Abstract:
Odo of Sully, Bishop of Paris (1200-8), decreed in his statutes that each parish priest within his diocese should have a book called amanuale, which should contain theordoof service for extreme unction, the catechism, baptism, and everyday things. His prescription is the earliest mention in the episcopal legislation that a parish priest should have one particular book dedicated to the liturgy for all the services associated with pastoral care. But codices concerned with the sacerdotal rites for thecura anitnarumhave a history which goes back to the late ninth and tenth centuries. These earlyritualiawere often combined with the monastic collectar, as in the mid-tenth-centuryDurham Collectar. There are also some examples from the late tenth and eleventh centuries ofritualiamade for the secular clergy. Odo of Sully was thus providing his powerful support to an existing practice rather than instituting a new form of service book. This paper investigates further the context in which these early examples of ‘parish’ rituals were compiled, beginning with the Carolingian background.

In the other two, St Ursula’s and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary parishes in Łódź, he held the office of parish priest. In St Ursula’s parish he was the first parish at the pre-existing pastoral centre, and the second parish he took over as parish priest was the oldest parish in Łódź.

Abstract:
This essay explores the development of parish record-keeping in early modern London, examining the implications of changing practices for communal memory. Building on the study of more than 50 parish registers, it investigates who wrote the parish records, how they were kept and how they were used. Many of the extant records are the product of a ‘memorial moment’ at the turn of the seventeenth century, involving a concerted attempt to re-order and re-present parish papers as memorial objects: the material representations of parish memory. These registers highlight the emergence of an ongoing communal investment in and oversight of record-keeping practices, while the evidence of annotations and corrections in parish registers demonstrates the persistence of oral forms of communal memory, contesting the textual record. The development of the parish register in the period thus emerges as a key site for renegotiating the forms and habits of parish memory.

Abstract:
This article presents the Congregation for the Clergy’s reflection on the state of the parish and conditions for pastoral care. The congregation’s most recent instruction entitled The Pastoral Conversion of the Parish Community in the Service of the Evangelizing Mission of the Church presents the authors’ vision for renewal of the parish community and pastoral care within the parish setting. This article is the first of its kind to present the bases for, the conditions of, and the direction that such renewal should take. The need for renewal stems primarily from ongoing cultural changes that are taking place in the modern world. The renewal should transform the parish into a sanctuary where the Word of God is proclaimed in a way that the faithful understand. The parish should become a place of deep devotion to the Eucharist and a shelter for every person in need. In order to renew the parish, it is necessary to change parish structures. It is also fitting to introduce changes concerning the agents of pastoral care and to engage the laity in pastoral care of the parish. Through textual and comparative analysis as well as textual criticism, the author presents the model of parish pastoral care according to the Instruction The Pastoral Conversion of the Parish Community in the Service of the Evangelizing Mission of the Church.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Dutch Reformed Parish in Archangel in the Eighteenth Century The Dutch Reformed parish in the Northern Russian seaport of Archangel probably originated in the 1630s and apparently received some sort of formal and independent status in about 1660. In the eighteenth century, the parish was a small and shrinking community. In the 1730s, it had an estimated 240 Dutch members, and by the 1770s about 110. The parish virtually coincided with the Dutch merchant community of Archangel. Many of the Dutch merchants of that town lived there with their wives, children and servants. The parish council consisted of the minister and (probably three) elders and (probably three) deacons. The minister, who usually came from the Netherlands or Germany, was hired by the Directors of the Muscovy Trade (de Directeuren van de Moskovische Handel) in Amsterdam on behalf of the parish, examined and called by the Classis of Amsterdam, and paid by the parish. The church, of course, focussed primarily on the spiritual care of the parish members. But the parish council also performed communal services in a broader sense. It provided for the teaching of children and acted as orphan's court. The parish had a school-house and employed a Dutch schoolmaster.

Abstract:
The article examines the views of the bishops of the Orthodox Russian Church on the prospects for the transformation of the Orthodox parish of the Russian Empire, reflected in the literary monument of church thought of the beginning of the 20th century – the “Comments of the Diocesan Bishops on Issues of Church Reform” of 1905–1906. The author shows that the bishops viewed the parish question in conjunction with other aspects of church reform, and sometimes with the general socio-economic situation in the empire. The bishops’ view of parish reform was quite broad. They spoke about the possible autonomy of parish communities, about the possibility of allowing parishioners to dispose of the parish property and giving them the right to intercede for a candidate they knew when nominating members of the parish clergy. At the same time, the author notes that almost none of the diocesan bishops who supported parish reforms in the “Comments”, responded to the Synod’s call to begin parish reform in 1906.

