Full textThe archaeological heritage of Cy-prus is one of the foundations of the territorial and cultural identity of a country that is still divi-ded, yet it remains largely unknown outside the scientific community. However, the development of archaeological excavations since the 19th century has enabled the formation of various collections throughout Europe. These collections preserve and exhibit a scattered archaeological heritage, and its meaning is only partly acces-sible. Passing on this heritage relies on both the preservation and the display of the remains. Based on empirical investigations, the thesis draws up an up-to-date overview of this heritage. Thus, the means used to preserve and enhance it are analyzed, starting from 1960 - the date when Cyprus became an independent state and began implementing its own policy for protecting and enhancing its heritage - to the present day. To this end, a selection of sites and monuments is studied - they are representative of different periods of the island’s history - as well as a nu-mber of permanent exhibitions in Cyprus and in the major museums of Europe. This study invites questioning the history of archaeology and ar-chaeological collections: it suggests comparing preservation and display methods, in order to highlight the current issues at stake. On the ba-sis of this comparative and diachronic analysis, this thesis then proposes to explore the possible perspectives for giving meaning to this shared heritage. Lastly, the matter of the archaeological context is discussed in the final part of the thesis. Archaeological context is revealed as of crucial importance in the transmission of the heritage, promoting new visitor experiences
Macamo, Baltazar. "Conservation et valorisation du patrimoine sonore du Mozambique." Lyon 3, 2004. http://www.theses.fr/2004LYO33025.
Full textThrough available bibliography and research in phonograms archives, in Mozambique, we studied the proper context of Mozambique's traditions. We questioned our sources about the anthropological knowledge transmitted through Mozambican songs and music. With that research we wish phonograms (records from 1953 to 1982) will become the subject of (future) library projects about the cultural history of Mozambique. This worked entailed, on the one hand, an internet based research on various studies on library systems in Europe and worldwide, and, on the other hand, an evaluation of the state of the non-books capital of Mozambique. We also tried to redraw the historical and cultural context of images and sound documents production for Mozambique. Referring to the organisation of images and phonograms, we came to raise the question of access to the multimedia capital of Mozambique. Without an autonomous and efficient system to communicate the contents stocked in archives deposits, it becomes difficult to promote the valorization of Mozambique's cultural and audiovisual heritage. The choice of modern storage media adaptable to the constant technologic evolution will facilitate the valorization of the archives. What relations can we establish between the social, economical and political dimensions of Mozambique and the state of sound (and multimedia) archives ? Perhaps the elaboration of a conservation and valorization system for Mozambique's sound and multimedia heritage should be integrated into development projects

Full textSince 1970's, excavations are increasing in France and thus the mass of artefacts to be studied and preserved. Archaeological objects follow an operational sequence going from excavation to museum. Development of new dedicated storage buildings seems to correspond to intermediate stages recognition. Function of excavation deposits are to store the objects the time necessary for their study. These places tend to get permanent depending of scientific, economic and cultural contexts. New executives jobs have been created for archaeologists. The museum, positioned at the end of to the operating chain, is presented as a logical outcome. The two curation main possibilities are the devolvement to an existing museum, or the creation of a new museum ex nihilo. In this second prospect, a selection was made of French prehistory museums including archeo-parks. The question was to analyze the creation and stabilisation process of museums. Two different orientations leads to the museum position in operating chain: a subordination of the objects to research or an emancipation in a cultural and patrimonial vision

Full textStudying the protection of the city of Saint –Louis du Sénégal leads us to take an interest in the heritage process of former colonial towns, in the relevance of the use of juridical tools inherited from the colonization (avec un s à la place du z si tu veux faire plus anglais et moins américain), and in the universality of the 1972 UNESCO World Heritage Convention. The historical heart of Saint-Louis is protected by Senegal since 1976 and the colonial town was included on the World Heritage list in 2000. Juridical texts, studies and projects follow one another while buildings deteriorate, laws are not respected, and renovation work does not seem to constitute a priority for the Senegalese, foreign contributors being more active than national ones. This situation leads us to question the weight of identities, of the economy, and of tourism in this process, as well as the confusion generated by international intervention and the heritage overload created by the World Heritage listing. The heritage process of the former capital of Senegal and the A. O. F. Underlines the technical difficulties linked to the absence of original materials that are necessary in order to respect the condition of authenticity required by the UNESCO. Unless the prospect of touristic activity eventually comes to constitute a foundation on which to build a heritage policy for colonial towns

