Abstract:
One of the most interesting of the myths concerning the migration to the West of those Trojan heroes who survived the destruction of their city is that of Antenor and his sons. That Antenor and his family received the embassy of the Greeks, saved them from attack by a group of Trojans and consistently urged peace and the return of Helen is already established in Homer. The consequent decision of the Greeks to spare the Antenorids at the sack of Troy is almost certainly present in the epic cycle. Somewhat later, two further traditions emerge: first the claim that Troy was betrayed by the Antenorids; second, that Antenor and various of his sons travelled overseas and settled in distant lands, notably Cyrene in Libya and Patavium in the Veneto. For anyone concerned with the development of the myth, it is therefore deeply frustrating that so little should remain of what must have been a crucial text: the Antenoridae of Sophocles. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that there is far more to be known about this play than has hitherto been perceived.

Abstract:
AbstractBadgers can gather huge quantities of organic material to build their nests for winter time and to rear their cubs. Moreover, badger burrows (setts) are characterized by specific microclimate with quite stable temperature and humidity. Their fauna is poorly studied, especially in respect of saprobiontic Uropodina mites. In 2018–2019, we monitored 94 badger setts to search for nest material that had been thrown away during cleaning of the chambers after mating and winter sleep. In the collected material from 32 badger nests, we found 413 Uropodina mites of 16 species, in various stages of development (adults, protonymphs, and deutonymphs). The community was dominated by three mite species: Trematura patavina (22.5%, n = 93), Oodinychus ovalis (17.2%, n = 71), and Olodiscus minima (15.5%, n = 64). Other nidicolous—i.e., nest-dwelling—species included: Nenteria oudemansi (14.8%, n = 61), Phaulodiaspis borealis (7.0%, n = 29), Phaulodiaspis rackei (4.6%, n = 19), Uroseius hunzikeri (1.7%, n = 7), Uropoda orbicularis (1.5%, n = 6), and Apionoseius infirmus (1.0%, n = 4). The most frequent species were: Oodinychus ovalis (62.5%, 20 nests), N. oudemansi (46.9%, 15 nests), and Olodiscus minima (40.6%, 13 nests). Detrended correspondence analysis indicated that the Uropodina community from badger nests differed from that of mole nests, studied earlier. In setts, the Uropodina community included T. patavina and N. oudemansi, which were for the first time recorded from underground badger nests. This is the first record of N. oudemansi from Poland.

Full text
Abstract:
Common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior (L.) Descourt.) was introduced to Europe from North America during the nineteenth century. Since the early 1990s, it has become the most widespread and most important allergenic weed in Hungary. In July 1999, during the annual survey of fungal diseases of ragweed in Hungary, plants exhibiting irregular brown spots surrounded by yellowish halos with small black spherical bodies on the upper surface of leaves, especially along the vessels, were collected from three roadside sites. Light microscopy revealed intracellular hyphae in the cells of leaf tissues, including the vessels, and perithecia (186 to 262 μm in diameter) containing paraphyses and asci (93 × 15 μm) with eight hyaline, unicellular ascospores (14 × 7.5 μm). Hyphae also were observed in asymptomatic leaf tissues and the petioles of infected plants. Mature perithecia commonly found in the necrotic spots also were present in asymptomatic, green leaf tissues. Based on the literature (1,2) and on the morphological examination of two herbarium specimens, BPI 636220 and BPI 636225, borrowed from the U.S. National Fungus Collection, the fungus was identified as Phyllachora ambrosiae (Berk. & M.A. Curtis) Sacc., a holobiotrophic pathogen of ragweed in North and South America. This is the first report of P. ambrosiae on ragweed in Europe. To confirm pathogenicity, leaves of five potted ragweed plants, grown from seed in pots, were inoculated with 0.1 ml of an aqueous suspension containing 5 × 105 ascospores per ml. Inoculated plants were placed in a moist chamber for 48 h and kept in the greenhouse at 20 to 25°C. Noninoculated plants served as controls. Two weeks after inoculation, yellowish spots, which later became brown and necrotic, and perithecia appeared on each of the inoculated leaves. Infected leaves died 3 to 4 weeks after inoculation. Symptoms were similar to those seen in the field. The fungus in tissues of inoculated plants was morphologically identical to the original fungus on plants with spontaneous infections. Control plants did not develop symptoms. To determine the distribution of P. ambrosiae in Hungary, a total of 500 ragweed plants were collected at random from 21 locations in all regions of the country between August and October 1999. Symptoms characteristic of P. ambrosiae infections and perithecia of the fungus were found in 92% of all 500 collected plants. From mid-September, all ragweed plants examined had dead leaves and inflorescences. Perithecia of P. ambrosiae were found in leaves, stems, and flowers. References: (1) P. A. Saccardo. 1883. Feau, N., and L. Bernier. "First Report of Shining Willow as a Host Plant for Septoria musiva." Plant Disease 88, no. 7 (July 2004): 770. http://dx.doi.org/10.1094/pdis.2004.88.7.770b.

