Abstract:
In this study, the participants&rsquo
perceptions about Information Technologies Certificate Program which was based on synchronous and asynchronous communication methods over the Internet offered by cooperation of Middle East Technical University, Computer Engineering Department and Continuing Education Center were examined. This online certificate program started in May 1998. The program includes eight fundamental courses of Computer Engineering Department and comprised of four semesters lasting nine months. The courses in the program are given by instructors of Computer Engineering Department. In the study, participants&rsquo
perceptions about Information Technologies Certificate Program in regard to four major items which were preferences, course effectiveness, learner support and computer mediated communication were examined and the study included the 3rd, 4th and 5th programs&rsquo
participants who attended the certificate programs. The data were collected by using online survey at the end of the each term of programs and analyzed by using descriptive statistical analyzing methods. The results showed that there was a parallelism between participants&rsquo
perceptions and aims of Information Technologies Certificate Program. It was revealed that the courses in the program were effective in general and majority of the participants found learner support satisfied. The results showed that the participants were satisfied with computer mediated communication provided in program, however, the chat sessions were not beneficial enough. In addition to these, participants made important suggestions to improve the program.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine participants&rsquo
civic engagement behavior of a non-formal training on democracy and human rights through the case of Toplum Gö

llü
leri Vakfi (TOG) Democracy and Human Rights Project. In order to achieve this, a survey was conducted to the participants who attended the trainer&rsquo
s training of TOG&rsquo
s Democracy and Human Rights Project. The entire population who completed the trainer&rsquo
s training at that time consisted of 154 TOG volunteers, and all population were aimed to be reached for data collection. The study initiated with a needs analysis study to explore what elements were needed to be evaluated in the survey with regard to TOG&rsquo
s administrative group. Next, based on those findings, literature review on civic engagement and the indicators adapted by the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) a questionnaire containing both open-ended and close-ended items was developed to measure participants&rsquo
civic behaviors. The data were collected through an online survey tool, Survey Monkey, an accessable number of population (N=56) was reached and a return rate of 43.4 percent was enhanced. The results revealed that participants of trainer&rsquo
s training of TOG&rsquo
s Democracy and Human Rights Project could be regarded as active citizens who engage in civil society, participate in political actions, pay attention to current events and follow the news regularly. In addition, findings showed that there was a decrease in the frequencies in terms of participation in the civil society in time. Lastly, implications for further research on participants&rsquo
civic participation from non-formal education perspectives are highlighted.

Richards, Russell. "Responsive environments : participants and protagonists." Thesis, Southampton Solent University, 2017. http://ssudl.solent.ac.uk/3805/.

Full text
Abstract:
This PhD research project builds on thirteen years of enquiries as an academic practitioner, developing/critiquing interactive audio-visuals. This approach interweaves theory and practice so that both build on each other. It responds to the need for principles that inter-relate people, digital technologies and environments. The concept of “responsive environments” (RE) is offered as a starting point for the development of principles focusing on people within these environments. A responsive environment is “responsive” in the sense that some form of computer technologies are present and sensing/recording/reacting to people, and an “environment” in the sense that these activities are located in a place and that that place matters in terms of setting the scene, housing the technology and providing a context for the users/visitors. Common themes were extracted from the literature review to draw together previous and, for the most part, separate attempts at theory/practice relating to RE. These themes were complemented by research into contemporaneous activities in the areas of Augmented Reality, Mixed Reality and Locative Media to provided enhancements to the development of three practice projects. These enhancements together with the incorporation of Moore and Anderson’s concepts of “patient”, “actor”, “reciprocator” and “referee” as roles available to those encountering REs led to specific research questions regarding roles, positions, opportunities for repurposing content, learning experiences, the use of sound, visuals and presence, and the assessment of values represented in and through a responsive environment. In each case these questions shift the emphasis of the research towards the experiencing of REs and what they enable rather than the technologies used only. The use of Schwartz and Halegoua’s concept of the “spatial self” further focuses attention of the value in connecting digital expression with real spaces through an RE. This has led to a proposed conceptual framework and principles of practice that can be applied in the area of study of RE to nurture opportunities for participants and protagonists. The latter term is proposed as a means of acknowledging opportunities to make content/concepts in an RE as well as obtain and use them by participation. These opportunities are supported by both synchronous and asynchronous interactions through digital layers using online social media platforms. These platforms enable the archiving of content in a digital layer and/or possibilities for continued social interaction through a digital social layer in relation to the responsive environment. The incorporation of synchronous and asynchronous interactions through digital layers is a major contribution to the concept of REs. A further contribution is the use of the pioneering work of Gordon Pask in both the practice and theory of cybernetics as informing the concept of REs. Pask provided a formulation that expressed how content/concepts could be produced through relationships between people, computers and environments. This approach has been mirrored in other disciplines thus giving additional credence to its value. This discovery provides the impetus for further research, by academic practitioners and others, in this developing area of study.