Full textThe hypothesis is put forward of a convergence between an anticipated entrance of contemporary art works into the artistic heritage, and the process of documenting these works - a process facilitated both by hypermedia techniques and by an increasingly industrialized cultural context. Although museum professionals use these techniques of archiving and numerical distribution for documentary purposes, they are in fact designed for a general public that has embraced the ideology of the + virtual. More importantly, this new trend of a documentary approach to art creates a situation in which numerical technologies are able to gain entrance into the art-heritage world. In return, these same technologies assist in the documentation of the works that constitute our heritage by offering increased accessibility to image and information -related resources - the aim being to provide an exhaustive record of this universal heritage (including all periods and geographical regions) that will be available to users in such a way that temporal and spatial considerations are no longer a factor. These transformations are examined from a historical perspective in which we see the institutional construction of an art heritage system that begins with the french revolution. It then becomes clear that the contemporary manner of bringing works into the fold of the national art heritage is different in that it appears to be based on an anticipatory mode, a mode thats is operative in all those areas of social and cultural production that are concerned by a policy of extensive heritage inclusion

Full textAn original conceptual and methodological reflection has been realised to understand the new social practices and representations of urbanity. This research settled on the urban logics of conservation and change, through an heritage’s point of view ; this one can be considered as a contemporary space and time indicator. First of all, a thougt about the actual conception of heritage has been made, then a detailed ground investigation has been realised in Paris. To avoid the cut of this concept, the notions of continuity and project have been of practices, representations, desires and identities of permanent and non permanent inhabitants of Paris made up our methodology. Moreover, it was essential to extract to the dichotomy of old places/new places to apprehend urban places and the city, as spaces with different temporal systems which consider to urban heritage as a progress contributing to urban making. This thesis demonstrates that a common heritage grows up in urban space and that a positive assessment of contemporaneous urbanity reflects past and future times of urbanity. In this way, the city by itself, through the inhabitant’s assessments represents an heritage by the end

Full textThe syrian archaeology is developped during the 20th century, from the oldest periods to the medieval and modern ages. This book is at the same time an historiography of this research and a description of its contribution to the preservation and to the presentation as well as to the cultural policy of Syria and its partners. Firstly, this book realizes an analysis of the choice of the sites and their geographical distribution in the various regions of the country. Some of them were privileged, from the lime-stone northern syria to the basaltic country of Hauran in the south. The middle-Euphrates led to many missions for all the periods: Mari in the east, Ebla in central Syria. Palmyra and its steppes also led to many ancient and islamic researches. But, why other regions are neglected? For each case, starting from the map of the studied sites, this study analyse which period an which type of monuments each decade has studied but also which place was researched to a diachronic prospect from early pagan antiquity to Islam. In parallel, the used mode of search and strategies appears, from the excavation of an urban or rural complex, to regional prospections and the archaeology of planning and landscapes? How did we pass from collecting antiques to a true history of the "modes" of archaeology. The second part of the thesis studies the valorization of the heritage. Which policy of conservation and presentation did the study of the sites product? But also, which museographic policy did it contribute to this valorization of researchs and its results: from the Museum of Damascus to that of Palmyra, for exemple, an obvious evolution appears: its principles are analyzed. This book tries to give a clear idea of the evolution of research and of the patrimonial and museologic policy
Serain, Clément. "La conservation-restauration du patrimoine au regard des humanités numériques : enjeux techniques, sociocognitifs et politiques." Thesis, Paris 8, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019PA080048.
Full textWhilst acknowledging the mutations induced by digital technologies within cultural institutions, this thesis proposes to analyse the impact of these technologies in the particular field of conservation and restoration of museum collections. This work assumes that the discipline of conservation-restoration, far from being neutral, builds our understanding and perception of the materiality of cultural heritage objects. As a result, this thesis aims at demonstrating how communication and information technologies, used within the field of conservation-restoration, have a crucial role in the development of that understanding and perception, and how they guide our cognitive and sensory relation to the materiality of cultural objects. Moreover, in the framework of digital humanities, this work also aims at studying how digital tools can adapt to conservation-restoration purposes on the one hand, while reconfiguring how we conceive the very notions of conservation, restoration, materiality, transmission and cultural heritage on the other hand. In this perspective, this thesis also deals with the way digital technologies contribute to the sharing of knowledge and to a new sensory apprehension of the materiality of cultural objects for a wider public than that of conservation-restoration specialists alone

