Abstract:

In urban areas, road transportation is the main source of pollutants, and weather impacts spatiotemporal variation of air quality. In this paper, we demonstrate the spatiotemporal variabilities of particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) and NO2 in the south of Paris, with an emphasis on the comparison of air pollutant levels between COVID-19 lockdown and non-lockdown days according to meteorological conditions. The influence of COVID-19 lockdowns could be region-specific. Thus, it is worthwhile to conduct investigations across different regions and via different methodologies. This manuscript contains data that could be relied upon to evaluate available options for mitigation of urban air pollution. Using Airparif data and mobile survey data collected by Aeroqual 500 sensors, this study confirms that road traffic seems to be the determining factor of air quality in the southern part of Paris. The daily average concentrations of NO2, PM2.5 and PM10 calculated in 2020 show a strong spatiotemporal variability explained by the type of weather on the one hand and by the proximity of emission sources on the other hand. Mobile surveys show that during lockdowns in 2020, when the weather was stable, in 13th arrondissement of Paris, NO2 values exceeded 250 µg/m3 with PM10 values over 70 µg/m3, mainly in three locations: the area between Rue Tolbiac and Rue Nationale, along Rue de Chevaleret, and on Boulevard Périphérique.

Abstract:

Several years after the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic, we are now used to new ways of delivering conferences, new codes of conduct and online etiquette. We are now familiar with the good practices of holding virtual meetings, have improved our knowledge of blended learning and have perhaps challenged the future directions of group debates. However, are virtual interactions within these new technological tools effective substitutions for real interactions? How about rituals and levels of presence? Have these new constraints increased the separation and segregation of audiences? This article aims to explore the implications of the ethics of digital justice when confronted with a particularly traumatic event; that is, the trial of 14 defendants accused of planning and executing attacks on the Stade de France, the Bataclan theatre and bars and terraces in the 11th arrondissement of Paris on Friday, 13 November 2015. The trial is referred to in France by the acronym V13, which stands for Vendredi (Friday) 13, a particularly nightmarish emblem indelibly marked by extreme violence.

Elle a combattu avec succès la construction d’une autoroute dans le quartier, obtenu la limitation de la construction de tours d’habitation, essaie de contrôler que le réhabilitation des immeubles soit faite en fonction des intérêts de la population du quartier. L’Atelier populaire d’architecture et d’urbanisme du Marais (APAUM) regroupe des architectes qui travaillent avec les habitants pour s’opposer aux projets de rénovation de certains îlots du quartier par des promoteurs privés, mais aussi par la société publique de H.L.M. Toutes les interventions sont élaborées en étroite association avec les habitants.

Abstract:

Methods for determining the exact time by artisans and merchants of Paris in the 13th century considered in the paper on the material of the regulations of the “Book of Crafts” and the statutes on Parisian trade duties. The focus is on “hours” (“hour” as a synonym for “time”, the first, third and ninth hours of the dayetc.) and their relationship with other criteria that determined the start and end of the working day: the bell ringing, the cry of the herald, the actions of other artisans and townspeople. This allowed the author to correct ideas about natural cycles and “church time” as key ways of determining time, to show the need of urban artisansand merchants for a more accurate accounting and definition of time in general and its individual momentsduring the day, the need to use different methods of estimating the time of day and, accordingly, of working time, the need to overcome the subjectivity of the workshop owner or client.

Abstract:

This article questions the notion that migrant networks provided an incentive to travel by furnishing both contacts upon arrival and continued assistance for those who remained. It focuses on newcomers to Paris from Brittany from 1875 to 1925. Sources include (a) memoirs and interview data from large-scale studies, (b) information on marriage patterns in the XIVe arrondissement and the industrial suburb of Saint-Denis, and (c) information on the witnesses to these marriages. Although each source reveals a different configuration of contacts, together they suggest the importance of ongoing family ties and significant contacts formed from ‘weak ties’ after arrival.