Abstract:
The Council of Trent made the parish priest the head of the parish, but for a long time priests found it difficult to affirm their authority. Chief among their opponents were the confraternities led by the parish elites. This article examines the difficult relations between Don Francesco Maria Xuereb (1769–1801), parish priest of the Maltese parish of Saint Catherine’s (in Zejtun), and members of the local confraternity of the Holy Sacrament, who led a revolt against him. The charges levelled against the priest were several, but the Sacra Congregazione dei Vescovi e Regolari found him innocent on all counts. The assistant clergy and the parishioners of Saint Catherine’s would not, however, receive him back. When, against the warning of the bishop of Malta, Xuereb returned to his parish, the women took over the church and shut themselves in it, while the men stood outside in protest against the priest. In the end, a coadjutor was appointed to run the parish and when Father Xuereb died in 1801 he was named parish priest to everyone’s delight.

Abstract:
Abstract In the Roman Catholic Church a parish is the smallest legal unit and it is the milieu for religious, social, and cultural activities for a group of people joined together in a geographical area. The purpose of this article is a sociological study examining the Catholic parish in Poland as a local community. Today a parish along with its community is exposed to social change and to myriad forces characteristic of the postmodern culture. In Poland two opposite forces characterize the life of a parish community: on the one side, secularization and individualization, and on the other side, socialization and evangelization. The subjective dimension of a local community, which is related to identification of people with a local parish, along with social bonds with the parish as a local community, are discussed in the first two sections of the article. In subsequent sections some issues related to common activities, membership in movements, religious communities, and Catholic associations within the parish will be presented. While the agency of people in the parish community is theoretically acknowledged, it is still not fully implemented. The discussion is based on the data obtained from major public opinion institutes in Poland.

Abstract:
Resources of the archive and library of Saint Catherine’s parish in Wolbrom The article tries to take a closer look at the history of the archive and library of Saint Catherine’s parish in Wolbrom, describe the local conditions and briefly characterise the archival resources and library collection. The parish archive and library, originally part of the monastery, in Wolbrom have previously been the subject of only a few studies. Saint Catherine’s parish in Wolbrom was founded in the first half of the 14th century. At the beginning of the 1620s, it was handed over to the Canons Regular of the Lateran from the Corpus Christi Church in Kazimierz near Krakow. The first printed books almost certainly arrived in the town together with the founding of the parish, while the oldest mention of the parish book collection in Wolbrom comes from 1566. In the following centuries, the collection was successively enriched with donations from benefactors and the clergy. The main users of the collection were almost certainly the monks themselves, the heads of the parish schools and pupils. The rich collection in the parish library was not, however, always respected, especially in the 18th century when, after an inspection, attention was drawn to the terrible conditions in the library. Many valuable parts of the collection were also destroyed during wars and invasions. The Wolbrom parish archive was mentioned for the first time in the second half of the 17th century. Initially, the archive was located in the chambers of the prior, then in the monastery library above the church sacristy. The resources of the archive mainly include parish registers. Most of the documentation comes from the time of the partitions. The parish archive also contains documents not connected with the activities of the parish. There is even a royal document from the time of Stanislaw II August Poniatowski concerning the local guild of furriers. The observations carried out in the archive and library allow important recommendations to be made concerning the safeguarding of the collection with suitable storage conditions.

Abstract:
The article examines the contribution of the representatives of the Samarin family to the development of the Parish issue in the Russian Empire in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The issue of expanding the rights of the laity in the sphere of parish self-government was one of the most debated problems of Church life in that period. The public discussion was initiated by D.F. Samarin (1827-1901). He formulated the “social concept” of the parish and parish reform, based on Slavophile views on society and the Church. In the beginning of the twentieth century his eldest son F.D. Samarin who was a member of the Special Council on the development the Orthodox parish project in 1907, and as such developed the Slavophile concept of the parish. In 1915, A.D. Samarin, who took up the position of the Chief Procurator of the Most Holy Synod, tried to make his contribution to the cause of the parish reforms, but he failed to do so due to his resignation.