Abstract:
Imagine a movie with skies without clouds, a video game with explosions without smoke or fire. Participating media are mandatory for realistic-looking CG scenes. Rendering participating media is therefore a widely studied research topic focusing on the simulation of light interactions within translucent objects. Unlike solid objects where the light is simply reflected over the surface, participating media also absorb and scatter light. All of these interactions create complex effects such as volumetric shadows and soft shadows. We investigate the field of real-time rendering of participating media. We propose scalable algorithms ranging from real-time performance to production quality along with efficient graphics memory management. We first introduce the concept of transmittance function maps for fast estimation of single scattering in participating media. We then extend this concept to image-based lighting using spherical transmittance. We finally introduce the volume-aware extinction map to handle the massive scenes containing numerous and highly detailed media used in movie post-production

Abstract:
Purpose: This study was developed to assess the facilitators to breastfeeding in the Pima County Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC) in order to inform programming and improve breastfeeding rates. Background: Although breastfeeding for at least six months has numerous maternal and child health benefits, and is promoted by WIC, WIC women have historically had low breastfeeding rates. Improving lower than desired breastfeeding rates in the Pima County WIC program is a priority. Methods: A paper survey was administered to participants in the Pima County WIC program who had breastfed their youngest child under 12 months of age. Results: The most frequent reported influence on the decision to breastfeed was family. Likewise, support of family or friends was the highest reported facilitator to breastfeeding continuation. The most important reason indicated for breastfeeding was infant health. The greatest barrier to breastfeeding continuation was concerns of low milk supply, followed by returning to work or school. Conclusion: The Pima County WIC program can build upon the ways they support breastfeeding by incorporating family in education efforts and identifying what will facilitate participants' breastfeeding goals and participants overcome barriers to breastfeeding.

The objective of this work is to present persistency models. The probabilities of remaining in a Insurance and Pension company portfolio will be studied in a aggregate way, in this way it is possible to develop another results such as profitability, even though, there is poor data, what turns impossible to build multiple decrement tables. The possible lapses causes will be evaluated according to the plan. The models development is based on triangular data, this technique is usual on claims reserving.

Almuhanna, Manal. "Participants' perceptions of MOOCs in Saudi Arabia." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2018. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/21573/.

Full text
Abstract:
Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), which are typically short courses offered free to anyone with Internet access, provide opportunities for online education regardless of participants’ gender, professional status, qualifications, age or location. Since the international introduction of MOOCs in 2008 in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States, they have attracted public attention and online learning researchers have already made headway in investigating their essence. However, although MOOCs were introduced to Saudi Arabia in 2013 and have gained the attention of Saudi government sectors such as the Ministry of Labour, little research has been published on the effects of MOOCs in the country. Therefore, this research, to the best of my knowledge, is the first to explore Saudi participants’ perceptions of MOOCs. As a Saudi teaching assistant at King Saud University in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), I can see a clear trend in Saudi education towards online learning. The use of online learning is perhaps one of the most important current developments in the education system (Algahtani, 2011) and it would be difficult to dispense with this kind of learning now. Therefore, after consulting with several Saudi professors in educational technology, I concluded that investigating Saudi participants’ perceptions of MOOCs could make a significant contribution to the evolution of Saudi education generally and online learning in particular, thus contributing to improving Saudi people’s culture. This study aimed to explore the cultural implications of MOOCs for Saudi participants with the main objective being to identify Saudi participants’ perceptions of MOOCs, specifically the impact of MOOCs on participants’ lives, their pedagogy and learning design, and their social environment. The data was collected using mixed methods through conducting surveys, observation, and interviews with participants. Consequently, participants’ perceptions are linked to the literature review and discussed in detail in relation to the Saudi Arabian context. Furthermore, recommendations are offered on how to maximise the potential of MOOCs alongside suggestions for further research. The conclusion of this study asserts that MOOCs are widely used by Saudi participants, especially women, due to MOOC flexibility and their contribution to the development of educational cultures. MOOCs contributed to improving participants’ knowledge and personalities, as well as developing their educational and professional lives; however, the study revealed that the benefits participants gained from MOOCs varied depending on their positions and aims. In addition, the findings showed that participants’ views regarding the effectiveness of the pedagogy and learning design of MOOCs differed. Moreover, the study highlighted several factors that affected participants’ learning in terms of course design and the rules of participation, and some insights are provided that could address the concerns participants raised. MOOCs can contribute to attaining Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 by providing courses that focus on educating Saudis and imparting the skills required for future employment and for effectively carrying out the jobs recently allocated to citizens.

