Abstract:
Many countries have their Watergate moment, a scandal that envelopes not only mystery, intrigue, and human tragedy, but also something bigger, some kind of challenge to a country’s deepest beliefs about itself. What the US journalism scholar Michael Schudson called a country’s central moral values. For New Zealand, a good case could be made that our Watergate moment was the Thomas case. Like Watergate, it revealed ugly truths about corruption within some of our most respected institutions, and investigative journalism played a central role. Like Watergate, it was also a collective loss of innocence, and opened a very deep wound.

Abstract:
Abstract After first developing a taxonomy of intermedial prose performance based on distinctions in how an audience member or user experiences the work phenomenologically, this essay offers a performance history of some unusual translations, adaptations and intermedial responses to Samuel Beckett’s novel How It Is. Examples range widely across media, from the audio recordings of Patrick Magee to the experimental jazz records of Michael Mantler, and from the recent stage work of Gare St Lazare to the art installation of Mirosław Bałka. Such works reflect the experimental character of the novel itself, forcing a reconsideration of the discourse of the ‘unperformable.’

Abstract:
The years 1994–97 are marked by a plethora of anniversaries. In 1845 Michael Faraday discovered rotation of the plane of polarization of light in a magnetic field, now known as the ‘Faraday effect’. The first wireless communication was transmitted on 14 August 1894 by Oliver Lodge at a meeting of the British Association in Oxford. This message, sent from the old Clarendon Laboratory to the University Museum, was the first demonstration of the transmission of information by radio using the Morse code, well before the work of Marconi. The centenary was marked by a lecture in Oxford by Peter Rowlands, the author (with J. Patrick Wilson) of Oliver Lodge and the invention of radio .
