Full textMore and more meadows, fallow lands, forests, ponds or river banks are being transformed in order to be used for outdoor leisure activities (walking, running, water sports, etc.). Hidden behind the increase in amenities (paths, benches, car parks, etc.), institutions and their agents have historically monopolized the management of these areas when transforming them into leisure “parks”. Whether they be elected councils, civil servants, private landowners or company directors, these public and/or private actors have created a wide range of responses within political and economic contexts that are favourable to these kinds of land transformations. The analysis is based on three case studies : a private estate owned by a French aristocratic family, a public park managed by a local Town Council and a leisure park run by a multinational sporting goods corporation. This study, undertaken for a doctoral thesis, shows that, despite differences that seemingly separate these parks together with their landholders, the creation of green leisure parks Whether they be elected councils, civil servants, follows a similar process of land institutionalizion. This specific process is hereby called the “leisurefication” of nature. Results show similar processes of labour division, reallocation and commodification of land

Full textOur research has as objective : understanding changes which are happening in our society, especially the bankruptcy of the logical and modern rationnal system and the event of a new way : " How happrehend and live in our world" which values things like spare time and spirit game, in a sensible and baroque perspective of this transition period we name the post modernism. By this way, the study of two kinds of amusement parks : the first one "Disneyland" present in three different continents, and the second one "The Palace" present in the cyberespace are gonna help un to understand this period of social transition where the perception of a linear and continous time is replaced by the cyclic time one, only considering the idea of the lived present at any moment and where the flow of the baroque and nomade games will be very important for the realization of an esthetic which gives more and more importance to activities doomed to the unusefulness of the dail life, to the feelings of belonging to a commmunity, to masks games, to a social theatricality and to a look for the other and escape which will use varied ways

Full textThe economic expansion of the last years in the country is a very important element that launched the development of leisure activities and allowed the population's mentality to change. These new tourists actually visit the natural mountain areas, especially the natural parks, created by the government, but in a total anarchy. The recent touristic planning brings about many social and economical problems, among which : - conflits between the local population and the people in charge of the planning - a deterioration of the landscape and the environment - an important unbalance between the touristic demand and offer. The major stake is now to look for concrete and effective measures in order to support, to reinforce and to balance the three purposes of a natural park, meaning : - the protection of nature - the economic development for the local population - the opportunity of a natural leisure space for the urban population

Full textIs there any NRP tourism in the uplands ? The NRP created in 1967 to satisfy the double aim of the nature protection and of local development. The tourism and leisure activities are following this logic : they're even more and more important in the policies that are being put in place in the NRP, but the humans and financial means devoted to it are a lot different from a Park another. Contributors are yet very present in the touristic area and the role of the parc is, in the case, delicate to define. Many elements could allow the existence of a specific tourism ("parc" products and label NRP). However, to admit the existence of a NRP tourism, the Parc would have to be known and recognized by the general public but NRP is not a decisive element in the choice of the vacation's destination. The problem of the NRP structure itself is also being put up, general-interest and non-specialist of one or another activity. The missing reglementary power for the technical staff also contributes to weaken the efficiency of the existing policy

Full textAs the number-one tourist destination in the United States, the Disney theme parks are asignificant cultural phenomenon and present a unique opportunity to evaluate mass communication inlight of its influence on the user’s behavior and practices. This study aims to provide an analysis of “Imagineering”—that is, the design of narrative environments in the Disney-branded theme parks. By examining the design processes at work in the parks, the analysis shows what stories theso-called “Imagineers” intend to tell as well as how these stories fulfill the requirements of narratives in the very environment of the parks. The park thus presents the image of a fictional world that reflects the values of American society in an objective form, and in so doing provides the conditions for conformity between the user and the environment. As the repository of subjective and psychological traits (memories, values), the narrative space of the park distributes the tasks at hand between the visitor and the environment. By assigning each its role, the park subjects their interaction to a pre-established script—so well that the visitor’s behaviorsand emotions take on the appearance of performances. Besides providing implicit instructions for the proper use of the parks, narratives also serve to mobilize various social agents and in doing so create new sociotechnical systems. Grand narratives of technical and economic progress have thus helped the company secure the collaboration of prominent American corporations as well as a specific legal status for its Florida resort, giving rise to a new production system