Full text
Abstract:
The study of self-perceptions in the physical domain is still an underdeveloped area of research in many countries, such as Portugal. This issue is of even further interest when assessed in groups with physical impairment, whose perceptions may be formulated in different ways on different criteria as a result of their disability. The extent to which exercise and sport participation influences the development of self-perception and perceived competence in people with disabilities is also an unexplored area of research. There is a body of literature on disability and sport participation indicating that there is a great potential for involvement in sport to improve mental well-being in people with disabilities (Sherrill, 1997). Further research and wellcontrolled studies are required to support this presumption. The general aim of the present research is to develop a better understanding of the importance of exercise and sport participation in the development of self-perceptions in groups with physical disability. The present thesis involves a sequence of three studies focusing on the construction of self-perceptions in different Portuguese population groups with and without disability using a Portuguese version of the Physical Self-Perception Profile - PSPP-P (Fonseca, Fox, & Almeida, 1995). The use of this instrument in groups with physical disability requires statistical support for its validity and reliability in the Portuguese population that has not been totally achieved yet. The pattern of mean score values presented in this study was similar to the one found in the development of the instrument with USA youth population. Study one provided support for the hierarchical organization of the self-perceptions in the physical domain as well as for gender differences with males scoring higher mean score values than females for all PSPP sub-domains as well as for GSE. However, structural equation modelling (SEM) did not provide support for the original four sub-domain factor model (Fox & Corbin, 1989) and a new three sub-domain factor model was proposed combining Condition and Sport items into a new sub-dimension, the Physical Confidence. Study two provided some critical information about PSPPp structure when used in groups with physical disability. Limited support was found for the existence of PSW as a mediator. The hierarchical structure exists among PSPPp sub-scales but not with GSE. An unusual lack of relationship between Physical Self-Worth and Global Self-Esteem was found suggesting that self-perceptions in the physical domain develop in an alternative way to the one some often confirmed for different age groups without disability. This lack of relationship was confirmed in the qualitative study which identified Body Attractiveness and individual attitudes towards the body including defensiveness and denial, and growth through adversity as some of the major mechanisms involved in the process.

Abstract:
Top level sport for people with a disability is becoming more competitive, creating an environment in which the rewards for success and the disappointments associated with failure are often great. These are factors which clearly have the potential to place extreme psychological demands on sport performers with a disability. However, few investigations have specifically examined how athletes with a disability respond in highly stressful sporting situations. This thesis, therefore, reports 3 separate studies to investigate stress and coping in wheelchair sport participants. Study 1 examined pre-competition temporal patterning of anxiety and self-confidence in 103 wheelchair sport participants at 3 time periods preceding competition (1 week, 2 hours and 30 minutes before). The findings suggested that wheelchair sport participants show a similar pre-competition anxiety response to non-disabled sport participants. However, there were some differences, particularly in the reduction in self-confidence immediately prior to competition. The purpose of Study 2, therefore, was to explore possible: reasons as to why self-confidence may decrease in wheelchair sport participants" immediately prior to competition. Specifically, Study 2 considered the influence of disability status (i.e., possessing and not possessing a disability) on appraisal of a specific important competitive event, and how appraisal may be influenced by various psychosocial factors. The sample comprised of 75 wheelchair and 44 able-bodied sport participants. The findings showed that wheelchair and able-bodied sport participants had similar psychosocial resources and appraisal patterns; however, different factors predicted an important competitive event as challenging. Study 3 explored this further by investigating, via in-depth qualitative interviews, the sources of stress and coping responses in 10 elite male wheelchair basketball players. Qualitative and quantitative methods were employed in combination to enable examination of stress source characteristics (degree of challenge, threat, harm, severity, control and frequency) and coping details (effectiveness and frequency). Whilst many of the findings were similar to those previously reported for elite able-bodied figure skaters, there were some differences. These differences appeared to relate to various disability factors and also the fact that the study was unique in examining team sport participants. Furthermore, the unique nature of the study obtaining information on stress source characteristics, and effectiveness and extent of use of coping strategies, proved to be extremely useful in gaining a more in-depth understanding of the complex stress-coping process. Finally, the findings from the three studies reported in this thesis enabled a model of stress and coping for wheelchair sport participants to be developed. In summary, the studies presented used a range of methodologies to enable an in-depth understanding of stress and coping in wheelchair sport, whilst simultaneously supporting and extending previous research in the sport domain.