Paris est, avec peut-être New York comme seul rival, un des « personnages » les plus illustres de l’histoire du cinéma. Des « vues Lumière » jusqu’aux pérégrinations des héros de la Nouvelle Vague, de la psychogéographie de Debord aux cartographies affectives de Rohmer, en passant par les Paris vu par (1965, 1985) et autres Paris je t’aime (2006), peu de villes ont été autant filmées, et peu de villes ont eu autant d’influence sur l’imaginaire cinématographique. Il est notamment fascinant de constater la migration de cet imaginaire au sein des cinématographies asiatiques contemporaines. Cet article se penche sur le film Night and Day (2008) de Hong Sang-soo, tourné principalement dans le XIVe arrondissement à Paris, seul film de ce cinéaste sud-coréen à avoir été réalisé à l’extérieur de son pays. Le cinéma de Hong Sang-soo tourne autour d’un périmètre très limité et obsessif de lieux (cafés, bars, appartements), de quartiers et de situations (beuveries, triangles amoureux, vacances). Night and Day, avec le XIVe arrondissement comme toile de fond, en offre une énième variation, délocalisée, certes, mais totalement marquée par la présence du familier. Plutôt que d’être une expérience de la ville fondée sur le choc des cultures ou la rencontre avec l’autre, Night and Day propose un regard tout à fait décomplexé sur Paris, attentif aux « choses vues » les plus triviales, et marqué par un attachement aux lieux ordinaires, au commun, au quotidien, aux parcours du héros (qui n’y rencontre, à peu de choses près, que des Coréens). Par ailleurs, comme pour Tsai Ming-liang (Et là-bas, quelle heure est-il ? [2001], Visage [2009]) ou Hou Hsiao-hsien (Le Voyage du ballon rouge, 2007), l’appropriation de Paris est indissociable d’une culture cinéphilique (en l’occurrence, dans le cas de Hong Sang-soo, du cinéma de Rohmer). Il s’agira donc d’essayer de décrire les modes d’appropriation de l’espace de la ville dans ce film, et l’imaginaire culturel par lequel ils transitent.

Abstract Bed bugs, nocturnal ectoparasites adapted to feed on humans, have demonstrated a global resurgence since 1990s, presumably due to increased international travel and insecticide resistance. Resistance to insecticides has restricted the ability to manage bed bug populations. We evaluated the susceptibility of Cimex lectularius L. (Hemiptera: Cimicidae) collected from five districts in Paris against bendiocarb, a carbamate insecticide. The susceptible strain of C. lectularius from London included in our experiments as a control. Mortality of adult bed bugs was assessed after exposure to a fixed concentration of bendiocarb (80%) at intervals ranging from 15 min to 72 h. Mortality in samples ranged from 14% in Bobigny to 0% in Paris 15th arrondissement and Drancy. Bioassays with bendiocarb insecticide on C. lectularius revealed high levels of resistance in Paris.

Abstract:

The space invested by contemporary art galleries is of utmost importance. Not only is it essential to have suitable premises, but they must also be in the right place: The physical address carries a lot of weight. The benefits to galleries of being concentrated in the same areas are twofold: They are close to their competitors, which means they are close to the art market, and thus, by their collective presence, can boost the market by encouraging collectors to go to the same places built up as art districts. Moreover, the district’s qualifying function comes about through the collective construction of this grouping of galleries from which it benefits. Today in Paris, it is the Marais neighborhood—a sector that started developing in the 1970s but even more in the 1980s and 1990s—that epitomizes the place to be for contemporary art galleries. The implantation of contemporary galleries in Paris clearly results from a historical process that led them from the 8th arrondissement to the Marais, stopping briefly at Saint-Germain-des-Prés (or the 6th arrondissement) mostly for small avant-garde structures. Studying the implantation—here in Paris—of contemporary art galleries over time illustrates the dynamics that gird the installation choices and also shows how alive the urban fabric is. Galleries enter the transformations of the urban fabric, and when they are numerous enough, they also participate directly in its development.

