Abstract:
Paranoid thought is one of the most common symptoms in psychiatric disorders. The Paranoia Checklist is a brief screening and diagnostic tool for clinical and subclinical paranoia. It has been used in research, clinical, and non-clinical settings. The Paranoia Checklist has not had its validity examined in university settings in Iran. A cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate the validation of the Farsi version of Paranoia Checklist in a randomized cluster sample of 365 Iranian volunteer college students selected from the Payame Noor University of Mashhad in Iran. Like a primal word, fixation operates in contradictory fashion: it is associated both with regression and futurity, petrified immobility and contingency. Fixation is Freud's name both for the primal origin of sexuality and the very word for what shuts sexuality down. In ‘A Case of Paranoia Running Counter to the Disease’,

Abstract:
Over the past few years, a new and deadly epidemic has stalked the land. Britain and the US, just like much of the rest of the world, are getting fat. Around 60 per cent of adults in the UK are heavier than they should be. It’s a similar story in the US, where two-thirds of adults are overweight or extremely overweight (obese). That’s a pretty shocking statistic, but we all know that keeping in shape when you’re trying to balance the demands of work and family life is tough. Who’s got time to get to the gym? Who has the energy to do more than heat up a ready meal after ten hours in the office? Besides, we all get bigger as we get older, don’t we? It’s a metabolism thing—isn’t it? But if you think the statistics for adults are alarming, wait till you find out how our kids are faring. In 2003, 27 per cent of children under 11 in England were either overweight or obese. In the US, where different methods to measure obesity are used, nearly 20 per cent of children aged 6 to 11 were classified as overweight or obese in 2004. The numbers have almost doubled in a decade. How did so many children get to be overweight before they’ve even reached the ripe old age of 11? How do you become overweight when so much of your day is taken up with charging round a playground or park, when you can’t drive, and when you’re not free—like the rest of us—to stuff your face at will with chocolate, crisps, and alcohol? The answer, of course, is a complex one. If adults are eating much less healthily than they used to, so are their kids. Instead of spending their evenings playing outside, children now have the delights of multi-channel television, computer games, and the Internet to choose from. And then there’s the fact that increasing numbers of us just won’t let our children outside on their own. Back in the mid 1970s, we were 6 years old.

Abstract:
On the evening of 15 February 1996, the 147,000 tonne tanker Sea Empress ran aground on rocks at the entrance to Milford Haven harbour in south-west Wales. (The ship’s pilot, it later emerged, had been making his first ever solo attempt at the manoeuvre.) Over the next week, 72,000 tonnes of crude oil and 360 tonnes of heavy fuel oil seeped from the wreck into the sea, contaminating 200 kilometres of the Welsh coastline, much of it part of the exceptionally beautiful and ecologically diverse Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. More than 50,000 birds were killed or injured. The devastating effects of the Sea Empress disaster weren’t confined, however, to the flora and fauna of the National Park. In the wake of the oil spill, local people found themselves experiencing a range of health problems, including headaches, nausea, and skin irritation. And yet when we look closely at these accounts, something curious emerges. The first symptoms were reported as early as the first day of the incident. But at that stage very little oil had escaped from the wrecked tanker. Whatever was causing these first headaches and feelings of nausea, it wasn’t the Sea Empress. Indeed, people living on stretches of the coast that were entirely unaffected by the spill also complained of symptoms. How do we explain physical symptoms without an obvious physical cause? In the case of the Sea Empress disaster, it’s likely that they were the direct result of anxiety. It’s an established formula. Take one catastrophe, add extensive media coverage, and watch public anxiety grow. Think back, for example, to the anthrax scares that swept the US in September and October 2001. During these weeks, letters containing anthrax spores were sent to a number of senators and media organizations. Five people died and a further seventeen were also infected. (To date, the case is still unsolved.) With anxiety in the US already ratcheted to unprecedented levels by the September 11 attacks, hundreds of people soon began reporting that they too had been the victims of anthrax poisoning, with many complaining of symptoms.

This eventually turns out to be the Thai Cottage restaurant where, until he’d been asked to leave his kitchen, chef Chalemchai Tangjariyapoon had been midway through preparing a batch of nam prik pao. ‘We only cook it once a year—it’s a spicy dip with extra hot chillies that are deliberately burned’, he said later. ‘To us it smells like burned chilli and it is slightly unusual. I can understand why people who weren’t Thai would not know what it was but it doesn’t smell like chemicals. I’m a bit confused. ...When we came back at 7.30 p.m. we saw the door had been smashed and there were fire brigade and police waiting outside. I was a bit scared but they were very nice about it.’ Should you wish to have a go at making the abovementioned Thai dip, you will need charred chillies, garlic flakes, dried shrimps, palm sugar, shrimp paste, tamarind, and vegetable oil. But then again, given Mr Tangjariyapoon’s experience, you might prefer to let the experts handle it. Provided they still dare. Because, as the staff of the Thai Cottage know only too well, right now we’re more than a little jumpy. Threats seem to loom at us from all quarters. And of course sometimes it’s right to be cautious. Lurking within the kitchen of the Thai Cottage was nothing more sinister than a superspicy savoury dip, but Londoners are well aware of the havoc terrorists can wreak. Muggers, vandals, delinquent teenagers, paedophiles, rapists, corrupt officials, malicious colleagues, gossips, spies, and blackmailers—none of these are entirely the figment of our fevered imaginations. The trick, of course, is to keep a sense of perspective, recognizing that these kinds of dangers are rare and taking that on into a calm and measured assessment of risk.