Abstract:
College enrollment and graduation rates for African Americans remain lower than enrollment and graduation rates for middle and upper-class White students. The lower enrollment and graduation rates have an effect on the number of African American students who pursue the Ph.D. and other research doctorate degrees. In order to increase the number of African Americans and other underrepresented students in the Ph.D. pipeline, the United States Congress passed legislation that created the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program (McNair Scholars Program) in the mid-1980s. The purpose of the McNair Scholars Program is to prepare college students for doctoral studies and careers in academia through involvement in summer research internships and other scholarly activities. One way in which this program may prepare students is through the development of students' academic, research and social self-efficacy. To date, however little research has been conducted to see if the McNair Scholars Program has an effect on African American students' levels of self-efficacy. The purpose of this study was to compare levels of academic, research and social self-efficacy among African American pre- and post-McNair Scholar participants. Levels of self-efficacy were analyzed by McNair participant status (pre-McNair and post-McNair), gender, college and grade point average. The study employed a national sample of African American pre- and post McNair Scholar Program participants. Data were collected using the Graduate Education Self-Efficacy Scale (GESES), a 57-item instrument designed specifically for this study. Items for the survey were developed utilizing existing literature on academic, research and social self-efficacy. Results revealed significant differences in academic, research and social self-efficacy between African American pre- and post-McNair Scholar Program participants. There were no significant differences by gender on academic, research or social self-efficacy. Neither were significant differences found by college grade level on academic or social self-efficacy. There were, however, significant differences based on college grade level on research self-efficacy. There were also significant interaction effects between gender and college grade level on academic, research and social self-efficacy. The results suggest that participating in the McNair Scholars Program raises levels of academic, research and social self-efficacy among African American college students.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to better understand marital conflict and marital satisfaction among Latina mothers in the Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) program. Latina mothers living in a marriage or in a committed relationship (n = 91) reported levels of marital conflict and marital satisfaction. Between both groups, non-HIPPY mothers reported significantly less marital satisfaction and more conflict associated with affection than HIPPY mothers. A negative correlation (r = -.495, p <.001, n = 91) indicated that more satisfaction was related to less marital conflict. Out of ten marital conflicts, religion, leisure time, drinking, and other women (outside the relationship) best explained how satisfied mothers were in their relationship with their spouse. In this study, participants who were in the HIPPY program may have more support and higher marital quality. Social service programs such as HIPPY may help families build stronger marriages. Further research on Latino/Hispanic culture and values are important when developing culturally sensitive marriage and couples education.

Kittenis, Marios D. "Event-related EEG correlations between physically isolated participants." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/29200.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an attempt to evaluate findings previously reported in the scientific literature, suggesting the presence of event-related correlations in electrical brain activity between physically isolated human participants. A series of three experimental studies has been designed and conducted using an experimental procedure and analytical methodology which remain largely constant across the three studies, so that their results can be comparable and cumulative. Each of these three experiments involves the randomly timed photic stimulation of one participant, to test the question whether event-related changes in the EEG activity of another, physically isolated (and non-stimulated) participant can be identified. An additional question investigated is whether certain variables show a relationship with any such event-related EEG correlations found between participants, as suggested in previous studies. In each of the first two studies, three groups of participants were recruited; participant pairs who knew each other well, randomly matched pairs of strangers and single participants not matched with a photically stimulated partner. In both these studies, significant differences were found in measures of evoked-alpha global field power from non-stimulated subjects in related pairs, between periods of photic stimulation of their partners and randomly sampled control periods of no stimulation. Similar effects were not found in randomly matched pairs, or in unmatched control subjects. Although these findings appear to suggest the presence of event-related correlations in brain activity between related participant pairs, the temporal characteristics of the observed changes in EEG activity in non-stimulated subjects are not entirely compatible with such an interpretation. In the final study, only related pairs of participants were recruited and a variation of the experimental paradigm was adopted in order to increase the overall sample size; no evidence of a similar effect was found in this study however. Possible interpretations of the overall findings from the three studies are finally discussed.

