Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the mediating role of job satisfaction in the relationship between effort-reward imbalance (ERI) and burnout, turnover intentions, and mental health. Design/methodology/approach Based on a sample of 323 full-time employees in the small developing country in the Caribbean, this survey study tested a mediation model with job satisfaction depicting the relationship between ERI and various outcome variables. The model was compared to a partial mediation model. Findings The structural equation modelling (SEM) results revealed that the partial mediating model was superior to the full mediation model, suggesting that job satisfaction plays only a partial role in mediating the relationships between ERI and burnout, turnover intentions, and mental health. Research limitations/implications The study presents a cross-sectional approach to model testing but the study controlled for CMV statistically using the common latent factor approach within latent SEM procedures. Practical implications Organisations should ensure that employees’ efforts are appropriately and fairly rewarded as a means of reducing negative ERIs which can have adverse consequences on the physical and mental health of employees. Originality/value Using latent SEM procedures and statistical controls for CMV, the study examined job satisfaction as a potential mediator in a popular stressor-strain model.

Abstract:
Purpose Indirect or mediated effects constitute a type of relationship between constructs that often occurs in partial least squares (PLS) path modeling. Over the past few years, the methods for testing mediation have become more sophisticated. However, many researchers continue to use outdated methods to test mediating effects in PLS, which can lead to erroneous results. One reason for the use of outdated methods or even the lack of their use altogether is that no systematic tutorials on PLS exist that draw on the newest statistical findings. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach This study illustrates the state-of-the-art use of mediation analysis in the context of PLS-structural equation modeling (SEM). Findings This study facilitates the adoption of modern procedures in PLS-SEM by challenging the conventional approach to mediation analysis and providing more accurate alternatives. In addition, the authors propose a decision tree and classification of mediation effects. Originality/value The recommended approach offers a wide range of testing options (e.g. multiple mediators) that go beyond simple mediation analysis alternatives, helping researchers discuss their studies in a more accurate way.

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate the mechanism by which uses and gratification (U&G) constructs predict continuance intention to play (ContInt) the augmented reality game Pokémon Go (PG), through multiple serial mediation technique, with enjoyment and flow as mediators. The model also integrates other motivational factors specific to PG, namely, network externality and nostalgia and investigates the process by which they influence ContInt through players’ inherent need-to-collect animated monsters and online community involvement, respectively.Design/methodology/approachThe model was tested using 362 validated responses from an online survey of PG players in Malaysia. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was used to analyse the data. The predictive relevance of the model was tested via partial least squares-Predict.FindingsContInt is influenced through various mechanisms. Enjoyment is the most important mediator, mediating three U&G predictor constructs (achievement, escapism, challenge and social interaction) and the outcome ContInt. Flow did not have any influence on ContInt unless coupled with enjoyment as a serial mediator. Network externality and nostalgia were found to only influence ContInt through mediators, online community involvement and need-to-collect Pokémon Monsters, respectively. Overall, the results show evidence of four indirect-only mediation paths and one complementary partial mediation path.Originality/valueProvides support for an integrated model incorporating psychological, social and gaming motivational factors. While most other studies focus on direct relationships, we focus on indirect relationships through multiple sequential mediation analysis, following the recent modern mediation analysis guidelines. Contrary to previous findings, flow was not an important factor in predicting ContInt for gaming and nostalgia does not link directly to ContInt.

Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to more deeply examine the various types of testing mediations and use the comparison test by using test-based mediation Sobel models and Bayesian approach. The purpose of this study are to apply the traditional (using indirect effect) and Sobel test, extend Yuan and MacKinnon (2009) work on Bayesian mediation analysis. Both analysis methods of mediation (Traditional, Sobel Test and Bayesian estimation) should apply in the research of management, by using structural equation modeling (SEM) in a structural model, with one mediation, one exogenous (independent) and one endogenous variable. The meta-analysis approximation has been used to investigate the job satisfaction as a mediation in the relationship between employee competence and performance (endogenous). Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from ten dissertations of students of the Management Doctoral Program at the Brawijaya University from 2009 until 2013; data were analyzed for the mediation variable of job satisfaction (M) in the relationship between employee competence (X) and employee performance (Y) (Muindi and Obonyo, 2015; Olcer, 2015; Sattar et al., 2015; Khan and Ahmed, 2015). A researcher can determine the mediating variable and whether it is complete or partial or if mediation exists in several ways. Findings The results of the above findings using meta-analysis showed that 60% of previous research states that job satisfaction is a partial mediation on relationship competence of the performance, 10% of previous research states that job satisfaction is a full mediation on relationship competence of the performance and 30% stated that job satisfaction is not pemediasi (pemediasi means Mediation variable) on the relationship between competence and performance. This research found that all three approaches provide similar conclusions for ten previous research. Research limitations/implications The findings showed that the Sobel approach and the Bayesian approach provide results that are more sensitive than the traditional approach. Practical implications In my opinion, the rule to investigate the mediation variable should be completed with the conditions (1) q (theta) is not statistically significant, (2) α (alpha) and β (beta) are significant, and (3) q’ (theta) is significant, and increase when M is include as an additional predictor. This condition called partial mediation. Social implications The traditional method is simpler and easy. The method is less sensitive and is not sufficient for investigating the mediating variables. In general, the method results in a mediation variable, but it cannot be used to determine either partial or complete mediation variables. So, investigation by Baron and Kenny Methods (in Hair et al., 2010), the rule or testing called Sobel Test and another approach such as Bayesian to determine the mediation variable is necessary. Originality/value Various methods for detecting mediating/intervening have been widely used in previous research as a method of measurement using indirect effect (Hair et al., 2010), and calculations have been performed using Sobel test (Baron and Kenny, 1986) and Bayesian approach (Enders, 2013). In this study, I wanted to more deeply examine the various types of testing mediations, and use the comparison test by using the test-based mediation Sobel models and Bayesian approach (Baron and Kenny, 1986; Enders, 2013). The statistical application should not be complicated and difficult, it but must rather be simple and easy, so that it is user-friendly. The traditional method is simpler and easier than the other methods, but how sensitive is it? This research is conducted to investigate this problem. The evaluation of mediating mechanisms has become a critical element of behavioral science research (Enders, 2013), especially in the field of management, not only to assess whether (and how) interventions achieve their effects but also, more, broadly, to understand the cause of behavioral change. Methodologists have developed mediation analysis techniques for a broad range of substantive applications. However, methods for estimating mediation mechanisms with various methods have been understudied. The purpose of this study is to apply the traditional (using indirect effect) and Sobel tests and extend Yuan and MacKinnon’s (2009) work on the Bayesian mediation analysis. Both analyses methods of mediation (traditional and Sobel test and Bayesian estimation) should apply in the research of management, by using structural equation modeling (SEM) in a structural model, with one mediation, one exogenous (independent) and one endogenous variable. The meta-analysis approximation has been used to investigate job satisfaction as the mediation in the relationship between employee competence and performance (endogenous). This study uses software R to complete the mediating effect (Enders, 2013). R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. It is a GNU project which is similar to the S language and environment which was developed at Bell Laboratories (formerly AT&T, now Lucent Technologies) by John Chambers et al. R provides a wide variety of statistical analyses such as SEM and Mediation test. R provides an open source route for participation in that activity. The Bayesian estimation approach provides an R function and a macro that applies the method of mediation analysis.

Abstract:
This study investigates the mediating effect of perceived value in the relationship between team identification and purchase intention towards licensed apparel within two different price settings (market price and 40% above market price). Considering adaptation level theory, cognitive dissonance theory and dual information processing, it is hypothesised that team identification will directly influence purchase intention when the price of a product decreases. Two models (partial mediation and full mediation) were constructed in each price setting and tested using structural equation modelling (SEM). The results indicate that the partial mediation model better fits the data for the 70,000 Won setting and the full mediation model was a better fit for the 90,000 Won setting.

Abstract:
The aim of the present study is to explore, through a mediation model, the relationship among self-esteem, coping strategies, and the risk of Internet addiction in a sample of 300 Italian university students. We submitted the data to a descriptive, mediational comparison between variables (t-test), and correlational statistical analyses. The results confirmed the effect of self-esteem on the risk of Internet addiction. However, we found that the introduction of coping strategies as a mediator gives rise to partial mediation. A low level of self-esteem is a predictor of avoidance-oriented coping that, in turn, affects the risk of Internet addiction.

