volcanic tephra, obsidian, man-made and basaltic glass, meteorites, and mica have been dated. A more apt term is nuclear-track dating because fissionable elements do not have to be present in the material. Fission, which produces one form of nuclear track, is a rare mode of radioactive decay. A more common decay is alpha decay, which produces a different type of track. Uranium 238 fissions spontaneously and has a well-defined half-life. It also fissions in the presence of neutrons such as are produced by reactors, accelerators, or neutron "howitzers." About 99.27% of all uranium is uranium 238. Robert L. Fleischer, Paul B. Price, and Robert M. Walker, who have done most of the original work in this field, have determined that most minerals contain this isotope in amounts from a few parts per billion (ppb) to many parts per million (ppm). These researchers devised a chart which characterizes the ease of use of this technique as a function of the uranium concentration. A high uranium concentration allows an "easily measured" age where the observer spends an hour at the microscope counting chemically etched fission tracks. For "considerable labor," 40 hours of such work is assumed. Ancient synthetic glass typically contains 1-2 ppm of uranium, so most glasses older than 8,000 years are datable. Most pottery clay contains about 5 ppm of uranium in either the clay itself or other minerals that occur as inclusions. It is very probable that some pottery clays or the mineral inclusions, such as zircon, might contain higher concentrations than this, which would make the age measurement lie between "easily" and "with considerable labor." It is important to point out that mineral inclusions such as zircons or micas act as solid-state detectors in that they register fissions as a track on the surface in contact with the pottery clay. Both fission and alpha events can do this.

"Surrealist movement, how difficult it was for them. ‘Madame Realism’ was a retort to Surrealism. It really doesn’t have to do with realism. PN: Going back to Haunted Houses, the three female characters seem almost permeable with each other. The reader finds it hard to pull them apart. LT: That’s what Paul Bowles said too. He said it was like a Russian novel, that he couldn’t keep them apart, but that he liked that. It was deliberate. In so many novels characters were pitched against each other, to represent so many different ideas, and then there would be a clash. Lawrence is the perfect example of that. I was interested in the social as well as the psychological, how these interpenetrated. I thought if you took a particular moment you could find girls being turned into girls and there would be a lot of similarities, questions about virginity, their mothers, their fathers. So, yes, they would be as much like each other as unlike each other—maybe more so. It was so confusing to me I had to make a chart to remember the characteristics I had given to Emily, Jane or Grace. PN: There’s something similar about character in Motion Sickness… LT: Yes, in the ‘I’ being unnamed, but I wanted to do the opposite there, which was to go from characters who never met each other, as in Haunted Houses, to ones who constantly meet. I wanted to play with that happening and see if I could get away with it. PN: One major theme of the book seems to be summed up in a quotation you give from Simone de Beauvoir: ‘It is a strange experience for whoever regards himself as the One to be revealed to himself as otherness, alterity.’ That awkward passage from self to other seems to provide one of the main dynamics in your narratives. LT: I think I’m more comfortable with ‘identity’ than with ‘self’. There’s something historically about ‘self’ that assumes one owns it. With ‘identity’ or ‘subjectivity’ you have the sense that it’s shot through with others already. There’s something very painful about Haunted Houses and not painful about Motion Sickness. There is the anxiety of recognizing how really unstable your identity is in Motion Sickness. When you meet others on the road, your relation to yourself can change. Haunted Houses is more painful because the girls are trying to achieve some identity, as if they’ll be able to. By the time I wrote Motion Sickness, my sense was that there was no use in trying. You’re not going to achieve a stable existence, but that’s not so terrible in a way. It might make you sick, though, once in a while, because of that motion." In Textual Practice, 55.