Alston, Adam. "Productive participants: aesthetics and politics in immersive theatre." Thesis, University of London, 2013. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.603488.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis looks at an aesthetics and politics of audience participation in immersive theatre. It asks what it means to be affected by immersive theatre as an audience member and what it means to perceive risk as a participating audience. Moreover, it considers how affect production and risk perception among participating audiences might be approached as aesthetic characteristics that are, at the same time, profoundly political. Inspired by, but departing from, the writing of political philosopher Jacques Ranciere, the argument considers whether a politics of audience participation in immersive theatre might be derived from an aesthetic core, a core that emerges from affect production and risk perception and that fundamentally impacts on how participation takes place and how participants are to take their place. Immersive theatre is initially identified as a theatre style that sUlTounds participating audiences in a coherent aesthetic world. I ask, on the one hand, what might constitute a productive participant and how such a productive participant might contribute to the coherence of an aesthetic world. On the other hand, I ask how these productive participants might also be implicated in its rupture. Drawing especially on the broad disciplinary spectrum of affect studies and risk perception research, new terminology is introduced to frame productive participation based on narcissism and entrcpreneurialism. Significantly, points of aesthetic and political alignment are charted between immersive theatre, the value system heralded under neoliberalism and the profitable production of experiences within a growmg 'experience economy'. Through analyses of work by Ray Lee, Lundahl & Seitl, Ptlllchdrunk, Shunt, Theatre Delicatessen and -Half Cut, this thesis suggests that immersive theatre's most valuable political work might be derived from an aesthetics of audience participation that frustrates such points of alignment, unearthing into an affective zone the political consequences and compromises of productive participation.

Reynolds, Linda J. "Acute post-exercise cardiovascular responses in healthy participants." Thesis, University of Gloucestershire, 2013. http://eprints.glos.ac.uk/942/.

Full text
Abstract:
The overall aim of this project was to investigate the acute cardiovascular post-exercise response in healthy individuals. The aim of the first study was to establish the within day and between day reproducibility of supine and tilt baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) utilising time (sequence) and spectral indices in 46 healthy adult males employing three repeat measures; baseline, + 60 min and + 24 h. Reproducibility was assessed by the 95% limits of agreement (LOA) to assess the extent of agreement and an alternative approach of estimating the technical error of the measurement (TEM) to assess reproducibility was also undertaken. The LOA indicated same day reproducibility was marginally better than between day reproducibility for spectral parameters while between day reproducibility was marginally better than same day reproducibility for sequence parameters with reproducibility markedly improved across all BRS outcome measures during tilt. Precision expressed by TEM for all spectral outcomes was good in both supine and tilt BRS (< 6 %) although precision was lower, but acceptable, for sequence BRS outcomes in both positions (< 11%). Thus, all BRS outcome measures and the tilt procedure were incorporated into the exercise study. The aim of the second study was to compare the response of supine and tilt BRS following a single bout of moderate intensity exercise and high intensity exercise. Further details are given in the full abstract above.