Abstract:

Beyond the famous Porte de Saint-Denis, there is a “multiethnic” world, the Turks, the Kurds, the Arabs, the Indians, the Pakistanis cohabit and run their business in the same economic area. Despite the multi ethnical image, that district has a common reputation: “quartier turc”. In this purpose, this paper aims to present the presence of various social groups at the 10th arrondissement of Paris, particularly those who come from Turkey. The restaurants, the barbershops, the halal butcher shops or the grocery stores, placed side by side, show the diversity of the multiple forms of their economic integration. Turkish origin individuals who live and work at the 10th district, have different backgrounds, stories and reasons to settle down in Paris. In the light of this, we argue three types of migration from Turkey: first, work migration during the late 60’s; second, political refugees due to political context in the 80’s; and third cultural radiance (rayonnement culturel), as a new model, which encourages the educational and cultural mobilization of high skilled individuals. Each type of migration is related to the different models of the French migration policies. In this respect, we think that the field research based on the in-depth interviews will help us to discover their “migrant” universe. Focusing on a specific neighbor, known as “quartier turc”, this study attempts to analyze the migration stories, and the social, economic and political integration of those Turkish origin social groups at the 10th arrondissement of Paris.

Abstract:

Une unité de soins psychiatriques a été mise en place dans le 16e arrondissement de Paris en janvier 2013. Elle est rattachée au pôle 16e arrondissement de l’hôpital Sainte-Anne. Cette structure s’adresse aux patients résidant à Paris dans le 16e arrondissement et est une alternative à l’hospitalisation. Elle permet d’assurer des soins psychiatriques médicaux et paramédicaux au domicile. La durée du suivi est fixée au début de la prise en charge et un projet de soin est établi avec le patient. L’admission du patient est prononcée par les psychiatres coordonnateurs sur proposition du psychiatre référent du patient. L’équipe soignante de PSYDOM est composée de deux psychiatres, cinq infirmières et une cadre sous la responsabilité du chef de service. Les membres de cette équipe travaillent tous dans cette unité à temps partiel. Cette nouvelle structure permet de recevoir des patients en phase de stabilisation, sortant d’une hospitalisation ou bien des patients en phase d’acutisation de leur pathologie, suivis au CMP, ne souhaitant pas être hospitalisés ou encore des patients adressés par le service d’accueil et d’urgence de l’hôpital Ambroise-Paré (AP–HP) de Boulogne (92). Les patients pris en charge bénéficient d’un projet thérapeutique individualisé et d’un contrat de soin. Ils sont favorables à ce mode de suivi ambulatoire. Depuis l’ouverture de la structure, 23 patients ont été pris en charge, 20 femmes et 3 hommes. Cent quatre-vingt-quatre VAD infirmières et 51 VAD infirmières + psychiatre ont été réalisées. Nous proposons dans notre poster d’exposer notre mode de travail et notre bilan sur six mois de fonctionnement.

Almost as soon as Paris was liberated from Nazi Occupation on 25 August 1944, Yiddish actors took back the stages on which they had once performed. In fact, on 20 December 1944, while war and the Holocaust still raged, a small cohort of actors produced what they advertised in the Naye prese as the “first grand performance by the ‘Yiddish folks-bine.’” This performance was to take place at the four-hundred-seat Théâtre Lancry, a performance space located in Paris's 10th arrondissement, not far from the Place de la République and the Marais. “Lancry,” as it was known, had played host to Yiddish theatre as early as 1903 and, during the interwar years, it was the center of Parisian Yiddish cultural activity: dozens of theatre performances occurred there and it was where the Kultur-lige pariz was based, among other institutions. During the postwar years, it also went by the name Théâtre de la République after 1947 and Théâtre du Nouveau-Lancry after 1951, but many still referred to it simply as “Lancry.”

L’année 2019 a été l’occasion de commémorer le décès d’Alfred Houdé, né à Vincelles en 1854, et diplômé pharmacien en 1880. La même année, il achète la pharmacie Vée, 42 faubourg Saint-Denis à Paris. Comme beaucoup de pharmaciens de son époque, Houdé s’intéresse aux alcaloïdes et principes actifs des plantes. Après avoir étudié l’aloïne et la boldine, il réalise un travail sur la vératrine et les Veratrum, ce qui lui vaut le prix Orfila décerné par l’Académie de médecine en 1884. En cette année 1884, il est le premier à obtenir la colchicine sous forme cristallisée. Son journal de comptes de l’officine en 1885 montre qu’il a déjà une petite activité industrielle, car il a vendu 1 383 flacons d’élixir de colchicine. Il s’attaque également à caractériser et définir les propriétés de la spartéine découverte en 1851 par Stenhouse dans le genêt à balais. Sa passion pour la chimie végétale le conduit à fonder un journal, la Revue thérapeutique des alcaloïdes, qui paraîtra jusqu’en 1957. Malgré ses activités professionnelles très prenantes, Houdé s’engage comme administrateur du bureau de bienfaisance du Xe arrondissement de Paris, est membre du comité d’hygiène, secrétaire de la Chambre syndicale des pharmaciens de Paris, etc. Il meurt le 10 octobre 1919.