AbstractWestern mediators have accepted at face value claims as to the general acceptability and voluntariness of Chinese mediation. Their failure to attend to the cultural context in which Chinese mediation practices are embedded has led to a partial and uncritical impression. Abstract:
The impact of loyalty programs on customer retention was investigated in this study. Concomitantly, the mediating effects of brand association and customer satisfaction between loyalty programs and customer retention were also tested in three ways, viz., in parallel, distinct, and sequential through a series of structural models. The study focuses on the Malaysian national car sector, and empirical data was collected from 313 Malaysian national cars users through convenience sampling. This explanatory, quantitative research adopts a questionnaire as a survey instrument, and the collected data was first subjected to normality and reliability assessment followed by confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modeling using IBM SPSS AMOS 24. Multiple mediation analysis was then conducted, and results were confirmed through bootstrapping. Findings show that there is a significant positive impact of loyalty programs on customer retention. The brand association has a full mediation effect between loyalty programs and customer retention when tested in parallel with customer satisfaction; on the contrary, customer satisfaction demonstrated an insignificant mediation effect. On the other hand, when tested distinctly, brand association showed a partial mediating effect while there was no mediation effect of customer satisfaction. Besides, customer satisfaction and brand association demonstrated sequential partial mediation.

Abstract:
Background: The aim was to examine the mediating role of basic psychological needs and job satisfaction in the relationship between the gender effect on health problems and psychological well-being for health professionals in Europe in 2015. Methods: Two multiple partial mediation analyses were conducted in order to test the partial mediation of both basic needs and job satisfaction, with gender as the independent variable and health problems or well-being, respectively, as the dependent variables, with a sample of health professionals. Results: Women reported lower psychological well-being and more health problems than men. The total effect of gender on both well-being and health problems was found to be significant. Regarding multiple mediation analyses: (a) the effect of gender on well-being was fully mediated by global basic need satisfaction and job satisfaction, such that gender did not present a significant direct effect and (b) the effect of gender on health problems was partially mediated by global basic need satisfaction and job satisfaction, such that the direct effect remained significant. Conclusions: The fulfillment of basic needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, as postulated within self-determination theory, was hypothesized to play a mediating role in the relationship between gender and well-being. Since significant gender differences in basic need satisfaction were observed, such a mediator should be controlled in order to achieve a significant relationship between gender and well-being when basic needs comes into play. The current study adds to the research emphasizing the need for satisfaction as a promising mechanism underlying for female health professionals’ well-being.

Abstract:
We developed a moderated mediation model to investigate both the mediating role of self-esteem in the relationship between extraversion and emotional expression, and the moderating effect of emotional intelligence on this mediating role, in a moderated mediation model. We used personality and emotional expression questionnaires, and self-esteem and emotional intelligence scales to survey 2,644 Chinese college students. Results showed that there was a significant positive correlation between extraversion and emotional expression and a partial mediating role of self-esteem between extraversion and emotional expression, and that the mediating role of self-esteem was moderated by emotional intelligence. Indirect effects were more significant in participants with high versus low emotional intelligence. Thus, the influence of extraversion on emotional expression was a moderated mediation effect. Theoretical guidance and practical implications for the cultivation of emotional expression in college students are discussed.

Drawing upon institutional theory, this article develops an extended model to test and verify the effects of external institutional pressures on Secure Software Development (SSD) assimilation and the roles of internal critical factors. The empirical results are based on 86 survey data from respondents of related organizations in United Kingdom, Hong Kong, and Mainland China who have related project experience about SSD. Results from partial least squares (PLS) analysis suggest that both mimetic and coercive pressures have indirect effects on SSD assimilation with the distal mediation of top management. Normative pressures positively affect SSD assimilation with the full mediation of secure software champion. Results also suggest that secure software champion plays another partial mediation between top management participation and SSD assimilation. This paper highlights the important role of secure software champion for its dually mediating effects on both external and internal forces during SSD assimilation process.