This dissertation empirically examines how demand-enhancing activities conducted by food industry participants affect retail beef steak pricing, consumer demand for ground beef, and industry concentration. It follows the journal article style and includes three self-contained chapters. Chapter 1 uses a two step hedonic model with retail scanner data of consumer beef steak purchases to determine if there are incentives to identify certain attributes and to determine what types of attributes entertain price premiums and at what levels these premiums exists. Results indicate that most branded beef steak products garnered premiums along with organic claim, religious processing claim, and premium steak cuts. Factors influencing brand equity are new brands targeting emerging consumer trends, brands with regional prominence, and those positioned as special-labels, program/breed specific, and store brands. Chapter 2 reports tests of aggregation over elementary ground beef products and estimates composite demand elasticities. Results suggest consumers differentiate ground beef according to lean percentage (70-77%, 78-84%, 85-89%, 90-95%, and 96-100%) and brand type (local/regional, national, store, and unbranded). The range in composite elasticity estimates shows the value of analyzing demand elasticity based on differentiation and not simply considering ground beef as being homogeneous. Composite elasticity estimates provide improved understanding of how consumers make decisions concerning ground beef purchases. Chapter 3 examines industry concentration for the U.S. food manufacturing sector. This study is the first to examine whether particular subsectors within the food manufacturing industry, which operate in the presence of industry-funded check-off programs such as marketing orders, are more or less concentrated than industries without such research and marketing programs. Results provide evidence to support the hypothesis that industries with demand-enhancing check-off programs have lower concentration relative to industries without these programs.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis was to estimate the value accruing to Zambian bean supply chain participants with the view to showing that value at the different stages is a function of the value addition and risk incurred at those stages. The data used in the study came from two different surveys done under the Pulse Value Chain Initiative – Zambia focusing on producers and bean traders. The surveys used structured questionnaires for both producers and traders. The producers were sampled from three principal bean producing provinces in Zambia: Lundazi, Mbala and Kalomo. The traders were sampled from the largest consumer region in the country – Lusaka – and focused on traders operating in the three principal markets in the city: Soweto; Chilenje; and Mtendere. The analyses were conducted using STATA®, employing both statistical and econometric methods. Value was defined as a function of transaction costs and value addition as well as the risks borne. In the Zambian mixed bean trade environment, where traders travel to remote locations where producers live and produce, they are seen to incur higher levels of risk and undertake higher levels of value addition – assembling the grain, bagging them and moving them from the rural areas where production occurs to the cities where customers reside. As such, it is expected that value creation and distribution would increase away from the farm. The results confirmed this expectation. The total average value created at the farm level was ZMK3,391.06/kg. However, the average value accruing to traders who only undertook wholesaling was ZMK7,405.75/kg while that accruing to traders going further down the chain to retail was ZMK9,663.56/kg. Traders who engaged in institutional trade produced an average value of ZMK8,750.75/kg. The share of total value produced accruing to producers in the producer-wholesaler-retailer chain was about 16.6 percent because of the higher value addition and risk that occur further downstream in the chain. The share of total value produced accruing to producers in the producer-wholesaler-institutional buyer chain was about 17.3 percent. The study showed that female producers’ share was not different, statistically speaking, from male producers’ value. It also showed that the average value created in thin (smaller) markets was higher than the value created in larger markets, probably because of the level of competition that occurs in the latter markets. Interestingly, the results showed that the larger the land holdings of producers, the lower the value created. This is in line with the foregoing results of size, competition and value. The study suggests that producers’ share of total value created may be enhanced by helping producers undertake specific activities that increased the value they added and reduce the risks that traders bear in their search for grain. One of such activities could be the formation of horizontal strategic alliances among producers that allowed producers to aggregate grain at particular locations in significant lots and bag them. This service would allow them to extract higher value from the exchange with traders. Any attempt to address the perceived “unfair” distribution of value along the supply chain by administrative fiat could result in higher costs to the whole supply chain and crate adverse unintended consequences for producers and the treasury.

Logistic coordination is the coordination of the activities of the logistics system participants, involved in the promotion of material, information and financial flows. Logistic coordination of the participants helps to coordinate the activities of the links of the logistics system participating in the promotion of material, information and financial flows. In logistics management, there are two types of coordination of participants: cross-functional and inter-organizational. Inter-functional coordination is concerned with the coordination of the enterprise divisions’ activities to improve the efficiency of the logistics system, and the inter-organizational logistics coordination – with streamlining, coordination of the work of partner enterprises in the integrated logistics system to achieve its goals.

Abstract:
This thesis aimed to investigate ways to conduct participatory research practices that would gain knowledge of participants' relationships and experiences with/in their physical home environment by using a design probe. Through the probe, a new approach to participatory design research was formulated. This approach gives agency to participants through elements of auto-ethnography, thus shifting the traditional power structures that often exist between participants and designers. This new type of research could yield greater intimacy and mutuality between designers and their participants. Due to this, it has the potential to be meaningful when designing for the home environment, and therefore can be used for research and design within the Internet of Things.

