Full textFarmers around the world have adopted conservation agriculture (CA) to protect soil, improve sustainability, and increase farm revenues. Despite these known benefits, inconsistent reports on the short-term results of CA discouraged its adoption in European agrosystems. To explore this topic in this Doctoral Project, studies were performed to determine the effects of different tillage intensity–soil covering combinations during the transition from conventional agriculture to CA. The starting hypothesis purported that the combination of reduced tillage systems and cover crop tillage radish (TR) can reduce the short-term drawbacks of CA and promote soil function and fertility. To test this hypothesis, a three-year experiment in the low-lying Venetian plain (Northern Italy) was undertaken. It combined three tillage intensities (conventional tillage (CT), minimum tillage (MT), no tillage (NT)) with three winter soil coverages (bare soil (BS), TR, winter wheat cover crop (WW)). The first phase evaluated the effects of the treatment combinations on soil physical properties. Results indicated that despite decline of some measures due to reduced tillage, the strategy enhanced soil physics. Specifically, hydraulic conductivity was four time higher under NT, if compared with other treatments. In the short term, cover crop WW increased physical soil parameters moderately, whereas TR showed negligible effects. The evidence demonstrated that CA effects require several soil physical parameters to be carefully selected and monitored while considering sampling time and resolution. The second phase measured overall system sustainability by using a multivariate approach to calculate a Relative Sustainability Index (RSI) from a dataset of sustainability indicators. The manoeuvre showed that reduced tillage systems (NT, in particular) had the highest RSI values (+42% and 13% if compared to CT and MT respectively), but their yields were also especially prone to adverse biotic and meteorological conditions. Cover crop effects were limited, although WW tended to a positive RSI. A third phase of research was designed to expand the limited TR results observed in the earlier phases. A two-year plot experiment was set up to evaluate several effects: seeding date (July, August, September, October) on TR development, TR effects on soil physical parameters, and TR frost sensitivity. White mustard was used as a comparison CC to assess the relative impact of TR; white mustard is well adapted to the agrosystem of Northern Italy and known to be killed in winter. The results from this phase showed that even when cover crop effects seemed limited, September-seeded TR and white mustard reached adequate development and provided some of the expected ecosystem services. In conclusion, tillage intensity was the principal driver of results. The reduced tillage system, and NT in particular, seemed to have the potential to increase environmental and economic sustainability, even when it resulted as more susceptible to adverse conditions. Even though the size of the CC effect was limited, proper management can still provide soil benefits and ecosystem services. Careful selection of indicators seemed critical to assess CA effects correctly

The first part was focused on the soil’s evaluation of Experimental cork producing area named "Cusseddu–Miali-Parapinta”, located in Tempio Pausania (OT) in Sardinia which represent the first example of cork oak forest certificated (FSC) in the world. This aspect was carried out within the framework “NATO Science for Peace Project (ESP.MD.SFP 981674) 0073”, which involved an interdisciplinary consortium, comprising research teams from three NATO countries(Portugal, England and Italy) and two Mediterranean Dialogue countries (Morocco and Tunisia). The purpose of this first part was focused on the evaluation of soil quality as expression of the ability to interact with the ecosystem as a function of biological productivity and forest management. The second part, involved in the flowering phenology of the Quercus suber L., examining individuals of cork oak in "Quinta da Serra", Azeitão, Lisbon (Portugal), with the final aim of increasing knowledge on the variability within the species Quercus suber L. and the reproductive behavior during the flowering period, and put forward the hypothesis of a model of adaptive response to climate change.

Full textTo describe the minimum creep rate dependance on applied stress and temperature, the Norton equation or derivative relations of the power law is used, while in hot-working the Garofalo equation (sinh) is usually used. Both of these equations are phenomenological and can rarely be uniquely related to microstructural parameters. To overcome this lack, in recent years Sandtröm has developed a basic model to study the creep of fcc metals that does not include adjustable parameters and is fully predictable. This model, initially developed for pure Cu, was then applied by Spigarelli to pure Al; to adapt the model it was necessary to interpret the mechanisms that regulate creep during the power-law breakdown. The increase in creep rate at high stresses and low temperatures was related to the enanched climb rate, which derives from the increase in the vacancy concentration induced by deformation. Accordingly to what derived for pure Cu and Al, the model was further developed to take into account the solid solution strengthening, in order to describe the creep and hot deformation behavior of single-phase Al-Mg alloys. The model demonstrated an excellent accuracy and it neverthless require any adaptation of the experimental data. The model was then developed to obtain a new constitutive equation valid for alloys and composites reinforced with nanometric particles. The new model provides an excellent description of the minimum strain rate dependence of applied stress and temperature, and provides a reasonable explanation for the reduced creep rate found in these composites compared to conventional alloys. In these alloys volumetric fraction and size of the nano-particles play a key role in determining the creep response. The strengthening effect due to the interaction between particles and dislocation was described by introducing a back stress, which is in general proportional to the Orowan stress and has the nature of a true threshold stress. The model was subsequently declined to adapt it to age-hardenable alloys; changes in the volume fraction, size and distribution of reinforcing precipitates and the effect of grain size following the high temperatures exposure were taken into account. Comparison with experimental data showed the excellent correspondence of the model to the real behavior of these materials. Finally, the model was applied to AlSiMg alloys produced by additive manufacturing; these alloys have an extremely fine and complex microstructure, and are not suitable to be studied with the most widespread phenomenological models. The ultra-fine microstructure of the alloy was described using a material model (MM) consisting of soft and hard zones that deform with a similar rate. To predict the creep behavior of the MM, a set of constitutive equations was used that also take into account the growth/ripening phenomena of Si particles. The creep response of an AlSi10Mg alloy produced by LPBF and tested in the as-built condition at 150 and 225 ° C was analyzed. The minimum creep rate curves obtained from the model were then compared with the experimental data obtained by testing the real alloy at constant load in different initial states; also in this last case an excellent correlation between the model curves and the experimental results was obtained.
