Abstract:
Despite a strong commitment to collaborate, partners may encounter conflict as they work together. Even when partners agree on goals and a common agenda, conflicts still may arise over the process they will use to search for agreements, over their relationships and threats to identity, over values or because of power differences or over how agreements will be implemented. In this chapter, partnership level factors that generate conflict are explored, including why some conflicts have long histories and are deeply rooted within fields. Several actions that partners can take to address conflicts are suggested such as acknowledging critical identities, reframing, de-escalation techniques, mediation, and shuttle diplomacy. The role of conflict and how it was handled in each of our three main cases is explored.

Gunter, Barrie. The Study of Online Relationships and Dating. Edited by William H. Dutton. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199589074.013.0009.

Abstract:
This chapter, which investigates a range of evidence about online dating behaviour, and a synthesis of approaches to research in this area, also evaluates the nature of the market and the experiences of those who have engaged in online dating. Further issues linked with patterns of online self-disclosure and self-presentation, and concerns about deception in online dating, are then assessed. Corporate data have indicated that the online dating business is mostly on an upward trajectory. Data show greater age difference tolerance of online daters and a willingness to adopt a broader selection of partners compared with offline-only daters. Many online dating site users increasingly fail to be fully engaged by sites that offer search opportunities for partner matches using check-box profiling. The issues of deception and trust in relation to personal profiles have been regarded as problematic factors that could cause tension among online daters.

Abstract:
Even more than most colleges, fundamentalist schools between the 1920s and 1950s tried hard to supervise student behavior. With strict rules against drinking, smoking, and sexual relationships, many institutions found enforcement to be a challenge. This was especially true in the realm of sexuality and dating. Students, families, and the institutions themselves often viewed college as the proper place to meet potential marriage partners. Evangelical institutions of higher education wrestled with challenge of allowing students to search for future spouses without allowing them to take their courtship too far. This chapter looks at the ways administrators hoped to guide and control student behavior, especially in the realm of sex and dating. It also explores the ways students responded to those efforts. Some students appreciated the strict guidelines, while others worked hard to find ways to break the rules.

Abstract:
Many women throughout the world have suffered the abuse of an intimate partner in a dating, common-law, or marital relationship. Focusing on data collected over many years, this chapter examines some of the contours of how women of faith talk about their experience of domestic violence and their search for practical and spiritual resources in its aftermath. The chapter examines issues of safety, fear, guilt, uncertainty, forgiveness, and creating peace after violence has shattered the family. Both the challenges facing women of faith and the challenges facing those who assist them are discussed. In addition, a variety of religious practices and beliefs that enhance a woman’s search for healing and wholeness are discussed.

Tinker-Salas, Miguel. Venezuela. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/wentk/9780199783298.001.0001.

Abstract:
Among the top ten oil exporters in the world and a founding member of OPEC, Venezuela currently supplies 11 percent of U.S. crude oil imports. But when the country elected the fiery populist politician Hugo Chavez in 1998, tensions rose with this key trading partner and relations have been strained ever since. In this concise, accessible introduction, Miguel Tinker-Salas--a native of Venezuela who has written extensively about the country--takes a broadly chronological approach to the history of Venezuela, but keeps oil and its effects on the country’s politics, economy, culture, and international relations a central focus. After an introductory section that discusses the legacy of Spanish colonialism, Tinker-Salas explores the “The Era of the Gusher,” a period which began with the discovery of oil in the early 1910s, encompassed the mid-century development and nationalization of the industry, and ended with a change of government in 1989 in response to widespread protests. Tinker-Salas also provides a detailed discussion of Hugo Chavez--his rise to power, his domestic, political and economic policies, and his high-profile forays into international relations. Arranged in helpful question-and-answer format that allows readers to search topics of particular interest, the book covers such questions as: Who is Simón Bolívar and why is he called the George Washington of Latin America? How did the discovery of oil change Venezuela’s relationship to the U.S.? What forces were behind the coups of 1992? Does Chavez really want to be president for life? How does Venezuela interact with China, Russia, and Iran? And much more. Convenient, engaging, and written by a leading expert on the country, Venezuela: What Everyone Needs to Know offers a lively look at an increasingly important player on the world stage.