Abstract:
The present article starts from the fact that the parish constitutes the eucharistic family, the small eucharistic centre, where the redeeming action of the broader Church takes place, calling everyone to the synaxis. The parish becomes a place of incarnation of the Church, homeland for the Christian. Without a parish, everything is oppressive sacred idealism, an un-incarnated romantic utopia, a community that fails to reflect the person of Christ. Despite this, the author emphasises the fact that in the modern era, with the rapid expansion of urban centres, the parish seems to be gradually losing its character, and the bonds of its members appear to be weakening. The parish is being transformed into an impersonal gathering of unknown “Christians”. The author emphasizes the need to reflect on the role of the parish in the city nowadays, or in the countryside, within a Local Orthodox Church. In the latter case, the author proposes that the pastorship of a rural parish must be centred on two axes, the family and the community.

Abstract:
The article presents the results of own research on the environmental determinants of women's activity for the parish community. They were carried out on a representative sample of 400 inhabitants of rural areas of Podkarpacie and were aimed at obtaining answers to the question about the relationship between specific environmental variables and activities undertaken by respondents in the parish. The research used a quantitative strategy, a type of verification study. The method of diagnostic survey was used, using the survey technique. The hypotheses were subjected to empirical verification using statistical tools. It was found that the respondents were involved in activities for the benefit of the parish, especially in the dimension of material support for the parish (financial support). To a lesser extent, the respondents were active in other areas of parish life, e.g.: through individual work for it. It has also been shown that the independent variables (environmental features) taken into account differentiate selected aspects of activity for the benefit of the parish. Abstract:
Discussions about parish institution today often end in its crisis. It seems that this institution is unable to carry out its functions in the modern world. On the other hand, so far, despite the emergence of new movements in the Church that are becoming the reference point in the life of some Christians, there is no institution that has replaced the parish yet. The parish remains a reference institution that shows the real face of the Church in society. On 20 July 2020, the Congregation for the Clergy published an instruction entitled “The pastoral conversion of the Parish community in the service of the evangelising mission of the Church”. This paper is an invitation to read and reflect on the pastoral conversion in parish life that focuses on the context of Asian Church priority to be a participatory Church and communion of communities. By applying the analytical method, we will examine the content of the instruction in confront with the context. In this way, finally we can find out the main points of how this instruction encourages pastoral conversion which should become the concern for the Asian Church. Therefore, this work helps us to understand better the importance of community conversion which means becoming a missionary community with the following two levels: all different parish communities that build up the entire parish and the parish community itself.

Abstract:
Diseases, health status, and mortality in urban and rural environments: The case of Catholics and Lutherans in 19th-century Greater PolandThe aim of the study is to show in the mortality measures calculated for Catholics and Lutherans from 19th-century Greater Poland: 1) stratification dependent on the size of place of residence, 2) stratification dependent on religious denomination in population centres of various size. The data on mortality are drawn from Catholic and Lutheran parish death registers: from Poznań (the poor Catholic St. Margaret's Parish, the wealthy St. Mary Magdalene's Parish, and the Lutheran Holy Cross Parish), small towns such as Leszno (the Lutheran Holy Cross Parish) and Kalisz (the Catholic St. Joseph's Parish) as well as the rural Lutheran parish of Trzebosz and the Catholic parish of Dziekanowice. Stratification in the causes of death and mortality measures among Catholics and Lutherans from 19th-century Greater Poland depends on the size of their places of residence and broadly understood ecological conditions. Smaller deleterious effects of the environment were observed in the rural areas and small towns and, therefore, a relationship between death rate values and religious denominations is more visible in these than in Poznań. The cultural benefits accruing to the Lutherans and Catholics living in 19th century Poznań were insufficient to reduce the high infant death rate.

Abstract:
This paper examines pastoral practice of the Academic Parish of Prague in compliance with its specific character – service to people from academia. Data analysis from qualitative interviews and document-based research identified two major areas of ministry – pastoral care (ad intra) and public engagement (ad extra) – and positioned the community somewhat between a parish ministry and chaplaincy. Specifically, empirical research suggested that people opt for this parish because it acknowledges their social, spiritual and intellectual needs seriously and relevantly, and addresses its members with respect. Theologically, it maintains there is a compatibility between the parish offer and expectations of people, and argues that the parish interpreted and handled its specific mission – addressing urban and educated people – relevantly and authentically.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the problem of parish reform in the period of revolutionary processes and the beginning of the Civil War in the South of Russia. The author analyses the church-public perception of the position, functions and role of the parish in the church, public and political life through the prism of the discussion which took place on the eve and during the All-Russian Local Council of 1917– 1918 and appeared in church periodicals. One can trace the process of the parish revival and the acceptance of the sobor solution to the parish problem by the ecclesiastical community of Southern Russia. Church revival was connected to a revival of the parish on the basis of sobor-canonical principles, with the first Christian community serving as its ideal. The main activity on this path was the formation of parish councils, the activity of which went far beyond the inner boundaries of the parish. Its functions were to be extended to the level of a grass-roots zemstvo, to ensure the legal and economic security of the parishioners, and to influence the surrounding society.

