Full textThe archaeological heritage of Cy-prus is one of the foundations of the territorial and cultural identity of a country that is still divi-ded, yet it remains largely unknown outside the scientific community. However, the development of archaeological excavations since the 19th century has enabled the formation of various collections throughout Europe. These collections preserve and exhibit a scattered archaeological heritage, and its meaning is only partly acces-sible. Passing on this heritage relies on both the preservation and the display of the remains. Based on empirical investigations, the thesis draws up an up-to-date overview of this heritage. Thus, the means used to preserve and enhance it are analyzed, starting from 1960 - the date when Cyprus became an independent state and began implementing its own policy for protecting and enhancing its heritage - to the present day. To this end, a selection of sites and monuments is studied - they are representative of different periods of the island’s history - as well as a nu-mber of permanent exhibitions in Cyprus and in the major museums of Europe. This study invites questioning the history of archaeology and ar-chaeological collections: it suggests comparing preservation and display methods, in order to highlight the current issues at stake. On the ba-sis of this comparative and diachronic analysis, this thesis then proposes to explore the possible perspectives for giving meaning to this shared heritage. Lastly, the matter of the archaeological context is discussed in the final part of the thesis. Archaeological context is revealed as of crucial importance in the transmission of the heritage, promoting new visitor experiences

Full textThis thesis analyses the relationship between politics and culture (museums and heritage (m&h) from a historic-hermeneutic perspective. The first historical stage we study is the shift to the public sphere of museums in the 18th century, inseparable from a culture critical of politics and self-contained in its relation to politics. The second stage is the politization of m&h achieved through bureaucratization around 1900. The third stage saw the implementation of democratization programs. This form of politization, which developed after 1945, relied on welfare-state type quantification. Nowadays the relations between politics & culture is going trough a new phase : the state no longer holds total sway over cultural policies but has to cooperate with other public actors. Finally, the difficult - emergence of forms of public debate on and support of culture on a european scale is redefining the relationship

Full textFor the XVth century Italy was a playground of favourite of collectors, private individuals among whom some very early placed their collections at the disposal of the public. The curious collect objects for the most part of the cases for reasons for being able to, of politics or still religious option, but not with the aim of preserving them. However the development of networks of sociability and business in the XVIth century made cabinets of curiosity an European reality. When the collectors die, certain collections are sold and of other one transformed into museum from the XVIIth century, others are also, in the XVIIIth and in the XIXth century, at the origin of collections kept at present in high schools and universities. The history of the European collections, including with regard to the most recent evolution of museums, allows to think about what can and have to be collections today, and as regards their preservation and the conditions of their study, and as for their opening to the public. Yet further to major discoveries in paleontology in Africa, and with the aim of managing and valuing these collections, numerou national museums settle in capitals and museum representation change to become real museums oriented developments of scientific research. It is also through the paleontological discoveries in Africa that the whole world and the Africans became aware themselves of the diversity and the immense natural and patrimonial wealth of this continent. The paleontological collections of the Chad present a very important scientific interest, which results from their impact on the knowledge of the " Origin and the History of the Human Family ". On more than 20 000 fossil specimens brought to light by the MPFT, 18343 are inventoried and digitized, including 316 types and figured, a database was built with these guys and figured in Access is posted on the CNAR Site and catalogs on these type specimens were also developed and printed in this work. These collections constitute one of the richest paleontological collections of Central Africa today, in particular for the period of Mio-Pliocène (from 7,3 to 3 My). Also generates an undeniable socio- cultural issue. A study is conducted and trails are proposed to ensure not only a true conservation policy but also of valuation, including the general public. Our thesis intends to contribute on second thought on the future of the African, in particular Chadian collections

Full textThe historical and sociological analysis of the setting up of digital libraries in three heritage institutions (Bibliothèque nationale de France, British Library, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek), from 1990 to 2011, shows how these organisations, which produce and preserve physical cultural heritage, have evolved to produce and preserve digital cultural heritage. The digital library has two aspects: it is a technological innovation and an organisation of its own. As a technological innovation, it is grounded on inventions such as digital photography, web servers, internet, optical character recognition, metadata…These inventions are combined by the action of reference groups (scholars, librarians, computer specialists, public administrations, sponsors, private companies). These groups are either marginal or included in a socio-technical network which creates the digital library. The latter is a technical artefact that evolves from a “suitcase-object” with great interpretive flexibility to a boundary object which satisfies the needs of reference groups taking part in the socio-technical network. A digital library is also an organisation, stemming from the physical library which creates specific departments in charge of controlling major uncertainty zones such as digital technologies and emerging online content providers. The latter compete with national libraries in the diffusion of cultural heritage. Controversies between actors are key moments when actors reveal their opinions concerning the technical artefact: translation is the means to enlist members of the socio-technical network to achieve the temporary closure of the artefact. The socio-technical network evolves with time to create new versions of the artefact

