Abstract:
With the aim of identifying and examining both convergence (matched relationship quality across one’s set of relationships) and nonconvergence (mixed relationship quality across one’s set of relationships), the present study used a pattern-centered approach to examine the different ways adolescent relationships pattern together among a large, national sample of U.S. adolescents (aged 13–19). The study also examined how adolescent adjustment and young-adult relationship quality varied across the different relationship patterns or constellations. The current study used latent class analysis and data from Add Health ( n = 4,233), a national U.S. longitudinal study that spans adolescence and young adulthood, to uncover heterogeneity in adolescent relations with parents, friends, romantic partners, peers, and teachers. As predicted, patterns of both convergence and nonconvergence were found, though patterns of nonconvergence were more common than expected. Some patterns of nonconvergence appear more stable (i.e., similar pattern found during both adolescence and young adulthood) than others. Also, no “high” converging pattern was found, indicating that few adolescents have “first-rate” relations in every relational domain.

Taking the nitrogen monitoring data of two sites S1 and S2 in the period 1988-2003 in Baihe River lying Miyun reservoir stream watershed as a case, Fourier and Wavelet analysis were adopted to explore and compare the periodic patterns and temporal pattern characteristics of the two sites. The results showed that the periodic patterns of two sites were discovered using Fourier analysis. The site S1 had a period of two years, while the site S2 had no significant periodic patterns. The temporal pattern characteristics at different scales were obtained through wavelet analysis, which were at small scale for the site S1, while at moderate and small scales for the site S2. The Fourier and wavelet analysis method can both be used in the study of surface water quality temporal change pattern, the first is a coarse method and the latter is a more detailed method for analyzing surface water quality temporal pattern characteristics.

Abstract:
Limited water resources restrict winter wheat grain yield and quality in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain of North China, and establishing optimal planting patterns according to crop water requirements is the key factor for achieving rational water use. In this paper, 4 planting patterns were applied, namely, uniform row (30 cm; traditional pattern), wide (40 cm)-narrow (20 cm) row, furrow (double lines in the furrow with 20 cm spacing, and 40 cm between furrows), and seed bed (double lines on the bed with 20 cm spacing, and 40 cm between beds). Each planting pattern was irrigated twice during the jointing and heading stages, and total irrigation water was controlled at 120 mm. Grain yield was significantly (LSD, P < 0.05) higher in the furrow planting pattern than in the uniform row, wide-narrow row, and seed bed planting patterns, by 73.4, 64.3, and 53.4 g/m2, respectively, in 2004–2005 and by 54.3, 42.6, and 30.2 g/m2, respectively, in 2005–2006, mainly because of a significant (LSD, P < 0.05) increase in the spike and kernel numbers. These results were caused by changes in the contribution of dry matter remobilization to grain yield (CDMRG); the CDMRG was higher in the furrow planting pattern than in the uniform row, wide-narrow row, and seed bed planting patterns by 5.1%, 4.3%, and 2.9%, respectively. Gliadin and glutenin contents in the furrow planting pattern were 4.67% and 5.85%, respectively, and were significantly (LSD, P < 0.05) higher than those in the uniform row, wide-narrow row, and seed bed planting patterns; however, the furrow planting pattern had no significant (LSD, P < 0.05) effect on albumin and globulin contents. Dough development time (DDT) and dough stable time (DST) in the furrow planting pattern were 5.6 min and 8.8 min, respectively; they were significantly (LSD, P < 0.05) improved compared to those in the uniform row, wide-narrow row, and seed bed planting patterns; however, there were no significant (LSD, P < 0.05) differences in dough breakdown time (DBT) between any of the planting patterns. These results suggest that the furrow planting pattern combined with deficit irrigation during the jointing and heading stages can be applied to winter wheat production in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain of North China.