Full textThe stake of heritage is its transmission (inheritance from one generation to another). Conservation is a mere tool for transmission. But it may happen that conservation and transmission are in conflict, especially for the so-called living heritage – not only in the biological sense of the word, but all that is defined within time : landscape, city, intangible heritage, and, more or less, any property of heritage value. Living material is changing and even mortal. One can try and conserve a property by making it as strong as possible, without needing anybody to manage it : it is conserved, but not transmitted to new managers. Conversely, transmission often implies a transformation. From examples of heritage landscapes (vineyards, large river, roads, urban river), this research examines which transformations conserve what is intended to be transmitted of a living heritage

Full textGuided by the hypothesis that the doctrine of Historic Monuments - between theoretical positions, subjective assessments and opportunistic arbitrations - has been the blind spot in restoration in France since the end of the 19th century, the objective of this doctoral thesis is to reopen this issue, based on the texts and decisions of Paul Léon (1874-1962), the main head of the historic monuments Department in the interwar period. Although his role is, today, often forgotten. In fact, Paul Léon has had an exemplary career at the Fine-Arts. He was head of the Historic Monuments Department from 1907 to 1932, a member of the Commission from 1907 to 1962 and Director of Fine Arts from 1919 to 1932. He is also the historiographer of the Department.Through his many writings, he was the main author of the propaganda of the historic monuments Department during the first half of the 20th century. Paul Leon justifies the practices by creating a theoretical framework for them without clearly stating the doctrine, without this being felt. The study of these texts, remarkable for their coherence and chronological distribution, reveals the continuity of the underlying doctrinal elements and allows to observe their effects on the work carried out.It is therefore also necessary to question the practice led by Paul Léon, through the architectural analysis of completed projects as three flagship restorations of the period —Saint-Remi de Reims, the Flemish squares of Arras and the Papal Palace in Avignon—, which makes possible to understand the practices of the Department. This analysis also allows to observe the points of consistency and omissions in Paul Léon's texts and the influence of practice on speeches

Full textIntervention in the old urban fabric of cities containing a rich heritage is the main question of this research. For two decades the authorities and city professionals led a discussion on different concepts and notions of heritage in urban areas. However, these discussions do not lead to a consensus on urban policy clear and appropriate methods of intervention and thus the status of historic city cores are deteriorating more and more. This research provides a first analysis of this situation by reviewing the different definitions of the concept of heritage and the postures adopted by the specialists and authorities address this issue during different historical periods in Iran. Then, the case study area of the bazaar of Kerman, ancient city located on the spice route, rich in cultural and historical heritage, to understanding how and why public spaces, places of collective memory are partially preserved where as private spaces are in a state of dilapidation. Thus, this study provides a new definition of assets "visible and invisible," taking into account the aspirations of the people towards their local heritage. This paper introduces and defines the « Vaqf » (religious donation), which is a very important issue in the public space of Kerman
Laoukili, Montaser. "Le massif de Zerhoun au Maroc : Histoire, Archéologie et Paysage Culturel." Thesis, Lyon, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019LYSES058.
Full textThis work attempts to answer a problematic of historical and land use planning. Social groups of various ethnic origins have settled in the Zerhoun massif in Morocco, on different periods. It is attested on the local substratum that before the arrival of Islam, flows of Berbers Arabs and Andalusian have succeeded. The site of Zerhoun, played since antiquity, a leitmotif role in the political and social history of ancient Morocco, whose Volubilis was the capital or the largest city of Mauretania Tingitana, and it continued to play its role after the Islamization of the country. With an antediluvian history, the Zerhoun massif benefits of a rich and varied landscape; composed of archaeological, urban and architectural heritage characterizing the transition between the different antagonisms that marked the power seizure in Morocco. However, this heritage is at the mercy of an accelerated degradation process. It is attempted at this work to propose many approaches for the rehabilitation and management of the architectural heritage, and the urban and the landscape of Zerhoun, which is part of a global strategy of integrated development. The study of cultural landscapes, in particular those recognized as associative and scalable, incites us to seek the possibilities of an active rehabilitation. Thereby, this work is part of a cross disciplinary approach that associates History and land use planning