Full textIn this dissertation, we are focusing on the phenomenon of the emergence of European cultural heritage. In an interdisciplinary and intercultural approach, it is about getting into the processes of appropriation, mediation and transmission of cultural heritage considered as European in the specific framework of the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe. Based on a set of communicational and organisational analyses of the Program of the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe, but also of three cases of Cultural Routes (Via Regia, Via Francigena and Saint Martin of Tours), this works aims at comprehending the process of making heritage at a European level by questioning, among others, the meanings, the visibility and legibility plans, and the representation and legitimation strategies that are at stakes when members of transnational networks build a European sense of common heritage. Finally, it is also about understanding how, in the framework of the procedure of giving a label to European projects, publicizing heritage can be a place of resistance against institutions that can then influence the discourses about the heritage items
Pompeu, de Freitas Campos Lúcia. "Les modes d'écoute d'une poésie chantée : le "maracatu de baque solto" de la "cultura popular" à la scène musicale globalisée (Brésil-Europe)." Paris, EHESS, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016EHES0098.
Full textThis dissertation investigates the processes by which a practice of sung poetry, which is part of the brincadeira (play) called maracatu of baque solto in Pernambuco (Brazil), becomes a music played on stage, circulating in the globalized networks of musical production between Brazil and Europe. The maracatu de baque solto, that in its original form federates tastes, plays, attachments, knowledge transmitted from generation to generation, when entering the world music circuit creates new tastes, new plays, new attachments and new ways of sharing musical and artistic knowledge. To complete this purpose, I have closely followed musicians that are actively engaged in the rituals of maracatu de baque solto, but also participate in the rites of the amplified music scene. The research along the continuum of the same musical practice in completely different contexts allowed me to mirror two categories used to classify it into the musical production network: cultura popular (popular culture) and world music. While the circulation of the ensemble on the scenes of European festivals features an ongoing negotiation of imaginaries of Brazil within the world music platform, the circulation of maracatu de baque solto in Pernambuco invites us to think about the representations that are mobilized there from the sounds of cultura popular stagings. This multi-sited ethnography seeks then to analyze the amplified music scene, passing by sambadas and carnival processions, the trajectory of maracatu masters and the music production networks between Brazil and Europe. How music crosses the modes of existence from the music scene until the carnival parade? How it makes a common area and its collective assessment? The study of musical circulation raises the political stakes of the world system and reveals modes of existence of music in contemporary societies
Matoussevitch, Yelena. "The Reception of Jean Gerson’s (1363-1429) Legacy and Authority in Early Modern Europe (16th century)." Thesis, Paris Sciences et Lettres (ComUE), 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018PSLEH191.
Full textThe project consists in tracing the legacy of the great late medieval theologian Jean Gerson (1363-1429) both in Protestant circles and among Catholic thinkers of the 16th century. A churchman, educator, poet, humanist, preacher and a first-class thinker, he has not received the attention he deserves. The dissertation hopes to achieve precisely this primary goal: to take Gerson’s name out of shadow and bring him into spotlight, by showing his influence beyond 15th century, which hasn’t been done before. Although the attitude towards Gerson’s authority was largely conditioned by religious conflicts that had agitated Europe during the Reformation, and his posthumous presence depended above all on the polemical objectives and ideological positions of those who found in him a source of inspiration, the dissertation seeks to overcome religious and national divisions and partisan scholarship. The contents of the dissertation are organized chronologically, denominationally, as well as geographically. In order to provide the reader with historical background immediately preceding the Reformation, chronologically it begins after the closure of the Council of Constance. Denominationally, the study is divided, relatively equally, between Protestant and Catholic receptions. Aside from Gerson’s legacy in England and Scotland, which constitutes a separate chapter, his reception in different regions is represented by geographical subdivisions within chapters. By presenting major features of his influence through the massive appropriation of his thought and work, the study reveals discernable tendencies in Gerson’s reception relevant to humanism, systematic theology, devotional mysticism, pastoral care, jurisprudence and early modern historiography, while leaving conciliarist aspect aside