Abstract:
Quality abnormal pattern recognition for dynamic process is the key problem to achieve the online quality control and diagnose of automatic production. Firstly, this paper analyzed the quality patterns of dynamic process. Secondly, we established recognition model of quality recognition in dynamic process using MSVM and compared the SVM recognition accuracy of different kernel functions for different quality patterns. Simulation experiment indicates that different SVM classifiers should choose specified kernel functions to recognition quality patterns. At last, we established MSVM recognition model of quality pattern in dynamic process using multi-kernel function according to the experiment results.

Abstract:
Diet is a complex exposure variable, which calls for multiple approaches to examine the relationship between diet and disease risk. To address these issues, several authors have recently proposed studying overall dietary patterns by considering how foods and nutrients are consumed in combinations. The aim of the study was to investigate the associations between dietary patterns, semen quality parameters, and the level of reproductive hormones. The study population consisted of 336 men who attended the infertility clinic for diagnostic purposes and who had normal semen concentration of 20 to 300 mln/ml or slight oligozoospermia (semen concentration of 15-20 mln/ml). Participants were interviewed, and a semen sample was provided by them. Diet was assessed via food frequency questionnaire, and dietary patterns were identified by factor analysis. Men were classified into three groups according to scores of each dietary pattern: Western, Mixed, or Prudent. A positive association was observed between sperm concentration and Prudent dietary pattern, and level of testosterone and Prudent dietary pattern ( p = .05, p = .03, respectively). Additionally, Prudent dietary pattern was identified to decrease the DNA fragmentation index ( p = .05). The results were adjusted for sexual abstinence, age, smoking, past diseases, and alcohol consumption. Higher consumption of a Prudent dietary pattern was associated with higher sperm concentration and higher level of testosterone. Sperm chromatin structure was inversely related to higher consumption of a Prudent dietary pattern. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and extend these results to other populations.

Abstract:
With the mounting demand of web applications, a number of issues allied to its quality have came in existence. In the meadow of web applications, it is very thorny to develop high quality web applications. A design pattern is a general repeatable solution to a generally stirring problem in software design. It should be noted that design pattern is not a finished product that can be directly transformed into source code. Rather design pattern is a depiction or template that describes how to find solution of a problem that can be used in many different situations. Past research has shown that design patterns greatly improved the execution speed of a software application. Design pattern are classified as creational design patterns, structural design pattern, behavioral design pattern, etc. MVC design pattern is very productive for architecting interactive software systems and web applications. This design pattern is partition-independent, because it is expressed in terms of an interactive application running in a single address space. We will design and analyze an algorithm by using MVC approach to improve the performance of web based application. The objective of our study will be to reduce one of the major object oriented features i.e. coupling between model and view segments of web based application. The implementation for the same will be done in by using .NET framework.

Full text
Abstract:
The 1985 FAO/WHO/UNU protein report defined reference amino acid patterns for infants based on breast milk and for preschool children, schoolchildren and adults from age specific estimates of dietary indispensible amino acid requirements divided by the safe protein requirement for each age group. This report argued that the protein quality of a diet should be estimated from its digestibility adjusted by its amino acid score calculated from its limiting amino acid in comparison with the reference amino acid pattern. Subsequently a joint FAO/WHO expert consultation on protein quality evaluation (1991) endorsed this protein digestibility-corrected score approach. However it rejected the adult scoring pattern identified in the 1985 report arguing that the amino acid values for this pattern were too low. As an interim measure it suggested that the scoring pattern for preschool children should be used for all age groups apart from infants. The recent WHO/FAO/UNU (2007) report endorsed the 1985 report in recommending the amino acid content of breast milk as the best estimate of infant amino acid requirements. However it was only able to identify reliable requirement values for adults and adopted a factorial approach to derivation of age-related scoring patterns. This utilized the adult pattern for maintenance, and the pattern of human tissue protein for growth. Thus scoring patterns were derived for children aged 0·5, 1–2, 3–10, 11–14, 15–18 years and for adults. The total dietary amino acid requirements calculated for these age groups were divided by the mean protein requirement to give the scoring pattern which should be used to adjust digestible intakes to identify the available protein in specific diets. However because the adult values were determined in subjects at protein intakes much higher than the mean minimum protein requirement, i.e. at 1 g/kg/d rather than 0·66 g/kg/d, the pattern is likely to include higher values than the minimum requirement and should therefore be referenced against the safe allowance.

