Anagnostopoulou, Elena. Voice, manners, and results in adjectival passives. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198767886.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
The chapter argues that there are two functional heads in the VP domain: a little v head introducing an event and Voice introducing the external argument. Evidence is drawn from adjectival passives, which split into several types that can be described in terms of this architecture. The chapter explores the interaction between Voice, v, and manner vs. result interpretations of verbal meaning in resultant state vs. target state adjectival passives. First, a summary is given of the main arguments for postulating a v head and a Voice head in adjectival passives. The chapter then focuses on the absence of Voice in target state adjectival passives. New evidence for the absence of Voice comes from two empirical domains: constraints on verb classes that are allowed and disallowed to form target state adjectival passives and a phenomenon of coercion of manner, instrument-based denominal verbs into result verbs in target state adjectival passives.

Schäfer, Florian. Romance and Greek medio-passives and the typology of Voice. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198767886.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
The chapter develops a typology of Voice heads as they are involved in the formation of different types of passives in the Romance languages and in Greek. The chapter first explains how Romance languages can have two morphologically different passives: a canonical periphrastic passive formed with the verbal participle and an auxiliary, and an analytic medio-passive which involves the active verb and a reflexive SE-morpheme. Next, the chapter provides an explanation as to why medio-passives are morphologically syncretic with so-called marked anticausatives both in Romance as well as in Greek. Finally, it develops an explanation as to why Romance medio-passives differ from canonical passives in that only the latter license by-phrases and why the Greek medio-passive does not show this restriction.

Wurmbrand, Susi, and Koji Shimamura. The features of the voice domain: actives, passives, and restructuring. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198767886.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter provides an in-depth characterization of the organization and featural make-up of the voice domain. Using restructuring as a probe into the composition of the voice domain, several properties are revealed which provide new or additional support for a number of voice-related assumptions, such as a split voice domain consisting of VoiceP and vP. It is suggested that the heads of the voice domain come with two sets of features, v/Voice-features and ϕ‎-features, where the former encode differences such as active and passive, as well as specific flavors of the argument or event introducing heads, and the latter identify a DP (the DP valuing the ϕ‎-features) as an argument of the particular voice head. The chapter proposes detailed structures for passive and restructuring, including morphological spell-out rules for the heads of the voice domain in several languages (Acehnese, Chamorro, Isbukun Bunun, German, Japanese, Mayrinax Atayal, Norwegian, and Takibakha Bunun).

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter argues that despite formal resemblances, Latin perfect tense BE-periphrases of the type amatus sum ‘I was loved’ are not the historical source of Romance present tense passives like Italian sono amato and French je suis aimé (both meaning ‘I am (being) loved’). Evidence comes from the observation that Late Latin has a very strong preference for the head-final order ‘past participle–BE’, which goes against the otherwise general tendency for the language to move towards a strictly head-initial TP. As an alternative, I propose that amatus sum perfects disappeared from the language, and that the analytic present tense passives are new formations. The Late Latin preference for head-final BE-periphrases is explained in terms of phonological weakening of the auxiliary. I conclude by comparing this phonological process to the oft-discussed grammaticalization of HAVE (habeo) as a marker of futurity.
