Full textThis thesis retraces the history of the workers’ conflicts at Billancourt starting in the 1950ies in their connection with the communists’ policies, dominant at the time, and carried out by the skilled workers. It highlights and analyses the hidden factors of the transformations that affect the different conflicts and the worker identities that manifest themselves in these conflicts. The domination of the communist model of the 50ies, destabilized by the dynamics of the conflicts of the years around 1968, was the work of the skilled workers. This dynamism was stimulated by the transformation of work engaged upon in the previous decades. Their insubordination, their protests about work and racism, the strength of the blockade strikes, thwart the French communist party policy oriented towards the union from the unskilled workers to the engineer. The initiative of the rupture, in 1977, of the left, attested to the failure of the PCF’s ambition to remain the leading party. In 1981, the PCF counted in vain on a successful, but unwished for, participation in the government. This participation disappointed the workers, activating contradictions within its militant corps. The factory world dislocated. Working class centrality and class concept had lost all operational reality, while the communist policy of categorical particularization was powerless to stem a political "balkanisation" of wage earners. Violent disagreements broke out in the sections, and were seen in the factory by divergent practices. The radical campaign for the "ten of Billancourt", proposals for alternative management, failed. The ties between the party and the workers were weakened, leaving the immigrants alone and helpless in the face of job suppressions
Vigreux, Jean. "Waldeck Rochet, du militant paysan au dirigeant ouvrier." Paris, Institut d'études politiques, 1997. http://www.theses.fr/1997IEPP0016.
Full textWaldeck Rochet's biography was written both as the itinerary of a communist militating farmer in the French Communist Party (PCF) and as the history of the same party seen from an individual experience. This two-fold outlook individual/group is the essential guideline of the thesis but its purpose is also to highlight his role. Several sources have been used to study his life and in particular the state archives in France (the archives of the watchdog institutions of the state), the state archives in Russia (rtskhidni those of the which keeps the archives of the Komintern), the private archives belonging to the PCF (those kept place du Colonel Fabien and those in the marxist library in Paris) but also the private archives belonging to the W. Rochet family and to several witnesses. The inatheque archives, press cuttings and pictures of W. Rochet have completed the sources. Finally more than fifty interviews have helped to confront the oral testimonies to the other sources and thus have contributed to give an idea of the way W. Rochet was viewed by other people. His itinerary can be divided into four periods which follow a chronological order. The first period underlines the emergence of a farming communist framework and analyses the reasons why people joined the party, how the party was created and how members were selected (from 1905 to 1939). The second period goes from the second world war up to the period of peaceful coexistence. This stage relates W. Rochet's growing role as a leader, this farmer leader becoming M. Thorez's successor (from 1939 to 1964). This period enables us to stress the specificity of French rural communism. The third period corresponds to the moment when W. Rochet was at the head of the PCF (from 1964 to 1969). At this point it was necessary to envisage the conception of his leading role, together with the importance of his new ideological and strategic ideas which enabled the PCF to become once again fully part of the French political life among the left-wing union. But it was also necessary to study the hard times triggered off by the 1968 events (may days in France and the Czechoslovakian invasion). In the last part, as W. Rochet's fatal illness was tackled, the memory left by this communist figure had to be dwelt upon : his impact being felt both among the communist militants and on the French political stage

Full textMy main hypothesis is that the analysis of diversity of communist electoral decline process, in territory in which french communist party is very strength, would be able to allow to know the structure of communist domination. In this purpose, i was interested in pcf decline on 1978-1995 period in one of his old department of strength : the north's department. More precisely, in this last department, i have isolated the communes caracterised by a particular communist electoral domination, before the beginning of the decline (1978). From a theoretical reflection about the notion of "political territory", the elaboration of an empirical definition of territories whose foundation is based on pcf localized electoral domination (communist territories of domination), and the construction of a typology of communist electoral resistance of these territories, i have found the structures of communist decline. It results from this research that resistance of pcf's decline is, in an important measure, based on the oldness of a particuliarly dense communist implantation, in an area stamped by old industry (steel industry-metallurgy and mine). The very anthropological dimension of pcf implantation, which is very dependant on a worker world in disappearence, is a strength but also a weakness. It's a strength, because pcf leans on the oldness of its implantations, their geographical interlinks and the presence of many politic elects to limit and to slow down to a maximum the decline process. It's a weakness, because this anthropological anchor represents such a confinement at different levels of local syndical and political communism (communist elects, voters and members of the party), that the fate of communist territories of domination seems linked to the fate of the old industry

Full textAlthough closely linked, industrialization and socialism are both in opposition and in harmony. The process of industrialization is simultaneously the vector of refusal and support for the creation of a new society. Based on the workers’ press, the study of associative, cooperative, mutualistic, collectivist and communistic models allows reviewing the global idea of the workers’ rejection of industrialization, which previously has been too often assimilated to the refusal of proletarianization. This analysis permits qualifying the most widely accepted theses on the links that tie the French working class to communism, and on the reasons for implantation of the French communist party, thereby giving rise to the formulation of new hypotheses : the PCF was able to assert itself in France since it fulfilled a need of the working population, confronted with the process of industrialization, and because it reinforced pre-existing revolutionary values in a domain which was devoid of a model of society. Confirming these hypotheses required going back in time to examine the workers’ relationship with the technological society and to probe the solutions that they favored to meet this situation. Faced with the proletariazation phenomenon, the concept of the workers’ power surged forth. While confirming the above-stated hypotheses, this study highlights the role played by the second empire in the evolution of the workers’ thinking. .

Full textIn the first part, the study assesses the history of the women's workers movement during the austro-hungarian empire and of women's work during the first Austrian Republic. The second and main part of this thesis analyses the relationship between worker's organizations and women : inside the free unions, the social democratic party, the austrian communist party and the catholic workers movement. The place and the role of women, the demands in their support form the central parts of those chapters. A sketch of the main militants is also drawn (A. Popp, Therese Schlesinger, Emmy Freundlich, Kathe Leichter, Gabriele Proft, Rosa Jochmann, Amalie Seidel, Anna Boschek, Wilhelmine Moik, Elfriede Friedlander, Malke Schorr, Anna Grun, Anna Stromer, Grete Rehor-Daurer. Lastly, women's contribution to autromarxism, theory and praxis is brought to evidence and analysed. These contributions touch such varied fields as co-operatives, social welfare, the international, education and culture, youth's education, women's everyday and private life : sexuality and marriage, housework. An annex includes a dictionary of active militants during the first austrian republic and various documents
