Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was to determine if culture was a significant determinate of commitment to one's work organization. The second objective was to develop a work commitment index that was not only comprehensive but minimized redundancy. This work commitment index contained items measuring values and traits associated with the Protestant Work Ethic, Job Involvement, and Organizational Commitment. A T-Test analysis indicated no significant differences in the levels of protestant work ethic or job involvement possessed by hispanic and white soldiers. Only in organizational commitment were levels significantly different, but multiple regression analysis did not support this difference after controlling for other variables. Some progress was made in the development of a comprehensive work commitment index that minimized redundancy. The theories used in this index are capturing three different facets of work commitment. There still exists some redundancy and overlap within and between measures, but at less excessive levels.

Abstract:
This paper is the second part of a two part paper that reports on the improvement of efficiency of a one-and-half stage high work axial flow turbine. The first part covered the design of the endwall profiling as well as a comparison with steady probe data, this part covers the analysis of the time-resolved flow physics. The focus is on the time-resolved flow physics that lead to a total-to-total stage efficiency improvement of Δηtt = 1.0% ± 0.4%. The investigated geometry is a model of a high work (Δh/U2 = 2.36), axial shroudless HP turbine. The time-resolved measurements have been acquired upstream and downstream of the rotor using a Fast Response Aerodynamic Probe (FRAP). The paper contains a detailed analysis of the secondary flow field that is changed between the axisymmetric and the non-axisymmetric endwall profiling cases. The flowfield at exit of the first stator is improved considerably due to non-axisymmetric endwall profiling and results in reduced secondary flow and a reduction of loss at both hub and tip, as well as a reduced trailing shed vorticity. The rotor has reduced losses and a reduction of secondary flows mainly at the hub. At the rotor exit the flow field with non-axisymmetric endwalls is more homogenous due to the reduction of secondary flows in the two rows upstream of the measurement plane. This confirms that non-axisymmetric endwall profiling is an effective tool for reducing secondary losses in axial turbines. Using a frozen flow assumption the time-resolved data is used to estimate the axial velocity gradients, which are then used to evaluate the streamwise vorticity and dissipation. The non-axisymmetric endwall profiling of the first nozzle guide vane show reductions of dissipation and streamwise vorticity due to reduced trailing shed vorticity. This smaller vorticity explains the reduction of loss at mid-span, which is shown in the first part of the two part paper. This leads to the conclusion that non-axisymmetric endwall profiling also has the potential of reducing trailing shed vorticity.

Abstract:
Abstract For machined parts, setup time is a major component of the total time required to manufacture a machined part from a stock. If the number of setups and hence setup time can be reduced, this will not only decrease the manufacturing time, but will also ensure better machining accuracy, require fewer work-holding devices and increase machine usage time. To achieve any improvement in setup time, first we need to estimate the setup time accurately. In this paper we propose a methodology to estimate the setup time for machining prismatic parts in a three axis vertical machining center. We concurrently consider three major factors for estimating the number of setups, namely — the precedence constraints among machining operations, the feasibility of work holding using vise clamping, and the availability of datum faces for locating the workpiece on the machine table during machining on a 3 axis vertical machining center.

In ASME 2016 35th International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/omae2016-54437.

Full text
Abstract:
Real-Time Hybrid Model (ReaTHM) tests of a braceless semi-submersible wind turbine were carried out at MARINTEK’s Ocean Basin in 2015. The tests sought to evaluate the performance of the floating wind turbine (FWT) structure in environmental conditions representative of the Northern North Sea. In order to do so, the tests employed a new hybrid testing method, wherein simulated aerodynamic loads were applied to the physical structure in the laboratory. The test method was found to work well, and is documented in [1]. The present work describes some of the experimental results. The test results showed a high level of repeatability, and permitted accurate investigation of the coupled responses of a FWT, including unique conditions such as blade pitch faults. For example, the influence of the wind turbine controller can be seen in decay tests in pitch and surge. In regular waves, aerodynamic loads due to constant wind had little influence on the structure motions (except for the mean offsets). Tests in irregular waves with and without turbulent wind are compared directly, and the influence of the wave-frequency motions on the aerodynamic damping of wind-induced low-frequency motions can be observed.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this research is to reveal the relationship between job stress and burnout of service sector employees. The study consists of three parts. In the first part, the concept of service is examined. The concept of service emerged in the 17th century and expanded in developed and developing countries from the second half of the 20th century, surpassing the two important sectors of agriculture and industry, and gained great importance in the economy. The increase in people's free time, the increasing number of women in the workforce, and the increase in people's incomes have caused the service sector to gain importance in the economy. In the second part, the concept of stress and burnout is examined. Over time, all sectors have modernized and made people's daily lives easier, and at the same time, this modernization has increased the level of stress in people, and a feeling of burnout has emerged in people due to increased stress. The symptoms and characteristics of stress, which people cannot completely remove from their lives, also differ. Thus, people have coped with the resulting stress and burnout caused by stress by using different methods and have continued their lives. In the third part of the study, the relationships between work stress and burnout were discussed and research was conducted. As a result of the research, a significant and positively charged relationship was determined between job stress and the feeling of burnout. A meaningless and negatively charged relationship was found between work stress and lifestyle. A significant and negatively charged relationship was found between the feeling of burnout and lifestyle.

