Abstract:
Setswana, spoken by about 4.5 million people throughout Botswana, is well-known in the literature for “post-nasal devoicing,” in which /b/ and /l/ become [p]‌ and [t] after nasals, contra the expected, phonetically-grounded pattern of post-nasal voicing. Sebirwa, in contrast, has at most 15,000 speakers concentrated in the far eastern corner of the country. Sebirwa is being overwhelmed by Setswana, and in a process of “massive Tswananization,” has borrowed some aspects of post-nasal devoicing. Our analysis, based on fieldwork in the village of Molalatau, shows that the Sebirwa pattern is doubly unexpected: only /b/ devoices, not /d/ and /g/. We attribute the asymmetry to frequency effects from Setswana, where, due to a skewed voicing inventory, the majority of lexical items that exhibit the alternation have underlying /b/. We discuss the implications of this type of borrowing, both for the typology of alternations, and for patterns of language loss.

Abstract:
This chapter shifts its focus away from the euphoric optimism that emerged after 2011 and instead looks at one of the more enduring realities of contemporary Myanmar: the continuing dominance of the military institution despite the disbanding of the junta in 2011. The Tatmadaw remains a key policy actor as the “last resort decision-maker” in the new post-junta hybrid system. As crises emerge, threats escalate and local contentious politics grow uncontrollable, the armed forces continue to decisively intervene. The Tatmadaw has also secured a “post-junta” legislative role through the constitutional reservation of a quarter of all new parliamentary seats. This chapter reviews the various policy and legislative functions performed by the Tatmadaw in the new constitution order, evaluating the effects of its lingering influence.

Abstract:
Almost one-third of adult Americans will have an anxiety disorder in their lifetime, with enormous personal, societal, and financial costs. Among the most disabling of these disorders are post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and panic disorder. Although there are evidence-based treatments for these disorders, as many as 50% of patients do not respond, and there is a considerable need for new therapies. This chapter proposes that the excessive generalization seen in patients with pathological anxiety is due to impaired hippocampal functioning, specifically a deficit in the neural process of pattern separation, which relies upon the dentate gyrus and is sensitive to neurogenesis. Preclinical findings indicate that stimulating DG neurogenesis improves pattern separation and reduces anxiety behaviors in mice. As a result the authors hypothesize that pharmacological or environmental manipulations aimed at stimulating neurogenesis will be beneficial for the treatment of anxiety disorders.

Abstract:
There are at least as many ways to recover from critical illness as there are to become critically ill. This chapter argues that, to understand recovery, we need to understand both its trajectory and the different domains in which recovery occurs. An adequate description of recovery should include pre-illness characteristics, depth of problems during the acute illness, the rate and duration of recovery, the extent of peak recovery, and long-term differences in post-illness trajectory. It should also take seriously the distinct domains mapped out in the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Functioning (ICF): tissue impairment, activity limitations, participation restriction, and health-related quality of life. These domains each represent distinct and important facets, and separately assessing each leads to deeper understanding and opportunities for intervention.

Abstract:
The discovery of pain biomarkers has profound implications for both pharmacology and neurobiology; in 2013, in the landmark paper discussed in this chapter, Wager et al. presented a neurologic signature of pain based on human brain imaging performed in healthy individuals administered experimental heat-pain stimuli. Using advanced analytic methods based on machine learning and multivariate pattern analysis, Wagner et al. provide very convincing support for the idea that pain is encoded in a distinctive pattern of brain activity in one or several brain areas typically referred to as the ‘pain matrix’, which acts as a saliency detection system for the body. Although the usage of such tool to infer pain in patients poses major challenges and is clearly not indicated in medico-legal contexts, the study provides experimental proof of concept in favour of a pattern theory of pain as well as for a specificity theory of pain.

Abstract:
This article discusses China's growing role in international business. It begins by describing developments in the country's inward and outward foreign direct investment (FDI) and the forms adopted for such investment. China is both a host environment and active player in the international economy which has become both hugely significant, and which poses new challenges for international business analysis. It continues by considering the kind of environment that China presents for international business, one in which the state continues to be closely involved. The last section turns to the implications China has for international business analysis, concerning the role of national institutions, the strategies available to foreign investing firms for coping with environmental complexity, and issues posed by its patterns of outward FDI.