Full textThe history of architectural restoration is an area of history that so far has been studied only occasionally. This research project proposes to establish a history of restoration through the changes in practice in order to formulate hypotheses based on material transformations caused by restoration work. Our project includes seven case studies of monuments classified as Historic Monuments for which successive restorations have been studied on the basis of their classification until the 1980s. The monuments selected are buildings of small dimensions. This choice of examples enabled us to focus our attention on less studied buildings. These buildings reveal different aspects of restoration methods in a much clearer fashion than "great landmarks". The analysis of restoration work mainly covers two aspects. The first aspect, a more technical one, deals with the understanding and critical evaluation of restoration projects and their implementation. The second aspect is the point of view of the history of architecture, which makes it possible to describe the esthetic phenomenon, the meaning of changes, and their impact on the perception of a work of architecture. This study includes a chronological presentation of the different restoration projects studied, and then the recurrent problems are discussed in a transversal way. This research enabled us to highlight the strong continuity in the approach to the preservation and restoration of historic buildings and to shed light on the specific areas in which the changes in architectural design as well as cultural changes led to changes in restoration practices

Full textAssociated with the notion of national antiquities and " historical monument ", the history of the conservation of antique mosaics comes within the framework of the patrimonial universe in the 19th century. The discipline progresses from the " 1er Empire " to the First World War, within multiple policies of conservation conducted by national museums, the Commission of historical monuments and local erudition nets. Italy has given the first models of restored mosaics on which antiquarians and architects based their conception of the Antiquity. Birthplace of roman and venitian schools of mosaic, Italy provided France with practitioners who brought their artistic skills as well as their restoration technics. Thus, they allowed France to pass on its ancient heritage to future generations. The restoration as a mirror of an emerging doctrine and subject to archeological knowledge disparities and different cultural policies of the moment, is characterized by a multitude of choices and results. It begins with a complete and idealized restitution of antique work and progresses towards a limited intervention so as to preserve the integrity of the archeological proof

Full textThis thesis is a contribution to reflections on the local development of marginalized areas. The objective is to identify through economic criteria , social and cultural indicators and associated types of effects induced by the development of heritage tourism in the territory of south-eastern Tunisia. The economic benefits created by Ksour (typical monuments of southern Tunisia and purpose of our research) depend on the ability of this heritage to attract visitors and his ability to encourage local investors to help finance backup this patrimony. In economic terms, the value of heritage is its attraction value and its power to induce a monetary contribution to its users in order to safeguard it. Our proposal is to involve all stakeholders in heritage preservation. This research has helped identify ways of thinking about new strategies for valorization and safeguard of local heritage. A monetary contribution of all professionals and pricing for access to the monuments of the region for tourists will involve all stakeholders in the development of this area. The estimated potential monetary contribution reflects, in some way, the value given to these heritage sites. Our proposal for the establishment of a fee for use of patrimony by the professionals, and practice of municipal pricing for access to ksour, until now free, have been fairly well received by respondents. The new revenue will be used for maintenance and enhancement of the patrimony of the region

Full textThe conservation and restauration of historical monuments require a diagnostic analysis carried out by a multidisciplinary team. The elaboration of the diagnosis of a cultural Heritage Object requires direct observations, the examination of documentary sources as well as of diverse types of analytic data. The great advancements in digital processing, management and data collection opened unprecedented opportunities for integrating results, coming from both observations and derivative data, within innovating representation systems for heritage knowledge and documentation. However, if a range of new tools and data is today available to the scientific community and heritage experts, their correlation and integration with internal/external heterogeneous information is an issue that still remain unexplored. While these innovative tools allow different experts to record and analyze their observations with diverse formats, the results are generally not spatialized and referenced together. Indeed, even though all these data refer to a common physical object, the links between them is based only on file organization strategies or by keyword-based indexation methods. In parallel, in recent years, several 3D digitization technics has been used for generating dense and accurate geometrical representations, but the processing and structuration method of these 3D data don’t include yet an operational framework for retrieving relevant information regarding their conservation state and an interpretative analysis. Positioned in the intersection between 3D spatialized acquisition domain and information management, this research work aims to the creation of a digital framework for recording conservation state description of historical monument throughout the introduction of a functional domain ontology for the semantic annotations of heritage objects 3D representations. The proposed ontology comprises both qualitative (related to a domain knowledge formalization) and quantitative descriptors, constituting the necessary conceptual scaffold for structuring a multidimensional information system dedicated to the correlation of spatial, geometrical and semantic multi-actor annotations in relation to multiple observation levels