The “Book of Crafts” of Paris (Livre des métiers) demonstrates the exceptional variety of highly specialized crafts, the multiplicity of social and professional traditions formed by the 13th century, and the variability of approaches to resolving complex issues of organizing the activities of artisans and merchants in a medieval metropolis. The author singles out the set of information of the “Book of Crafts” about apprentices and vocational training, which was exceptional in terms of volume and content; studies the general quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the set on apprenticeship in the Parisian statutes. The training in the 13th century almost completely included the next stage of professionalization like gaining experience, and the end of apprenticeshipdid not end with a professional test, which sometimes arose when an apprentice became a teacherhimself. The author emphasizes the fundamental value of apprenticeshipin the system of admission to the profession and the exceptional importance of the attitude towards vocational training reflected in the Parisian registers for the history of the medieval craft.

"A Short Modern History of Studying Sacrobosco’s De sphaera. The treatise generally known as De sphaera offered at the beginning of the 13th century a general image of the structure of the cosmos. In this paper I’m first trying to present a triple stake with which this treaty of Johannes de Sacrobosco (c. 1195 - c. 1256). This effort is intended to draw a context upon the treaty on which I will present in the second part of this paper namely, a short modern history of studying this treaty starting from the beginning of the 20th century up to this day. The first stake consists in the well-known episode of translation of the XI-XII centuries in the Latin milieu of the Greek and Arabic treaties. The treatise De sphaera taking over, assimilating and comparing some of the new translations of the texts dedicated to astronomy. The documentation of N.M. itself might have been made in the 13th century. The text consists of 47 epitomes, which are grouped according to word figure and sentence figure. The method of defining the figure is identical to that of Paris. 2087: the examples are Christian and identical to those of 2087. Thus, there is no doubt that N.M. belongs to the tradition of Paris. 2087. The sequence of epitomes, however, differs from that of 2087, because N.M. is recorded according to the sequence of Paris. 1741: the scribe of N.M. may have tried to address the lack of Christian examples in Paris. 1741. As for authorship, it is not easy to know who the author is, but on this question, I have found an interesting example from Basil of Caesarea (AD 330–379). Based on this, I would like to suggest that the author of N.M. might be a student of Basil, who was an excellent teacher of rhetoric. From this, it can be assumed that N.M. might have been composed in the 5th century.

The environmental, economic and social challenges re-launched in the European Union Agendas (e.g., Horizon 2020 and Europe 2020–2030) have recently returned to being highly debated. In particular, policies and interventions in the field of social housing (SH) are still remaining crucial issues for urban regeneration. These interventions are aimed to combine sustainability criteria with architectural, urban and environmental quality. In this context, our goal in this article is to provide an innovative perspective on the topic highlighting the positive returns enabled by the logic of the social impact approach (SIA). A pilot project is proposed to be performed in the VI arrondissement of Paris. Starting from the French regulatory context and the requirements set by the “Paris Affordable Housing Challenge” competition, the levers of social finance for new social demands and the levers of incentives are applied to a real case. The research results show that the application of the emerging principles of social impact investing (SII) in areas difficult to access in the private market had positive returns. The final aim of the article is to outline guidelines that consider the quality, management and generation of the social impact requirements highlighted in the proposal to facilitate the application of the SIA to other interventions and contexts.