Abstract:
Design patterns are reusable software design solutions to object-oriented programs. Since the initial introduction of the 23 well-known design patterns in 1995, more and more patterns have been identified and utilized in the software industry. The benefits of applying design patterns include reducing development cost, improving code quality, and standardizing the integration and maintenance processes. Therefore, using design patterns is becoming a common practice to build both commercial software and open-source products. Although most design patterns are considered creative solutions to some difficult design problems, not all of them are necessarily the best with respect to all different software quality measures, such as program complexity. This paper studies 13 commonly employed design patterns in software industry. First, these 13 patterns are analyzed theoretically about their design complexity in comparison to the conventional solutions. Second, empirical studies are performed on five open-source Java projects to investigate the correlations between design patterns and class structural quality. Finally, these 13 design patterns are evaluated by software programmers who have experience of using all of them. Overall, this study finds that although some design patterns are considered useful, creative, and significant compared to conventional solutions based on user experience, pattern-involved classes are more complex than pattern-free classes, both theoretically and empirically. The authors accordingly recommend a balanced approach to using design patterns: design quality, cost, development time, and product quality should all be considered, when design patterns are utilized.

Abstract:
The use of semantic technologies and Semantic Web ontologies in particular have enabled many recent developments in information integration, search engines, and reasoning over formalised knowledge. Ontology Design Patterns have been proposed to be useful in simplifying the development of Semantic Web ontologies by codifying and reusing modelling best practices. This thesis investigates the quality of Ontology Design Patterns. The main contribution of the thesis is a theoretically grounded and partially empirically evaluated quality model for such patterns including a set of quality characteristics, indicators, measurement methods and recommendations. The quality model is based on established theory on information system quality, conceptual model quality, and ontology evaluation. It has been tested in a case study setting and in two experiments. The main findings of this thesis are that the quality of Ontology Design Patterns can be identified, formalised and measured, and furthermore, that these qualities interact in such a way that ontology engineers using patterns need to make tradeoffs regarding which qualities they wish to prioritise. The developed model may aid them in making these choices. This work has been supported by Jönköing University.

Abstract:
One method for improving the appeal of instruction is found in Christopher Alexander’s work on architectural design patterns. In this qualitative research study, student comments on teacher/course evaluation forms were analyzed to generate six instructional design patterns. The teacher enthusiasm pattern encourages teachers to show (a) increased scholarship and enthusiasm towards the subject matter, (b) genuine concern and enthusiasm towards the students, and (c) mastery of and enthusiasm towards the act of teaching. The balanced curriculum pattern recommends that teachers (a) determine the appropriate depth or breadth of subject matter and communicate it to the students, (b) create a balanced schedule of activities, assignments, and tests, and (c) provide a variety of subject matter topics, instructional strategies, and media delivery technologies. The clear and appropriate assessments pattern directs teachers to (a) communicate the learning objectives related to each assessment, (b) ensure assessment methods are appropriate measures of the objectives, and (c) use fair criteria in grading and administering the assessments. The authentic connections pattern asks teachers to (a) help students understand the connections between the subject matter content and the world of work, (b) promote interpersonal connections between students through instruction and group work, as well as facilitate teacher-student connections by dealing with students honestly and fairly, and (c) encourage students to look at connections that go beyond workplace application and help students become better people. The flow of time pattern recommends that teachers (a) help students plan out their schedules for various time periods, and (b) synchronize the flow of instructional events with the flow of events occurring in the students’ personal lives. Finally, the negotiation and cooperation pattern encourages teachers to apply the processes of negotiation and cooperation to solve problems related to (a) the students’ lack of a sense of freedom, power, or control, (b) the conflict within the students or within the social order of the class, and (c) the general absence of a self-supporting, self-maintaining, and generating quality in the instruction. These six instructional design patterns may be used by teachers to increase the appeal of instruction in higher education settings.