Full textThe objective of the thesis is to optimize the management of cultural and historical building heritage using advanced inspection methodologies with HeritageCare project. The answer to this problem is detailed in five chapters: (1) a state of the art of preventive management methodologies, the HeritageCare project and the identification of the state of degradation, (2) the implementation of the general methodology on preventive management is decomposed into 4 steps (anamnesis, diagnosis, therapy and control), (3) proposal of aggregation models (4), results of the application of the management approach preventive and finally (5) the application of models. These make it possible to prioritize the buildings on the basis of 37 criteria organized into sub-criteria and indicators, highlight the decision-making of the owners on the basis of a criticality matrix combining the values of the indicators, determine the useful life of the buildings with the deterioration curves, propose and prioritize maintenance actions based on a developed database. The methodology is illustrated by its application on fourteen buildings representing the French cultural and historical heritage

Full textThe stake in this phD is to make a contribution to the protection of this part of the Cultural Heritage which Unesco appoints under the name of "Documentary Sources of Humanity". Before anything, let us specify that the research was developed from two major sites of the cultural heritage, registered on the UNESCO world Heritage List. The investigation concerns the preservation of a composite material of the past, the real "red thread" of our approach, architecture glazed ceramic. The work contains two parts : The first one concerns the re-creation of a metallic luster glazed ceramic, ceramic technique of which aimed at associating, during the same firing, on the same tile, metallic reflections of various colors, as it is the case for the chosen "reference": the metallic luster tiles of the mihrab of the Big Mosque Sidi Oqba in Kairouan (862-863 A. D. , Tunisia). The know-how to be preserved is exceptional and corresponds to one of the most complex and most brilliant inventions of medieval Islam. The second considers the problem of the preservation of a site threatened by the current climate change: 600 m2 of the glazed ceramic pavement of the ponds of Ak Saray, Timour palace, in Shahrisabz, near Samarcande in Uzbekistan, built between 1378 and 1405 A. D. The instruction of the conservation report, conveniently supported by the General Council of Dordogne and Unesco is about to be transformed into a program which will extend over three years. Full textThis thesis addresses the issue of the conservation of historic towns in central Iran, mostly built with raw earth materials. These have become ill-adapted to the evolution of society and inserted into a vast and dispersed modern urban fabric. The thesis reveals the close relationship between the historic town and its domestic architecture with the traditional society, family and social structure matters as well as the customs, ceremonies and festive rites that define the lives of urban populations. Heritage is clearly studied through the prism of history and the values of traditional society that aspires both to modernity and the preservation of its cultural heritage, thus dealing with conflicting and complex issues in the quest to incorporate heritage in a process of cultural and social evolution. Facing the development challenges posed by the modern city, the tourism industry and globalization, the preservation of cultural, social, economic, scientific and historic values in Iran and the transmission of a heritage that is highly exposed to degradation due to large mutations at different scales (architecture, city and territory), represent major challenges for today's Iranian society. Thus, the research analyzes the qualities of a heritage that has defined its character in a close and harmonious relationship with a desert environment. It demonstrates that it would be beneficial to take into full consideration a knowledge and know-how of proven high intelligence but now at risk of extinction, even though they remain fully relevant in view of the challenges of sustainable development today. This thesis illustrates the case of the city of Yazd, particularly representative of the issues covered by the research and at the heart of the paradox between urban development and conservation; it highlights the need for an integrated, holistic and multidisciplinary approach to the conservation of the historic towns of central Iran

Full textThis thesis is focused on understanding and analysing three concepts: identity, heritage and memory in Saudi Arabia. It is based on architectural and urban analysis as a manifestation of cultural identities. The value of architectural and urban heritage is now recognized internationally. The preservation of the architectural and urban heritage is important for the country development. In Saudi Arabia, heritage preservation policy is a challenge to more than one level. It mobilizes issues and methodologies specific to architecture, urban planning and political science and religious ideologies. It also refers to symbolic considerations relating to the imagination and identity building of a society in search of meaning. That is why our approach is multidisciplinary. The first part develops identity-building and territories in Saudi Arabia. It evokes the perception of identity. The second part is devoted to different architectural and urban styles. It validates the permanence of cultural identities and territories mentioned in the first part through their architectural and urban heritage. The third part deals with the relevance of this heritage legacy and the memorial selection of the population, the religious and the economic ideologies, and in the heritage Policy used to it. This work is part considers news and issues addressed in relation to the specific challenges of safeguarding the architectural and urban heritage in Saudi Arabia

