Abstract:
The early absence of women police protagonists from novels and television programs was an accurate reflection of social reality. Women were largely excluded from the majority of police patrol and crime investigation jobs until the 1970s. Despite their integration into a wider range of police duties, women continued to struggle to remain and advance in their positions and often were relegated to police work that was behind the scenes of street patrol and investigation. This chapter begins with a discussion of the experiences of real-world women working in policing after the 1970s integration period. It then elaborates the ways in which Prime Suspect 1 brought the feminist genre to the television police procedural form, a subgenre that has been especially resistant to women in lead roles. The final section reflects on how the portrayal of women police officers in the Prime Suspect series comports with the lived experiences of actual policewomen, in particular, those who occupy high ranks in police organizations.

Wilkinson, Ben. Don Paterson. Liverpool University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/liverpool/9781800855373.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Scottish author Don Paterson is one of Britain’s leading contemporary poets. A popular writer as well as a formidably intelligent one, he has won both a dedicated readership and most of Britain’s major poetry prizes, including the T. S. Eliot Prize on two occasions, the Forward Prize in every category, and the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry. In this first comprehensive study of Paterson’s poetry, Ben Wilkinson presents him as a modern-day metaphysical, whose work is characterised by guileful use of form, musicality, colloquial diction and playful wit, negotiating the postmodern demands of the age in pursuit of poetry as a moral and philosophical project. Alongside the poet’s insistence on poetry as a mode of knowledge, the study argues that Paterson’s originality as a poet is evidenced by his rejection of an idiosyncratic poetic voice, seeking instead to refine a stylistic adaptability. Drawing on a wide range of commentators, Wilkinson traces Paterson’s development from collection to collection, providing detailed close readings of the poems framed by theoretical and literary contexts. An essential guide for students, specialists, and the general reader of contemporary poetry, it presents Paterson as a major lyric poet.

Freilich, Charles D. The “Special Relationship”. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190602932.003.0011.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 10 presents an overview of Israel’s military and strategic relationship with the United States, a fundamental pillar of its national security. The chapter argues that the price of the “special relationship” has been a significant loss of Israel’s independence, and that Israel undertakes major military and diplomatic initiatives without prior US approval very rarely, almost only on existential issues or ones of supreme ideological importance to its electorate. Indeed, the chapter questions whether Israel’s dependence has become so great that it could not even survive today without the United States. The United States is a generally reliable patron but has failed Israel on a number of important occasions, thereby demonstrating the need for Israel to maintain independent capabilities. Support for Israel in the United States remains high, but political and demographic trends are worrisome, and the relationship has likely peaked. Even a marginal change in US support would be severe for Israel.

Kachun, Mitch. Crispus Attucks and the Black Freedom Struggle, 1950s–1970s. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199731619.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
As the integrationist civil rights movement took shape, Attucks became one of the most prominent black figures to enter elementary and secondary school curricula and textbooks. In most mainstream texts he became merely a token black presence, yet some white commentators took issue with even this superficial elevation to the status of Revolutionary patriot, reviving the contention that Attucks was no more than a rabble-rousing ruffian. Meanwhile, black writers characterized him as everything from a peaceful integrationist to an Afrocentric rebel to a sellout Uncle Tom. Attucks was now more present than ever in the nation’s public schools and popular culture, but widespread disagreement remained regarding his status as a national hero to be honored by all, an embodiment of race pride, a symbol of violence and disorder, or an irrelevant nobody who should be forgotten.

Montgomery, Will. Short Form American Poetry. Edinburgh University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9780748695324.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Discussion of the modernist line in American 20th century and contemporary poetry has been dominated by such long-form monuments as Pound’s Cantos, Williams’s Paterson, and Olson’s Maximus. This study analyses and discusses a countervailing tradition of short-form work. Beginning with Imagism, it argues that the short and short-lined poem is a central feature of American 20th-century poetry, lacking neither the intellectual ambition nor the expressive range of the well known epics. The counter-tradition it suggests runs from imagism through such key figures as Williams, Oppen, Niedecker, Creeley and Grenier, to the recent Pulitzer prize-winner Rae Armantrout. The book aims to expand our understanding of the speculative reach of poetry, combining discussion of themes of objecthood, cognition and language with insightful analysis of many short-form poems.