Millman, Michael Peter. "Computer vision for yarn quality inspection." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2000. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/34196.

Full text
Abstract:
Structural parameters that determine yarn quality include evenness, hairiness and twist. This thesis applies machine vision techniques to yarn inspection, to determine these parameters in a non-contact manner. Due to the increased costs of such a solution over conventional sensors, the thesis takes a wide look at, and where necessary develops, the potential uses of machine vision for several key aspects of yarn inspection at both low and high speed configurations. Initially, the optimum optical / imaging conditions for yarn imaging are determined by investigating the various factors which degrade a yarn image. The depth of field requirement for imaging yarns is analysed, and various solutions are discussed critically including apodisation, wave front encoding and mechanical guidance. A solution using glass plate guides is proposed, and tested in prototype. The plates enable the correct hair lengths to be seen in the image for long hairs, and also prevent damaging effects on the hairiness definition due to yarn vibration and yarn rotation. The optical system parameters and resolution limits of the yarn image when using guide plates are derived and optimised. The thesis then looks at methods of enhancing the yarn image, using various illumination methods, and incoherent and coherent dark-field imaging.

Abstract:
The ever-increasing demand for good communications/toll quality speech has created a renewed interest into the perceptual impact of rate compression. Two general areas are investigated in this work, namely speech quality assessment and speech coding. In the field of speech quality assessment, a model is developed which simulates the processing stages of the peripheral auditory system. At the output of the model a "running" auditory spectrum is obtained. This represents the auditory (spectral) equivalent of any acoustic sound such as speech. Auditory spectra from coded speech segments serve as inputs to a second model. This model simulates the information centre in the brain which performs the speech quality assessment.

Abstract:
The imaging process can be thought of as the acquisition of data and the processing and display of data. The image quality of the acquired data is assessed using objective methods. The spatial transfer characteristic was measured using the MTF, and the noise properties assessed using Wiener spectra for gamma camera and film-screen systems. An overall measure of image quality, noise equivalent quanta, can then be calculated. The image quality of the displayed data is assessed using subjective methods. Contrast detail test objects have been used for film-screen systems and forced choice experiments for nuclear medicine data. The Wiener spectrum noise measurement has been investigated as a measure of uniformity. Simulated and gamma camera flood images were produced. Observer tests were carried out to give a contrast at which the non-uniform flood images could be distinguished from the uniform flood images. Wiener spectra were produced and single number indices derived. Statistical tests were performed to determine the contrast at which the uniform and non-uniform Wiener spectra can be distinguished. Results showed that Wiener spectra measurements can be used as a measure of uniformity under certain conditions. The application of resolution and noise measurements to the evaluation of film-screen systems and radiographic techniques has been considered. The results follow the trends presented in the literature. Provided that the scanning equipment is available tests on film-screen systems are practical to perform and are an important addition to other evaluation tests. Results show the ideal observer approach of measuring the resolution, noise and hence noise equivalent quanta, is a practical method of assessing image quality in a hospital environment.

Abstract:
Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited
Quality Assurance (QA) is a critical factor in the development of successful software systems. Through the use of various QA tools, project managers can ensure that a desired level of performance and reliability is built into the system. However, these tools are not without cost. Project managers must weight all QA costs and benefits for each development environment before weigh all QA costs and benefits for each development environment before establishing an allocation strategy. The development of a system dynamics model has provided project managers with an automated tool that accurately replicates a project's dynamic behavior. This model can be used to determine the optimal quality assurance distribution pattern over a given project's life cycle. The objective of this thesis was to enhance a prototype expert system module that interacts with the system dynamics model for determining QA effort allocation schemes. The new module uses a pattern search algorithm to derive an optimal distribution scheme from a given set of project parameters. This system not only resolves all limitations discovered in the prototype model but also achieved significant reductions in total project cost.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on developing a nondestructive strategy for measuring the quality of food using hyperspectral imaging. The specific focus is to develop a classification methodology for detecting bruised/unbruised areas in hyperspectral images of fruits such as strawberries through the classification of pixels containing the edible portion of the fruit. A multiband segmentation algorithm is formulated to generate a mask for extracting the edible pixels from each band in a hypercube. A key feature of the segmentation algorithm is that it makes no prior assumptions for selecting the bands involved in the segmentation. Consequently, different bands may be selected for different hypercubes to accommodate the intra-hypercube variations. Gaussian univariate classifiers are implemented to classify the bruised-unbruised pixels in each band and it is shown that many band classifiers yield 100% classification accuracies. Furthermore, it is shown that the bands that contain the most useful discriminatory information for classifying bruised-unbruised pixels can be identified from the classification results. The strategy developed in this study will facilitate the design of fruit sorting systems using NIR cameras with selected bands.