Abstract:
This conclusion surveys the history and evolution of the spy and conspiracy dramas over the preceding decades, summing up the arguments from the main chapters of the book. This is framed by discussion of some of the most recent programmes in these traditions, most notably the BBC’s return to John Le Carre with their adaptation of The Night Manager (BBC 1, 2016). It explores how these are increasingly made through complex co-production arrangements, with both the independent production sector and transatlantic co-production partners playing more dominant roles. This is linked to shift in trends back towards a ‘novelistic’ serial form, and new moral ambiguity whereby it seems increasingly difficult to distinguish the spy and conspiracy genres. It argues that this this responds to the critical agenda set American ‘quality’ television, with discourses of ‘quality’ emanating from pay-per-view threatening to supplant those associated with public service broadcasting.

Abstract:
This chapter examines Spooks (BBC 1, 2002-11), procedural spy series focused on MI5. Widely understood as British television’s primary dramatic response to the ‘war on terror’, this chapter conversely traces the series’ substantial development prior to 9/11. Spooks is characterised as epitomising trends in the deregulated era of British television, commissioned as part of an investment in cutting-edge new drama to assert BBC 1’s competitiveness in the multi-channel landscape, and developed by the independent production company Kudos Film and Television. Responding to ‘openness’ drives by the real MI5, this reworked the spy series according to the tradition of the precinct drama, situating national security activities within the familiarised culture of the workplace family. This chapter argues that, through self-consciously challenging attitudes to headline issues the series demonstrated continuity with earlier radical BBC traditions, but this was tamed by its procedural format and stylised aesthetics.

Abstract:
Paranoia/delusional disorder is unique in psychiatry in that it is virtually a newly discovered illness, yet much of the fundamental descriptive work was done a century or more ago. This long hiatus means that most practitioners have little knowledge or experience of the disorder, and the few who are aware of it usually only see a small part of the fabric. The dermatologist treats a case of delusional parasitosis, the cosmetic surgeon has an impossible patient wth a dysmorphic delusion, the lawyer does not know what to do with a totally unreasonable litigant, the police officer has to deal with a jealous murderer or an erotomanic stalker, and the personnel officer has an employee who is convinced his fellow workers are persecuting him, etc. How can we draw all this scattered material together and add it to the psychiatric literature to make a whole cloth? The answer is largely by consciousness raising and education. Kendler, an authority in this field, has said, ‘The paranoid disorders may be the third great group of functional psychoses, along with affective disorder and schizophrenia’. If he is correct, it is imperative that we hone our diagnostic and treatment skills in order to improve the help we might offer to delusional disorder sufferers and to facilitate research which is so badly needed.

Abstract:
In the United States after the September 2001 attacks, citizens were advised to protect themselves from toxic dusts by covering their windows with plastic sheeting and duct tape that could be purchased from any hardware store. One hundred years ago, terrorists would not have had ready access to today’s common chemicals to create makeshift explosives, and citizens would not have had access to plastic sheeting or duct tape to protect themselves from aerosols or gases. Chemical weapons have engendered a cloud of fear since their introduction into warfare during World War I. Recently, the large-scale use of chemicals as lethal weapons has drifted from warfare to terrorism. Chemical weapons are often equated with poison gases (either asphyxiation or nerve agents), but as can be seen in the list of movies for this chapter, they are actually the most diverse type of weapon. Some of these weapons are discussed elsewhere in the book (psychedelic agents, chapter 5; explosives, chapter 9). The chemistry in nuclear weapons movies is discussed in the commentary sections for those movies that use them. The movies in this chapter are closely linked to spy movies, which lie at the nexus of the action and thriller genres. Spy movies are appealing in part because these charming, good-looking government employees live by their wits and gut reactions to make split-second decisions that are best for the spy and the government. But a spy is only as good as the villain; otherwise, it wouldn’t be challenging or fun. So, the final ingredient for the movie choices in this chapter is that many of them refer to actual chemical weapons, which grounds them in the real world. The audience knows these weapons are dangerous and can be misused by the wrong person. Only about 70 chemical compounds have been put to use during military conflicts over the past century, and they are classified based on their effects. Asphyxiating and blistering agents were created for WWI (1914–1918); nerve agents were developed for WWII (1940–1945) but never used in that war; napalm was also created for WWII but it generated public comment only when used in the Vietnam War; nonlethal psychedelics were tested extensively during the 1950s but haven’t been documented as having been used yet; herbicides and tear gas were used tactically during the Vietnam War.

Abstract:
Estimates of the point-prevalence of paranoia and other psychotic symptoms among persons age ⋚ 65 years have ranged from approximately 4 per cent to 6 per cent, and may be as high as 10 per cent among those age ⋚ 85 years. Although the majority of these symptoms occur as secondary psychoses in the context of Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias, the population of people with schizophrenia is ageing along with the general ‘greying’ of the industrialized world, and mental health care for older adults with schizophrenia is expected to be an increasingly important public health concern. This chapter covers clinical features, classification systems, diagnosis and differential diagnosis, epidemiology, aetiology, course and prognosis, treatment, and management.

Abstract:
This transitional chapter summarizes the arguments in part 1 of the book, seeing them as renditions of debates concerning the author, the audience, and the text. Part 1 also catered to what Eve Sedgwick calls a paranoid form of reading, one reliant upon exposing the realities behind dominant discourses of empire as the primary means to create change. Part 2, in contrast, will extend these arguments by seeing games not as utilities but as objects in the world that offer erotic experiences and nourish audiences in unexpected ways. This chapter lays the groundwork for part 2, which will attempt to show how digital games, as interactive forms of storytelling and play, measure pleasures and affects, attenuate gamers to bodily perceptions, and help perceive how power takes hold of one’s conduct, body, and frailty.