Abstract:
This article examines the role of governments and civil society in shaping and encouraging corporate social responsibility (CSR). It begins by exploring the relationship between CSR and particular patterns of business–government–civil society relations. It then examines the patterns of business–government relations that are associated with CSR. It explores two basic models. One is the dichotomous view that posits that CSR and government are, by definition, mutually exclusive; accordingly, the scope of CSR is defined by the absence of regulation and public policy. The second posits that CSR is the relationship between market actors and governments. This article also investigates changes in business–government–civil society relations which explain the recent growth and development of CSR. Finally, it examines the ways in which governments have promoted CSR and the relationship between responsible public and private policies.

Abstract:
Abusive posts on social media target women engaged in online conversation with words and images that affirm patriarchal ideologies and fixed gender identities, to maintain cyberspace as a man’s world. This book investigates online misogyny as a pervasive yet little-researched form of hate speech. By focusing on six cases of cyber harassment directed at women in Australia, Italy, and the United States, this qualitative analysis reveals specific discursive strategies along with patterns of escalation and mobbing that often intertwine gender-based harassment with racism, homotransphobia, xenophobia, and ageism. The author provides a taxonomy of negative impacts on targets that integrates findings across cases and indicates pathways from hate speech to harms. The study suggests an urgent need for effective measures against the threat posed by misogynistic hate speech to individuals and to an open, respectful forum for online communication.

Abstract:
This chapter first discusses the nature of challenges that natural resources pose to India’s growth and then focuses on four related issues: its resource trade and investment patterns; the global responses its searches for resources and engagements have evoked; the sustainability and equity challenges around resource development for India’s growth; and finally the foreign, trade, and security policy implications of a growing global resource dependence. It posits three scenarios of how India may perceive itself and orient its resources policy in response to the unfolding global and domestic developments. The chapter suggests an urgent need for the Indian state to engage more sharply, effectively, and with greater commitment on the natural resources question. It also suggests the need for international action to attend to allocation, regulation, and sustainability in the global resource economy.

Abstract:
The theme for the 2021 Edinburgh Dialogue was ‘The Changing International Order and Its Impact on Constitution Building Support’. This Dialogue sought to contribute new thinking on the constitutional implications likely to be triggered by changes to both the international order and the nature of conflict in the past decade, in particular given their impact on the peacebuilding field, which attempts to revise the underlying political settlement. The discussion was premised on an increasing sense within the social science academy and among practitioners that the post-Cold War global order for dealing with intrastate conflict has been fundamentally disrupted. Debates within comparative politics, international relations and international law—to a much greater extent than in comparative constitutional law—are dealing with the shift in the geopolitical balance of power—even if this shift has not yet reached the institutional architecture of the international order. Acknowledging these changing conflict dynamics, some of the ‘models’ with which international actors attempt to assist stakeholders’ exit from conflict—including by constitutionalizing political and legal institutions—are (or should be) changing.

Abstract:
The Congress for Cultural Freedom (CCF) took up the theme of the future from its very first seminars devoted to the future of liberty and the role of planning in post-industrial societies. The phrase the “future of liberty” referred not only to the Cold War struggle, but also to the idea that expanding state structures and new patterns of action in liberal democracies posed new conditions for individual freedom and required new means of coordination and control. The spread of futurology by the CCF, the Ford Foundation, and the so called Futuribles project in Paris was a conscious attempt, the chapter proposes, to create a liberal alternative to the theory of history (and future) of Marxism.

Abstract:
Endocarditis is a cause of glomerulonephritis. Healthcare interventions (prosthetic valves, indwelling catheters, pacemaker wires) and intravenous drug abuse are presently the most common causes of endocarditis and Staphylococcus aureus is frequently the infecting bacteria. Shunt nephritis is a form of glomerulonephritis associated with infection of ventriculoatrial shunts implanted to relieve hydrocephalus and, typically, are caused by prolonged infections of low-pathogenicity microorganisms. This complication led to the replacement of the technique by ventriculoperitoneal shunts. Deep-seated infections such as chronic abscesses and osteomyelitis can sometimes cause a similar syndrome. In all cases, treatment of the infection is the key strategy. The nature of the glomerulonephritis tends in subacute infection to be a lobular membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis type I pattern associated with low C3 levels. However, an acute post-infectious pattern may also be seen, and a third pattern is focal necrotizing and crescentic glomerulonephritis, which tends to be pauci-immune as seen in antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis, but usually without positive fluorescence or solid phase assays for ANCA antigens.