Full textWithout any protection treatment, lots of artefacts or elements from our cultural heritage slowly decay because of atmospheric corrosion. Therefore there is a need for temporary, cheap, easy-to-use and non-toxic protection systems, fitting to the actual environmental laws. These treatments could give new solutions to the conservators for protecting the artefacts and sometimes avoid them complex and expensive restoration works. Long chain carboxylic acids have been chosen for this purpose, and used in different kinds of treatments. Their good performances are proved by electrochemical measurements and artificial and natural ageing tests. In parallel with this work, the iron (III) carboxylate, which is the compound responsible for the inhibition properties, has been studied in term of morphology, structure, and chemical properties, thanks to many analytical techniques. The Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage is ratified in 1972. The textual and cross-cultural analysis of this legal text shows an administrative textual composition, with direct consequences linked to its interpretation. The cross-cultural approach is confronted with the cultural interpretation endowed with several places of reception: from the museum to the interpretation centre. Angkor (Cambodia) classified on the World Heritage List (1992) is composed of forests, villages and monuments. The site carries a cultural complexity, received and lived by the international audience, mainly attracted by this political and media “image” (Label). The bilingual interpretation centre of Banteay Srei temple appears as a cross-cultural interpretation space stemming from a co-operation process. This research studies the reception of cultural messages in time of globalisation

Full textCentral to heritage, authenticity is an ambivalent notion. Its use as a criterion leads practitioners to face concrete difficulties forcing them to interrogate, criticize, andsolve the meanings embedded in the « authenticity of the heritage object », whether monumental, tangible or intangible. A theoretical approach, internal and external to the heritage field, allows to formulate through an organized system, the controversies they bring forward and the solutions other disciplines explore. Such an approach leads to suggesting different « authentication modes ». Despite its artificial nature, it offers a tool and vocabulary to distinguish between different ways to consider authenticity in two case-studies on diametrically opposed scales: the enhancement of hybrid indigenous heritage in the city of Sucre, Bolivia, and the implementation of the World Heritage List and of the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. The different ways these authenticities are combined attest for different appropriation or exclusion strategies both of the heritage at stake and of those who embody it. These strategies may be described as an interplay leading to coalitions and struggles. Stake holders no longer consider authenticationas the study of experts resulting in a permanent arbitration, but see it as a constantly renewed process in which more and more diverse participants take action

Actually, only visual inspection (use of basic tools) and common sense of the surveyor are used to diagnose an old timber structure. In this work, we emphasized the construction of a sharp and fitted mechanical model for each old timber structure diagnosed. Thus, we developed a mechanical analysis methodology based on: ? finite element modelling of the structure, ? determination of the model's influential parameters by design of experiment,? in situ identification of these parameters by NDE tests: - direct,- optimized by the genetics algorithms. We validated this methodology by renovating a wooden bell-tower

Full textHistoric Cairo is the old historic center of present-day Cairo, capital of Egypt and the largest city in the Middle East, the Arab World and Africa. The conservation of this center, classified as World Cultural Heritage since 1979, has constituted a difficult challenge for many years and no real solutions have yet been offered. The thesis is structured around three axes. The first presents a historical analysis through texts and sources in order to identify the basis of development of the cultural heritage conservation process in Egypt with a focus on the experience of the Arab Art Monuments Conservation Committee, known as "le Comité". The second develops a geographical and an urban analysis on Historic Cairo to understand its urban logic, its development and its evolution through the different centuries. After identifying its nowadays conservation problems, a critical analysis has been made of the recent urban rehabilitation studies and projects. The third axe takes up a socioeconomic analysis of the population living in the study zone in order to highlight the crucial role of the inhabitants as actors in the rehabilitation process. In the light of the main conclusions and findings of the three axes, a proposal for a global strategy of conservation/rehabilitation is presented with a comprehensive approach, judged to be more reliable through time than the static approach of a Master plan