In Sixth International Conference on Higher Education Advances. Valencia: Universitat Politècnica de València, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/head20.2020.11079.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aims to measure the impact of course coordination and part-time Precalculus instructor support on students academic performance. Our results show the Precalculus passing rate (71.53%) was slightly higher in the post-coordination cohorts. However, this difference was not statistically significant from the passing rate (70.70%) of the cohorts in pre-coordination. Also, there was no significant difference between the passing rates (66.90% vs 65.25%) of calculus in the pre- and post-coordination cohorts. However, when accounting for the two versions of calculus, we observed one passing rate was statistically significantly lower in post-coordination cohorts, while the other passing rate was statistically significantly higher after Precalculus coordination. This paper discusses how our results confirm that a careful curriculum design in addition to a dedicated course coordination can have a significant positive impact on students’ learning and their academic performance. We observed that the reflective teaching philosophy and opportunity to engage in critical conversations about teaching and learning promoted through course coordination influenced classroom practice and resulted in improved student outcomes. We recommend that departments should recognize the importance of course coordination and encourage faculty to work closely towards the common aim of delivering the best teaching practices.

Abstract:
In 2014, Colombia implemented a policy that added flexibilization to labor contracts for part-time workers that reduced the quasi-fixed costs of employing formal workers. We find that the reform increased the probability of entering the formal sector within the targeted population: low-wage, part-time workers. We use administrative employer-employee matched data and leverage variation across cities and industries in demand for part-time work before the reform. We find that, after the tax reform, the change in the total number of formal workers is 6 percentage points higher at firms that use the new contracts relative to their counterparts that choose not to hire low-wage, formal, part-time workers under the new tax form. Mean daily wages temporarily declined after the reform.

Abstract:
This toolkit provides guidance on using Oxfam’s Household Care Survey (HCS) methodology, which was developed by Oxfam as part of the WE-Care initiative to transform the provision of unpaid care and domestic work (UCDW). UCDW underpins all our lives yet is overwhelmingly provided by women and girls. Recognising UCDW is essential for any initiative that aims to understand and address gender inequality. The HCS is a quantitative survey tool that generates context-specific evidence on how women, men and children spend their time, how care is provided, by whom, and the main factors that affect people’s responsibilities for UCDW, such as access to care services, infrastructure and social norms. The HCS can be used to generate a baseline, or to measure the impact of a specific policy or programme. The methodology can be integrated into different projects with different objectives and adjusted for use in various contexts. The HCS toolkit is designed to be used by development practitioners, policy makers, employers, academics and researchers. Part A provides guidance for planning, collecting, analysing and using HCS data. Part B provides guidance for understanding, adjusting and using the HCS questions. Both sections should be read before undertaking the survey.

Price, Roz. K4D’s Work Around Climate Change and Related Issues. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), October 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2022.006.

Full text
Abstract:
This report provides an illustrative overview of K4D’s work from October 2016 until May 2021 connected to climate change. Given the breadth of K4D reports that touch on climate change (or related issues), this report has taken a sub-section of reports to focus on, with a total of 75 reports explored and 2 LJs touched on in more detail. It is hence not an in-depth nor exhaustive analysis of climate change per se, nor the many different climate-related issues explored by K4D over the past four years. The content is purely illustrative, based on a rapid review of this sub-section. Insights are also taken from the data that K4D collects for each request based on the information provided by advisers and FCDO. Hence, the data is limited to the information available to the K4D team at the time of the request and the level of details available may vary from one request to the other. The purpose of this report is to inform FCDO about some of the specifics of their requests on climate-related issues, in general. This report will be used as input for a K4D-FCDO learning event on climate change issues. It also makes up part of a series of K4D reports, with the other reports synthesising K4D work on Covid-19 (Quak, 2021) and conflict, violence, and peace (Herbert, 2021b).