Abstract:
This is the definitive study of the Irish general election of 2016 – the most dramatic election in a generation, which among other things resulted in the worst electoral outcome for Ireland’s established parties, the most fractionalized party system in the history of the state, and the emergence of new parties and groups, some of these of a ‘populist’ hue. This was one of the most volatile elections in Ireland (and among one of the most volatile elections in Europe), with among the lowest of election turnouts in the state’s history. These outcomes follow a pattern seen across a number of Western Europe’s established democracies in which the ‘deep crisis’ of the Great Recession has wreaked havoc on party systems. The objective of this book is to assess this most extraordinary of Irish elections both in its Irish and wider cross-national context. With contributions from leading scholars on Irish elections and parties, and using a unique dataset – the Irish National Election Study (INES) 2016 – this volume explores voting patterns at Ireland’s first post crisis election and it considers the implications for the electoral landscape and politics in Ireland. This book will be of interest to scholars of parties and elections. It should provide important supplementary reading to any university courses on Irish politics. And it should also be of interest to general readers interested in contemporary Irish affairs.

Abstract:
This chapter provides insights into often-observed temporal regularities of different types of crime. It begins by briefly appraising relevant theories that explain variations in time incidence. It then discusses methodological issues that are unique to temporal analysis. The bulk of the next section presents temporal patterns from four years of crime data recorded by West Yorkshire Police, UK. Several units of analysis are considered: years, months, weeks, and days, and a medley of theories are used to suggest putative explanations for the observed patterns. It focuses first on crimes committed against property (predominantly theft and damage offenses) before considering crimes committed against people and, finally, Internet-enabled crimes against both people and their property. The intention here is to illustrate a variety of empirical regularities for different crime types, and to posit plausible explanations for those patterns.

Full text
Abstract:
The diagnosis of first-degree and third-degree atrioventricular (AV) block is straightforward but that of second-degree AV block is more involved. Type I block and type II second-degree AV block are electrocardiographic patterns that refer to the behaviour of the PR intervals (in sinus rhythm) in sequences (with at least two consecutive conducted PR intervals) where a single P wave fails to conduct to the ventricles. Type I second-degree AV block describes visible, differing, and generally decremental AV conduction. Type II second-degree AV block describes what appears to be an all-or-none conduction without visible changes in the AV conduction time before and after the blocked impulse. The diagnosis of type II block requires a stable sinus rate, an important criterion because a vagal surge (generally benign) can cause simultaneous sinus slowing and AV nodal block, which can resemble type II block. The diagnosis of type II block cannot be established if the first post-block P wave is followed by a shortened PR interval or by an undiscernible P wave. A narrow QRS type I block is almost always AV nodal, whereas a type I block with bundle branch block barring acute myocardial infarction is infranodal in 60–70% of cases. All correctly defined type II blocks are infranodal. A 2:1 AV block cannot be classified in terms of type I or type II block, but it can be AV nodal or infranodal. Concealed His bundle or ventricular extrasystoles may mimic both type I or type II block (pseudo-AV block), or both

Reasoning patterns can look superficially alike, yet differ significantly in their supportive underpinnings. Paradoxically, the progress of science is sometimes aided by these inferential pretenders, in spite of the conceptual confusions upon which they rely. Two puzzling developments of this character are studied from this perspective: the “little plates” of the aircraft engineer and the incoherent infinitesimals of Physics 101 instruction. The proper semantical foundations of both notions weren’t unraveled satisfactorily until the mid-twentieth century, when the challenges posed by the finite element revolution within computing were squarely addressed by mathematicians. Their results teach a valuable lesson in how our classificatory vocabularies sometimes divide descriptive duties amongst themselves in very intriguing patterns of cooperative allocation.