ABSTRACT For the 13th-century music writer known as Anonymous IV, the craft of music writing was a primary literary concern, though one virtually ignored by previous modern writers on music. The importance of music writing to Anonymous IV is evident from the variety and quantity of references in his treatise, many of which are found in its central second chapter. This information-rich chapter includes a history of music notation and a miniature handbook for music scribes. The Anonymous is indebted to the then recent surge in production of how-to manuals of all kinds; his miniature handbook for music scribes partakes of their style and vocabulary. This practical work of Anonymous IV is tied to the revival of Euclidean geometry in the liberal arts curriculum at Paris. The specialized geometric terms he uses are attested in numerous sources, including student handbooks from the university. It is possible that the anonymous writer came under the spell of Roger Bacon, also an Englishman at the University of Paris in the late 13th century, whose writing and pedagogy reveal several similarities with the music treatise of Anonymous IV.

Dans ce contexte, comment cette dernière est-elle construite et travaillée par les entrepreneurs ? À partir d’une enquête de terrain menée entre 2017 et 2020 sur les restaurants du quartier du canal Saint-Martin, situé dans le X e arrondissement de Paris, l’article a pour but de mettre en lumière le processus de construction de la diversité, allant de pair avec la construction d’une altérité (in)acceptable. Nous étudions d’abord le travail de blanchité réalisé par les entrepreneurs minoritaires racisés qui ouvrent un restaurant représentant leur propre origine ethnique et/ou nationale. En tant que groupe minoritaire dans l’Hexagone, l’identification entre leur origine et l’offre culinaire oscille entre les frontières internes et externes d’une conception de soi traversée par l’expérience du racisme. Contrastant avec cette première vision, l’article s’intéresse ensuite au travail réalisé par les entrepreneurs blancs, racialisés comme groupe majoritaire et issus de classes supérieures, qui ouvrent des restaurants dont les offres culinaires représentent une culture « extra-occidentale ». Ce contraste permet d’élucider le mécanisme de la construction d’une altérité (in)acceptable, qui s’articule avec les rapports sociaux de classe et de race.

Visa também mostrar como certos colégios particulares podem ser vistos como substitutos da autoridade familiar, encarregados de transmitir um modelo de educação que se torna mais homogêneo pelo fato de pais e professores compartilharem a mesma concepção dos papéis da escola e da família, além de manterem seus alunos isolados de crianças de outras classes sociais, não somente durante o horário de aula, mas também (e esta é uma das "especialidades" deste tipo de colégio) durante a maioria das atividades de lazer, pelas quais são responsáveis.

In autumn 2009, a «scavenger square» was opened at the Porte Montmartre in the 18th arrondissement of Paris as an institutional response to the requests of street vendors who gained the support of residents and militants in advocating for a possibility to sell their products legally. This experimental space monitored by social workers authorizes nearly a hundred vendors to resell scavenged goods. Our article proposes an analysis of its practical implementation as a sort of street bureaucracy. After a presentation of the multiple worlds which make up the informal market, we provide an overview of the political reluctances towards this legalization of street vending. We then focus on the social workers’ difficulties in running an institutional outpost in a world which initially developed autonomously. We will underline how the emerging misunderstandings and contradictions led them to readjust their practices and redefi ne the objectives of their mission.

Cependant, leurs caractéristiques mécaniques sont peu connues, et leur mécanisme de gonflement est complexe car il dépend des caractéristiques physico-chimiques des minéraux constituant ces argiles, ainsi que de leurs états mécaniques et hydriques. Quelques retours d’expériences, parfois accidentels, ont montré des déformations importantes de cette couche géologique, avec la présence locale de poches de sables ou de lithofaciès sableux. Afin de dimensionner correctement les ouvrages en contact avec cette couche, de nombreux essais in situ et en laboratoire ont été réalisés pour mieux appréhender le comportement de ces argiles plastiques. Cet article présente d’abord le contexte géologique et la synthèse des essais sur 3 zones représentatives sur les lignes 14 et 15, à savoir : le Coteau d’Issy à Issy-Les-Moulineaux (L15 Sud-Ouest), la vallée de la Bièvre à la Maison Blanche dans Paris 13e arrondissement (L14 Sud) et la vallée et les plateaux de la Marne à Saint-Maur et Créteil (L15 Sud-Est). Des analyses géotechniques des essais ont été ensuite effectuées zone par zone afin de mieux connaître les comportements mécanique et hydrique, ainsi que la variabilité spatiale, de ces argiles plastiques.