Full textDoes the mountain, omnipresent in the Korean landscape, still hold a place in this hyper-urban society? This thesis explores what it means to dwell in the mountains in contemporary South Korea, based on a field investigation conducted between 2019 and 2021 at Gyeryong Mountain, located in the province of South Chungcheong, at the crossroads of three cities: Daejeon, Gongju and Gyeryong. This thesis follows the disciplinary tradition of cultural geography and employs a qualitative, ethno-geographic approach to observe ways of living—specifically, the practices, uses, social linkages, and the economic, identity, and emotional connections of individuals and groups to the mountains. Mount Gyeryong is an urban mountain shaped by the expansion of neighboring cities and the development of tourism. Its transformations are both morphological and functional. The concept of dwelling, as described in this thesis, involves a plurality of actors engaged at various scales in its planning and enhancement: the national park, which plays a key role at Mount Gyeryong as a state actor, two local hiking associations representing civil society that initiated the creation of hiking trails (Daejeondullesangiritgi and Gyeryongsandullegil), the pottery village of Mount Gyeryong, which keeps the art of Cheolhwabuncheong ceramics alive, and the Lee Sam-pyeong Study Association, which works towards the rehabilitation in Korea of the potter Lee Sam-pyeong, who was captured during the Japanese invasions in the 16th century. The heritage preservation of Mount Gyeryong is driven by a national policy focused on conservation, tourism development of natural spaces, and environmental education through the national park. It also stems from civic mobilizations within society and an entrepreneurial ambition to promote the mountain's unique ceramic cultural heritage. These dynamics reflect the current ways of inhabiting mountains in South Korea: its urban, heritage, and tourism investment is a pervasive phenomenon

Full textThe Musée Grévin was inaugurated with great pomp on 5th June 1882. Arthur Meyer, the founder, wanted to create a popular attraction and a money-business. The role of Grévin, the designer, was insignificant. The Musée Grévin, adhered to wax-modelling traditions a thousand years old and soon became the only rival to Madame Tussaud's. The museum's ideal position on a Parisien Boulevard, enabled it to become a distraction equal to the theatre or panoramas. The popularity of the museum also owes much to Gabriel Thomas, whose family continued to direct the Musée Grévin for four generations. The morbid attraction of death and the wish to create historical and pedagogical scenes are a possible explanation for the lasting success of the institution, which at the height of its fame possessed seven franchised museums in France. Modernisation came in 1999, when the museum was bought by Asterix Group

Full textThis dissertation is based on a conceptualization approach of cinephilia, thanks to different reserach disciplines such as cinema economics, sociology of leisure, cultural studies or consumer behaviour, in order to better understand this phenomenon in the contemporary context. Unlike the theoritical propositions adopting a break-up posture, opposing yesterday’s cinephilia to today’s one or scholary to popular cinephilia, this dissertation makes the evolutive approach of the concept prevail, through the transition hypothesis to multiple cinephilias : regardless of the cultural context, contemporary cinephilias did not substitute a unique cinephilia, built on an idealized model of excessive love of cinema. A qualitative methodology based on the glaserian version of Grounded Theory is adopted. Theorization analysis of cinephiles perceptions and experiences in Tunis and Paris, led to the identification of different levels of the cinephile commitment, characterized by four dimensions (cognitive, affective, conative and social), and defined by individual and external factors. Cinephilia has multiplied and gone beyond consumption facilities and geographical boarders, being impregnated with individual and social specificities

Full textThis thesis, carried out within the framework of a contract C. I. F. R. E. , aimed to study the effects of social synchronizers on the levels and the variations day labourers and weekly magazines of the attention of children from 6 to 11 years in school situation and out-of-school. The attention and its variations were evaluated starting from tests of stopping of a number. We have been able to compare the levels and the variations of attention in various reception facilities apart from school time and the effects of their frequentation on the levels and the variations of the attention in class near 713 childrens. The results indicate a positive influence of the frequentation of the collective receptions on the installation and the evolution of the psychological rythmicity, results which must moderate and be moderated according to factors' such as the age and the zone of education of the school. The interest of the frequentation of the collective receptions for the psychological rythmicities of the child will be discussed

Full textBased on a important corpus of prostitutional literature, novels, memories, and police archives, this thesis in history questions tensions and draws links between legitimate and illegitimates sexualities. During the second half of the 19th, the diversity of the practices and discourses about sexuality shows the plurality of prostitution's representations in the social imagination. Along a deep process of transformation of the Parisian society, this diversity also sheds light on the oppositions and confrontations between various social groups wich were trying to establish their conception of prostitution, sexuality, marriage and conjugality. The first part tackles the various paths of the prostitutes and the "femmes galantes", the "demi-monde", the student's sexuality and the rise of abolitionism. It demonstrates that the contestation of arranged marriages and the process of love marriages had transformes illegitimate sexualities before influencing marital and familial strategies. A phenomenon wich explains the multiplication of the "femmes entretenues" (kept women) and "parallel couples". The second part focusses on the evolution of the prostitutional activities with the emergence of Modern Paris. Thus, brothel's decline and prostitution's metamorphosis appear to be less linked to an evolution of the male sexual desire than to the rise of leisure and entertainment spaces to the extroversion of the Bourgeois lifestyle, as a consequence of the changes in the public space
Synowiecki, Jan. "Paris en vert. Jardins, nature et culture urbaines au XVIIIe siècle." Thesis, Paris, EHESS, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019EHES0123.
Full textThe public gardens of Paris from the eighteenth century provide study material through which various developments and the urban culture of the Enlightenment City can be understood. This study examines the apparent contradiction of creating natural spaces in the middle of a city, by studying their urban contexts, historic plant conservation practices, plant supplies, as well as the relationships between animal, people and plants. These various influences resulted in the creation of a special urban form of nature, full of negotiations, tensions and asymmetries. They are a field of study that is all the more interesting as the royal and princely authorities of the time were unable to impose their mark on these gardens without provoking resistance and protest. Against that background, a public garden policy was developed, which, for the first time, allowed the users and residents to fully participate in the creation of urban, green spaces. This study also aims to improve our understanding of the relationship between gardens and the cities that surround them, in a context where borders seem increasingly fluid, and to rethink urban culture, based on the nature of its green spaces