Abstract:
A ‘Second Occurrence Focus’ (SOF) is the semantic focus of a focus sensitive operator (likeonly) which is contextually given. SOF has been claimed to be phonologically unmarked, which poses a problem for association with focus theories assuming a direct relation between focus and pitch accent. This chapter discusses the main semantic-pragmatic accounts of the SOF challenge but also empirical investigations which found that SOF actuallyismarked by secondary (i.e. non-nuclear) prosodic prominence, providing evidence in favour of association with focus theories. A similar prosodic pattern could be found in semantically and prosodically comparable structures such as cases of implicational bridging. Finally, an outlook on a possible unified approach of the phonological representation of second occurrence expressions is presented which is based on metrical stress.

Abstract:
This chapter describes the definition, epidemiology, classification, diagnosis, and treatment of status epilepticus, concentrating on the roles that electroencephalography (EEG) plays. The term status epilepticus now encompasses a range of conditions from continuous convulsive seizures to clinically subtle non-convulsive seizures, which may manifest as changes in behaviour or personality. EEG is critical for the diagnosis of non-convulsive status epilepticus. Furthermore, the progression of convulsive status epilepticus is to an electromechanical dissociation in which continuous electrical seizure activity may have no or minimal clinical manifestations. In the later stages of status epilepticus, EEG is necessary to monitor treatment, but is confounded by the interpretation of periodic EEG patterns, which represent a continuum from interictal through to ictal activity. Post-status epilepticus EEG patterns have prognostic value: periodic epileptiform discharges, burst suppression patterns (off anaesthesia) and repetitive seizure activity are indicative of a poor long-term prognosis.

Abstract:
Since the disintegration of the Soviet Union, Baku has undergone a tremendous transformation. In this context, demographic trends for the last decade have been quite favourable toward the development of Baku, with a constant increase in population due to the high net-in migration from the rural areas of Azerbaijan. Consequently, it is not surprising that Baku exerts a disproportionately significant influence on the national economy. The city continues to be the leading recipient of investment, most of which is funneled into the construction industry. The post-Soviet transition toward a market economy has enabled Baku to make tremendous progress in urban development and to become one of the fastest growing cities in the region. This chapter looks at the development pattern of Baku, and its attempts to emulate Gulf cities. It will try to answer the question of whether Baku will be able to copy the pattern of the “Pearl of UAE” successfully, or if it will fail because of indigenous and exogenous factors.

The chapter reviews the evolution of educational institutions and outcomes over the 150 years since Italy's unification and discusses their interaction with national and regional growth patterns. Initial educational conditions across regions contributed to differentiate the early industrial take off in the late nineteenth century. Conversely, formal education does not appear to have played a major role in the post-war economic boom. The slowdown of Italy's economy since the 1990s may in part reflect interactions between the country's traditionally low human capital intensity and its new comparative advantage patterns. It may also be due in part to the deterioration of Italy's educational system's organization since the 1970s.

As of 2010, the global population has transited from rural-based to urban-based settlement patterns. While urbanization poses much pressure to city residents, ‘rural living’ continues to represent more than 40% of the way our global citizens will be living for the coming century. Abstract:
Cervical facet dysfunction poses a diagnostic and therapeutic dilemma in patients with axial neck pain due to either degenerative changes or whiplash injuries as it presents with a paucity of diagnostic radiologic or examination findings. The specific orientation of the cervical facet joints renders them particularly vulnerable to whiplash injury. This chapter examines the clinically relevant anatomy with nuances unique to the cervical spine, etiology of the structural changes, diagnostic tools, and treatment of cervical facet dysfunction. Understanding the relevant anatomy and referral patterns of cervical facet joints allows for more targeted diagnosis and treatment. There are strong evidence-based options in the treatment of cervical facet joint dysfunction.

Abstract:
This chapter presents post-World War II Italian immigration to Boston’s North End against tropes of mafia, racial conflict, and white flight in favor of analysis in terms of segmented assimilation and ethnic replenishment. It describes the following differential pattern: Italian immigrants replenished the Italian American population as younger immigrants “Italian Americanized” into the ethnic group; or, Italian immigrants “transnational Americanized” by maintaining a more linear Italian ethnicity. The former limited mobility and exposed the new immigrant to an oppositional culture; the latter enhanced mobility and limited contacts with the Italian American group. Transitional Italian Americans were thus well positioned to refashion the italianità of the neighborhood in conformity with post-War images of Italian culture and the gentrification of the “North End” into Boston’s “Little Italy.”