Full text
Abstract:
Eating unhealthy foods and eating past satiety are inappropriate behaviors that promote obesity. The ability to effectively inhibit an inappropriate behavior is a key component of cognitive restraint and its impairment has been previously linked to obesity. In this study, a Go/No-Go fMRI task was completed by a cohort of adult women that had experienced initial weight loss followed by various levels of weight regain or continued weight loss. Region of interest fMRI analysis revealed that greater total weight loss was significantly related to decreasing activation in the right inferior frontal gyrus and the right superior frontal gyrus. These results suggest that as weight loss increases fewer cognitive resources are needed in order to maintain levels of inhibitory control. This cognitive efficiency, though only partially supported by better task performance, is supported by greater exercise. An analysis of resting state patterns of correlation between task-activated regions revealed a significant correlation between the right inferior frontal gyrus and the left middle temporal gyrus. The strength of this relationship was significantly correlated with increasing total weight loss and continued weight loss over time. Cognitive restraint was also associated with this fronto-temporal correlation and provides support for cognitive efficiency. Right inferior frontal gyrus was also correlated with left inferior frontal gyrus and this relationship was positively correlated with initial weight loss suggesting that fewer neurocognitive resources were required by those who were able to achieve greater initial weight loss.

Abstract:
Class of 2017 Abstract
Objectives: To conduct a scoping review of studies involving healthcare professionals as study subjects and to describe the methods used, identify the topics researched, and describe the rationale and limitations of using healthcare professionals as subjects. Methods: The study was a scoping review of research utilizing health professionals as study subjects. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in several databases. Two investigators independently screened studies, collected data, and met to resolve discrepancies. Results: Sixty-five studies met the eligibility criteria. Forty-six percent of the studies evaluated cardiovascular events, 25% evaluated cancer, 9% examined ophthalmic events, 5% examined cognitive issues, and 17% miscellaneous topics. Of the 65 studies, 88% were prospective cohort studies. Questionnaires were utilized as the data collection method in 59 studies (91%). Physicians were the primary study subject in 30 studies (46%) and nurses in 20 studies (31%). No study included in the sample identified pharmacists as study subjects. A total of 41 studies (63%) did not list rationales or limitations to utilizing health professionals as subjects. Of the 24 studies that did discuss rationales and limitations, the most frequently cited advantage was reliable self-reporting (38%). The most common limitation to generalizability was high socioeconomic status. Conclusions: Questionnaires were the most common method used to collect data. Physicians were the most often studied health professional. High reliability of data reporting was a common rationale in using health professionals as subjects. The lack of studies utilizing pharmacists as subjects demonstrates an opportunity that should be further evaluated.

Curran, Thomas. "Psychosocial mechanisms underpinning motivation in youth sports participants." Thesis, York St John University College, 2013. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/6511/.

Full text
Abstract:
Children’s participation in youth sport is ubiquitous in UK society, yet high levels of attrition are evident in adolescence (Department for Culture, Media and Sport, 2012a). This attrition has been credited, in part, to questionable coaching behaviours that derogate children’s experiences in youth sport. Using self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985, 2000; Ryan & Deci, 2000, 2002) as a guiding framework, the purpose of this thesis was to better understand the coach-related antecedents of children’s adherence and attrition in youth sport by examining the motivational processes that contribute to their engagement versus disaffection. In study one, children’s perceptions of autonomy, competence and relatedness, or psychological need satisfaction, were examined alongside in their tendency to exhibit high levels of cognitive and affective engagement. In study two, a mediation model was tested whereby coach autonomy support and control were hypothesised to exhibit positive indirect effects on children’s engagement and disaffection in youth sport respectively via both psychological need satisfaction and psychological need thwarting. In study three, the previous study was replicated and extended with three waves of data. The final study of this thesis examined the interaction of coach autonomy support and structure to extend the findings of the previous studies. Overall, the findings suggest that structure and autonomy support from coaches will help to safeguard children’s adherence to youth sport because they jointly facilitate psychological need satisfaction and engagement. In contrast, control from coaches is likely to lead to children’s attrition in youth sport since such provisions undermine the psychological needs and produce disaffection.