Then, the preference is particulary given to the cathedrals built in Northern gothic style of the 13th century. The architects restore the churches according to those models and sometimes they do it to the detriment of the respect of their archeological authenticity. In fact, as they want to achieve and to restore them as they should be, they transmute them into real "objets d'art". Simultaneously, the liturgical reorganization and the signifiant increase of the population set the upheaval of their architecture as well as of their decor. Full textVery present on archaeological sites, the vestiges of earthen architecture are arousing a growing interest, for the scientific community, for the authorities in charge of heritage protection, for the local populations and for the general public, fan of cultural tourism. More and more projects for study, conservation and enhancement of earthen architecture in archaeological context are emerging in the world, with a view to contributing to local and territorial development. These projects involve multiple skills, borrowing in particular from the disciplines of archeology, of architecture, of heritage conservation, and from the field of heritage valorisation. Specialists in each field are invited to collaborate on projects that are more numerous and more complex, integrating the inputs and expectations of very diverse stakeholders, in a holistic and contextualized approach to heritage management (Agnew, Bridgland 2006).The conditions governing these new collaborations are studied in depth in this thesis, in order to analyze the interdisciplinary challenges and the resulting training issues. We make the hypothesis that the links between the various actors involved in the archaeological heritage generate more specific training prospects, and even the emergence of new trades at the crossroads and interfaces of the disciplines, which would better meet current expectations with regard to this heritage. The research is based on field surveys and stakeholder meetings realized over the long term (fifteen years of scientific and professional practice), at five main sites and twelve reference sites, mainly in Asia, but also in Africa and in Latin America. An analysis grid allows to compare the practices observed on the field with the international recommendations in terms of study, conservation and valorisation of the archaeological heritage built with earth. These recommendations are based on a corpus of reference publications, international charters and declarations, conferences on earthen architecture and international programs on this theme. The results of the comparative analysis lead us to make methodological proposals and to formulate guidelines for more specific training programs. In this way, we wish to contribute to the new research and training dynamics that are set up around the earthen archaeological heritage and its contribution to local development

Full textThe purpose of our thesis is to contribute to the study and research of the creation of an Egyptian film library. The study combines the structural elements that characterize the film heritage in general and that of Egypt in particular. The history, the richness of this heritage and its development in the Arab world are studied in light of the audiovisual hegemony of our times and to other film libraries/archives around the world. Many questions were raised, such as: What policies and measures must be taken to safeguard this heritage, to valorize it, to transmit it and to make it accessible to all audiences? How can we use new digital technologies and computers to achieve our objectives? That is what the different phases of our study and research is analyzing and confronting with the emergence of a growing cultural biodiversity. We also emphasize the uniqueness of the film heritage, both in its print and audiovisual form and its content: political and cultural, not to mention its transmission now associated with all audiovisual media present in our everyday lives. The research studied the film industry in Egypt, its development and its comparison to other similar industries in developed and undeveloped countries. We sought to analyze from the rich experiences of education the main points, and the significant achievements that may be applicable to a study for the creation of the Egyptian film library. Annexes highlight the efforts to collect comparative data obtained during the visits of four countries, which are Sweden, France, Canada, and Thailand. This study of activities and services developed for the valorization of cinematographic heritage was carried out taking into consideration the junction between the industrial structures of cinema in each country, their archives services, and the organization of film libraries. The study has focused on developing an appropriate methodology taking into consideration the specific aspects of the film: physico-chemical, technical and cultural

Full textNowadays, Angkorian statues are world renowned. Their fame being triggered in the early 20th century with the birth of archaeology, the creation of museums and the implementation of conservation and restoration techniques in Cambodia. These practices and structures spread throughout the country during the establishment of the French protectorate. This culminated in the creation of an institution of scientific research: The Ecole Française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO) and its dependent Conservation d’Angkor created in 1908. The sculptures found in the ruins of Angkor temples were initially brought together, creating a corpus of deposits, in which artifacts were placed into various collections within the country and abroad. Following decolonization, responsibility for the collections was returned to Cambodia. This hand over was underpinned by the legacy of institutions created under the French protectorate, in particular the National Museum. At the same time, Cambodia arranged the sustainability of EFEO work in Angkor. The Civil War that afflicted the country in the late 70’s brutally interrupted the development of national and French institutions for the management of Cambodian heritage. The struggle to emerge from this conflict furthered the wide spread looting of many precious artefacts. Cambodia had to find solutions to prevent this ongoing problem, and to retrieve its stolen artworks. The country received International help to support post-conflict reconstruction. This assistance also involved in the field of heritage management of Angkor and its sculptures, and the creation of new venues for their exhibition. The change in the political landscape of Cambodia throughout the 20th and early 21th century has heavily influenced the evolution of conservation, restoration, and diffusion practices applied to Angkorian statues

Full textThe French law of 4 August 1962 raised for the first time the question of the protection of the historic areas, its three fundamental objectives being: safeguarding city centres of a historic, artistic and cultural importance; rendering previously uninhabitable lodging habitable, and; establishing financial incentives. At the time, four hundred cities were deemed worthy of protection. Today, less than 98 areas have been classified as "secteurs sauvegardés". This amount ought not be considered negligible. Numerous steps have been taken towards the safeguarding of the urban heritage, but this evolution has been slow and contradictory. The objective of this work is to shed light on the conceptions of heritage prevalent at the time, their practical implementation, the weaknesses and the strengths thereof via a historical analysis of the first generation "secteurs sauvegardés". The finding emanating from this research will aid in identifying appropriate policy for today’s safeguard and recognition of historic centres