Abstract:
Abstract Objectives Childhood cognitive development is influenced by biological and environmental factors. One such factor, obesity, impairs cognitive development and is associated with sleep disturbances (SDs). We examined the mediating role of SDs on the relationship between obesity and cognitive function in children from a large longitudinal study. Methods A total of 9951 children aged 9–11 years were included in this study. Children were recruited from 21 centers across the US from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. We assessed cognitive development using metrics for fluid (adaptation and new learning abilities), crystallized (experience-dependent abilities), and total cognitive function. Mediation analyses were conducted via linear regression modeling, with adjustment for potential confounders (sex, age, ethnicity, household income, parental education, and self-reported physical activity) for each of the 3 cognitive outcomes. Mediation significance was determined by bootstrapping. We also stratified our analyses by race (Caucasian, African-American, other racial minorities) to examine potential racial differences. Results We found a statistically significant inverse association between BMI and both total (β = −0.41, P < 0.001) and fluid (β = −0.49, P < 0.001) cognitive function. Stratified regression analyses found similar results for the Caucasians and other minorities groups, for both, fluid (Caucasian: β = −0.52, P < 0.001; other minorities β = −0.75, P = 0.01) and total cognitive function (Caucasian: β = −0.45, P < 0.001; other ethnicities: β = −0.76, P = 0.01). No association was observed among African Americans. Overall mediation analysis revealed that SDs were a partial mediator only for fluid cognitive function (P = 0.002). Further mediation analyses showed similar SDs partial mediation effects over fluid cognitive function in Caucasians (P = 0.002) and borderline significant mediation in the other minorities group (P = 0.06). Conclusions Our results suggest that SDs mediates the effect of obesity on cognitive functioning in children and that these effects vary across races, particularly as it pertains to fluid cognition. Fluid cognition is critical in childhood neurodevelopment, and further research is needed to address its long-term effects across the life course. Funding Sources None to declare.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Various psychological and biological pathways have been proposed as mediators between childhood adverse events (CA) and psychosis. A systematic review of the evidence in this domain is needed; open new venues for treatment interventions in traumatized patients with psychosis. The aim of the current work is to systematically review the evidence on clinical and biological mediators between CA and psychosis across the psychosis spectrum. Methods This systematic review followed PRISMA guidelines. Articles published between 1979 and July 2019 were identified through a literature search in OVID (PsychINFO; Medline and Embase). The direction of the evidence by each analysis and each study was presented by group of mediator categories found in the review; the percentage of total effect mediated was calculated and whether the mediation was partial, total or null (if it was absent) was reported. Results 47 studies were included, with a total of 72286 GP subjects and 2800 from clinical samples. The quality of studies was judges as “fair”. We found (i) solid evidence of mediation between CA and psychosis by negative cognitive schemas about the self, the world and others (NS); by dissociation and other PTSD symptoms; (ii) evidence of a partial mediation through an affective pathway (affective dysregulation, anxiety and depression) in GP; (iii) that feeling of loneliness appeared as an important mediator that should be further explored; (iv) lack of studies exploring biological mediators; (v) little evidence supporting the mediating role of dysfunctional attachment between CA and psychosis. Discussion Experiences of adversity, alongside with all relevant mediators such as PTSD and mood related symptoms and NS should be routinely assessed in patients with psychosis. Targeting such mediators through cognitive behavioural approaches such as trauma-focused therapy and/or pharmacological means could be a beneficial add on to the traditional treatment of positive symptoms.

Abstract:
The increasing dependency of emerging adults (EA) on their family of origin and their lower future expectations challenge intergenerational family support exchanges and may affect their impact on satisfaction with life. This study aims to examine the mediation effect of familism, filial maturity, and relationship satisfaction between different directions of support (received, given and anticipated between both) and satisfaction with life. Data was collected through the administration of self-report questionnaires to a convenience sample of 243 EA (18-30 years old) of both genders, students and workers, of different socioeconomic statuses. Results corroborate the mediation effect of the study variables and suggest that the magnitude of this impact depends on the direction of the support: partial mediations are observed for the received support, whereas total mediations are observed for the given support.