Abstract:
The library of the parish church in Szadek – being the seat of Szadek Decanate and belonging in 1818 to Gniezno Archdiocese – was referred to, with listings of all the books that it contained, in parish documents (canonical visitations of the parish) of 1762, 1779 and 1788. It was mainly used by local priests. After less than half a century of existence, it was destroyed, probably in a church fire in 1802. The registers list some 35 books, most likely in printed form. The themes of this collection of books point to it being the property of one of the parish priests, donated after his death to the parish. Nearly half of the books are works useful in preaching: collections of sermons and examples. The remaining publications, too, are intended to help priests in their pastoral work, religious instruction and preaching. Among Polish parish libraries of the 18th century, this collection falls within the category of small libraries (1–50 books).

Abstract:
Western scholarship on secularization takes into account “churching” — expansion of the parish base to accommodate population growth and migration. This study examines churching in Imperial Russia, with a focus on two questions: how well (when) did the Orthodox Church expand its parish base, and how did that churching impact the aspirations and activity of parishioners? Perhaps even more than its peers in Europe, the Russian Orthodox Church faced a growing challenge in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: on the one hand, enormous social change, but on the other hand, limited resources to adapt. This paper suggests that the Russian response was belated, but intense, with churching sharply accelerating after 1880. The local parish, almost alone, had to finance churching, yet continuing paying substantial diocesan levies that mainly served the interests of the clergy. The double burden was too much. Parishioners, encouraged to organize and mobilize since the 1860s, became increasingly assertive in claiming their right to govern the parish, to control its finances, and to choose its clergy. In short, churching led to revolution in the church.

Abstract:
The article aims to reveal the possibilities of the data contained in the parish visitations in determining the average household size of the residents of Šiauliai parish. Firstly, the data on visitations allows us to learn about the number of residents who came to catholic confession and those who did not come to catholic confession. Secondly, the source allows us to learn about the number of households in all parish settlements. The data is important for calculating the number of residents in the settlements and in the whole parish. The data on the number of residents allows us to calculate the size of the households in separate settlements and in the whole parish. Moreover, this data can be used for the reconstruction of parish geographical territory. On the other hand, the data on parish visitations can be incorrect as usually statistical information was rewritten from the earlier sources. Considering Šiauliai catholic parish visitations, it should be noted that later visitations were rewritten from the visitations of the year 1820, thus this research only deals with the situation of the year 1820. The analysis revealed that the geographical territory of Šiauliai parish has not significantly changed since the middle of the 17th century. Also, those settlements that were the largest in terms of population in the middle of the 17th century, remained the largest in the first half of the 19th century. After calculating the ratio of those who went to confession and those who did not go, it was found that in the visitations of Šiauliai parish, only the number of Catholics was given, and in some settlements far from the center of the parish, there was a high number of those who did not go to confessions, most likely it indicates pastoral problems, and not the population of other denominations. On average, 9.7 people lived in one household in Šiauliai parish, 7.98 lived in Šiauliai city, 14.5 lived in Kužiai town, and 11.35 lived in Meškuičiai town. After comparing the results of the research with the data of other cities and towns, it can be said that larger cities were characterized by smaller households, while small towns were characterized by larger households. Meanwhile, it is not easy to compare the obtained research results with the household data of the Central and Eastern European population, because the research results are highly dependent on the concept of the household. Nevertheless, it can be said that the average household size of Šiauliai parish was close to the household size of the residents of Nereta (Latvia).

Abstract:
AbstractThis article traces the significant yet largely unexplored experience of transnationalism in the lived religious experiences of Mexican and Mexican American Catholics by focusing on the parish as a central unit of analysis. Within this analysis, the parish unit is rethought as an analytical unit in two important regards. First, the way in which parish life in rural Mexico has been predominately conceptualized as one whose rhythm revolves around a traditional ritual calendar centered on community celebrations of particular religious holidays and localized votive devotions needs to be replaced. Based on research from an ongoing historical case study (1890-present) of a central Mexican parish, Nuestra Señora del Rosario in Coeneo, Michoacán, and on other parishes, the rhythm of parish life has clearly shifted to celebrations of marriages and baptisms. These religious celebrations of marriages and baptisms in Mexico have become the focal point of identity and community in this transnational Mexican and Mexican American experience. These sacraments of baptism and marriage have multiple meanings that not only include universal Catholic doctrines but also notions of family, community, and a particular appreciation for the sacralized landscape of their Mexican parish. Second, notions of parish boundaries as fixed and parish affiliation as singular must be reconsidered because many Mexicans and Mexican Americans living in the United States consider themselves to be active members in at least two parishes: one in Mexico and one or more in the United States.