Full textThis doctoral thesis on epistemology of conservation is a philosophical update of the conceptual model defined by Alois Riegl in his book on The Modern Cult of Monuments. The first part presents the model and its riddle in order to perform this aggiornamento. The second part describes the paradigm adopted by the first heritage communities between the two world wars in their attempt to resolve it. The third part introduces the concepts that connect their paradigm with the present world and formulate the riddle challenging current professionals. The author proves the historic continuity of the heritage institution from A. Riegl to our days. By examining the archives of the International Committee on Intellectual Cooperation (ICIC), he demonstrates that the UN and UNESCO didn't create the heritage networks that we know today but that they originate from the networks of institutions and associations organized by the League of Nations and ICIC before World War I. Philosophically, he brings to light the ontological and epistemological foundation of the heritage institutions by studying several conceptual models. He explains how structural realism can reconcile realism with constructivism, even as they seem to be opposite theories, and alson how the processus approach can unify its parts without negating the differences of nature between its objects. His thesis is that almost all of the domain can be modelized by interconnecting the points of view of all its actors. To establish this point, he answer the following questions : what is heritage ? How does its institution function ? What is its conservation funded upon ?

Full textToulouse had conserved its historical monuments between 1789 and 1913. The measures were devoted to the institutionalization and valorization of these monuments as local heritage. Not only the government and local authorities, but local scholars also committed themselves to this long project. These scholars had a significant role since the Revolutionary era in the foundation of the Museum of Toulouse (1793), organization of collections and conservation of historic monuments. Seen as the ‘second city’ of France or Europe, Toulouse should be known in the art world for its conservation practices. At the time of the organization of a national system of conservation of historical monuments, local scholars established the Archaeological Society of the South of France (1831). Their frequent conflicts with the government, local authorities and private owners of monuments started in the nineteenth century. But that situation did not prevent them from conserving some historic buildings, artworks and local memory, unlike the government, which intends to find national or universal interest in these monuments especially before the enactment of the law separating the Church and the State. With the progress of the institutionalization of cultural heritage, the valorization of local heritage reflected lesser universal interest in the art of Toulouse than local historic memory with local historic and art studies and their popular books and guides. It is even more inseparable from the birth of the idea of the ‘Rose City’, which symbolizes the characteristics of the architecture of Toulouse

Full textSaint-Louis, of Senegal, is located in the West African coast. It is a very typical town. It was the first city ever built by Europeans on the Black Continent during the XVIIth century, and inherited a town-planning and architectural heritage which is consequent, because of its diversity and originality. However, those remains of the colonial era are threatened. Nowadays, most of the buildings are in ruins or have vanished, because of economic, climatic circumstances, or because of the wearing effect of time. While the public institutions seemed to be overwhelmed by this issue, the UNESCO gave hope by listing the city in the UNESCO World Heritage. In the meantime, the local government faced reorganization, and made partnerships up in a context of decentralization. Thus, the architectural heritage faces many initiatives of restoration and promotion. It now has become the pretext of a renewed process which is visible in a spectacular way, by the rise of the tourism and the development of trade and services. Moreover, this process is not without some strain, and it even put in question the exploited heritage

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to demonstrate that Canadian heritage policies and practices emerge, at the very beginning of the century, largely as the result of a tension between the political will to construct a national identity and economic concerns that encourage the government to invest into international tourism. The following study will examine the joint actions of the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, the first and main heritage institution in Canada and of tourist organizations, particularly the Canadian Tourism Association and the Canadian Government Travel Bureau. Created in 1919, the Board holds the mandate to identify sites and important national events, which require commemoration, safeguarding and protection by the government. However, lacking financial resources, the Board's action was limited to the establishment of monuments and plaques at historical sites and to the commemoration of historical heroes and events for the country's inhabitants and tourists. Shortly after the Second World War, Canada experienced a sharp increase in tourism. These historical sites were transformed into tourist attractions, which prompted the federal government to acknowledge the problem caused by the slow degradation of the sites due to neglect. The activism of tourist organizations led to the establishment of the first Historic Sites and Monuments Act in 1953, followed by other legislation in 1955 and 1956. This study contends, then, that tourism has played a role as important as public policies in safeguarding historical architecture and in raising public awareness to heritage