Abstract:
Purpose Drawn upon the perspective of implicit voice theory, the purpose of this paper is to explore the underlying mechanism as well as the boundary effect in the relationship between paternalistic leadership and voice behavior. Design/methodology/approach Multiple-wave survey data from a sample of 368 employees in China were used to test the hypothesized moderated mediation model. Findings The findings show that both benevolent leadership and moral leadership related positively to voice behavior, whereas authoritative leadership played a negative role in influencing voice behavior. Employees’ implicit voice belief played a partial mediating role between paternalistic leadership and voice behavior. Furthermore, perceived HRM strength weakens both the mediation relationship among benevolent leadership, implicit voice belief and voice behavior, and the mediation relationship among moral leadership, implicit voice belief and voice behavior. However, the moderated mediation effect of implicit voice belief on the relationship between authoritative leadership and voice behavior is not significant. Practical implications Leaders are encouraged to behave benevolently and morally whereas to avoid excessive authoritative style at work, so that employees can be encouraged to speak out. Organizations are advised to introduce management practices like training and development sessions and to improve employees’ perceived HRM strength so that the implicit voice belief can be reduced, and the voice behavior can be stimulated. Originality/value The research provided a fresh theoretical perspective on the underlying mechanism between paternalistic leadership and employees’ voice behavior by unveiling employee implicit voice belief’s partial mediating role between paternalistic leadership and employee voice behavior. Furthermore, the study contributed to the literature of voice by adopting a more integrative perspective and exploring the role of the implementation of the organization’s system, i.e., perceived HRM strength that provided a boundary condition in the above mediation model.

Abstract:
There is a subsequent work from the previous studies on the relationship between firm-specific attributes and firm leverage. Then, during the last decade, international studies started to extend this field by scrutinizing how the firm leverage influences firm performance. However, much of the discussion from previous studies have not systematically investigated the simultaneously of the cause-effect framework on the impact of firm-specific attributes on firm financial performance through firm leverage which acts as a mediator variable. In short, it is reasonable to examine the mediating effects in which whether firm leverage may mediate or indirectly influence the relationship between firm-specific attributes and firm financial performance, particularly, from the perspective of Malaysian Shariah Compliant companies. The main motivation for this research is to contribute to corporate finance literature and how firms tend to choose their financing structure from the perspective of the capital structure theories. We obtained data of 398 Malaysian Shariah compliant companies from the Bursa Malaysia stock exchange with a total number of samples of 7414 for the sample data period from 2000 to 2018. We find that there are three relationships that categorize as competitive mediation which is the relationships between the asset tangibility (AT), growth opportunities (GRW), firm size (FS) and firm financial performance. While, non-debt tax shield (NDTS) is categorized as a complementary mediation. We use the PLS-SEM approach in SmartPLS software 3.0 M3 to develop a set of mediation model from the perspective of capital structure theory for the Malaysian Shariah compliant companies.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to measure the business performance by taking Cloud computing adoption as a mediating variable in Indian industries. A conceptual model is framed using the concept of a TAM-TOE framework which is combined with some new constructs of ‘Risk'. Partial and full mediation are used from the umbrella concept of SEM (Structural Equation Modelling) to test the hypotheses. The study identified that Technological variables ‘Technology Innovation (TI)' and ‘Usage of Technology (UT)' positively mediates the relationship, Organizational variable ‘Industry Usage (IU)' negatively mediates the relationship and Environmental variables ‘Management Style (MS)' positively mediates the relationship whereas ‘Trust (T)' has no mediation effect. The ‘Risk' factors ‘Risk Analysis (RA)' positively influences the mediation process and ‘Perceived IT Security Risk (PITR)' has no mediation effect on the dependent variable ‘Business performance (BP)'. The findings of the study have some important implications. As the constructs ‘Risk (Perceived IT Security Risk)' and ‘Trust' have no mediation effect, it implies industries do not give importance on these factors while adopting Cloud computing. Hence, risk and trust resulted as the barriers for technology adoption, and organizations should verify these criteria during Cloud computing adoption of a better performance in the business. The study tests indirect effect and direct effect on business performance considering Cloud computing adoption as the mediating variable.