Abstract:
Awareness of the sustainability of our natural resources is a continuing concern. Initiatives promoting environmental adult education (EAE) through professional development (PD) workshops ensure educators' have the knowledge and skills to inform their audience about environmental literacy and stewardship. However, these workshops have rarely been monitored. Specifically, it appears no researchers have focused on the reflective experiences of an EAE PD workshop on educator participants at least 5 years after participation. This basic qualitative study used telephone interviews of 8 past participants to explore whether and how they perceive their behavior changing in relation to natural resources conservation years after the EAE PD, and how they shared these changes with others. Through the contextual lens of EAE with a focus on outdoor experiential learning and transformative learning theories, five major themes emerged including: (a) becoming a more effective educator; (b) becoming more aware of the importance of conservation; (c) experiencing positive emotional effects; (d) changing behaviors that impact the environment; and (e) experiences of the EAE PD location. Implications for positive social change were found in the expressed experiences, content, and application of the EAE PD that ignited new means for approaching curriculum- specific content with a heightened focus on the importance of the conservation of natural resources.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the role of a campus recreation program in meeting the University of the Pacific's goals for social integration, retention, and satisfaction of its undergraduate students. Specific research questions examined students' perceptions of the relationship between the availability of recreational sports facilities and student retention; the impact of participation on students' psychological, physical, and academic well being; the relationship between campus recreation participation and the anticipated importance of sports and fitness activities after graduation; and the relationship between campus recreation participation and satisfaction with overall academic experience. A sample of 290 Pacific students was used in this stratified random study. Each student completed the Quality and Importance of Recreational Services (QIRS) assessment tool created and published by the Center for Research and Development at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. A majority of students perceived positive psychological, physical and academic gains from participating in campus recreation. Those benefits include developing a sense of belonging with Pacific; gaining self-confidence, group cooperation skills and improved time management; controlling weight; and increased physical fitness. On the other hand, there was little connection between participation in campus recreation and students' overall academic satisfaction at Pacific. This study recommends that the University of the Pacific use its recreation facilities as a central focus in the recruitment and retention process. Pacific should also set measurable goals for evaluating the ways in which the campus recreation program connects faculty, students and staff.

Abstract:
When people 'go to the theatre' we know that they are audiences. When young people go to Contact, however, they might be audiences, performers and/or theatre makers - they might play all three or more roles. Contact's users blur existing concepts and terminology. When we want to know more about theatre audiences, audience research offers models based on the distinction between audiences and theatre makers. If we want to know more about Contact's users, however, a model reflecting the blending of audiences and theatre makers' roles has yet to be developed. This thesis engages with Contact's users. It maps some of their multiple roles and experiences by asking two main questions: What are the practices of the people attending Contact and how can these practices be researched? A range of qualitative methods is necessary in order to investigate the wide variety of Contact's users' roles and experiences. Individual and group interviews are drawn from audience research, creative workshops are drawn from communication studies, and participant observation and visual research from the social sciences. Finally, a new method, Walking Fieldwork, is adapted for the use in theatre. A number of case studies are employed to investigate Contact's users. These case studies involve the observation of young actors during rehearsals and performances, the observation of participants in an outreach project, the investigation of audiences' experiences of two productions, and several short post-show interviews with general Contact audiences. This study found evidence that the relationship between theatre makers and audiences is changing. The term 'theatre user' is introduced as it opens up an area of overlap between the two and fits contemporary practices at Contact more closely. Contact's users function as communities, participants and co-creators. The descriptions of these roles and experiences contained in this thesis are understood as an initial exploration into practices of contemporary theatre users. However, further research is needed to build a more detailed understanding of these practices. In terms of research methods, this study found that the academic field of audience research needs to develop methods which are sensitive to both the backgrounds of theatre users and the theatrical context. The argument is put forward that audience research should become more aware of methods for the investigation of human experience and should enter into a 'methods-dialogue' with other academic fields of study.

Abstract:
Obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and poor dietary habits are major healthcare problems in the United States. These issues are especially prevalent in the state of Kentucky and among at-risk populations such as Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) participants. Studies have found that whole grains play a role in weight maintenance, protection against type 2 diabetes, and lowering cholesterol. Interventions aimed at improving WIC participant dietary behavior and intake has been successful as well. This study assessed Kentucky WIC participants’ knowledge of the benefits of consuming grains, attitudes and beliefs regarding food purchasing and grains, and identified grains consumed in a two-week period. A survey, created with the input of Registered Dietitians and WIC staff, examined these factors. Results from the survey found that WIC participants might benefit from education on: purchasing nutrient-dense foods (especially whole grains), the nutrition facts panel, types of grains, nutrients such as calories, fat, sugar, and fiber, serving sizes, and how to get children to eat whole grains.