Full textAGames of chance and gambling ( such as backing horses, raffles, slot machines represent an important phenomen in our society. A sociological analysis which connects the objective data of socially discriminated gaming procedures with the connotations involved in the act of gambling shows that such games reactivate behaviours in which belief, specific rationalities and peculiar symbolizations intertwine. If indeed different types prevail among the range of the observed behaviours and representations ( notably the purpose of winning money, or the superstitions attitude towards chance) the gambler's conduct reveals a more essential quest which allows the link between the practice of ordinary game and that of the subject's existential game face to the world and the human condition. At the same time, if a historical approach forbids us to impute the present gaming inflation to strictly circumstantial causes, we are witnessing a particular setting up which brings about a new definition of the notion of game

Full textMoney games are today the center of the attention through a burning public debate. They are usually depicted as the origin of many vices and therefore stimulate a lot of worrying from society, thus the increasing broadcasting in the major medias of their incriminated connection to addiction diseases.Addiction has been growingly associated to gambling since the 1980’s : the money games are indeed more and more denunciated for being a real threat to the individuals who excessively enjoy this special hobby. This point of view is not new and is closely connected to the Old Regime’s widely spread opinions. Nevertheless, at this specific time period, money games were mainly rejected for their social and moral downsides : not only they stood for family issues but they were also incriminated as inviting the players to neglect valuable work and/or the established society rules and habits. There has been an in-between situation between the today’s widely spread gambling activities and the prosecution from the Old Regime. Indeed the government has repeatedly issued regulations to widen the gambling activities from 1836 when there was a law against money games till 1954 when the Tiercé was offcially created. This thesis work focuses on analysing the money games activities between these 2 milestones. The main point is to study the regulations variations about the money games and the reasons behind them. An other important aspect is to analyse the social usages of the time spent on money games through their various shapes and identities

Full textThe number of contemporary authors who write both for adults and children keeps rising, so much so that anglophone criticism has coined the term crosswriters to label the phenomenon. This work proposes to observe back-and-forth crossings between L’école des loisirs and Éditions de l’Olivier between 1991 and 2011. What motivate these crossings are important editorial stakes that attest to the crucial role played by publishers in guiding their authors. This dissertation will look more specifically to Christophe Honoré and Manuela Draeger (one of Antoine Volodine’s heteronyms). Both writers resort to crosswriting in singular ways as some of their children’s books and books for adults respond to one another to such an extent that what I call an “inter-diction” lodges itself in the interstice that divides their respective corpuses. This phenomenon of intratextuality, supported by a gesture of polyaddress, calls into question literature’s supposed intransitivity given that, in order to be decrypted, this suspended diction calls for a transgenerational reader. This inter-diction is the stage where are performed transitions from one age to another and where occur transmissions from one generation to the next. But it is also the site of what does not pass, of what punctures the work in an echo to individual or collective trauma. And if it is always the texts written for an adult readership that devolve to those for children what cannot be articulated in an adultocentered language, these transfers never seek to suture the abyss opened by intratextuality but rather explore through children’s literature alternative relations to language, thereby teaching us something about the linguistic beings that we are

Full textThe principal aim of our work consists of questioning the role of consumption activities and spaces in local strategies for attractiveness. How is the concept of consumption involved in the dynamics of territorial development, in particular, in terms of the relation among “image,” “marketing” and “attractiveness”? How can we understand “the concept of new consumption space” such as it is employed by the cities that desire to reinforce their attractiveness? To emphasize the importance of consumption spaces in policies for local attractiveness, following a theoretical discussion (part one), we present three case studies (part two) exploring the questions of territorial attractiveness and consumption space: 1. Our first example is “Bercy Village,” a new Parisian consumption space created within the framework of the ZAC Paris Bercy at the end of the 1990s. 2. Second, we examine projects and strategies of urban regeneration in Turin, Italy. Turin is in search of attractiveness by reinforcing the aspects of culture, leisure and tourism. The importance of the attraction of mega-events and the development of global urban strategies (the Spina Centrale project and Turin’s Strategic Plan) is particularly stressed in this example. 3. Finally, we turn to the restoration project of the Cheonggye river (Cheonggyecheon). Seoul, the capital of South Korea, recently restored a forgotten river in an old commercial district, notorious for traffic jams and pollution. Through this project, Seoul was able to create a new attractive riverwalk for city users