Full text
Abstract:
During the summer of 2001, leaf spots resembling those caused by Septoria musiva Peck. were observed on shining willow (Salix lucida Mühl. subsp. lucida) at Leclerville, Québec, Canada (46°34′19″N,71°59′35″W). Affected leaves had brown, necrotic leaf spots (>5mm in diameter) surrounded by a darker brown halo. Conidia were cylindrical, straight to curved with 1 to 4 septa, 28 to 54 × 3.5 to 4 μm, and were produced in pycnidia located on the abaxial surface in the center of the leaf spots. The causal agent of this disease was successfully isolated by germinating the conidia on corn meal agar that was supplemented with streptomycin (50mg/ml) and chloramphenicol (300mg/ml) and followed with the transfer of the germinated conidia to potato dextrose agar. Leaf symptoms and morphology matched those of S. musiva, the cause of leaf spot and stem canker of hybrid poplars in North America (2,4). The internal transcribed spacers and the 5.8S portion of the rDNA were amplified using PCR with the ITS1 (5′-TCC GTA GGT GAA CCT GCG G-3′) and ITS2 (5′-GCT GCG TTC TTC ATC GAT GC-3′) primer pair on total genomic DNA extracted from a pure culture of the pathogen. The rDNA sequence obtained (GenBank Accession No. AY555277) had 100% identity at 506 base positions with the ITS1, 5.8S, and ITS2 of three S. musiva isolates from Québec and one from Wisconsin (GenBank Accession Nos. AY549464 to AY549467). To test for pathogenicity, excised leaf disks from plants propagated by softwood cuttings of the source plant and from one hybrid poplar clone (Populus maximowiczii × P. xjackii) were inoculated with 3 μl of a suspension of ground mycelium or sterile water (control). Disks were placed in a 24-well tissue culture plate with 1 ml of distilled water per well and incubated in a growth room maintained at 22°C with a 16-h photoperiod. After 1 month, symptoms were similar to those previously observed. Isolates collected from shining willow or hybrid poplar were able to induce S. musiva leaf spot symptoms on leaf disks excised from shining willow or the hybrid poplar clone. From symptomatic leaf disks, S. musiva was consistently reisolated. To our knowledge, this is the first report of S. musiva on a member of the genus Salix. S. didyma, S. salicicola, and S. salicina have been reported from leaves of species of Salix (1,3). Only a vague morphological description of S. didyma was found (3). Moreover, conidia of S. salicicola (20 to 50 × 2.5 to 3.5 μm) and S. salicina (40 to 60 μm long, unspecified width) overlap dimensions of S. musiva conidia (1). There is a need to reexamine the relationships between these species of Septoria. Evidently, the complete host range of S. musiva is not yet known. References: (1) L. Lanier et al. Abstract:
Periodo: Principado (27 a. C. – 284 d. C.) ABSTRACTThe Roman institution of the domicilium turns the subject into a resident. It usually designates the place of prolonged residence of the incola or inhabitant who has emigrated to a community, as opposed to the municeps. Therefore, it is a legal link between the city and the person who emigrates there. As opposed to the expression of the origo in epigraphic texts, which is very common, the manifestation of the domicile occurs only exceptionally, in view of the scant number of surviving references, and its enunciation is very similar to that which indicates provenance. Abstract:
Abstract This paper deals with the analysis of the ancient road network around the city of Padua, attempts to reconstruct its morphology and to define its genesis and development between the second Iron Age and Late Antiquity (6th/5th cent. BC to 6th cent. AD). The study follows a methodological approach that today we define as „archaeomorphological“, first proposed by E. Vion in the late 1980s. By applying this methodology to the Paduan territory, it was possible to identify a series of routes of probable ancient origin radially converging toward the center of Roman Patavium, and linking it to other urban centers in the region and to the minor centers located within its ager. The presence of Iron Age settlements along the path of many of these routes suggests that the development of such a road network likely begins in pre-Roman times, which also highlights the ancient strategic importance of Padua and its territory as a fundamental junction between the center and the North-East of the Italian peninsula. On the other hand, the Roman road network somehow survived into the Late Antiqueand Early Medieval times, always influencing the distribution of settlements and the orientation of churches, until it was for the greater part restored by the Commune of Padua over the 13th century.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
[first paragraph of article]Galileo Galilei (1564–1642), professor of mathematics at the University of Padua from 1592 to 1610, was a pillar in the history of our University and a symbol of freedom for research and teaching, well stated in the university motto ‘‘Universa Universis Patavina Libertas’’ (Total freedom in Padua, open to all the world). He invented the experimental method, based on evidence and calculation (‘‘science is measure’’) and was able, by using the telescope, to confirm the Copernican heliocentric theory, a challenge to the Bible. Bertrand Russell (1872–1970), in his book ‘‘The Problems of Philosophy’’ stated: ‘‘Almost everything that distinguishes modern world from earlier centuries is attributable to science, which achieved the most spectacular triumphs in the seventeenth century. Together with Harvey, Newton and Keplero, Galileo was a protagonist of this scientific revolution in the late Renaissance’’.

Abstract:
Plenitude do poder. Filosofia política. ABSTRACT In a large part of the Article 68 of the Book one of his Status et Planctus Ecclesiae, Alvarus Pelagius O. Min. (c. 1270-1349) refutes five propositions, having political implications, attributed to Marsilius Patavinus (1280-1342). In this study, we analyze the refutation of these propositions made by Alvarus, comparing, on the one hand, with the texts, really, written by Marsilius, which are in his book entitled Defensor pacis (1324), and on the other hand, quoting Alvarus’ text with the Epistula ad quosdam cardinales, also written by the mentioned Franciscan friar two years before. From this study, resulted the following conclusions: 1 – Without to do any mention in the Article 68, the principal Alvarus’ source was the referred Epistula. 2 – Considering the two texts written by Fr. Alvarus, according the doctrinal aspect, they are essentially equal. 3 – In both texts we could see that Alvarus not had in his hands the Defensor Pacis, having used the thesis which the censors of this book imputed to Marsilius in 1327, when this book was condemned as heretic by the Pope John XXII. KEY WORDS – Alvarus Pelagius. Marsilius of Padua. Plentitude of power. Political philosophy.