Abstract:
Purpose: To explore the personal experiences, challenges, and practices of parish nurses in their communities. Method/Design: The overall study used a mixed methods concurrent embedded design to describe parish nurses’ experiences with diabetes education and preconception counseling in their practice. Also included were descriptions of generalized practices. Therefore, this current report will focus on these broader experiences. Focus group data were collected using face-to-face, teleconference, and video conferencing formats with 48 nurses who consider themselves to be parish nurses and analyzed with content analysis. Findings: Four qualitative themes were identified in the data: (1) Gaining Entry Through Trust, (2) Enhanced Focus on Spiritual Caring, (3) Accomplishing Much Despite Challenges, and (4) Practice Making a Difference. Parish nurses are uniquely situated to provide holistic care for the mind, body, and spirit of their patients. Despite the many positive aspects, parish nurses experience unique challenges, such as funding their practice and working independently. Conclusions: The parish nurses can play a vital role in providing holistic care to patients in a faith-based community. Future work is needed to address the challenges of parish nurses such as access to continuing education programs related to health topics of concern to their community members.

Abstract:
Attempt is made to trace the work and role of the parish clerk from menial monastic beginnings to its emergence in the thirteenth century as a canonically recognised office–probably the oldest unordained office at the parochial level in the English church and the last vestigial survival of Minor Orders. In parallel is developed the story of the coming together of London parish clerks as a guild or fraternity, radically distinguished from the merchant, craft and service guilds, and of the grant to that fraternity of ‘clerici et literati’– with its unique livery and ethos–of the first of its six Royal Charters. The duties and activities of mediaeval parish clerks and the constitution of their Company are considered along with its possessions, especially its Bede Roll. Attention is paid to the understanding of Purgatory and the devastating effects of the Chantries Act 1548. The parish clerk's changing role following the Reformation is examined within the prevailing continuities and discontinuities. New duties in relation to Registration and Bills of Mortality are marked in addition to the parish clerk's increasing social involvement in the civil affairs of the parish. The decline in the parish clerk's duties from the nineteenth century is studied and its effect on the office, the London Company and the ancient parishes of old London, from which the Company is exclusively recruited.

Abstract:
Žigmund Stojka is among the important bishops of Hungary in the 18th century. The article deals with the period 1729 – 1733, when he was the parish priest of Košice. His work in Košice is marked by a dispute with the city municipality. In 1730, Stojka wrote a nine-point complaint to the municipality, in which he attacked the illegal situation that prevailed in the Košice parish. Under his predecessors, the city established the function of a church inspector, to whom it entrusted the management of the income and expenses of the parish church, which the parish priest, as the rector of the church, did not have the opportunity to examine. The city thereby excluded him from all management of the temporal affairs of the parish and left him only the service of masses and the administration of the sacraments, which was contrary to both canonical and secular law. The investigation of this complaint was entrusted to the Imperial-Royal Commission. We learn what conclusions were reached from a document from 1755, when the Košice parish priest at the time filed a similar complaint as Stojka at the time. He referred to the conclusions of the Imperial-Royal Commission, according to which the church treasury should have two locks, the key of one should be held by the inspector and the other by the parish priest. This complaint was upheld in full.

Abstract:
The complexity of the community structure in the context of the parish Church impacts the parish life and poses a challenge for every component of the Church. In light on this, the researcher intends to find a strategy to empower parishes in order to build the future parish. In the pursuit of empowerment, leaders play a vital role. In a parish, the role of a leader is typically assumed by the parish priests. An expected leader is one who practices servant leadership. Servant leadership can influence extra-role behavior so that it can encourage people to be actively involved in building Church services. Following the establishment of a leader with servant leadership, the question that arises now is how to empower the community. First, it is essential to develop a clear vision and mission for the parish which will provide it with a sense of direction and purpose. Next, the key elements of a parish that is poised to progress and develop are the empowerment of its human resources through the cultivation of friendship, care, trustworthiness, and openness to diversity. Some of these elements are essential for empowering the people in the light of the complexity of the times that need to be addressed through people empowerment. This empowerment is a long-term strategic program to strengthen parishes.