Abstract Background We sought to investigate the relationship between social violence and adult overweight/obesity and the role of common mental disorders (CMD) in mediating this relationship. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted from January to June 2016 in Tunisia. Participants were selected from randomly selected Primary Health Care Centers. The Arabic version of the Adverse Childhood Experiences-International Questionnaire (ACE-IQ) was used. Results A total of 2120 participants were included. Women exposed to social ACEs had higher rates of overweight/obesity than men (13.5 versus 9.5%; P = 0.004). For women, statistically significant partial mediation effects of CMD were observed for exposure to community violence (% mediated = 17.7%). For men, partial mediation was found for the exposure to peer violence (% mediated = 12.5%). Conclusion Our results provide evidence of the independent increase of overweight/obesity after exposure to social ACEs. Efforts to uncover and address underlying trauma in health care settings may increase the effectiveness of obesity interventions.

Many studies uphold information systems (IS) capabilities as a key factor in creating customer capital. This study explores this topic further by proposing a multiple mediation model. Hence, the study fills a conspicuous gap in the literature through its analysis of the mediating roles of green innovation product and environmental uncertainty. The study employs partial least square variance-based structural equation modeling to a sample of 425 participants from a variety of firms. From the findings of the study, we infer that green innovation performance — to a greater extent — and environmental uncertainty — to a lesser extent — play mediating roles between IS capabilities and customer capital.

Abstract:
Employees become an important factor in the success of the organization. They have impact on almost every business activity. Therefore company needs to manage their human resources in order to get highest performance. Many human resources practices implemented to achieve such result. One thing that indicate a positive result is the level of employee commitment toward the organization. Committed employees will contribute more. Affective commitment is the highest level of commitment because this emerge from within the employee's feelings. This study discusses the effect of perceived organizational support (POS), stress, and job satisfaction on employee’s affective commitment. The research was conducted in the drinking water company in Bandung using 85 participants. The analysis technique used is partial correlation analysis to identify the relationship between variables and also identify control variables that affect each relationship. Furthermore, mediation analysis is used to determine whether stress and job satisfaction have a mediating role in the relationship of POS influence to affective commitment. The results showed that POS had no significant effect on affective commitment. Furthermore, stress does not have the role of mediation either partially or simultaneously with job satisfaction. While job satisfaction has a partial mediation role in the relationship of influence between POS and affective commitment.

Abstract:
Purpose – The paper aims to examine the role of market orientation (MO) and innovation capability in determining business performance during an economic upturn and downturn. Design/methodology/approach – The data comprise two national-level surveys conducted in Finland in 2008, representing an economic boom, and in 2010 when the global economic crisis had hit the Finnish market. Partial least square path analysis is used to test the potential mediating effect of innovation capability on the relationship between MO and business performance during economic boom and bust. Findings – The results show that innovation capability fully mediates the performance effects of a MO during an economic upturn, whereas the mediation is only partial during a downturn. Innovation capability also mediates the relationship between a customer orientation and business performance during an upturn, whereas the mediating effect culminates in a competitor orientation during a downturn. Thus, the role of innovation capability as a mediator between the individual market-orientation components varies along the business cycle. Originality/value – This paper is one of the first studies that empirically examine the impact of the economic cycle on the relationship between strategic marketing concepts, such as MO or innovation capability, and the firm's business performance.

Abstract:
AbstractThe study investigated the effects of organisational communication on work outcomes (job satisfaction, affective commitment and quit-intentions) of agriculture research personnel from six research institutes in Nigeria. Further, the mediational role of job satisfaction was determined among the constructs. Simple random sampling technique was used to elicit information from 209 researchers of the selected research institutes. Data were collected through a well-structured questionnaire and analysed using hierarchical regression and Sobel tests. Results obtained from hierarchical regression analyses indicated that organisational communication was related to job satisfaction (b = 0.18, P < 0.01), affective commitment (b1 = 0.20, P < 0.01) and quit-intentions (b1 = – 0.18, P < 0.01). Sobel test indicated that job satisfaction partially mediated the organisational communication-affective commitment relationship (Z = 5.42, P < 0.05). Similarly, job satisfaction was a partial mediator of the organisational communication – quit-intention relationship (Z = 4.13, P < 0.05). This is an indication that increased organisational communication fosters personnel’s satisfaction with job, improves affective commitment and reduces intents of quitting the organisation. Evidence of partial mediation revealed that job satisfaction may not be the only mediator of the predictor-criterions linkages.