Full text
Abstract:
Mortality in Algeria has declined significantly since the country declared its independence in 1962. This trend has been accompanied by improvements in data quality and changes in estimation methodology, both of which are scarcely documented, and may distort the natural evolution of mortality as reported in official statistics. In this paper, our aim is to detect these methodological and data quality changes by means of the visual inspection of mortality surfaces, which represent the evolution of mortality rates, mortality improvement rates and the male-female mortality ratio over age and time. Data quality problems are clearly visible during the 1977–1982 period. The quality of mortality data has improved after 1983, and even further since the population census of 1998, which coincided with the end of the civil war. Additional inexplicable patterns have also been detected, such as a changing mortality age pattern during the period before 1983, and a changing pattern of excess female mortality at reproductive ages, which suddenly appears in 1983 and disappears in 1992.

Abstract:
This paper uses new data to study school management and productivity in India. We report four main results. First, management quality in public schools is low, and ~2σ below high-income countries with comparable data. Second, private schools have higher management quality, driven by much stronger people management. Third, people management quality is correlated with both independent measures of teaching practice, as well as school productivity measured by student value added. Fourth, private school teacher pay is positively correlated with teacher effectiveness, and better managed private schools are more likely to retain more effective teachers. Neither pattern is seen in public schools.

Cram, Jana, Mary Levandowski, Kaci Fitzgibbon, and Andrew Ray. Water resources summary for the Snake River and Jackson Lake Reservoir in Grand Teton National Park and John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway: Preliminary analysis of 2016 data. National Park Service, June 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/nrr-2285179.

Full text
Abstract:
This report summarizes discharge and water quality monitoring data for the Snake River and Jackson Lake reservoir levels in Grand Teton National Park and John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway for calendar year 2016. Annual and long-term discharge summaries and an evaluation of chemical conditions relative to state and federal water quality standards are presented. These results are considered provisional, and may be subject to change. River Discharge: Hydrographs for the Snake River at Flagg Ranch, WY, and Moose, WY, exhibit a general pattern of high early summer flows and lower baseflows occurring in late summer and fall. During much of 2016, flows at the Flagg Ranch monitoring location were similar to the 25th percentile of daily flows at that site. Peak flows at Flagg Ranch were similar to average peak flow from 1983 to 2015 but occurred eleven days earlier in the year compared to the long-term average. Peak flows and daily flows at the Moose monitoring station were below the long-term average. Peak flows occurred four days later than the long-term average. During summer months, the unnatural hydro-graph at the Moose monitoring location exhibited signs of flow regulation associated with the management of Jackson Lake. Water Quality Monitoring in the Snake River: Water quality in the Snake River exhibited seasonal variability over the sampling period. Specifically, total iron peaked during high flows. In contrast, chloride, sulfate, sodium, magnesium, and calcium levels were at their annual minimum during high flows. Jackson Lake Reservoir: Reservoir storage dynamics in Jackson Lake exhibit a pattern of spring filling associated with early snowmelt runoff reaching maximum storage in mid-summer (on or near July 1). During 2016, filling water levels and reservoir storage began to increase in Jackson Lake nearly two weeks earlier than the long-term average and coincident with increases in runoff-driven flows in the Snake River. Although peak storage in Jackson Lake was larger and occurred earlier than the long-term average, minimum storage levels were similar to the long-term average.