Full textMore than ever, European metropolises are concerned about their built heritage, its rehabilitation and staging. With the recent postmodern reassessment of the object “old town”, cities are rediscovering their own historic districts, formerly neglected, and are elevating them into a cultural heritage rank. Such promotion does not only appear in the guise of reconstruction of old building stock and its presentation but also by integrating built heritage into marketing and urban development strategies. In an international context, and particularly in light of competition amongst cities, they are increasingly defining themselves through their cultural potential by referring to their origins, their traditions and their built heritage. In essence, old quarters have become showcases of their cities, making them major coordinates of identity and image. It is due to these qualities that they are considered suitable to attract tourists, investments, qualified workforce etc. This study aims at examining the utilisation of urban heritage in the urban development strategies of Vienna and Budapest, two Central European metropolises, both of which boast a vast urban heritage. The study is based on two underlying hypotheses: Firstly, the urban cultural heritage is an intellectual construct of the present, which responds to current needs of society. Secondly, urban heritage can be functionalised as a resource for economic and urban development in postfordist urban policies
Aceti, Monica. "Devenir et rester capoeiriste en europe : transmissions interculturelles et 'mondialité' de la capoeira afro-brésilienne." Thesis, Besançon, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011BESA1030.
Full textThe spread of Brazilian capoeira in the world is supported by the increasing mobility of the actors of its transmission between Brazil and Europe, as well as the possibilities created by current information circulation (YouTube, Internet). The capoeira roda (circle) presents itself as a space of plural expressions of ‘encircled’ individualities. Out of consideration for a ‘tradition’ and ‘foundations’, the control of the group and the master is over the bodies that perform a dance-fight and reverse –hands against the ground and feet up to the sky –in a playful way almost to the point of becoming subversive regarding sports effectiveness. In this work of interviews analysis (N=134) and participating observation in fields from various locations in Europe and Brazil, we concentrated on understanding how the career of capoeiristas are generated in Europe. In an interactionist and deeply rooted perspective, we have noticed that Gilberto Freyre’s myth of miscegenation finds a second life ‘outside’. Behind this mask, a first typological model (the micro-firms) reveals a liberal, commercial and patriarchal organization. These structures now train the most deserving members of their rank in the ‘job’ of capoeirista and acknowledge them as teacher, contramestre and more recently as mestre. From a marginal and exotic activity – this intangible cultural product recently recognized as Brazilian Heritage – is now the subject of commercial tensions and territorial stakes. Some make a name for themselves by taking matters into their own hands through the use of the gancho (hook kick), others specialize in socio-cultural activities and a few mark the start of resistance: negaça (evasive move, also called ‘denial move’), malandragem (trickery) and diplomatic jugglery, such are the tools that those ‘dissident’ capoeiristas (second typology) acquired during their socialization with a hint of neo-patrimony. Others still meet around self-organized and participating exchange rodas, by creating locally their terreiros (places) of capoeira. We are witnessing a deterritorialisation process of Brazilian heritage which as the same time produces forms of intercultural relations of ‘mondialité’ referring to Édouard Glissant. Thus, this study shows that the globalization of capoeira can neither lead to a mac’homogenization, nor to its decharacterization, but to the multiple meanings of ways of being and acting of women and men capoeiristas according to three typological models: the patriarchal micro-firms, the néopatrimonial dissidents and the participatory exchange networks

Full textThis thesis proposes to analyze the contents and to specify the heuristic value of the legal instruments mobilized by European Union law in order to respect and to promote cultural diversity. It is also a question of determining the legal nature of this concept. Within the framework of the Common Market, these instruments maintain an ambiguous relationship with economic integration. The promotion of cultural diversity is based primarily on the application of the principles of freedom of movement and free competition to the cultural sector. Conversely, its respect passes by a specific normative framing of the goods and cultural activities which, limiting the application of these principles, makes it possible to preserve the cultural prerogatives of the Member States. Cultural diversity also influences political integration. Community cultural competence, an instrument which ensures this integration, is organized according to the respect of cultural diversity and its promotion constitutes one of its main objectives. The structuring of political integration is also concerned. Cultural diversity constitutes one of the fundamental values of the Union and it leads to a specific institutional organization which contributes to specify the legal nature of European construction. Eventually, it appears like a fundamental principle of the legal order of the Union and a leading idea of the European project
Salema, das Neves Manuel. "Les avatars de Viriathe, Vercingétorix et Boudicca : essai d'anthropologie historique." Paris, EHESS, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014EHES0615.
Full textViriathus, Vercingétorix, Boudicca, the deeds of these three warriors leaders, who resisted to the Roman conquest, have become an integral part of the history of the roman empire because they ennoble its greatness. Two millennia later, their stories still hover: how they were able to withstand the erosion of time? The present comparative research emerged to answer this question. The journeys of these heroes were followed up to the present times, highlighting the strong malleability that characterizeds them so well. Their successive appearnaces in texts, representations, ans speeches contitute a wide field of research in which these three figures stand as figureheads. Manipulated by Greco-Roman authors to exemplify political or humanistic ideas, these three heroes had to wait several centuries before being included in the countries of their birth. First Portugal and England in the 16th century, then France in the 19th century, built bridges connecting distant times and people. VIriathus, Vercingétorix and Boudicca became regarded as valorous ancestors who served the homeland, provoding the ideological base and identity of the nation. From the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century, these values were transmitted through literature, images, school teaching, and monuments. It is more recently that a shift occured, where the national being appropriated localy as heritage

Full textSince the European Council of Lisbon in 2000, the European Union tends to become a knowledge society leader in the world competition. It enriches and structures its ressources of diversity and creativity by generating a renewal of its integration method around a bottom-up approach. It stimulates too a decompartmentalization of all the socio-economic sectors to free all the innovation potentials. So, a network society appears thanks to the development of regional actors and a public-private connivance. But, the legal evolutions need to get the adhesion of the citizens. That’s why, in addition to the policies of education, research and innovation, the European Union fosters synergies with the domains of employment, youth and culture. All these transitions trigger a search of global coherence to guarantee the competitiveness and the sustainability of the European model of knowledge society. To reach these goals, the European law finds its coherence by articulating the notions of active welfare State, meritocracy and democratization
